Abstract:The space of representations of a surface group into a given simple Lie group is a very active area of research and is particularly relevant to higher Teichmüller theory. For a closed surface, classical Teichmüller space is a connected component of the moduli space of representations into $PSL(2, \mathbb{R})$ and [Fock:2006] showed that the space of positive representations into $PSL(k, \mathbb{R})$ coincides with the Hitchin component. In this paper we study representations of finitely generated groups into $PGL(k, \mathbb{C})$ and determine necessary and sufficient conditions for such a representation to be conjugate into $PGL(k, \mathbb{R})$. In this way, we identify representations in the larger representation variety which are conjugate in $PGL(k, \mathbb{C})$ to a representation in $\hom ( \pi_1 (\Sigma), PGL(k, \mathbb{R}) ) / PGL(k, \mathbb{R})$.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to determine whether certain specific representations can be conjugated into \( \text{PGL}_k(\mathbb{R}) \) within a larger representation variety. Specifically, the paper focuses on representations of finitely - generated groups into \( \text{PGL}_k(\mathbb{C}) \) and studies when these representations can be conjugated into \( \text{PGL}_k(\mathbb{R}) \). This problem is closely related to higher - order Teichmüller theory, especially when studying the representation space of surface groups, how to determine whether these representations can be mapped into the real projective linear group \( \text{PGL}_k(\mathbb{R}) \).
### Core problems of the paper
1. **Determining necessary and sufficient conditions**: The main objective of the paper is to give the necessary and sufficient conditions for when a representation of a finitely - generated group into \( \text{PGL}_k(\mathbb{C}) \) can be conjugated into \( \text{PGL}_k(\mathbb{R}) \).
2. **Using eigenvalues and eigen - directions**: The paper determines these conditions by analyzing eigenvalues and eigen - directions. In particular, for a given representation \( \alpha \), if its eigenvalues and eigen - directions satisfy certain specific functional relationships, then the representation can be conjugated into \( \text{PGL}_k(\mathbb{R}) \).
3. **Introducing Fock - Goncharov coordinates**: The paper also introduces Fock - Goncharov coordinates and uses invariants such as cross - ratios and triple - ratios to study the conjugation properties of representations.
### Specific methods
1. **Functions of eigenvalues and eigen - directions**: The paper defines a set of functions \( f_1, f_2,\ldots, f_n \) that depend on eigenvalues and eigen - directions. If the values of these functions on a certain representation \( \alpha \) are zero, then \( \alpha \) can be conjugated into \( \text{PGL}_k(\mathbb{R}) \).
2. **Fock - Goncharov coordinates**: By introducing Fock - Goncharov coordinates, the paper provides a systematic method to calculate cross - ratios and triple - ratios, thereby determining whether a representation can be conjugated into \( \text{PGL}_k(\mathbb{R}) \).
3. **Conjugation action**: The paper studies in detail the influence of the conjugation action on eigen - directions, especially how to fix hyperbolic eigen - directions and exchange pairs of elliptic eigen - directions through the conjugation action.
### Application background
- **Teichmüller space**: The classical Teichmüller space is the space for studying discrete and faithful representations of surface groups into \( \text{PSL}_2(\mathbb{R}) \). Higher - order Teichmüller theory considers higher - rank simple Lie groups, such as \( \text{PSL}_k(\mathbb{R}) \).
- **Hitchin component**: When the Lie group is split, real, and simple, these representation spaces will form a Hitchin component, that is, the connected component of the moduli space containing the principal Fuchsian representation.
### Main conclusions
- **Necessary and sufficient conditions**: The paper gives the necessary and sufficient conditions for when a representation of a finitely - generated group into \( \text{PGL}_k(\mathbb{C}) \) can be conjugated into \( \text{PGL}_k(\mathbb{R}) \).
- **Use of Fock - Goncharov coordinates**: By introducing Fock - Goncharov coordinates, the paper provides an effective method to determine these conditions.
