Abstract:We respond to the recent comment in Optics Communications by Kayn Forbes on our recent Optics Communications article and we maintain that, contrary to what Forbes claims, substantial superchirality exists as a property of the $m\geq 1$ higher order Poincare modes. Forbes arguments are based on misconceptions and analytical errors, leading to erroneous results and unjustified criticism.

Abstract:We analyze how chirality can generate pulling optical forces and left-handed torques by cross-coupling linear-to-angular momenta between the light field and the chiral object. In the dipolar regime, we reveal that such effects can emerge from a competition between non-chiral and chiral contributions to dissipative optical forces and torques, a competition balanced by the strength of chirality of the object. We extend the analysis to large chiral spheres where the interplay between chirality and multipolar resonances can give rise to a break of symmetry that flips the signs of both optical forces and torques.

Optical intensity-gradient torque due to chiral multipole interplay

Abstract:Owing to the ubiquity and easy-to-shape property of optical intensity, the intensity gradient force of light has been most spectacularly exploited in optical manipulation of small particles. Manifesting the intensity gradient as an optical torque to spin particles is of great fascination on both fundamental and practical sides but remains elusive. Here, we uncover the existence of the optical intensity-gradient torque in the interaction of light with chiral particles. Such a new type of torque derives from the interplay between chirality induced multipoles, which switches its direction for particles with opposite chirality. We show that this torque can be directly detected by a simple standing wave field, created with the interference of two counterpropagating plane-like waves. Our work offers a unique route to achieve rotational control of matter by tailoring the field intensity of Maxwell waves. It also establishes a framework that maps a remarkable connection among the optical forces and torques, across chiral to nonchiral.

Abstract:Based on the Mie scattering theory and Maxwell stress tensor method, we investigate the transverse optical force (TOF) acting on chiral particles illuminated by a zero-order Bessel beam. It is demonstrated that the particle chirality can induce an azimuthal optical force (AOF), resulting in orbital motion of particles around the optical beam axis. The AOF depends strongly on particle loss as well as the handedness of chirality, with its amplitude capable of changing by over an order of magnitude by particle's chiral loss. The other component of TOF, the radial optical force (ROF), is much less sensitive to the magnitude and handedness of the particle chirality as well as the loss when the chirality is small. Analytical result based on dipole approximation reveals that the AOF arises from the direct coupling of particle chirality to both the spin angular momentum (SAM) and optical vorticity (curl of Poynting vector), exhibiting a conversion of optical SAM of an incident beam to mechanical orbital angular momentum of an illuminated particle. Differently, the ROF originates from the transverse gradient force. In addition, particle chirality yields a negative contribution to the gradient force; thus the ROF can be attenuated and even reversed in direction when particle chirality is sufficiently large. These characteristics of TOF might find applications in chirality detection as well as sorting chiral particles of different handedness and separating them from conventional ones.

Abstract:Structured light mechanically interacts with matter via optical forces and torques. The optical torque is traditionally calculated via the flux of total angular momentum (AM) into a volume enclosing an object. In [Phys. Rev. A 92, 043843 (2015)] a powerful method was suggested to calculate optical torque separately from the flux of the spin and the orbital parts of optical AM, providing useful physical insight. However, the method predicted a new type of dipolar torque dependent on the gradient of the helicity density of the optical beam, inconsistent with prior torque calculations. In this work we intend to clarify this discrepancy and clear up the confusion. We re-derive, from first principles and with detailed derivations, both the traditional dipolar total torque using total AM flux, and the spin and orbital torque components based on the corresponding AM contributions, ensuring that their sum agrees with the total torque. We also test our derived analytical expressions against numerical integration, with exact agreement. We find that `helicity gradient' torque terms indeed exist in the spin and orbital components separately, but we present corrected prefactors, such that upon adding them, they cancel out, and the `helicity gradient' term vanishes from the total dipolar torque, reconciling literature results. We also derive the analytical expression of the quadrupolar torque, showing that it is proportional to the spin of the EM field gradient, rather than the local EM field spin, as sometimes wrongly assumed in the literature. We provide examples of counter-intuitive situations where the spin of the EM field gradient behaves very differently to the local EM spin. Naively using the local EM field spin leads to wrong predictions of the torque on large particles with strong contributions of quadrupole and higher-order multipoles, especially in a structured incident field.
Multipolar Pseudochirality Induced Optical Torque

Abstract:It has been observed that achiral nano-particles, such as flat helices, may be subjected to an optical torque even when illuminated by normally incident linearly polarized light. However, the origin of this fascinating phenomenon has so far remained mostly unexplained. We therefore propose an exhaustive discussion that provides a clear and rigorous explanation for the existence of such a torque. Using multipolar theory, and taking into account nonlocal interactions, we find that this torque stems from multipolar pseudochiral responses that generate both spin and orbital angular momenta. We also show that the nature of these peculiar responses makes them particularly dependent on the asymmetry of the particles. By elucidating the origin of this type of torque, this work may prove instrumental for the design of high-performance nano-rotors.

