Abstract:Knörr has constructed an ideal, in the center of the p -modular group algebra of a finite group G , whose dimension is the number of p -blocks of defect zero in G / Q ; here p is a prime and Q is a normal p -subgroup of G . We generalize his construction to symmetric algebras.

Abstract:We prove that the Krull-Schmidt decomposition of the Galois module of the $p$-adic completion of algebraic units is controlled by the primes that are ramified in the Galois extension and the $S$-ideal class group. We also compute explicit upper bounds for the number of possible Galois module structures of algebraic units when the Galois group is cyclic of order $p^{2}$ or $p^{3}$.

Abstract:We give an explicit algebraic description, based on prismatic cohomology, of the algebraic K-groups of rings of the form $O_K/I$ where $K$ is a p-adic field and $I$ is a non-trivial ideal in the ring of integers $O_K$; this class includes the rings $\mathbf{Z}/p^n$ where $p$ is a prime.

Abstract:We show that any central simple algebra of exponent p in prime characteristic p that is split by a p -extension of degree pn is Brauer equivalent to a tensor product of 2⋅pn−1−1 cyclic algebras of degree p . If p=2 and n⩾3 , we improve this result by showing that such an algebra is Brauer equivalent to a tensor product of 5⋅2n−3−1 quaternion algebras. Furthermore, we provide new proofs for some bounds on the minumum number of cyclic algebras of degree p that is needed to represent Brauer classes of central simple algebras of exponent p in prime characteristic p , which have previously been obtained by different methods.

Unobstructedness and dimension of families of Gorenstein algebras

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to develop tools to study maximal families of Gorenstein quotients A of a polynomial ring R. We prove a very general Theorem on deformations of the homogeneous coordinate ring of a scheme Proj(A) which is defined as the degeneracy locus of a regular section of the dual of some sheaf M^~ of rank r supported on say an arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay subscheme Proj(B) of Proj(R). Under certain conditions (notably; M maximally Cohen-Macaulay and the top exterior power of M^~ a twist of the canonical sheaf), then A is Gorenstein, and under additional assumptions, we show the unobstructedness of A and we give an explicit formula the dimension of any maximal family of Gorenstein quotients of R with fixed Hilbert function obtained by a regular section as above. The theorem also applies to Artinian quotients A. The case where M itself is a twist of the canonical module (r=1) was studied in a previous paper, while this paper concentrates on other low rank cases, notably r=2 and 3. In these cases regular sections of the first Koszul homology module and of normal sheaves to licci schemes (of say codimension 2) lead to Gorenstein quotients (of e.g. codimension 4) whose parameter spaces we examine. Our main applications are for Gorenstein quotients of codimension 4 of R since our assumptions are almost always satisfied in this case. Special attention are paid to arithmetically Gorenstein curves in P^5.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the block that has an abelian defect group of rank $2$ and its Brauer correspondent has only one simple module. We will get an isotypy between the block and its Brauer correspondent. It will generalize the result of Kessar and Linckelmann (\cite{KL}).

Abstract:We prove an analogue of Scholze's Primitive Comparison Theorem for proper rigid spaces over an algebraically closed non-archimedean field K of characteristic p . This implies a v-topological version of the Primitive Comparison Theorem for proper finite type morphisms of analytic adic spaces over . We deduce new cases of the Proper Base Change Theorem for p -torsion coefficients and the Künneth formula in this setting.

Abstract:Let p be a prime number which is split in an imaginary quadratic field k. Let \mathfrak{p} be a place of k above p. Let k_\infty be the unique Z_p-extension of k which unramified outside of \mathfrak{p}, and let K_\intfy be a finite extension of k_\infty, abelian over k. In case p \notin {2,3}, we prove that the characteristic ideal of the projective limit of global units modulo elliptic units coincides with the characteristic ideal of the projective limit of the p-class groups. Our approach uses Euler systems, which were first used in this context by <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://K.Rubin" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>. If p \in {2,3}, we obtain a divisibility relation, up to a certain constant.

