Abstract:For an irreducible complex character $\chi$ of a finite group $G$, the codegree of $\chi$ is defined by $|G:\ker(\chi)|/\chi(1)$, where $\ker(\chi)$ is the kernel of $\chi$. Given a prime $p$, we provide a classification of finite groups in which every irreducible complex character has either $p'$-degree or $p'$-codegree.

Abstract:Let $\chi$ be an irreducible character of a group $G.$ We denote the sum of the codegrees of the irreducible characters of $G$ by $S_c(G)=\sum_{\chi\in {\rm Irr}(G)}{\rm cod}(\chi).$ We consider the question if $S_c(G)\leq S_c(C_n)$ is true for any finite group $G,$ where $n=|G|$ and $C_n$ is a cyclic group of order $n.$ We show this inequality holds for many classes of groups. In particular, we provide an affirmative answer for any finite group whose order is divisible by up to 99 primes. However, we show that the question does not hold true in all cases, by evidence of a counterexample.

Abstract:For a finite group $G$ and an irreducible complex character $\chi$ of $G$, the codegree of $\chi$ is defined by $\textrm{cod}(\chi)=|G:\textrm{ker}(\chi)|/\chi(1)$, where $\textrm{ker}(\chi)$ is the kernel of $\chi$. In this paper, we show that if $H$ is a finite simple exceptional group of Lie type or a projective special linear group and $G$ is any finite group such that the character codegree sets of $G$ and $H$ coincide, then $G$ and $H$ are isomorphic.

Abstract:Let G be a finite group and let be an irreducible character of G. The number is called the codegree of the character . We provide several relations between the structure of G and the codegrees of the characters in a given subset of , where is the set of all complex irreducible characters of G. For example, we show that if the codegrees of all strongly monolithic characters of G are odd, then G is solvable, analogous to the well-known fact that if all irreducible character degrees of a finite group are odd, then that group is solvable.

Abstract:Let $\chi$ be an irreducible character of a group $G,$ and $S_c(G)=\sum_{\chi\in {\rm Irr}(G)}{\rm cod}(\chi)$ be the sum of the codegrees of the irreducible characters of $G.$ Write ${\rm fcod} (G)=\frac{S_c(G)}{|G|}.$ We aim to explore the structure of finite groups in terms of ${\rm fcod} (G).$ On the other hand, we determine the lower bound of $S_c(G)$ for nonsolvable groups and prove that if $G$ is nonsolvable, then $S_c(G)\geq S_c(A_5)=68,$ with equality if and only if $G\cong A_5.$ Additionally, we show that there is a solvable group so that it has the codegree sum as $A_5.$

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group, and let $d$ be the degree of an irreducible character of $G$ such that $|G|=d(d+e)$ for some $e>1$. Consider the case when $G$ is solvable, $d$ is square-free, and $(d,d+e)=1$. We wish to explore an equivalent condition on $G$ when $d\in\text{cd}(G)$. We show that if $d\in\text{cd}(G)$ then there is a sequence of congruences relating the prime power factors of $d+e$ to the product of prime factors of $d$ such that the product of the moduli in this sequence of congruences is $d$. Moreover, the argument will hold in both directions.

Abstract:In this paper, we characterize the finite solvable groups with non-complete character degree graphs by proving the following theorem, which generalizes a conjecture by Huppert. Suppose that G is a finite solvable group and p is a prime number dividing the degree of some irreducible character of G. If there is another such prime number q such that pq does not divide the degree of any irreducible character of G, then both p-length lp(G) and q-length lq(G) of G are at most two, and lp(G)+ lq(G)=4 if and only if pq=6 with QG/Zφ(QG)≅ 32:GL(2,3), where QG is generated by all Sylow 2-subgroups of G and Zφ(G) is a normal nilpotent subgroup of G. Moreover, the bounds are best possible.

Abstract:Let $H$ be a nonabelian finite simple group. Huppert's conjecture asserts that if $G$ is a finite group with the same set of complex character degrees as $H$, then $G\cong H\times A$ for some abelian group $A$. Over the past two decades, several specific cases of this conjecture have been addressed. Recently, attention has shifted to the analogous conjecture for character codegrees: if $G$ has the same set of character codegrees as $H$, then $G\cong H$. Unfortunately, both problems have primarily been examined on a case-by-case basis. In this paper and the companion [HM22], we present a more unified approach to the codegree conjecture and confirm it for several families of simple groups.