Abstract:On the one hand, electromagnetic dual particles preserve the helicity of light upon interaction. On the other hand, chiral particles respond differently to light of opposite helicity. These two properties on their own constitute a source of fascination. Their combined action, however, is less explored. Here, we study on analytical grounds the force and torque as well as the optical cross sections of dual chiral particles in the dipolar approximation exerted by a particular wave of well-defined helicity: A circularly polarized plane wave. We put emphasis on particles that possess a maximally electromagnetic chiral and hence dual response. Besides the analytical insights, we also investigate the exerted optical force and torque on a real particle at the example of a metallic helix that is designed to approach the maximal electromagnetic chirality condition. Various applications in the context of optical sorting but also nanorobotics can be foreseen considering the particles studied in this contribution.

Abstract:In a recent article Babiker et al. (2024) claim that cylindrical vector beams (CVBs), also referred to as higher-order Poincaré (HOP) beams, possess optical chirality densities which exhibit 'superchirality'. Here we show that, on the contrary, CVBs possess less optical chirality density than a corresponding circularly polarized scalar vortex beam and that the 'superchiral' results are nonphysical. We also identify a number of issues concerning the derivation and general theory presented.

Chiral thermodynamics in tailored chiral optical environments

Abstract:We present an optomechanical model that describes the stochastic motion of an overdamped chiral nanoparticle diffusing in the optical bistable potential formed in the standing-wave of two counter-propagating Gaussian beams. We show how chiral optical environments can be induced in the standing-wave with no modification of the initial bistability by controlling the polarizations of each beam. Under this control, optical chiral densities and/or an optical chiral fluxes are generated, associated respectively with reactive vs. dissipative chiral optical forces exerted on the diffusing chiral nanoparticle. This optomechanical chiral coupling bias the thermodynamics of the thermal activation of the barrier crossing, in ways that depend on the nanoparticle enantiomer and on the optical field enantiomorph. We show that reactive chiral forces, being conservative, contribute to a global, enantiospecific, change of the Helmholtz free energy bistable landscape. In contrast, when the chiral nanoparticle is immersed in a dissipative chiral environment, the symmetry of the bistable potential is broken by non-conservative chiral optical forces. In this case, the chiral electromagnetic fields continuously transfer, through dissipation, mechanical energy to the chiral nanoparticle. For this chiral nonequilibrium steady-state, the thermodynamic changes of the barrier crossing take the form of heat transferred to the thermal bath and yield chiral deracemization schemes that can be explicitly calculated within the framework of our model. Three-dimensional stochastic simulations confirm and further illustrate the thermodynamic impact of chirality. Our results reveal how chiral degrees of freedom both of the nanoparticle and of the optical fields can be transformed into true thermodynamics control parameters, thereby demonstrating the significance of optomechanical chiral coupling in stochastic thermodynamics.

Abstract:The main results of the commented article do not raise objections, but their final processing seems doubtful. Namely, the spectra of zero-field plasmon with a fixed angular momentum $l = 0.1..4$ was scaled using a certain reference frequency and, then displayed as a function of a specific screening parameter. Oddly enough, it turned out that the reference frequency includes the screening parameter explicitly. Obviously, it is a trivial error in scaling procedure. For this reason the physical meaning of the result becomes lost, especially for zero value of screening parameter. The similar scaling method was performed for magnetoplasmon spectra at fixed values $0;0.5;\infty$ of screening parameter. Again, the case of zero screening parameter is doubtful. Both examples are exactly the source of misunderstandings. The original data for the axisymmetric plasmon $l=0$ were corrected and, then compared with the that followed from so-called telegraph line model, showing a difference of only 5 percent. We claim that the telegraph line model would be useful for describing disk-shaped plasmon devices with/without ring gratings.

