Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group, $p$ a prime and $B$ a Brauer $p$-block of $G$ with defect group $D$. We prove that if the number of irreducible ordinary characters in $B$ is $5$ then $D\cong C_5, C_7, D_8$ or $Q_8$, assuming that the Alperin--McKay conjecture holds for $B$.

Abstract:In this paper, we calculate the numbers of irreducible ordinary characters and irreducible Brauer characters in a block of a finite group $G$, whose associated fusion system over a 2-subgroup $P$ of $G$ (which is a defect group of the block) has the hyperfocal subgroup $\mathbb Z_{2^n}\times \mathbb Z_{2^n}$ for some $n\geq 2$, when the block is controlled by the normalizer $N_G(P)$ and the hyperfocal subgroup is contained in the center of $P$, or when the block is not controlled by $N_G(P)$ and the hyperfocal subgroup is contained in the center of the unique essential subgroup in the fusion system. In particular, Alperin's weight conjecture holds in the considered cases.

Brauer's problem 21 for principal blocks

Abstract:Problem 21 of Brauer's list of problems from 1963 asks whether for any positive integer k there are finitely many isomorphism classes of groups that occur as the defect group of a block with k irreducible characters. We solve this problem for principal blocks. Another long-standing open problem (from 1982) in this area asks whether the defect group of a block with 3 irreducible characters is necessarily the cyclic group of order 3. In most cases we reduce this problem to a question on simple groups that is closely related to the recent solution of Brauer's height zero conjecture.

Abstract:Let $B$ be a block algebra of a group algebra $FG$ of a finite group $G$ over a field $F$ of characteristic $p>0$. This paper studies ring theoretic properties of the representation ring $T^\Delta(B,B)$ of perfect $p$-permutation $(B,B)$-bimodules and properties of the $k$-algebra $k\otimes_\mathbb{Z} T^\Delta(B,B)$, for a field $k$. We show that if the Cartan matrix of $B$ has $1$ as an elementary divisor then $[B]$ is not primitive in $T^\Delta(B,B)$. If $B$ has cyclic defect groups we determine a primitive decomposition of $[B]$ in $T^\Delta(B,B)$. Moreover, if $k$ is a field of characteristic different from $p$ and $B$ has cyclic defect groups of order $p^n$ we describe $k\otimes_\mathbb{Z} T^\Delta(B,B)$ explicitly as a direct product of a matrix algebra and $n$ group algebras.

Abstract:Let G be a finite abelian group with |G| > 1. Let a (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) be k distinct elements of G and let b (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, b (k) be (not necessarily distinct) elements of G, where k is a positive integer smaller than the least prime divisor of |G|. We show that there is a permutation pi on {1, aEuro broken vertical bar,k} such that a (1) b (pi(1)), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) b (pi(k)) are distinct, provided that any other prime divisor of |G| (if there is any) is greater than k!. This in particular confirms the Dasgupta-Karolyi-Serra-Szegedy conjecture for abelian p-groups. We also pose a new conjecture involving determinants and characters, and show that its validity implies Snevily's conjecture for abelian groups of odd order. Our methods involve exterior algebras and characters.

Abstract:For $$n\in \mathbb {N}$$ , we denote by $$\pi (n)$$ the set of prime divisors of n. For a block B of a finite group G, let $${{\,\mathrm{Irr}\,}}(B)$$ be the set of irreducible complex characters of G belonging to B. Let $$\rho (B)$$ be the set of those primes dividing the degree of some character in $${{\,\mathrm{Irr}\,}}(B)$$ , and let $$\sigma (B)$$ be the maximal number of primes dividing such a degree. For a solvable group G, we prove that $$|\rho (B)|\le 3\sigma (B)+1$$ . This provides a block result in the spirit of Huppert’s $$\rho $$ - $$\sigma $$ conjecture.

Abstract:Abstract Suppose that B is a Brauer p -block of a finite group G with a unique modular character φ. We prove that φ is liftable to an ordinary character of G (which moreover is p -rational for odd p ). This confirms the basic set conjecture for these blocks.

Abstract:We characterise the Morita equivalence classes of blocks with extraspecial defect groups $p_+^{1+2}$ for $p \geq 5$, and so show that Donovan's conjecture and the Alperin-McKay conjecture hold for such $p$-groups. For $p=3$ we reduce Donovan's conjecture for blocks with defect group $3_+^{1+2}$ to bounding the Cartan invariants for such blocks of quasisimple groups. We apply the characterisation to the case $p=5$ as an example, to list the Morita equivalence classes of such blocks.

