Abstract:In this paper, we give a classification of the subgroups of $\textrm{PSL}(3, \mathbb{C})$ that act on $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbb{C}}^2$ in such a way that their Kulkarni limit set has finitely many lines in general position lines. These are the elementary groups.

Abstract: Let $\mathcal{S}$ be a finite thick generalized quadrangle, and suppose that $G$ is an automorphism group of $\mathcal{S}$. If $G$ acts primitively on both the points and lines of $\mathcal{S}$, then it is known that $G$ must be almost simple. In this paper, we show that if the socle of $G$ is $\mathrm{PSL}(2,q)$ with $q\geq4$, then $q=9$ and $\mathcal{S}$ is the unique generalized quadrangle of order $2$.

Abstract:We first describe, over a field K of characteristic different from 2, the orbits for the adjoint actions of the Lie groups PGL(2, K) and PSL(2, K) on their Lie algebra sl(2, K). While the former are well known, the latter lead to the resolution of generalised Pell-Fermat equations which characterise the corresponding orbit. The synthetic approach enables to change the base field, and we illustrate this picture over the fields with three and five elements, in relation with the geometry of the tetrahedral and icosahedral groups. While the results may appear familiar, they do not seem to be covered in such generality or detail by the existing literature. We apply this discussion to partition the set of PSL(2, Z)-classes of integral binary quadratic forms into groups of PSL(2, K)-classes. When K = C we obtain the class groups of a given discriminant. Then we provide a complete description of their partition into PSL(2, Q)-classes in terms of Hilbert symbols, and relate this to the partition into genera. The results are classical, but our geometrical approach is of independent interest as it may yield new insights into the geometry of Gauss composition, and unify the picture over function fields. Finally we provide a geometric interpretation in the modular orbifold PSL(2, Z) \ H for when two points or two closed geodesics correspond to PSL(2, K)-equivalent quadratic forms, in terms of hyperbolic distances and angles between those modular cycles. These geometric quantities are related to linking numbers of modular knots. Their distribution properties could be studied using the geometry of the quadratic lattice (sl(2, Z), det) but such investigations are not pursued here.

Elementary abelian subgroups: from algebraic groups to finite groups

Abstract:We describe a new approach for classifying conjugacy classes of elementary abelian subgroups in simple algebraic groups over an algebraically closed field, and understanding the normaliser and centraliser structure of these. For toral subgroups, we give an effective classification algorithm. For non-toral elementary abelian subgroups, we focus on algebraic groups of exceptional type with a view to future applications, and in this case we provide tables explicitly describing the subgroups and their local structure. We then describe how to transfer results to the corresponding finite groups of Lie type using the Lang-Steinberg Theorem; this will be used in forthcoming work to complete the classification of elementary abelian $p$-subgroups for torsion primes $p$ in finite groups of exceptional Lie type. Such classification results are important for determining the maximal $p$-local subgroups and $p$-radical subgroups, both of which play a crucial role in modular representation theory.

Abstract:Classical Kleinian groups are discrete subgroups of $PSL(2,\C)$ acting on the complex projective line $¶^1$, which actually coincides with the Riemann sphere, with non-empty region of discontinuity. These can also be regarded as the monodromy groups of certain differential equations. These groups have played a major role in many aspects of mathematics for decades, and also in physics. It is thus natural to study discrete subgroups of the projective group $PSL(n,\C)$, $ n > 2$. Surprisingly, this is a branch of mathematics which is in its childhood, and in this article we give an overview of it.

Abstract:In this paper we determine the classical simple groups of dimension r=3,5 which are (2,3)-generated (the cases r = 2, 4 are known). If r = 3, they are PSL_3(q), q <> 4, and PSU_3(q^2), q^2 <> 9, 25. If r = 5 they are PSL_5(q), for all q, and PSU_5(q^2), q^2 >= 9. Also, the soluble group PSU_3(4) is not (2,3)-generated. We give explicit (2,3)-generators of the linear preimages, in the special linear groups, of the (2,3)-generated simple groups.

