Abstract:We first describe, over a field K of characteristic different from 2, the orbits for the adjoint actions of the Lie groups PGL(2, K) and PSL(2, K) on their Lie algebra sl(2, K). While the former are well known, the latter lead to the resolution of generalised Pell-Fermat equations which characterise the corresponding orbit. The synthetic approach enables to change the base field, and we illustrate this picture over the fields with three and five elements, in relation with the geometry of the tetrahedral and icosahedral groups. While the results may appear familiar, they do not seem to be covered in such generality or detail by the existing literature. We apply this discussion to partition the set of PSL(2, Z)-classes of integral binary quadratic forms into groups of PSL(2, K)-classes. When K = C we obtain the class groups of a given discriminant. Then we provide a complete description of their partition into PSL(2, Q)-classes in terms of Hilbert symbols, and relate this to the partition into genera. The results are classical, but our geometrical approach is of independent interest as it may yield new insights into the geometry of Gauss composition, and unify the picture over function fields. Finally we provide a geometric interpretation in the modular orbifold PSL(2, Z) \ H for when two points or two closed geodesics correspond to PSL(2, K)-equivalent quadratic forms, in terms of hyperbolic distances and angles between those modular cycles. These geometric quantities are related to linking numbers of modular knots. Their distribution properties could be studied using the geometry of the quadratic lattice (sl(2, Z), det) but such investigations are not pursued here.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problems that this paper attempts to solve mainly focus on the following aspects: 1. **Understanding the adjoint action of PSL_2(K) and its orbits**: - The author first describes the orbits of the adjoint action of the Lie groups PGL_2(K) and PSL_2(K) on their Lie algebra sl_2(K) over a field K with characteristic not equal to 2. Although the former (the orbits of PGL_2(K)) has been widely studied, the latter (the orbits of PSL_2(K)) is related to the solutions of the generalized Pell - Fermat equations, which characterize the corresponding orbits. - Specifically, the orbits of the adjoint action of PSL_2(K) can be parameterized by the solutions of the generalized Pell - Fermat equation \(x^2-\delta y^2 = \chi\). This shows that when two elements \(a, b\in sl_2(K)\) have a determinant of \(-\delta\) and their cross - ratio \(\text{bir}(a, b)\) does not belong to \(\{1,\infty\}\), there exists \(C\in SL_2(K)\) such that \(CaC^{-1}=b\), and \(C\) can be represented by the solutions of the above equation. 2. **Classifying binary quadratic forms into PSL_2(K)-classes**: - The paper applies the above discussion to divide the PSL_2(Z)-classes of integer binary quadratic forms into finer PSL_2(K)-classes. In particular, when \(K = \mathbb{C}\), the class group of a given discriminant can be obtained. Then, the author provides a complete description of the Hilbert symbol, thereby further dividing these classes into PSL_2(Q)-classes and relating them to the genus partition. 3. **Geometric interpretation and equivalence in the moduli space**: - Finally, the paper provides a geometric interpretation: in the moduli space \(PSL_2(\mathbb{Z})\backslash\mathcal{H}\), when two points or two closed geodesics correspond to PSL_2(K)-equivalent quadratic forms, this equivalence can be described by hyperbolic distances and angles. These geometric quantities are related to the linking numbers of modular knots, although this paper does not further explore the distribution problems of these properties. In summary, the main objective of the paper is to better understand the classification of binary quadratic forms and their equivalence on different fields and to give a geometric interpretation of these equivalences by studying the adjoint action of PSL_2(K) and its orbits. This research not only helps to understand abstract algebraic structures but also provides a new perspective for Gauss combinatorial geometry.