On $p$-groups with a maximal elementary abelian normal subgroup of rank $k$

Abstract:There are several results in the literature concerning $p$-groups $G$ with a maximal elementary abelian normal subgroup of rank $k$ due to Thompson, Mann and others. Following an idea of Sambale we obtain bounds for the number of generators etc. of a $2$-group $G$ in terms of $k$, which were previously known only for $p>2$. We also prove a theorem that is new even for odd primes. Namely, we show that if $G$ has a maximal elementary abelian normal subgroup of rank $k$, then for any abelian subgroup $A$ the Frattini subgroup $\Phi(A)$ can be generated by $2k$ elements ($3k$ when $p=2$). The proof of this rests upon the following result of independent interest: If $V$ is an $n$-dimensional vector space, then any commutative subalgebra of End$(V)$ contains a zero algebra of codimension at most $n$.

Abstract:Using Fourier-Mukai transformations, we prove some results about the ring of unipotent vector bundles on elliptic curves in positive characteristics. This ring was determined by Atiyah in characteristic zero, who showed that it is a polynomial ring in one variable. It turns out that the situation in characteristic p>0 is completely different and rather bizarre: the ring is nonnoetherian and contains a subring whose spectrum contains infinitely many copies of Spec(Z), which are glued with successively higher and higher infinitesimal identification at the point corresponding to the prime p.

On Bosch-Lütkebohmert-Raynaud's Conjecture I

Abstract:Let $G$ be a smooth algebraic group over the field of rational functions of an excellent Dedekind scheme $S$ of equal characteristic $p>0.$ A Néron lft-model of $G$ is a smooth separated model $\mathscr{G} \to S$ of $G$ satisfying a universal property. Predicting whether a given $G$ admits such a model is a very delicate (and, in general, open) question if $S$ has infinitely many closed points, which is the subject of Conjecture I due to Bosch-Lütkebohmert-Raynaud. This conjecture was recently proven by T. Suzuki and the author if the residue fields of $S$ at closed points are perfect, but refuted in general. The aim of the present paper is two-fold: firstly, we give a new construction of counterexamples which is more general and provides a conceptual explanation for the only counterexamples known previously, as well as providing many new counterexamples. Secondly, we shall give a new and elementary proof of Conjecture I in the case of perfect residue fields. Both parts make use of the concept of weakly permawound unipotent groups recently introduced by Rosengarten.

Abstract:Let $k = \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt {-m})$ and $p > 2$ split in $k$. We prove new properties of the $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions $K/k$, distinct from the cyclotomic; we do not assume $K/k$ totally ramified, nor the triviality of the $p$-class group of $k$. These properties are governed by the $p$-valuation, $\delta_p(k)$, of a suitable Fermat quotient of the fundamental $p$-unit $x$ of $k$, which also yields the order of the logarithmic class group (2.2, App. A), and generalize the Gold-Sands criterion (5.1, 5.3, 5.4, 5.5). These results use the second element $(\mathcal{H}_{K_n}/\mathcal{H}_{K_n}^{G_n})^{G_n}$ of the filtration of the $p$-class groups in $K=\cup_n K_n$, without any argument of Iwasawa's theory, and provide new perspectives. We compute, Sec. 7, the first layer $K_1$, using the Log-function, then give a short proof of a result of Kundu-Washington (5.6), and show (7.4, 7.6) that capitulation is possible in $K$, suggesting Conjecture 5.8. Calculations are gathered App. B.

Abstract:Let $B$ be a block algebra of a group algebra $FG$ of a finite group $G$ over a field $F$ of characteristic $p>0$. This paper studies ring theoretic properties of the representation ring $T^\Delta(B,B)$ of perfect $p$-permutation $(B,B)$-bimodules and properties of the $k$-algebra $k\otimes_\mathbb{Z} T^\Delta(B,B)$, for a field $k$. We show that if the Cartan matrix of $B$ has $1$ as an elementary divisor then $[B]$ is not primitive in $T^\Delta(B,B)$. If $B$ has cyclic defect groups we determine a primitive decomposition of $[B]$ in $T^\Delta(B,B)$. Moreover, if $k$ is a field of characteristic different from $p$ and $B$ has cyclic defect groups of order $p^n$ we describe $k\otimes_\mathbb{Z} T^\Delta(B,B)$ explicitly as a direct product of a matrix algebra and $n$ group algebras.

