Abstract:In this note, it is shown that a finite group G is solvable if for each odd prime divisor p of |G|, |Irr(B0(G)2)∩Irr(B0(G)p)|≤2, where Irr(B0(G)p) is the set of complex irreducible characters of the principal p-block B0(G)p of G. Also, the structure of such groups is investigated. Examples show that the bound 2 is best possible.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group, $p$ a prime and $B$ a Brauer $p$-block of $G$ with defect group $D$. We prove that if the number of irreducible ordinary characters in $B$ is $5$ then $D\cong C_5, C_7, D_8$ or $Q_8$, assuming that the Alperin--McKay conjecture holds for $B$.

Abstract:We characterize when a finite group G possesses a Sylow 3-subgroup P with abelianization of order 9 in terms of the number of height zero characters lying in the principal 3-block of G, settling a conjecture put forward by Navarro, Sambale, and Tiep in 2018. Along the way, we show that a recent result by Laradji on the number of character of height zero in a block that lie above a given character of some normal subgroup holds, without any hypothesis on the group for blocks of maximal defect.

Abstract:Let p,q be different primes and suppose that the principal p- and the principal q-block of a finite group have only one irreducible complex character in common, namely the trivial one. We conjecture that this condition implies the existence of a nilpotent Hall {p,q}-subgroup and prove that a minimal counter-example must be an almost simple group where pq divides the order of its simple nonabelian normal subgroup. As an immediate consequence we obtain that the conjecture holds true for p-solvable or q-solvable groups. Furthermore, we prove the conjecture in case 2∈{p,q} using the classification theorem of finite simple groups. Finally, we consider the situation that the intersection of an arbitrary p-block with an arbitrary q-block contains only one irreducible character.
Principal 2-blocks with wreathed defect groups up to splendid Morita equivalence

Abstract:We classify principal $2$-blocks of finite groups $G$ with Sylow $2$-subgroups isomorphic to a wreathed $2$-group $C_{2^n}\wr C_2$ with $n\geq 2$ up to Morita equivalence and up to splendid Morita equivalence. As a consequence, we obtain that Puig's Finiteness Conjecture holds for such blocks. Furthermore, we obtain a classification of such groups modulo $O_{2'}(G)$, which is a pure group theoretical result and of independent interest. Methods previously applied to blocks of tame representation type are used. They are, however, further developed in order to deal with blocks of wild representation type.

Abstract:Problem 21 of Brauer's list of problems from 1963 asks whether for any positive integer k there are finitely many isomorphism classes of groups that occur as the defect group of a block with k irreducible characters. We solve this problem for principal blocks. Another long-standing open problem (from 1982) in this area asks whether the defect group of a block with 3 irreducible characters is necessarily the cyclic group of order 3. In most cases we reduce this problem to a question on simple groups that is closely related to the recent solution of Brauer's height zero conjecture.

Abstract:Let p be a prime. In this paper we provide a lower bound for the number of almost p-rational characters of degree coprime to p in the principal p-block of a finite group of order divisible by p. We further describe the p-local structure of the groups for which the above-mentioned bound is sharp.

Abstract:Let $p$ and $q$ be different primes and let $G$ be a finite $q$-solvable group. We prove that $\mathrm{Irr}_{p'}(G)\subseteq \mathrm{Irr}_{q'}(G)$ if and only if $\mathbf{N}_G(P)\subseteq \mathbf{N}_G(Q)$ and $\mathbf{C}_{Q'}(P)=1$ for some $P\in\mathrm{Syl}_p(G)$ and $Q\in\mathrm{Syl}_q(G)$. Further, if $B$ is a $q$-block of $G$ and $p$ does not divide the degree of any character in $\mathrm{Irr}(B)$ then we prove that a Sylow $p$-subgroup of $G$ is normalized by a defect group of $B$. This removes the $p$-solvability condition of two theorems of G. Navarro and T. R. Wolf.

Abstract:Let k ( B 0 ) and l ( B 0 ) respectively denote the number of ordinary and p -Brauer irreducible characters in the principal block B 0 of a finite group G . We prove that, if k ( B 0 )− l ( B 0 ) = 1, then l ( B 0 ) ≥ p − 1 or else p = 11 and l ( B 0 ) = 9. This follows from a more general result that for every finite group G in which all non-trivial p -elements are conjugate, l ( B 0 ) ≥ p − 1 or else p = 11 and . These results are useful in the study of principal blocks with few characters.

