Abstract:For a finite group $G$, we denote by $c(G)$, the minimal degree of faithful representation of $G$ by quasi-permutation matrices over the complex field $\mathbb{C}$. For an irreducible character $\chi$ of $G$, the codegree of $\chi$ is defined as $\cod(\chi) = |G/ \ker(\chi)|/ \chi(1)$. In this article, we establish equality between $c(G)$ and a $\mathbb{Q}_{\geq 0}$-sum of codegrees of some irreducible characters of a non-abelian $p$-group $G$ of odd order. We also study the relation between $c(G)$ and irreducible character codegrees for various classes of non-abelian $p$-groups, such as, $p$-groups with cyclic center, maximal class $p$-groups, GVZ $p$-groups, and others.

Abstract:For a finite group $G$ and an irreducible complex character $\chi$ of $G$, the codegree of $\chi$ is defined by $\textrm{cod}(\chi)=|G:\textrm{ker}(\chi)|/\chi(1)$, where $\textrm{ker}(\chi)$ is the kernel of $\chi$. In this paper, we show that if $H$ is a finite simple exceptional group of Lie type or a projective special linear group and $G$ is any finite group such that the character codegree sets of $G$ and $H$ coincide, then $G$ and $H$ are isomorphic.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group and $p\in \pi(G)$, and let Irr$(G)$ be the set of all irreducible complex characters of $G$. Let $\chi \in {\rm Irr}(G)$, we write ${\rm cod}(\chi)=|G:{\rm ker} \chi|/\chi(1)$, and called it the codegree of the irreducible character $\chi$. Let $N\unlhd G$, write ${\rm Irr}(G|N)=\{\chi \in {\rm Irr}(G)~|~N\nsubseteq {\rm ker}\chi\}$, and ${\rm cod}(G|N)=\{ {\rm cod}(\chi) ~|~\chi\in{\rm Irr}(G|N)\}.$ In this Ipaper, we prove that if $N\unlhd G$ and every member of ${\rm cod}(G|N')$ is not divisible by some fixed prime $p\in \pi(G)$, then $N$ has a normal $p$-complement and $N$ is solvable.

Abstract:If $G$ be a finite $p$-group and $\chi$ is a non-linear irreducible character of $G$, then $\chi(1)\leq |G/Z(G)|^{\frac{1}{2}}$. In \cite{fernandez2001groups}, Fernández-Alcober and Moretó obtained the relation between the character degree set of a finite $p$-group $G$ and its normal subgroups depending on whether $|G/Z(G)|$ is a square or not. In this paper we investigate the finite $p$-group $G$ where for any normal subgroup $N$ of $G$ with $G'\not \leq N$ either $N\leq Z(G)$ or $|NZ(G)/Z(G)|\leq p$ and obtain some alternate characterizations of such groups. We find that if $G$ is a finite $p$-group with $|G/Z(G)|=p^{2n+1}$ and $G$ satisfies the condition that for any normal subgroup $N$ of $G$ either $G'\not \leq N$ or $N\leq Z(G)$, then $cd(G)=\{1, p^{n}\}$. We also find that if $G$ is a finite $p$-group with nilpotency class not equal to $3$ and $|G/Z(G)|=p^{2n}$ and $G$ satisfies the condition that for any normal subgroup $N$ of $G$ either $G'\not \leq N$ or $|NZ(G)/Z(G)|\leq p$, then $cd(G) \subseteq \{1, p^{n-1}, p^{n}\}$.

On the sum of character codegrees of finite groups

Abstract:Let $\chi$ be an irreducible character of a group $G.$ We denote the sum of the codegrees of the irreducible characters of $G$ by $S_c(G)=\sum_{\chi\in {\rm Irr}(G)}{\rm cod}(\chi).$ We consider the question if $S_c(G)\leq S_c(C_n)$ is true for any finite group $G,$ where $n=|G|$ and $C_n$ is a cyclic group of order $n.$ We show this inequality holds for many classes of groups. In particular, we provide an affirmative answer for any finite group whose order is divisible by up to 99 primes. However, we show that the question does not hold true in all cases, by evidence of a counterexample.

Abstract:A finite group $G$ is $normally ~monomial$ if all its irreducible characters are induced from linear characters of normal subgroups of $G$. In this paper, we determine all possible irreducible character degree sets of normally monomial 5-groups of maximal class. Moreover, we give an upper bound for the largest irreducible character degree of normally monomial $p$-groups of maximal class in terms of $p$.

Abstract:Let G be a finite group and ? be an irreducible character of G, the number cod(?) = jG : Let $ G $ be a finite group and $ \chi $ be an irreducible character of $ G $, the number $ \cod(\chi) = |G: \kernel(\chi)|/\chi(1) $ is called the codegree of $ \chi $. Also, $ \cod(G) = \{ \cod(\chi) \ | \ \chi \in \Irr(G) \} $. For $d\in\cod(G)$, the multiplicity of $d$ in $G$, denoted by $m'_G(d)$, is the number of irreducible characters of $G$ having codegree $d$. A finite group $G$ is called a $T'_k$-group for some integer $k\geq 1$, if there exists $d_0\in\cod(G)$ such that $m'_G(d_0)=k$ and for every $d\in\cod(G)-\{d_0\}$, we have $m'_G(d)=1$. In this note we characterize finite $T'_k$-groups completely, where $k\geq 1$ is an integer.

