Abstract:Focusing properties of Bessel-Gauss beam with radial varying polarization are investigated based on vector diffraction theory in this article. The polarization angle formed by polarization direction and radial coordinate is the function of the radial distance in pupil plane, and one polarization parameter indicates the speed of change of polarization angle. It was found that the intensity distribution in focal region can be altered considerably by the beam parameter and polarization parameter. For a small beam parameter, the focal spot broadens transversely, distorts into ring focus, and then evolves back into focal spot on increasing polarization parameter. When beam parameter gets higher, focal pattern becomes complicated and the focus evolution principle with increasing beam parameter also changes significantly. Some novel focal patterns may appear, including multiple intensity rings, dark hollow focus, cylindrical crust focus.

Abstract:We demonstrate that a sharper focal spot area can be generated (0.147 lambda(2)) by using an azimuthally polarized beam propagating through a vortex 0-2 pi phase plate than for radial polarization (0.17 lambda(2)) or for linear polarization (0.26 lambda(2)) under the same condition. Further research illustrates that such optimistic results can still be expected when condition limitations are liberalized. This will facilitate new approaches to get superresolution in confocal systems. (C) 2010 Optical Society of America

Abstract:In this paper, the synthetical analyses on the derivation of alignment in the application of the polarization optical technique are presented upon the main error sources of this technique. Consequently, a novel alignment system is developed to improve the alignment technique, which is composed of a combination of two parallel polarizers, bidirectional-double path, two detectors, and electrical signa processor. Using this system, we have realized accurate alignments between PM fibers and their in-line devices.

Abstract:It is difficult to cope with the changes in power and polarization for partially polarized light. The light polarization will also affect the image quality, especially for imaging with large numerical aperture. A novel method of analyzing the power and the polarization state of partially polarized light is proposed in this paper. This method has a good intuitiveness and requires much smaller computation. An aplanatic lens system is simulated. Polarization effect caused is analyzed with this method. The results show that for the imaging light the intensity of TM polarized light relatively increases because of large numerical aperture, which will influence image contrast. Imaging in high refractive index medium can be used to improve this problem.

Abstract:We propose a new kind of light beam with both autofocusing ability and radial-variant distribution of polarization states, named radial-variant vector circular Airy beam (RVCAB). The polarization transitions in the focus of RVCABs are simulated based on vectorial angular spectrum formalism and theoretically explained by Stokes parameters. Our results reveal the dependence of the pure polarization state near the focus on the distribution of polarization states in the initial plane, which may lead to manipulation of the polarization state near the focus via controlling the distribution of polarization states in the initial plane.

Abstract:Normally, Strehl ratio, resolution, and focus depth, the parameters that are used to evaluate the performance of an optical imaging system, are always calculated by scalar diffraction method. Considering the vectorial properties of light, especially when the system numerical aperture (NA) is high, the accuracy of scalar method can no longer fulfill the requirement of analysis. The variations of properties of these parameters accompanied by using of vectorial method are discussed. In order to describe the effects of polarization clearly, assuming a system with identical polarization state within the entrance pupil, by formula deduction and numerical simulation, we conclude that due to the influence of the polarization, the maximum intensity of system diffraction spot decreases, the resolution between image plane and parallel polarized orientation of incident light drops down, then the diffraction spot loses its circular symmetry, the focus depth changes slightly, and these effects becomes more apparent with the increase of system NA. Finally, the method of calculating the off-axis images is discussed in the paper.

Abstract:The scientific community studies tight focusing of radially and azimuthally-polarized vector beams as it is a versatile solution for many applications. We offer a new method to produce tight focusing that ensures a more uniform intensity profile in multiple dimensions, providing a more versatile and stable solution. We manipulate the polarization of the radially and azimuthally polarized vector beams to find an optimal operating point. We examine in detail optical fields whose polarization states lie on the equator of the relevant Poincaré spheres namely, the fundamental Poincaré sphere, the hybrid order Poincaré sphere (HyOPS), and the higher order Poincaré sphere. We find via simulation that the fields falling on these equators have focal plane intensity distributions characterized by a single rotation parameter determining the individual state of polarization. The strengths of the component field distributions vary with and can be tuned to achieve equal strengths of longitudinal ( z ) and transverse ( x and y ) components at the focal plane. Without control of this parameter (e.g., using in radially and in azimuthally-polarized vector beams) intensity in x and y components are at 20% of the z component. In our solution with , all components are at 80% of the maximum possible intensity of z . In examining the impact of on a tightly focused beam, we also found that a helicity inversion of HyOPS beams causes a rotation of 180 degree in the axial intensity distribution.