On p-torsions of geometric Brauer groups

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth projective integral variety over a finitely generated field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$. We show that the finiteness of the exponent of the $p$-primary part of $\mathrm{Br}(X_{k^s})^{G_k}$ is equivalent to the Tate conjecture for divisors, generalizing D'Addezio's theorem for abelian varieties to arbitrary smooth projective varieties. In combination with the Leray spectral sequence for rigid cohomology derived from the Berthelot conjecture recently proved by Ertl-Vezzani, we show that the cokernel of $\mathrm{Br}_{\mathrm{nr}}(K(X)) \rightarrow \mathrm{Br}(X_{k^s})^{G_k}$ is of finite exponent. This completes the $p$-primary part of the generalization of Artin-Grothendieck's theorem on relations between Brauer groups and Tate-Shafarevich groups to higher relative dimensions.

On the structure of the Bloch--Kato Selmer groups of modular forms over anticyclotomic $\mathbf{Z}_p$-towers

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime number and let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field in which $p$ is split. Let $f$ be a modular form with good reduction at $p$. We study the variation of the Bloch--Kato Selmer groups and the Bloch--Kato--Shafarevich--Tate groups of $f$ over the anticyclotomic $\mathbf{Z}_p$-extension $K_\infty$ of $K$. In particular, we show that under the generalized Heegner hypothesis, if the $p$-localization of the generalized Heegner cycle attached to $f$ is primitive and certain local conditions hold, then the Pontryagin dual of the Selmer group of $f$ over $K_\infty$ is free over the Iwasawa algebra. Consequently, the Bloch--Kato--Shafarevich--Tate groups of $f$ vanish. This generalizes earlier works of Matar and Matar--Nekovář on elliptic curves. Furthermore, our proof applies uniformly to the ordinary and non-ordinary settings.

Boundedness of the p-primary torsion of the Brauer group of products of varieties

Abstract:Let k be a field finitely generated over its prime subfield. We prove that the quotient of the Brauer group of a product of varieties over k by the Brauer groups of factors has finite exponent. The bulk of the proof concerns p-primary torsion in characteristic p. Our approach gives a more direct proof of the boundedness of the p-primary torsion of the Brauer group of an abelian variety, as recently proved by D'Addezio. We show that the transcendental Brauer group of a Kummer surface over k has finite exponent, but can be infinite when k is an infinite field of positive characteristic. This answers a question of Zarhin and the author.

In this paper we provide a lower bound for the number of almost p-rational characters of degree coprime to p in the principal p-block of a finite group of order divisible by p. We further describe the p-local structure of the groups for which the above-mentioned bound is sharp.

Defect in cyclotomic Hecke algebras

Abstract:The complexity of a block of a symmetric algebra can be measured by the notion of defect, a numerical datum associated with each of the simple modules contained in the block. Geck showed that the defect is a block invariant for Iwahori-Hecke algebras of finite Coxeter groups in the equal parameter case, and speculated that a similar result should hold in the unequal parameter case. We prove that the defect is a block invariant for all cyclotomic Hecke algebras associated with the complex reflection groups of the infinite series $G(l,p,n)$, which include the Weyl groups of type $B_n$ in the unequal parameter case. In particular, for the groups $G(l,1,n)$, we show that the defect corresponds to the notion of weight in the sense of Fayers. We thus also obtain a new way of computing the weight, which uses a generalisation of the notion of hook lengths. We further show computationally that the defect is a block invariant for all cyclotomic Hecke algebras of exceptional type for which the blocks are known, and we conjecture that the result should hold for all complex reflection groups. Finally, we obtain that the defect is also a block invariant for cyclotomic Yokonuma-Hecke algebras.

Abstract:Problem 21 of Brauer's list of problems from 1963 asks whether for any positive integer k there are finitely many isomorphism classes of groups that occur as the defect group of a block with k irreducible characters. We solve this problem for principal blocks. Another long-standing open problem (from 1982) in this area asks whether the defect group of a block with 3 irreducible characters is necessarily the cyclic group of order 3. In most cases we reduce this problem to a question on simple groups that is closely related to the recent solution of Brauer's height zero conjecture.
