Abstract:We establish strong constraints on the kernel of the (reduced) Burau representation $\beta_4:B_4\to \text{GL}_3\left(\mathbb{Z}\left[q^{\pm 1}\right]\right)$ of the braid group $B_4$. We develop a theory to explicitly determine the entries of the Burau matrices of braids in $B_4$, and this is an important step toward demonstrating that $\beta_4$ is faithful (a longstanding question posed in the 1930s). The theory is based on a novel combinatorial interpretation of $\beta_4\left(g\right)$, in terms of the Garside normal form of $g\in B_4$ and a new product decomposition of positive braids. We develop cancellation results for words in matrix groups to show that if $\sigma$ is a generic positive braid in $B_4$ and if $t\neq 2$ is a prime number, then the leading coefficients in at least one row of the matrix $\beta_4\left(\sigma\right)$ are non-zero modulo $t$. We exploit these cancellation results to deduce that the Burau representation of $B_4$ is faithful almost everywhere.

Abstract:Let $N$ be a normal subgroup of a finite group $G$. From a result due to Brauer, it can be derived that the character table of $G$ contains square submatrices which are induced by the $G$-conjugacy classes of elements in $N$ and the $G$-orbits of irreducible characters of $N$. In the present paper, we provide an alternative approach to this fact through the structure of the group algebra. We also show that such matrices are non-singular and become a useful tool to obtain information of $N$ from the character table of $G$.

Abstract:In this article we prove that the full automorphism group of the baby-monster vertex operator superalgebra constructed by Hoehn is isomorphic to 2xB, where B is the baby-monster sporadic finite simple group and determine irreducible modules for the baby-monster vertex operator algebra. Our result has many corollaries. In particular, we can prove that the Z_2-orbifold construction with respect to a 2A-involution of the Monster applied to the moonshine vertex operator algebra yields the moonshine vertex operator algebra itself again.

Abstract:We describe the ordinary characters of trivial source modules lying in blocks with cyclic defect groups relying on their recent classification in terms of paths on the Brauer tree by G. Hiss and the second author. In particular, we show how to recover the exceptional constituents of such characters using the source algebra of the block.

Abstract:Gcharacter tables of a finite group G were defined before. These tables can be very useful to obtain certain structural information of a normal subgroup from the character table of G. We analyze certain structural properties of normal subgroups which can be determined using their Gcharacter tables. For instance, we prove an extension of the Thompsons theorem from minimal Ginvariant characters of a normal subgroup. We also obtain a variation of Taketas theorem for hypercentral normal subgroups considering their minimal G-invariant characters. This generalization allows us to introduce a new class of nilpotent groups, the class of nMIgroups, whose members verify that its nilpotency class is bounded by the number of irreducible character degrees of the group.

Abstract:In order to find a tractable theory to substitute for the wild character theory of the group of $n\times n$ unipotent upper-triangular matrices over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, Andr\'e and Yan introduced the notion of supercharacter theory. In this paper, we construct a supercharacter theory from an arbitrary set $S$ of normal subgroups of $G$. We call such supercharacter theory the normal supercharacter theory generated by $S$. It is shown that normal supercharacter theories are integral, and a recursive formula for supercharacters of the normal supercharacter theory is provided. The normal supercharacter theory provides many substitutions for wild character theories. Also, we indicate that the superclasses of the normal supercharacter theory generated by all normal subgroups of $G$ are given by certain values on the primitive central idempotents. We study the connection between the finest normal supercharacter theory and faithful irreducible characters. Moreover, an algorithm is presented to construct the supercharacter table of the finest normal supercharacter theory from the character table. Finally, We justify that normal supercharacter theories cannot be obtained by preceding supercharacter theory constructions.

Abstract:We determine the conjugacy class fusion from certain maximal subgroups of the Monster to the Monster, to justify the addition of these data to the Character Table Library in the computational algebra system GAP. The maximal subgroups in question are $(\text{PSL}_2(11) {\times} \text{PSL}_2(11)){:}4$, $11^2{:}(5 {\times} 2\text{A}_5)$, $7^2{:}\text{SL}_2(7)$, and $\text{PSL}_2(19){:}2$. Our proofs are supported by reproducible calculations carried out using the Python package mmgroup, a computational construction of the Monster recently developed by Seysen.

Abstract:We develop the concept of character level for the complex irreducible characters of finite, general or special, linear and unitary groups. We give characterizations of the level of a character in terms of its Lusztig's label and in terms of its degree. Then we prove explicit upper bounds for character values at elements with not-too-large centralizers and derive upper bounds on the covering number and mixing time of random walks corresponding to these conjugacy classes. We also characterize the level of the character in terms of certain dual pairs and prove explicit exponential character bounds for the character values, provided that the level is not too large.

Abstract:A classical theorem on character degrees states that if a finite group has fewer than four character degrees, then the group is solvable. We prove a corresponding result on character values by showing that if a finite group has fewer than eight character values in its character table, then the group is solvable. This confirms a conjecture of T. Sakurai. We also classify non-solvable groups with exactly eight character values.

Such a representation can be much more efficient in terms of memory use and even of arithmetic, than permuattion and matrix representations. Abstract:Let $\mathbb{M}$ be the monster group which is the largest sporadic finite simple group, and has first been constructed in 1982 by Griess. In 1985, Conway has constructed a 196884-dimensional representation $\rho$ of $\mathbb{M}$ with matrix coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}[\frac{1}{2}]$. So these matrices may be reduced modulo any (not necessarily prime) odd number $p$, leading to representations of $\mathbb{M}$ in odd characteristic. The representation $\rho$ is based on representations of two maximal subgroups $G_{x0}$ and $N_0$ of $\mathbb{M}$. In ATLAS notation, $G_{x0}$ has structure $2_+^{1+24}.\mbox{Co}_1$ and $N_0$ has structure $2^{2+11+22}.( M_{24} \times S_3)$. Conway has constructed an explicit set of generators of $N_0$, but not of $G_{x0}$.

Abstract:Using combinatorics and character theory, we determine the imprimitive faithful complex characters, i.e., the irreducible faithful complex characters which are induced from proper subgroups, of the Schur covers of the symmetric and alternating groups. Furthermore, for every imprimitive character we establish all its minimal block stabilizers. As a corollary, we also determine the monomial faithful characters of the Schur covers.
