Abstract:In this paper, we characterize the finite solvable groups with non-complete character degree graphs by proving the following theorem, which generalizes a conjecture by Huppert. Suppose that G is a finite solvable group and p is a prime number dividing the degree of some irreducible character of G. If there is another such prime number q such that pq does not divide the degree of any irreducible character of G, then both p-length lp(G) and q-length lq(G) of G are at most two, and lp(G)+ lq(G)=4 if and only if pq=6 with QG/Zφ(QG)≅ 32:GL(2,3), where QG is generated by all Sylow 2-subgroups of G and Zφ(G) is a normal nilpotent subgroup of G. Moreover, the bounds are best possible.

Abstract:Let G be a finite group with the degree set cd(G) of its complex irreducible characters. We call that G satisfies the prime-power hypothesis if, for distinct degrees χ(1),ψ(1)∈cd(G), the greatest common divisor gcd⁡(χ(1),ψ(1)) is a prime power. In this paper, we show that |cd(G)|⩽18 if G is a nonsolvable group satisfying the prime-power hypothesis.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite nilpotent group, $\chi$ and $\psi$ be irreducible complex characters of $G$ of prime degree. Assume that $\chi(1)=p$. Then either the product $\chi\psi$ is a multiple of an irreducible character or $\chi\psi$ is the linear combination of at least $\frac{p+1}{2}$ distinct irreducible characters.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group, and let $d$ be the degree of an irreducible character of $G$ such that $|G|=d(d+e)$ for some $e>1$. Consider the case when $G$ is solvable, $d$ is square-free, and $(d,d+e)=1$. We wish to explore an equivalent condition on $G$ when $d\in\text{cd}(G)$. We show that if $d\in\text{cd}(G)$ then there is a sequence of congruences relating the prime power factors of $d+e$ to the product of prime factors of $d$ such that the product of the moduli in this sequence of congruences is $d$. Moreover, the argument will hold in both directions.

Abstract:For a character χ of a finite group G , the number cod(χ)=[G:Kerχ]χ(1) is called the codegree of χ . In this paper, we show that if for every non-principal irreducible characters χ and φ of G with cod(χ)≠cod(φ) , the greatest common divisor of cod(χ) and cod(φ) is a prime-power, then either G is solvable or G/Sol(G) is isomorphic to one of the groups Alt5 or PSL2(8) , where Sol(G) is the solvable radical of the group G .

Abstract:A classical theorem on character degrees states that if a finite group has fewer than four character degrees, then the group is solvable. We prove a corresponding result on character values by showing that if a finite group has fewer than eight character values in its character table, then the group is solvable. This confirms a conjecture of T. Sakurai. We also classify non-solvable groups with exactly eight character values.

Abstract:We find the nonabelian finite simple groups with order prime divisors not exceeding 1000. More generally, we determine the sets of nonabelian finite simple groups whose maximal order prime divisor is a fixed prime less than 1000. Our results are based on calculations in the computer algebra system GAP.

Let [math] be the set of all irreducible complex character degrees of [math] and denote by [math] the set of all primes which divide some character degree of [math]. The character-prime graph [math] associated to [math] is a simple undirected graph whose vertex set is [math] and there is an edge between two distinct primes [math] and [math] if and only if the product [math] divides some character degree of [math]. We show that the finite nonabelian simple groups [math], [math], [math], [math], [math] and [math] are uniquely determined by their degree-patterns and orders.

Abstract:The prime graph or the Gruenberg–Kegel graph of a finite group G is the graph whose vertices are the prime divisors of the order of G and two distinct vertices p and q are adjacent if and only if G contains an element of order pq . This paper continues the study of the problem of describing the finite nonsolvable groups whose prime graphs do not contain triangles. We describe the groups in the case when a group has an element of order 6 and the order of its solvable radical is divisible by a prime greater than 3.

Abstract:Let $K/\Q$ be a cyclic extension of number fields with Galois group $G$. We study the ideal classes of primes $\mathfrak{p}$ of $K$ of residue degree bigger than one in the class group of $K$. In particular, we explore such extensions $K/\Q$ for which there exist an integer $f>1$ such that the ideal classes of primes $\mathfrak{p}$ of $K$ of residue degree $f$ generate the full class group of $K$. It is shown that there are many such fields. These results are used to obtain information on class group of $K$; like rank of $\ell-$torsion of the class group, factors of class number, fields with class group of certain exponents, and even structure of class group in some cases. Moreover, such $f$ can be used to construct annihilators of the class groups.

Abstract:Let $\chi$ be an irreducible character of a group $G.$ We denote the sum of the codegrees of the irreducible characters of $G$ by $S_c(G)=\sum_{\chi\in {\rm Irr}(G)}{\rm cod}(\chi).$ We consider the question if $S_c(G)\leq S_c(C_n)$ is true for any finite group $G,$ where $n=|G|$ and $C_n$ is a cyclic group of order $n.$ We show this inequality holds for many classes of groups. In particular, we provide an affirmative answer for any finite group whose order is divisible by up to 99 primes. However, we show that the question does not hold true in all cases, by evidence of a counterexample.