Abstract:For a character χ of a finite group G , the number cod(χ)=[G:Kerχ]χ(1) is called the codegree of χ . In this paper, we show that if for every non-principal irreducible characters χ and φ of G with cod(χ)≠cod(φ) , the greatest common divisor of cod(χ) and cod(φ) is a prime-power, then either G is solvable or G/Sol(G) is isomorphic to one of the groups Alt5 or PSL2(8) , where Sol(G) is the solvable radical of the group G .

Abstract:In this paper, we characterize the finite solvable groups with non-complete character degree graphs by proving the following theorem, which generalizes a conjecture by Huppert. Suppose that G is a finite solvable group and p is a prime number dividing the degree of some irreducible character of G. If there is another such prime number q such that pq does not divide the degree of any irreducible character of G, then both p-length lp(G) and q-length lq(G) of G are at most two, and lp(G)+ lq(G)=4 if and only if pq=6 with QG/Zφ(QG)≅ 32:GL(2,3), where QG is generated by all Sylow 2-subgroups of G and Zφ(G) is a normal nilpotent subgroup of G. Moreover, the bounds are best possible.

Abstract:Journal of Algebra and Its Applications, Ahead of Print. Let [math] be a finite group and [math] be the set of irreducible characters of [math]. The codegree of an irreducible character [math] of the group [math] is defined as [math]. In this paper, we study two topics related to the character codegrees. The first result is related to the prime graph of character codegrees and we show that the codegree prime graphs of several classes of groups can be characterized only by graph theoretical terms. The second result is about the [math]-parts of the codegrees and character degrees.

Abstract:This is one of a series of papers which aims towards a classification of imprimitive affine groups of rank $3$. In this paper, a complete classification is given of such groups of characteristic $p$ such that the point stabilizer is not $p$-local, which shows that such groups are very rare, namely, the two non-isomorphic groups of the form $2^4{:}\mathrm{GL}_3(2)$ with a unique minimal normal subgroup are the only examples.

Abstract:Let $\chi$ be an irreducible character of a group $G,$ and $S_c(G)=\sum_{\chi\in {\rm Irr}(G)}{\rm cod}(\chi)$ be the sum of the codegrees of the irreducible characters of $G.$ Write ${\rm fcod} (G)=\frac{S_c(G)}{|G|}.$ We aim to explore the structure of finite groups in terms of ${\rm fcod} (G).$ On the other hand, we determine the lower bound of $S_c(G)$ for nonsolvable groups and prove that if $G$ is nonsolvable, then $S_c(G)\geq S_c(A_5)=68,$ with equality if and only if $G\cong A_5.$ Additionally, we show that there is a solvable group so that it has the codegree sum as $A_5.$

Abstract:For n ∈ N, we denote by π(n) the set of prime divisors of n. Let G be a finite group. Denote by IBrp(G) and cl(Gp′) the set of irreducible p-Brauer characters and the set of p-regular conjugacy classes of G, respectively. Set ρp(G) = {q prime: q|ϕ(1), ϕ ∈IBrp(G)}, , σp(G) = max{|π(ϕ(1))|: ϕ ∈IBrp(G)}, and . For a solvable group G, we prove that |ρp(G)| and are bounded by σp(G) and , respectively, if a well-known Diophantine equation has finite integer solutions.

Abstract:Let k ( B 0 ) and l ( B 0 ) respectively denote the number of ordinary and p -Brauer irreducible characters in the principal block B 0 of a finite group G . We prove that, if k ( B 0 )− l ( B 0 ) = 1, then l ( B 0 ) ≥ p − 1 or else p = 11 and l ( B 0 ) = 9. This follows from a more general result that for every finite group G in which all non-trivial p -elements are conjugate, l ( B 0 ) ≥ p − 1 or else p = 11 and . These results are useful in the study of principal blocks with few characters.

Abstract:Given a finite group $G$ and an irreducible complex character $\chi$ of $G$, the codegree of $\chi$ is defined as the integer ${\rm cod}(\chi)=|G:\ker\chi|/\chi(1)$. It was conjectured by G. Qian in [13] that, for every element $g$ of $G$, there exists an irreducible character $\chi$ of $G$ such that ${\rm cod}(\chi)$ is a multiple of the order of $g$; the conjecture has been verified under the assumption that $G$ is solvable ([13]) or almost-simple ([11]). In this paper, we prove that Qian's conjecture is true for every finite group whose Fitting subgroup is trivial, and we show that the analysis of the full conjecture can be reduced to groups having a solvable socle.
