Abstract:We classify all finite groups such that all irreducible character degrees appear with multiplicity at most $2$. As a consequence, we prove that the largest group with at most $2$ irreducible characters of the same degree is the Baby Monster.

Abstract:We consider problems concerning the largest degrees of irreducible characters of symmetric groups, and the multiplicities of character degrees of symmetric groups. Using evidence from computer experiments, we posit several new conjectures or extensions of previous conjectures, and prove a number of results. One of these is that, if $n\geq 21$, then there are at least eight irreducible characters of $S_n$, all of which have the same degree, and which have irreducible restriction to $A_n$. We explore similar questions about unipotent degrees of $\GL_n(q)$. We also make some remarks about how the experiments here shed light on posited algorithms for finding the largest irreducible character degree of $S_n$.

Abstract:A character of a group is said to be super-monomial if every primitive character inducing it is linear. It is conjectured by Isaacs that every irreducible character of an odd $M$-group is super-monomial. We show that all non linear irreducible characters of lowest degree of an odd $M$-group is super-monomial and provide cases in which one can guarantee that certain irreducible characters of normal subgroups are super-monomial. Finally, we study groups having two irreducible monomial character degrees.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group and $d$ the degree of a complex irreducible character of $G$, then write $|G|=d(d+e)$ where $e$ is a nonnegative integer. We prove that $|G|\leq e^4-e^3$ whenever $e>1$. This bound is best possible and improves on several earlier related results.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group, and $\pi$ be a set of primes. The $\pi$-core $\mathbf{O}_\pi(G)$ is the unique maximal normal $\pi$-subgroup of $G$, and $b(G)$ is the largest irreducible character degree of $G$. In 2017, Qian and Yang proved that if $H$ is a solvable $\pi$-subgroup of $G$, then $|H\mathbf{O}_\pi(G)/\mathbf{O}_\pi(G)|\le b(G)^3$. In this paper, we improve the exponent of $3$ to $3\log_{504}(168)<2.471$.

Let [math] be the set of all irreducible complex character degrees of [math] and denote by [math] the set of all primes which divide some character degree of [math]. The character-prime graph [math] associated to [math] is a simple undirected graph whose vertex set is [math] and there is an edge between two distinct primes [math] and [math] if and only if the product [math] divides some character degree of [math]. We show that the finite nonabelian simple groups [math], [math], [math], [math], [math] and [math] are uniquely determined by their degree-patterns and orders.

Abstract:A finite group $G$ is $normally ~monomial$ if all its irreducible characters are induced from linear characters of normal subgroups of $G$. In this paper, we determine all possible irreducible character degree sets of normally monomial 5-groups of maximal class. Moreover, we give an upper bound for the largest irreducible character degree of normally monomial $p$-groups of maximal class in terms of $p$.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group, and let $d$ be the degree of an irreducible character of $G$ such that $|G|=d(d+e)$ for some $e>1$. Consider the case when $G$ is solvable, $d$ is square-free, and $(d,d+e)=1$. We wish to explore an equivalent condition on $G$ when $d\in\text{cd}(G)$. We show that if $d\in\text{cd}(G)$ then there is a sequence of congruences relating the prime power factors of $d+e$ to the product of prime factors of $d$ such that the product of the moduli in this sequence of congruences is $d$. Moreover, the argument will hold in both directions.

Abstract:G. Navarro and P. H. Tiep, among others, have studied groups with few rational conjugacy classes or few rational irreducible characters. In this paper we look at the opposite extreme. Let $G$ be a finite group. Given a conjugacy class $K$ of $G$, we say it is irrational if there is some $\chi \in \operatorname{Irr}(G)$ such that $\chi(K) \not \in \mathbb{Q}$. One of our main results shows that, when $G$ contains at most $5$ irrational conjugacy classes, then $|\operatorname{Irr}_{\mathbb{Q}} (G)| = | \operatorname{cl}_{\mathbb{Q}} (G)|$. This suggests some duality with the known results and open questions on groups with few rational irreducible characters.

Abstract:For an irreducible complex character $\chi$ of a finite group $G$, the codegree of $\chi$ is defined by $|G:\ker(\chi)|/\chi(1)$, where $\ker(\chi)$ is the kernel of $\chi$. Abstract:A classical theorem on character degrees states that if a finite group has fewer than four character degrees, then the group is solvable. We prove a corresponding result on character values by showing that if a finite group has fewer than eight character values in its character table, then the group is solvable. This confirms a conjecture of T. Sakurai. We also classify non-solvable groups with exactly eight character values.

Abstract:If $G$ be a finite $p$-group and $\chi$ is a non-linear irreducible character of $G$, then $\chi(1)\leq |G/Z(G)|^{\frac{1}{2}}$. In \cite{fernandez2001groups}, Fernández-Alcober and Moretó obtained the relation between the character degree set of a finite $p$-group $G$ and its normal subgroups depending on whether $|G/Z(G)|$ is a square or not. In this paper we investigate the finite $p$-group $G$ where for any normal subgroup $N$ of $G$ with $G'\not \leq N$ either $N\leq Z(G)$ or $|NZ(G)/Z(G)|\leq p$ and obtain some alternate characterizations of such groups. We find that if $G$ is a finite $p$-group with $|G/Z(G)|=p^{2n+1}$ and $G$ satisfies the condition that for any normal subgroup $N$ of $G$ either $G'\not \leq N$ or $N\leq Z(G)$, then $cd(G)=\{1, p^{n}\}$. We also find that if $G$ is a finite $p$-group with nilpotency class not equal to $3$ and $|G/Z(G)|=p^{2n}$ and $G$ satisfies the condition that for any normal subgroup $N$ of $G$ either $G'\not \leq N$ or $|NZ(G)/Z(G)|\leq p$, then $cd(G) \subseteq \{1, p^{n-1}, p^{n}\}$.

Abstract:In this paper, we characterize the finite solvable groups with non-complete character degree graphs by proving the following theorem, which generalizes a conjecture by Huppert. Suppose that G is a finite solvable group and p is a prime number dividing the degree of some irreducible character of G. If there is another such prime number q such that pq does not divide the degree of any irreducible character of G, then both p-length lp(G) and q-length lq(G) of G are at most two, and lp(G)+ lq(G)=4 if and only if pq=6 with QG/Zφ(QG)≅ 32:GL(2,3), where QG is generated by all Sylow 2-subgroups of G and Zφ(G) is a normal nilpotent subgroup of G. Moreover, the bounds are best possible.

Abstract:Conjecture A of [3] predicts the equality between the smallest positive height of the irreducible characters in a p-block of a finite group and the smallest positive height of the irreducible characters in its defect group. Hence, it can be seen as a generalization of Brauer's famous height zero conjecture. One inequality was shown to be a consequence of Dade's Projective Conjecture. We prove the other, less well understood, inequality for principal blocks when the defect group has two character degrees.

Abstract:In this paper, the structure of uncountable groups with finitely many normalizers of large subgroups is studied and the connections between this property and other natural finiteness conditions on large subgroups of uncountable groups are investigated. In particular, groups in which every large subgroup is close to be normal with the only obstruction of a finite section and groups with finitely many commutator subgroups of large subgroups are considered. Moreover, groups with a finite covering consisting of groups with normal large subgroups are studied.
