Abstract:We characterize when a finite group G possesses a Sylow 3-subgroup P with abelianization of order 9 in terms of the number of height zero characters lying in the principal 3-block of G, settling a conjecture put forward by Navarro, Sambale, and Tiep in 2018. Along the way, we show that a recent result by Laradji on the number of character of height zero in a block that lie above a given character of some normal subgroup holds, without any hypothesis on the group for blocks of maximal defect.

Abstract:The weights for a finite group G with respect to a prime number p were introduced by Jon Alperin, in order to formulate his celebrated conjecture. In 1992, Everett Dade formulated a refinement of Alperin's conjecture involving ordinary irreducible characters — with their defect — and, in 2000, Geoffrey Robinson proved that the new conjecture holds for p-solvable groups. But this refinement is formulated in terms of a vanishing alternating sum, without giving any possible refinement for the weights. In this note we show that, in the case of the p-solvable finite groups, the method developed in a previous paper can be suitably refined to provide, up to the choice of a polarization ω, a natural bijection — namely compatible with the action of the group of outer automorphisms of G — between the sets of absolutely irreducible characters of G and of G-conjugacy classes of suitable inductive weights, preserving blocks and defects.

On almost $p$-rational characters of $p'$-degree

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime and $G$ a finite group. A complex character of $G$ is called almost $p$-rational if its values belong to a cyclotomic field $\mathbb{Q}(e^{2\pi i/n})$ for some $n\in \mathbb{Z}^+$ prime to $p$ or precisely divisible by $p$. We prove that, in contrast to usual $p$-rational characters, there are always "many" almost $p$-rational irreducible characters in finite groups. We obtain both explicit and asymptotic bounds for the number of almost $p$-rational irreducible characters of $G$ in terms of $p$. In fact, motivated by the McKay-Navarro conjecture, we obtain the same bound for the number of such characters of $p'$-degree and prove that, in the minimal situation, the number of almost $p$-rational irreducible $p'$-characters of $G$ coincides with that of $N_G(P)$ for $P\in\mathrm{Syl}_p(G)$. Lastly, we propose a new way to detect the cyclicity of Sylow $p$-subgroups of a finite group $G$ from its character table, using almost $p$-rational irreducible $p'$-characters and the blockwise refinement of the McKay-Navarro conjecture.

Abstract:For any finite group $G$ and any prime $p$ one can ask which ordinary irreducible representations remain irreducible in characteristic $p$, or more generally, which representations remain homogeneous in characteristic $p$. In this paper we address this question for $p=3$ when $G$ is a proper double cover of the symmetric or alternating group. We obtain a classification except in the case of a certain family of partitions relating to spin RoCK blocks. Our techniques involve induction and restriction, degree calculations, decomposing projective characters and recent results of Kleshchev and Livesey on spin RoCK blocks.

Abstract:Let $p\ge 5$ be a prime and let $P$ be a Sylow $p$-subgroup of a finite symmetric group. To every irreducible character of $P$ we associate a collection of labelled, complete $p$-ary trees. The main results of this article describe Sylow branching coefficients for symmetric groups for all irreducible characters of $P$ in terms of some combinatorial properties of these trees, extending previous work on the linear characters of $P$.

Abstract:We prove that a finite group $G$ has a normal Sylow $p$-subgroup $P$ if, and only if, every irreducible character of $G$ appearing in the permutation character $({\bf 1}_P)^G$ with multiplicity coprime to $p$ has degree coprime to $p$. This confirms a prediction by Malle and Navarro from 2012. Our proof of the above result depends on a reduction to simple groups and ultimately on a combinatorial analysis of the properties of Sylow branching coefficients for symmetric groups.