On almost $p$-rational characters of $p'$-degree

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime and $G$ a finite group. A complex character of $G$ is called almost $p$-rational if its values belong to a cyclotomic field $\mathbb{Q}(e^{2\pi i/n})$ for some $n\in \mathbb{Z}^+$ prime to $p$ or precisely divisible by $p$. We prove that, in contrast to usual $p$-rational characters, there are always "many" almost $p$-rational irreducible characters in finite groups. We obtain both explicit and asymptotic bounds for the number of almost $p$-rational irreducible characters of $G$ in terms of $p$. In fact, motivated by the McKay-Navarro conjecture, we obtain the same bound for the number of such characters of $p'$-degree and prove that, in the minimal situation, the number of almost $p$-rational irreducible $p'$-characters of $G$ coincides with that of $N_G(P)$ for $P\in\mathrm{Syl}_p(G)$. Lastly, we propose a new way to detect the cyclicity of Sylow $p$-subgroups of a finite group $G$ from its character table, using almost $p$-rational irreducible $p'$-characters and the blockwise refinement of the McKay-Navarro conjecture.

Abstract:In this paper, we calculate the numbers of irreducible ordinary characters and irreducible Brauer characters in a block of a finite group $G$, whose associated fusion system over a 2-subgroup $P$ of $G$ (which is a defect group of the block) has the hyperfocal subgroup $\mathbb Z_{2^n}\times \mathbb Z_{2^n}$ for some $n\geq 2$, when the block is controlled by the normalizer $N_G(P)$ and the hyperfocal subgroup is contained in the center of $P$, or when the block is not controlled by $N_G(P)$ and the hyperfocal subgroup is contained in the center of the unique essential subgroup in the fusion system. In particular, Alperin's weight conjecture holds in the considered cases.

On Heights of Characters of Finite Groups

Abstract:In this paper we first state a conjecture on the lower bound of the maximal height of characters in a p-block of a finite group. Then we show that our conjecture holds for all blocks of covering groups of a sporadic simple group, for all blocks of a quasi-simple group G with G/Z(G) isomorphic to A6,A7 or a simple group of Lie type with an exceptional covering group, for all blocks of a symmetric group, as well as for all blocks of finite general linear or unitary groups. For the proof of the case with symmetric groups, it relates to an open question of Olsson on the existence of t-core partitions, where t≥3 is an integer. As a byproduct, our investigation on heights of characters of the symmetric groups and of the general linear or unitary groups also gives evidence for the Isaacs-Moretó-Navarro-Tiep Conjecture, claiming that the number of distinct irreducible character degrees of a Sylow p-subgroup P of an arbitrary finite group G is at most one more than the number of irreducible character degrees of G that are multiples of p.

Abstract:For $$n\in \mathbb {N}$$ , we denote by $$\pi (n)$$ the set of prime divisors of n. For a block B of a finite group G, let $${{\,\mathrm{Irr}\,}}(B)$$ be the set of irreducible complex characters of G belonging to B. Let $$\rho (B)$$ be the set of those primes dividing the degree of some character in $${{\,\mathrm{Irr}\,}}(B)$$ , and let $$\sigma (B)$$ be the maximal number of primes dividing such a degree. For a solvable group G, we prove that $$|\rho (B)|\le 3\sigma (B)+1$$ . This provides a block result in the spirit of Huppert’s $$\rho $$ - $$\sigma $$ conjecture.

Abstract:We prove that a finite group $G$ has a normal Sylow $p$-subgroup $P$ if, and only if, every irreducible character of $G$ appearing in the permutation character $({\bf 1}_P)^G$ with multiplicity coprime to $p$ has degree coprime to $p$. This confirms a prediction by Malle and Navarro from 2012. Our proof of the above result depends on a reduction to simple groups and ultimately on a combinatorial analysis of the properties of Sylow branching coefficients for symmetric groups.

Abstract:We investigate the separation of irreducible characters by blocks at different primes and the covering of irreducible characters by blocks (viewed as sets of characters); these notions are used to prove results on the group structure. The covering of all characters of a group by principal blocks is only possible when already one principal block suffices or the generalized Fitting subgroup has a very special structure.

Abstract:We first determine in this paper the structure of the generalized Fitting subgroup F * ( G ) of the finite groups G all of whose defect groups (of blocks) are conjugate under the automorphism group Aut( G ) to either a Sylow p -subgroup or a fixed p -subgroup of G . Then we prove that if a finite group L acts transitively on the set of its proper Sylow p -intersections, then either L/O p ( L ) has a T.I. Sylow p -subgroup or p = 2 and the normal closure of a Sylow 2-subgroup of L/O 2 ( L ) is 2-nilpotent with completely descripted structure. This solves a long-open problem. We also obtain some generalizations of the classic results by Isaacs and Passman on half-transitivity.