The codegree of $\chi$ is defined as $\cod(\chi)=\frac{|G:\ker(\chi)|}{\chi(1)}$ and $\cod(G)=\{\cod(\chi) \ |\ \chi\in \irr(G)\}$ is called the set of codegrees of $G$. In this paper, we show that the set of codegrees of $\Sy_4(4), \U_4(2)$, $\Sy_4(q)\ (q \geq 4)$, $\U_4(3)$, ${}^2\F_4(2)'$, $\J_3$, $\G_2(3)$, $\A_9$, $\J_2$, $\PSL(4,3)$, $\McL$, $\Sy_4(5)$, $\G_2(4)$, $\HS$, $\ON$ and $\M_{24}$ determines the group up to isomorphism.

Abstract:Let G be a finite group and ? be an irreducible character of G, the number cod(?) = jG : Let $ G $ be a finite group and $ \chi $ be an irreducible character of $ G $, the number $ \cod(\chi) = |G: \kernel(\chi)|/\chi(1) $ is called the codegree of $ \chi $. Also, $ \cod(G) = \{ \cod(\chi) \ | \ \chi \in \Irr(G) \} $. For $d\in\cod(G)$, the multiplicity of $d$ in $G$, denoted by $m'_G(d)$, is the number of irreducible characters of $G$ having codegree $d$. A finite group $G$ is called a $T'_k$-group for some integer $k\geq 1$, if there exists $d_0\in\cod(G)$ such that $m'_G(d_0)=k$ and for every $d\in\cod(G)-\{d_0\}$, we have $m'_G(d)=1$. In this note we characterize finite $T'_k$-groups completely, where $k\geq 1$ is an integer.

Abstract:Journal of Algebra and Its Applications, Ahead of Print. Let [math] be a finite group and [math] be the set of irreducible characters of [math]. The codegree of an irreducible character [math] of the group [math] is defined as [math]. In this paper, we study two topics related to the character codegrees. The first result is related to the prime graph of character codegrees and we show that the codegree prime graphs of several classes of groups can be characterized only by graph theoretical terms. The second result is about the [math]-parts of the codegrees and character degrees.

Abstract:Given a finite group $G$ and an irreducible complex character $\chi$ of $G$, the codegree of $\chi$ is defined as the integer ${\rm cod}(\chi)=|G:\ker\chi|/\chi(1)$. It was conjectured by G. Qian in [13] that, for every element $g$ of $G$, there exists an irreducible character $\chi$ of $G$ such that ${\rm cod}(\chi)$ is a multiple of the order of $g$; the conjecture has been verified under the assumption that $G$ is solvable ([13]) or almost-simple ([11]). In this paper, we prove that Qian's conjecture is true for every finite group whose Fitting subgroup is trivial, and we show that the analysis of the full conjecture can be reduced to groups having a solvable socle.

Abstract:A classical theorem on character degrees states that if a finite group has fewer than four character degrees, then the group is solvable. We prove a corresponding result on character values by showing that if a finite group has fewer than eight character values in its character table, then the group is solvable. This confirms a conjecture of T. Sakurai. We also classify non-solvable groups with exactly eight character values.

Abstract:Let G be a finite group, let Irr ( G ) be the set of all complex irreducible characters of G and let cd ( G ) be the set of all degrees of characters in Irr(G). Let ρ(G) be the set of all primes that divide some degrees in cd(G). The character degree graph Δ(G) of G is the simple undirected graph with vertex set ρ(G) and in which two distinct vertices p and q are adjacent if there exists a character degree r∈cd(G) such that r is divisible by the product pq . In this paper we obtain a necessary condition for the character degree graph Δ(G) of a solvable group G to be eulerian. We also prove that every n – 2 regular graph on n vertices where n is even and n≥4 is the character degree graph of some solvable group. In the last part of the paper we give a bound for the number of Eulerian character degree graphs in terms of number of vertices.