Abstract:Let p be a prime, G a finite group, b a p -block of G with maximal Brauer pair (P,eP) , l ( b ) the number of irreducible Brauer characters in the block b , and D the hyperfocal subgroup of b with respect to (P,eP) . Set R=CP(NG(P,eP)p′) . In this paper, we show that if D is central in P , then l(b)=l(eR) where (R,eR)≤(P,eP) . Consequently, we show that if b is a 2-block and D is central in P , then l(b)=l((eP)NG(P)) .

Abstract:In this note, it is shown that a finite group G is solvable if for each odd prime divisor p of |G|, |Irr(B0(G)2)∩Irr(B0(G)p)|≤2, where Irr(B0(G)p) is the set of complex irreducible characters of the principal p-block B0(G)p of G. Also, the structure of such groups is investigated. Examples show that the bound 2 is best possible.

Abstract:Conjecture A of [3] predicts the equality between the smallest positive height of the irreducible characters in a p-block of a finite group and the smallest positive height of the irreducible characters in its defect group. Hence, it can be seen as a generalization of Brauer's famous height zero conjecture. One inequality was shown to be a consequence of Dade's Projective Conjecture. We prove the other, less well understood, inequality for principal blocks when the defect group has two character degrees.

Abstract:Slattery has generalized Brauer's theory of p-blocks of finite groups to pi-blocks of pi-separable groups where pi is a set of primes. In this setting we show that the order of a defect group of a pi-block B is bounded in terms of the number of irreducible characters in B. This is a variant of Brauer's Problem 21 and generalizes Külshammer's corresponding theorem for p-blocks of p-solvable groups. At the same time, our result generalizes Landau's classical theorem on the number of conjugacy classes of an arbitrary finite group. The proof relies on the classification of finite simple groups.

Abstract:Abstract Robinson’s conjecture states that the height of any irreducible ordinary character in a block of a finite group is bounded by the size of the central quotient of a defect group. This conjecture had been reduced to quasi-simple groups by Murai. The case of odd primes was settled completely in our predecessor paper. Abstract:For a block $B$ of a finite group we prove that $k(B)\le(\det C-1)/l(B)+l(B)\le\det C$ where $k(B)$ (respectively $l(B)$) is the number of irreducible ordinary (respectively Brauer) characters of $B$, and $C$ is the Cartan matrix of $B$. As an application, we show that Brauer's $k(B)$-Conjecture holds for every block with abelian defect group $D$ and inertial quotient $T$ provided there exists an element $u\in D$ such that $C_T(u)$ acts freely on $D/<u>$. This gives a new proof of Brauer's Conjecture for abelian defect groups of rank at most $2$. We also prove the conjecture in case $l(B)\le 3$.

Abstract:We describe the ordinary characters of trivial source modules lying in blocks with cyclic defect groups relying on their recent classification in terms of paths on the Brauer tree by G. Hiss and the second author. In particular, we show how to recover the exceptional constituents of such characters using the source algebra of the block.

Abstract:Let k ( B 0 ) and l ( B 0 ) respectively denote the number of ordinary and p -Brauer irreducible characters in the principal block B 0 of a finite group G . We prove that, if k ( B 0 )− l ( B 0 ) = 1, then l ( B 0 ) ≥ p − 1 or else p = 11 and l ( B 0 ) = 9. This follows from a more general result that for every finite group G in which all non-trivial p -elements are conjugate, l ( B 0 ) ≥ p − 1 or else p = 11 and . These results are useful in the study of principal blocks with few characters.

Abstract:Let p,q be different primes and suppose that the principal p- and the principal q-block of a finite group have only one irreducible complex character in common, namely the trivial one. We conjecture that this condition implies the existence of a nilpotent Hall {p,q}-subgroup and prove that a minimal counter-example must be an almost simple group where pq divides the order of its simple nonabelian normal subgroup. As an immediate consequence we obtain that the conjecture holds true for p-solvable or q-solvable groups. Furthermore, we prove the conjecture in case 2∈{p,q} using the classification theorem of finite simple groups. Finally, we consider the situation that the intersection of an arbitrary p-block with an arbitrary q-block contains only one irreducible character.
