Abstract:We determine the conjugacy class fusion from certain maximal subgroups of the Monster to the Monster, to justify the addition of these data to the Character Table Library in the computational algebra system GAP. The maximal subgroups in question are $(\text{PSL}_2(11) {\times} \text{PSL}_2(11)){:}4$, $11^2{:}(5 {\times} 2\text{A}_5)$, $7^2{:}\text{SL}_2(7)$, and $\text{PSL}_2(19){:}2$. Our proofs are supported by reproducible calculations carried out using the Python package mmgroup, a computational construction of the Monster recently developed by Seysen.

Abstract:Seysen's Python package mmgroup provides functionality for fast computations within the sporadic simple group $\mathbb{M}$, the Monster. The aim of this work is to present an mmgroup database of maximal subgroups of $\mathbb{M}$: for each conjugacy class $C$ of maximal subgroups in $\mathbb{M}$, we construct explicit group elements in mmgroup and prove that these elements generate a group in $C$. Our generators and the computations verifying correctness are available in accompanying code. The maximal subgroups of $\mathbb{M}$ have been classified in a number of papers spanning several decades; our work constitutes an independent verification of these constructions. We also correct the claim that $\mathbb{M}$ has a maximal subgroup $\mathrm{PSL}_2({59})$, and hence identify a new maximal subgroup $59{:}29$.

Abstract:Let $\mathbb{M}$ be the monster group which is the largest sporadic finite simple group, and has first been constructed in 1982 by Griess. In 1985, Conway has constructed a 196884-dimensional representation $\rho$ of $\mathbb{M}$ with matrix coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}[\frac{1}{2}]$. So these matrices may be reduced modulo any (not necessarily prime) odd number $p$, leading to representations of $\mathbb{M}$ in odd characteristic. The representation $\rho$ is based on representations of two maximal subgroups $G_{x0}$ and $N_0$ of $\mathbb{M}$. In ATLAS notation, $G_{x0}$ has structure $2_+^{1+24}.\mbox{Co}_1$ and $N_0$ has structure $2^{2+11+22}.( M_{24} \times S_3)$. Conway has constructed an explicit set of generators of $N_0$, but not of $G_{x0}$.

Abstract:The "monstrous proposal" of the first author is that the quotient of a certain 13-dimensional complex hyperbolic braid group, by the relations that its natural generators have order 2, is the bimonster" (M x M)semidirect Z/2. Here M is the monster simple group. We prove that this quotient is either the bimonster or Z/2. In the process, we give new information about the isomorphism found by Deligne-Mostow, between the moduli space of 12-tuples in CP1 and a quotient of the complex 9-ball. Namely, we identify which loops in the 9-ball quotient correspond to the standard braid generators.

Abstract:We give a new computer-assisted proof of the classification of maximal subgroups of the simple group ${}^2E_6(2)$ and its extensions by any subgroup of the outer automorphism group $S_3$. This is not a new result, but no earlier proof exists in the literature. A large part of the proof consists of a computational analysis of subgroups generated by an element of order 2 and an element of order 3. This method can be effectively automated, and via statistical analysis also provides a sanity check on results that may have been obtained by delicate theoretical arguments.

Abstract:We first describe, over a field K of characteristic different from 2, the orbits for the adjoint actions of the Lie groups PGL(2, K) and PSL(2, K) on their Lie algebra sl(2, K). While the former are well known, the latter lead to the resolution of generalised Pell-Fermat equations which characterise the corresponding orbit. The synthetic approach enables to change the base field, and we illustrate this picture over the fields with three and five elements, in relation with the geometry of the tetrahedral and icosahedral groups. While the results may appear familiar, they do not seem to be covered in such generality or detail by the existing literature. We apply this discussion to partition the set of PSL(2, Z)-classes of integral binary quadratic forms into groups of PSL(2, K)-classes. When K = C we obtain the class groups of a given discriminant. Then we provide a complete description of their partition into PSL(2, Q)-classes in terms of Hilbert symbols, and relate this to the partition into genera. The results are classical, but our geometrical approach is of independent interest as it may yield new insights into the geometry of Gauss composition, and unify the picture over function fields. Finally we provide a geometric interpretation in the modular orbifold PSL(2, Z) \ H for when two points or two closed geodesics correspond to PSL(2, K)-equivalent quadratic forms, in terms of hyperbolic distances and angles between those modular cycles. These geometric quantities are related to linking numbers of modular knots. Their distribution properties could be studied using the geometry of the quadratic lattice (sl(2, Z), det) but such investigations are not pursued here.

