Abstract:Abstract Suppose that B is a Brauer p -block of a finite group G with a unique modular character φ. We prove that φ is liftable to an ordinary character of G (which moreover is p -rational for odd p ). This confirms the basic set conjecture for these blocks.

In this paper we provide a lower bound for the number of almost p-rational characters of degree coprime to p in the principal p-block of a finite group of order divisible by p. We further describe the p-local structure of the groups for which the above-mentioned bound is sharp.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group, $p$ a prime and $B$ a Brauer $p$-block of $G$ with defect group $D$. We prove that if the number of irreducible ordinary characters in $B$ is $5$ then $D\cong C_5, C_7, D_8$ or $Q_8$, assuming that the Alperin--McKay conjecture holds for $B$.

Abstract:Let k ( B 0 ) and l ( B 0 ) respectively denote the number of ordinary and p -Brauer irreducible characters in the principal block B 0 of a finite group G . We prove that, if k ( B 0 )− l ( B 0 ) = 1, then l ( B 0 ) ≥ p − 1 or else p = 11 and l ( B 0 ) = 9. This follows from a more general result that for every finite group G in which all non-trivial p -elements are conjugate, l ( B 0 ) ≥ p − 1 or else p = 11 and . These results are useful in the study of principal blocks with few characters.

A Brauer--Galois height zero conjecture

Abstract:Recently, Malle and Navarro obtained a Galois strengthening of Brauer's height zero conjecture for principal $p$-blocks when $p=2$, considering a particular Galois automorphism of order~$2$. In this paper, for any prime $p$ we consider a certain elementary abelian $p$-subgroup of the absolute Galois group and propose a Galois version of Brauer's height zero conjecture for principal $p$-blocks. We prove it when $p=2$ and also for arbitrary $p$ when $G$ does not involve certain groups of Lie type of small rank as composition factors. Furthermore, we prove it for almost simple groups and for $p$-solvable groups.

Abstract:Let p be a prime, G a finite group, b a p -block of G with maximal Brauer pair (P,eP) , l ( b ) the number of irreducible Brauer characters in the block b , and D the hyperfocal subgroup of b with respect to (P,eP) . Set R=CP(NG(P,eP)p′) . In this paper, we show that if D is central in P , then l(b)=l(eR) where (R,eR)≤(P,eP) . Consequently, we show that if b is a 2-block and D is central in P , then l(b)=l((eP)NG(P)) .

Landau's Theorem for pi-blocks of pi-separable groups

Abstract:Slattery has generalized Brauer's theory of p-blocks of finite groups to pi-blocks of pi-separable groups where pi is a set of primes. In this setting we show that the order of a defect group of a pi-block B is bounded in terms of the number of irreducible characters in B. This is a variant of Brauer's Problem 21 and generalizes Külshammer's corresponding theorem for p-blocks of p-solvable groups. At the same time, our result generalizes Landau's classical theorem on the number of conjugacy classes of an arbitrary finite group. The proof relies on the classification of finite simple groups.

On Heights of Characters of Finite Groups

Abstract:In this paper we first state a conjecture on the lower bound of the maximal height of characters in a p-block of a finite group. Then we show that our conjecture holds for all blocks of covering groups of a sporadic simple group, for all blocks of a quasi-simple group G with G/Z(G) isomorphic to A6,A7 or a simple group of Lie type with an exceptional covering group, for all blocks of a symmetric group, as well as for all blocks of finite general linear or unitary groups. For the proof of the case with symmetric groups, it relates to an open question of Olsson on the existence of t-core partitions, where t≥3 is an integer. As a byproduct, our investigation on heights of characters of the symmetric groups and of the general linear or unitary groups also gives evidence for the Isaacs-Moretó-Navarro-Tiep Conjecture, claiming that the number of distinct irreducible character degrees of a Sylow p-subgroup P of an arbitrary finite group G is at most one more than the number of irreducible character degrees of G that are multiples of p.

Abstract:For $$n\in \mathbb {N}$$ , we denote by $$\pi (n)$$ the set of prime divisors of n. For a block B of a finite group G, let $${{\,\mathrm{Irr}\,}}(B)$$ be the set of irreducible complex characters of G belonging to B. Let $$\rho (B)$$ be the set of those primes dividing the degree of some character in $${{\,\mathrm{Irr}\,}}(B)$$ , and let $$\sigma (B)$$ be the maximal number of primes dividing such a degree. For a solvable group G, we prove that $$|\rho (B)|\le 3\sigma (B)+1$$ . This provides a block result in the spirit of Huppert’s $$\rho $$ - $$\sigma $$ conjecture.