Abstract:The optical manipulation of chiral nanoparticles in a vector Airy beam with linear polarization is theoretically investigated, and to calculate the optical forces acting on a spherical chiral particle of an arbitrary size beyond the paraxial approximation, a rigorous numerical method based on the generalized Lorenz-Mie theory and Maxwell stress tensor method is presented. It is found that the chiral nanoparticle not only can be stably trapped within the main lobe due to the transverse optical gradient force but also can be transported faster than a conventional particle without chirality along curved trajectories because of the longitudinal scattering optical force. In addition, the particle chirality significantly enhances the longitudinal optical force while slightly affecting the transverse optical force. Our results may provide an additional handle for the optical manipulation of chiral nanoparticles.
Optical effects induced in unmagnetized chiral cold plasma

Abstract:Unmagnetized cold plasma modes are investigated in the context of the chiral Maxwell-Carroll-Field-Jackiw (MCJF) electrodynamics, where the axion chiral factor acts retrieving some typical properties of magnetized plasmas. The Maxwell equations are rewritten for a cold, uniform, and collisionless fluid plasma model, allowing us to determine the dispersion relation, new refractive indices and propagating modes. We find four distinct refractive indices modified by the purely timelike CFJ background that plays the magnetic conductivity chiral parameter role, associated with right-circularly polarized [RCP] and left-circularly polarized [LCP] waves. For each refractive index, the propagation and absorption zones are determined and illustrated for some specific parameter values. Modified RCP and LCP helicons are found in the low-frequency regime. The optical behavior is investigated, revealing that the chiral factor induces birefringence, measured in terms of the rotatory power (RP). The dichroism coefficient is carried out for the absorbing zones. The negative refraction zones may enhance the involved rotatory power, yielding RP sign reversion, a feature of rotating plasmas and MCFJ chiral plasmas.

Optical vortex dichroism in chiral particles

Abstract:Circular dichroism is the differential rate of absorption of right- and left-handed circularly polarized light by chiral particles. Optical vortices which convey orbital angular momentum (OAM) possess a chirality associated with the clockwise or anti-clockwise twisting of their wavefront. Here it is highlighted that both oriented and randomly oriented chiral particles absorb photons from twisted beams at different rates depending on whether the vortex twists to the right or the left through a dipole coupling scheme. This is in contrast to previous studies that investigated dipole couplings with vortex modes in the paraxial approximation and showed no such chiral sensitivity to the vortex handedness: only in oriented media where electric quadrupole coupling contributes to optical activity effects due to absorption does such a mechanism exist for paraxial vortices. The distinct difference in the scheme highlighted in this work is that longitudinal fields are taken account of and these allow for OAM transfer even during dipole interactions. Due to the vortex dichroism persisting in randomly oriented collections of chiral particles, the mechanism has a distinct advantage in its potential applicability in chemical and biochemical applications where the systems under study are invariably in the liquid phase. Additionally, the result is put into context in terms of the quantifiable optical chirality, highlighting that optical OAM can in fact increase the optical chirality density of an electromagnetic field.

Abstract:We study optical force and torque on a general particle immersed in generic monochromatic free-space optical field. It is rigorously proved that the optical force can be written as a difference between the surface integrals of the orbital momentum density of light in the presence and in the absence of the particle, while the optical torque is described by the surface integral of total angular momentum (AM) density, viz the sum of the orbital and spin AM densities. It is therefore physically understood that only the orbital part of the optical momentum is responsible for the optical force, whereas the optical torque originates from both the orbital and the spin AM, clarifying in generic case the long-standing controversy about whether the orbital AM can induce a spinning torque.

Abstract:Artificial nanostructures enable fine control of electromagnetic fields at the nanoscale, a possibility that has recently been extended to the interaction between polarised light and chiral matter. The theoretical description of such interactions, and its application to the design of optimised structures for chiroptical spectroscopies, brings new challenges to the common set of tools used in nano-optics. In particular, chiroptical effects often depend crucially on the relative orientation of the scatterer and the incident light, but many experiments are performed with randomly-oriented scatterers, dispersed in a solution. We derive new expressions for the orientation-averaged local degree of optical chirality of the electromagnetic field in the presence of a nanoparticle aggregate. This is achieved using the superposition T -matrix framework, ideally suited for the derivation of efficient orientation-averaging formulas in light scattering problems. Our results are applied to a few model examples, and illustrate several non-intuitive aspects in the distribution of orientation-averaged degree of chirality around nanostructures. The results will be of significant interest for the study of nanoparticle assemblies designed to enhance chiroptical spectroscopies, and where the numerically-efficient computation of the averaged degree of optical chirality enables a more comprehensive exploration of the many possible nanostructures.