Abstract:Let $p$ and $q$ be different primes and let $G$ be a finite $q$-solvable group. We prove that $\mathrm{Irr}_{p'}(G)\subseteq \mathrm{Irr}_{q'}(G)$ if and only if $\mathbf{N}_G(P)\subseteq \mathbf{N}_G(Q)$ and $\mathbf{C}_{Q'}(P)=1$ for some $P\in\mathrm{Syl}_p(G)$ and $Q\in\mathrm{Syl}_q(G)$. Further, if $B$ is a $q$-block of $G$ and $p$ does not divide the degree of any character in $\mathrm{Irr}(B)$ then we prove that a Sylow $p$-subgroup of $G$ is normalized by a defect group of $B$. This removes the $p$-solvability condition of two theorems of G. Navarro and T. R. Wolf.

Abstract:Let $(G,\{\rho_0, \rho_1, \rho_2\})$ be a string C-group of order $4p^m$ with type $\{k_1, k_2\}$ for $m \geq 2$, $k_1, k_2\geq 3$ and $p$ be an odd prime. Let $P$ be a Sylow $p$-subgroup of $G$. We prove that $G \cong P \rtimes (\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2)$, $d(P)=2$, and up to duality, $p \mid k_1, 2p \mid k_2$. Moreover, we show that if $P$ is abelian, then $(G,\{\rho_0, \rho_1, \rho_2\})$ is tight and hence known. In the case where $P$ is nonabelian, we construct an infinite family of string C-group with type $\{p, 2p\}$ of order $4p^m$ where $m \geq 3$.

We prove that whenever $q\geq 8$, all non-trivial irreducible character $\chi$ of $\mathrm{PSL}_2(q)$ satisfies $c(\chi^4)=\mathrm{Irr}\left(\mathrm{PSL}_2(q)\right)$ if $q=2^{2m+1}$ and $c(\chi^3)=\mathrm{Irr}\left(\mathrm{PSL}_2(q)\right)$ otherwise.

Sharp character bounds for symmetric groups in terms of partition length

Abstract:Let $S_n$ denote a symmetric group, $\chi$ an irreducible character of $S_n$, and $g\in S_n$ an element which decomposes into $k$ disjoint cycles, where $1$-cycles are included. Then $|\chi(g)|\le k!$, and this upper bound is sharp for fixed $k$ and varying $n$, $\chi$, and $g$. This implies a sharp upper bound of $k!$ for unipotent character values of $SL_n(q)$ at regular semisimple elements with characteristic polynomial $P(t)=P_1(t)\cdots P_k(t)$, where the $P_i$ are irreducible over $F_q[t]$.

Let $\chi \in {\rm Irr}(G)$, we write ${\rm cod}(\chi)=|G:{\rm ker} \chi|/\chi(1)$, and called it the codegree of the irreducible character $\chi$. Let $N\unlhd G$, write ${\rm Irr}(G|N)=\{\chi \in {\rm Irr}(G)~|~N\nsubseteq {\rm ker}\chi\}$, and ${\rm cod}(G|N)=\{ {\rm cod}(\chi) ~|~\chi\in{\rm Irr}(G|N)\}.$ In this Ipaper, we prove that if $N\unlhd G$ and every member of ${\rm cod}(G|N')$ is not divisible by some fixed prime $p\in \pi(G)$, then $N$ has a normal $p$-complement and $N$ is solvable.

Abstract:We compute the irreducible constitutents of the product of the Weil character and the Steinberg character in those finite classical groups for which a Weil character is defined, namely the symplectic, unitary and general linear groups. It turns out that this product is multiplicity free for the symplectic and general unitary groups, but not for the general linear groups. As an application we show that the restriction of the Steinberg character of such a group to the subgroup stabilizing a vector in the natural module is multiplicity free. The proof of this result for the unitary groups uses an observation of Brunat, published as an appendix to our paper. As our "Weil character" for the symplectic groups in even characteristic we use the 2-modular Brauer character of the generalized spinor representation. Its product with the Steinberg character is the Brauer character of a projective module. We also determine its indecomposable direct summands.

Abstract:A Sylow p-subgroup P of a finite group G is called redundant if every p-element of G lies in a Sylow subgroup different from P. Generalizing a recent theorem of Maróti--Martínez--Moretó, we show that for every non-cyclic p-group P there exists a solvable group G such that P is redundant in G. Moreover, we answer several open questions raised by Maróti--Martínez--Moretó.