Abstract:In this note, it is shown that a finite group G is solvable if for each odd prime divisor p of |G|, |Irr(B0(G)2)∩Irr(B0(G)p)|≤2, where Irr(B0(G)p) is the set of complex irreducible characters of the principal p-block B0(G)p of G. Also, the structure of such groups is investigated. Examples show that the bound 2 is best possible.

Abstract:In this paper, we calculate the numbers of irreducible ordinary characters and irreducible Brauer characters in a block of a finite group $G$, whose associated fusion system over a 2-subgroup $P$ of $G$ (which is a defect group of the block) has the hyperfocal subgroup $\mathbb Z_{2^n}\times \mathbb Z_{2^n}$ for some $n\geq 2$, when the block is controlled by the normalizer $N_G(P)$ and the hyperfocal subgroup is contained in the center of $P$, or when the block is not controlled by $N_G(P)$ and the hyperfocal subgroup is contained in the center of the unique essential subgroup in the fusion system. In particular, Alperin's weight conjecture holds in the considered cases.

Abstract:We investigate a natural class of blocks of finite groups: the blocks such that all of their height zero characters have the same degree. It is conceivable that these blocks, which are globally defined, are exactly the Broué-Puig (locally defined) nilpotent blocks and we offer some partial results in this direction. The most difficult result here is to prove that, with one family of possible exceptions, blocks with equal height zero degrees of simple groups have abelian defect groups and are in fact nilpotent.

Abstract:Problem 21 of Brauer's list of problems from 1963 asks whether for any positive integer k there are finitely many isomorphism classes of groups that occur as the defect group of a block with k irreducible characters. We solve this problem for principal blocks. Another long-standing open problem (from 1982) in this area asks whether the defect group of a block with 3 irreducible characters is necessarily the cyclic group of order 3. In most cases we reduce this problem to a question on simple groups that is closely related to the recent solution of Brauer's height zero conjecture.

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime number and let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field in which $p$ is split. Let $f$ be a modular form with good reduction at $p$. We study the variation of the Bloch--Kato Selmer groups and the Bloch--Kato--Shafarevich--Tate groups of $f$ over the anticyclotomic $\mathbf{Z}_p$-extension $K_\infty$ of $K$. In particular, we show that under the generalized Heegner hypothesis, if the $p$-localization of the generalized Heegner cycle attached to $f$ is primitive and certain local conditions hold, then the Pontryagin dual of the Selmer group of $f$ over $K_\infty$ is free over the Iwasawa algebra. Consequently, the Bloch--Kato--Shafarevich--Tate groups of $f$ vanish. This generalizes earlier works of Matar and Matar--Nekovář on elliptic curves. Furthermore, our proof applies uniformly to the ordinary and non-ordinary settings.

The ring of perfect $p$-permutation bimodules for blocks with cyclic defect groups

Abstract:Let $B$ be a block algebra of a group algebra $FG$ of a finite group $G$ over a field $F$ of characteristic $p>0$. This paper studies ring theoretic properties of the representation ring $T^\Delta(B,B)$ of perfect $p$-permutation $(B,B)$-bimodules and properties of the $k$-algebra $k\otimes_\mathbb{Z} T^\Delta(B,B)$, for a field $k$. We show that if the Cartan matrix of $B$ has $1$ as an elementary divisor then $[B]$ is not primitive in $T^\Delta(B,B)$. If $B$ has cyclic defect groups we determine a primitive decomposition of $[B]$ in $T^\Delta(B,B)$. Moreover, if $k$ is a field of characteristic different from $p$ and $B$ has cyclic defect groups of order $p^n$ we describe $k\otimes_\mathbb{Z} T^\Delta(B,B)$ explicitly as a direct product of a matrix algebra and $n$ group algebras.

Abstract:This paper introduces the notion of Brauer-friendly modules, a generalisation of endo-p-permutation modules. A module over a block algebra OGe is said to be Brauer-friendly if it is a direct sum of indecomposable modules with compatible fusion-stable endopermutation sources. We obtain, for these modules, a functorial version of Dade's slash construction, also known as deflation-restriction. We prove that our slash functors, defined over Brauer-friendly categories, share most of the very useful properties that are satisfied by the Brauer functor over the category of p-permutation OGe-modules. In particular, we give a parametrisation of indecomposable Brauer-friendly modules, which opens the way to a complete classification whenever the fusion-stable sources are classified. Those tools have been used to prove the existence of a stable equivalence between non-principal blocks in the context of a minimal counter-example to the odd Z*p-theorem.