Abstract:We obtain formulae for the numbers of isomorphism and conjugacy classes of non-identity proper subgroups of the groups $G={\rm PSL}_2(p)$, $p$ prime, and for the numbers of those conjugacy classes which do or do not consist of self-normalising subgroups. The formulae are used to prove lower bounds $17$, $18$, $6$ and $12$ respectively satisfied by these invariants for all $p>37$. A computer search carried out for a different problem shows that these bounds are attained for over a million primes $p$; we show that if the Bateman--Horn Conjecture is true, they are attained for infinitely many primes. Also, assuming no unproved conjectures, we use a result of Heath-Brown to obtain upper bounds for these invariants, valid for an infinite set of primes $p$.

Duality Defect of the Monster CFT

Abstract:We show that the fermionization of the Monster CFT with respect to $\mathbb{Z}_{2A}$ is the tensor product of a free fermion and the Baby Monster CFT. The chiral fermion parity of the free fermion implies that the Monster CFT is self-dual under the $\mathbb{Z}_{2A}$ orbifold, i.e. it enjoys the Kramers-Wannier duality. The Kramers-Wannier duality defect extends the Monster group to a larger category of topological defect lines that contains an Ising subcategory. We introduce the defect McKay-Thompson series defined as the Monster partition function twisted by the duality defect, and find that the coefficients can be decomposed into the dimensions of the (projective) irreducible representations of the Baby Monster group. We further prove that the defect McKay-Thompson series is invariant under the genus-zero congruence subgroup $16D^0$ of $PSL(2,\mathbb{Z})$.

Abstract:We discuss a generalized dominance ordering for irreducible representations of the symmetric group $S_{n}$ with the aim of distinguishing the corresponding states in the 1/2-BPS sector of $U(N)$ Super Yang-Mills theory when a certain finite number of Casimir operators are known. Having knowledge of a restricted set of Casimir operators was proposed as a mechanism for information loss in this sector and its dual gravity theory in AdS$_{5}\times S^{5}$. It is well-known that the states in this sector are labeled by Young diagrams with $n$ boxes. We propose a generalization of the well-known dominance ordering of Young diagrams. Using this generalization, we posit a conjecture to determine an upper bound for the number of Casimir operators needed to distinguish between the 1/2-BPS states and thus also between their duals in the gravity theory. We offer numerical and analytic evidence for the conjecture. Lastly, we discuss implications of this conjecture when the energy $n$ of the states is asymptotically large.

Abstract:Allcock constructed a 13-dimensional complex ball quotient of which he conjectured that it admits a natural covering with covering group isomorphic to the Bimonster. This ball quotient contains the moduli space of cubic threefolds as an open dense subset of a 10-dimensional complex subball quotient. We prove that this subball quotient has a neighborhood in the Allcock ball quotient over which the conjectured cover exists.

Abstract:We present a method to compute finite index subgroups of $PSL_2(\mathbb{Z})$. Our strategy follows Kulkarni's ideas, the main contribution being a recursive method to compute bivalent trees and their automorphism group. As a concrete application, we compute all subgroups of index up to 20. We then use this database to produce tables with several arithmetical properties.

Abstract:We propose a conjecture that is a substantial generalization of the genus zero assertions in both Monstrous Moonshine and Modular Moonshine. Our conjecture essentially asserts that if we are given any homomorphism to the complex numbers from a representation ring of a group ring for a subgroup of the Monster, we obtain a Hauptmodul by applying this homomorphism to a self-dual integral form of the Moonshine module. We reduce this conjecture to the genus-zero problem for "quasi-replicable" functions, by applying Borcherds's integral form of the Goddard-Thorn no-ghost theorem together with some analysis of the Laplacian on an integral form of the Monster Lie algebra. We prove our conjecture for cyclic subgroups of the Monster generated by elements in class 4A, and we explicitly determine the multiplicities for a decomposition of the integral Moonshine Module into indecomposable modules of the integral group rings for these groups.

Abstract:We discuss some categorical aspects of the objects that appear in the construction of the Monster and other sporadic simple groups. We define the basic representation of the categorical torus $\mathcal T$ classified by an even symmetric bilinear form $I$ and of the semi-direct product of $\mathcal T$ with its canonical involution. We compute the centraliser of the basic representation of $\mathcal T\rtimes\{\pm1\}$ and find it to be a categorical extension of the extraspecial $2$-group with commutator $I\mod 2$. We study the inertia groupoid of a categorical torus and find that it is given by the torsor of the topological Looijenga line bundle, so that $2$-class functions on $\mathcal T$ are canonically theta-functions. We discuss how discontinuity of the categorical character in our formalism means that the character of the basic representation fails to be a categorical class function. We compute the automorphisms of $\mathcal T$ and of $\mathcal T\rtimes\{\pm1\}$ and relate these to the Conway groups.