Extension of Elementary $P$-Groups and Its Application in Classification of Groups of Prime Exponent

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime number and $\mathbb{Z}_p=\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$. We study finite groups with abelian derived subgroup and exponent $p$ in terms of group extension data and their matrix presentations. We show a one-to-one correspondence between the following two sets: (i) the isoclasses of class 2 groups of exponent $p$ and order $p^{m+n}$ and with derived subgroup $\mathbb{Z}_p^n$, and (ii) the set $\text{Gr}(n,\text{AS}_m(\mathbb{Z}_p))/\text{GL}_m(\mathbb{Z}_p)$ of orbits of $\text{Gr}(n,\text{AS}_m(\mathbb{Z}_p))$ under the congruence action by $\text{GL}_m(\mathbb{Z}_p)$, where $\text{Gr}(n,\text{AS}_m(\mathbb{Z}_p))$ is the set of $n$-dimensional subspaces of anti-symmetric matrices of order $m$ over $\mathbb{Z}_p$. We give a description of the orbit spaces $\text{Gr}(2, \text{AS}_m(\mathbb{Z}_p))/\text{GL}_m(\mathbb{Z}_p)$ for all $m$ and $p$ by applying the theory of pencils of anti-symmetric matrices. Based on this, we show complete sets of representatives of orbits of $\text{Gr}(3,\text{AS}_4(\mathbb{Z}_3))/\text{GL}_4(\mathbb{Z}_3)$, $\text{Gr}(4, \text{AS}_4(\mathbb{Z}_3))/\text{GL}_4(\mathbb{Z}_3)$ and $\text{Gr}(3, \text{AS}_5(\mathbb{Z}_3))/\text{GL}_5(\mathbb{Z}_3)$. As a consequence, we obtain a classification of corresponding class 2 groups of exponent $p$. In particular, we recover the classification of groups with exponent 3 and order $\le 3^8$.

Abstract:We present a method to compute finite index subgroups of $PSL_2(\mathbb{Z})$. Our strategy follows Kulkarni's ideas, the main contribution being a recursive method to compute bivalent trees and their automorphism group. As a concrete application, we compute all subgroups of index up to 20. We then use this database to produce tables with several arithmetical properties.

Abstract:Motivated by a question of M. Kapovich, we show that the $\mathbb{Z}^2$ subgroups of $\mathsf{SL}_3(\mathbb{R})$ that are regular in the language of Kapovich--Leeb--Porti, or divergent in the sense of Guichard--Wienhard, are precisely the lattices in minimal horospherical subgroups. This rules out any relative Anosov subgroups of $\mathsf{SL}_3(\mathbb{R})$ that are not in fact Gromov-hyperbolic. By work of Oh, it also follows that a Zariski-dense discrete subgroup $\Gamma$ of $\mathsf{SL}_3(\mathbb{R})$ contains a regular $\mathbb{Z}^2$ if and only if $\Gamma$ is commensurable to a conjugate of $\mathsf{SL}_3(\mathbb{Z})$. In particular, a Zariski-dense regular subgroup of $\mathsf{SL}_3(\mathbb{R})$ contains no $\mathbb{Z}^2$ subgroups.

Abstract:Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over a number field $L$ and for a finite set $S$ of primes, let $\rho_{E,S} : {\rm Gal}(\overline{L}/L) \to {\rm GL}_{2}(\mathbb{Z}_{S})$ be the $S$-adic Galois representation. If $L \cap \mathbb{Q}(\zeta_{n}) = \mathbb{Q}$ for all positive integers $n$ whose prime factors are in $S$, then $\det \rho_{E,S} : {\rm Gal}(\overline{L}/L) \to \mathbb{Z}_{S}^{\times}$ is surjective. We say that a finite index subgroup $H \subseteq {\rm GL}_{2}(\mathbb{Z}_{S})$ is minimal if $\det : H \to \mathbb{Z}_{S}^{\times}$ is surjective, but $\det : K \to \mathbb{Z}_{S}^{\times}$ is not surjective for any proper closed subgroup $K$ of $H$. We show that there are no minimal subgroups of ${\rm GL}_{2}(\mathbb{Z}_{S})$ unless $S = \{ 2 \}$, while minimal subgroups of ${\rm GL}_{2}(\mathbb{Z}_{2})$ are plentiful. We give models for all the genus $0$ modular curves associated to minimal subgroups of ${\rm GL}_{2}(\mathbb{Z}_{2})$, and construct an infinite family of elliptic curves over imaginary quadratic fields with bad reduction only at $2$ and with minimal $2$-adic image.

In particular, our results may be applied to the automorphism groups of any finitely generated projective modules over commutative unital rings of rank $\geq 3$ at every prime ideal.

Abstract:A classical problem in finite group theory dating back to Jordan, Klein, E. H. Moore, Dickson, Blichfeldt etc. is to determine all finite subgroups in SL(n, C) up to conjugation for some small values of n. This question is important in group theory as well as in the study of quotient singularities. Some results of Blichfeldt when n = 3 4 were generalized to the case of finite primitive subgroups of SL(5, C) and SL(7, C) by Brauer and Wales. The purpose of this article is to consider the following case. Let p be any odd prime number and G be a finite primitive subgroup of SL(p, C) containing a non-trivial monomial normal subgroup H so that H has a non-scalar diagonal matrix. We will classify all these groups G up to conjugation in SL(p, C) by exhibiting the generators of G and representing G as some group extensions. In particular, see the Appendix for a list of these subgroups when p = 5 or 7.

Abstract:We characterize when a finite group G possesses a Sylow 3-subgroup P with abelianization of order 9 in terms of the number of height zero characters lying in the principal 3-block of G, settling a conjecture put forward by Navarro, Sambale, and Tiep in 2018. Along the way, we show that a recent result by Laradji on the number of character of height zero in a block that lie above a given character of some normal subgroup holds, without any hypothesis on the group for blocks of maximal defect.

Abstract:For a given ǫ > 0, we show that there exist two finite index sub- groups of P SL2(Z) which are (1 + ǫ)-quasisymmetrically conjugated and the conjugation homeomorphism is not conformal. This implies that for any ǫ > 0 there are two finite regular covers of the Modular once punctured torus T0 (or just the Modular torus) and a (1 + ǫ)-quasiconformal between them that is not homotopic to a conformal map. As an application of the above results, we show that the orbit of the basepoint in the Teichmuller space T(Sp) of the punctured solenoid Sp under the action of the corresponding Modular group (which is the mapping class group of Sp (5), (6)) has the closure in T(Sp) strictly larger than the orbit and that the closure is necessarily uncountable.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{C}$ be a smooth, projective, geometrically integral curve defined over a perfect field $\mathbb{F}$. Let $k=\mathbb{F}(\mathcal{C})$ be the function field of $\mathcal{C}$. Let $\mathbf{G}$ be a split simply connected semisimple $\mathbb{Z}$-group scheme. Let $\mathcal{S}$ be a finite set of places of $\mathcal{C}$. In this paper, we investigate on the conjugacy classes of maximal unipotent subgroups of $\mathcal{S}$-arithmetic subgroups. These are parameterized thanks to the Picard group of $\mathcal{O}_{\mathcal{S}}$ and the rank of $\mathbf{G}$. Furthermore, these maximal unipotent subgroups can be realized as the unipotent part of natural stabilizer, which are the stabilizers of sectors of the associated Bruhat-Tits building. We decompose these natural stabilizers in terms of their diagonalisable part and unipotent part, and we precise the group structure of the diagonalisable part.

Abstract:We reduce a case of the hidden subgroup problem (HSP) in SL(2; q), PSL(2; q), and PGL(2; q), three related families of finite groups of Lie type, to efficiently solvable HSPs in the affine group AGL(1; q). These groups act on projective space in an almost 3-transitive way, and we use this fact in each group to distinguish conjugates of its Borel (upper triangular) subgroup, which is also the stabilizer subgroup of an element of projective space. Our observation is mainly group-theoretic, and as such breaks little new ground in quantum algorithms. Nonetheless, these appear to be the first positive results on the HSP in finite simple groups such as PSL(2; q).

Abstract:In the late 19th century, Klein inaugurated a program for describing the finite subgroups of $PGL_2(k)$ by treating the case in which the field $k$ is the complex numbers. Gierster and Moore extended Klein's arguments to deal with finite fields. In the past century, additional contributions to this problem were made by Serre, Suzuki, and Beauville, among others. We complete this program by giving a classification of the finite subgroups of $PGL_2(k)$ with order divisible by $p$, up to conjugation, for an arbitrary field $k$ of positive characteristic $p$.
