Abstract:In this paper, we study the Majorana representations of symplectic and orthogonal groups over GF ⁢ ( 2 ) . We show that such a group admits a Majorana representation only if it can be embedded into the Monster group as a 2 ⁢ A -generated subgroup.

Abstract:Majorana theory was introduced by A. A. Ivanov as an axiomatic framework in which to study objects related to the Monster simple group and the Griess algebra. Since its inception, it has been used to construct a number of new and important subalgebras of the Griess algebra. The objects at the centre of the theory are known as Majorana algebras and can be studied either in their own right, or as Majorana representations of finite groups. In this paper, we present an algorithm to construct the Majorana representations of a given group. We also list a number of groups for which we have constructed Majorana representations, including some which give new examples of Majorana algebras. This work is inspired by that of A. Seress.

Abstract:We consider Majorana algebras generated by three Majorana axes $a_0$, $a_1$ and $a_2$ such that $a_0$ and $a_1$ generate a dihedral algebra of type 2A. We show that such an algebra must occur as a Majorana representation of one of 27 groups. These 27 groups coincide with the subgroups of the Monster which are generated by three 2A-involutions $a$, $b$ and $c$ such that $ab$ is also a 2A-involution, which were classified by S. P. Norton in 1985. Our work relies on that of S. Decelle and consists of showing that certain groups do not admit Majorana representations.

A computer-friendly construction of the monster

Abstract:Let $\mathbb{M}$ be the monster group which is the largest sporadic finite simple group, and has first been constructed in 1982 by Griess. In 1985, Conway has constructed a 196884-dimensional representation $\rho$ of $\mathbb{M}$ with matrix coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}[\frac{1}{2}]$. So these matrices may be reduced modulo any (not necessarily prime) odd number $p$, leading to representations of $\mathbb{M}$ in odd characteristic. The representation $\rho$ is based on representations of two maximal subgroups $G_{x0}$ and $N_0$ of $\mathbb{M}$. In ATLAS notation, $G_{x0}$ has structure $2_+^{1+24}.\mbox{Co}_1$ and $N_0$ has structure $2^{2+11+22}.( M_{24} \times S_3)$. Conway has constructed an explicit set of generators of $N_0$, but not of $G_{x0}$.

Conjugacy class fusion from four maximal subgroups of the Monster

Abstract:We determine the conjugacy class fusion from certain maximal subgroups of the Monster to the Monster, to justify the addition of these data to the Character Table Library in the computational algebra system GAP. The maximal subgroups in question are $(\text{PSL}_2(11) {\times} \text{PSL}_2(11)){:}4$, $11^2{:}(5 {\times} 2\text{A}_5)$, $7^2{:}\text{SL}_2(7)$, and $\text{PSL}_2(19){:}2$. Our proofs are supported by reproducible calculations carried out using the Python package mmgroup, a computational construction of the Monster recently developed by Seysen.

Abstract:Let $mathbf G$ be a complex orthogonal or complex symplectic group, and let $G$ be a real form of $mathbf G$, namely $G$ is a real orthogonal group, a real symplectic group, a quaternionic orthogonal group, or a quaternionic symplectic group. For a fixed parity $mathbb pin mathbb Z/2mathbb Z$, we define a set $mathrm{Nil}^{mathbb p}_{mathbf G}(mathfrak g)$ of nilpotent $mathbf G$-orbits $mathfrak g$ (the Lie algebra of $mathbf G$). When $mathbb p$ is the parity of the dimension of the standard module of $mathbf G$, this is the set of the stably trivial special nilpotent orbits, which includes all rigid special nilpotent orbits. For each $mathcal O in mathrm{Nil}^{mathbb p}_{mathbf G}(mathfrak g)$, we construct all unipotent representations of $G$ (or its metaplectic cover when $G$ is a real symplectic group and $mathbb p$ is odd) attached to $mathcal O$ via the method of theta lifting and show particular that they are unitary.

Abstract:Majorana stars, the $2S$ spin coherent states that are orthogonal to a spin-$S$ state, offer an elegant method to visualize quantum states, disclosing their intrinsic symmetries. These states are naturally described by the corresponding multipoles. These quantities can be experimentally determined and allow for an SU(2)-invariant analysis. We investigate the relationship between Majorana constellations and state multipoles, thus providing insights into the underlying symmetries of the system. We illustrate our approach with some relevant and informative examples.

Abstract:Majorana’s stellar representation provides an intuitive picture in which quantum states in high-dimensional Hilbert space can be observed using the trajectory of Majorana stars. We consider the Majorana’s stellar representation of the quantum geometric tensor for a spin state up to spin-3/2. The real and imaginary parts of the quantum geometric tensor, corresponding to the quantum metric tensor and Berry curvature, are therefore obtained in terms of the Majorana stars. Moreover, we work out the expressions of quantum geometric tensor for arbitrary spin in some important cases. Our results will benefit the comprehension of the quantum geometric tensor and provide interesting relations between the quantum geometric tensor and Majorana’s stars.
Vertex operators for imaginary $\mathfrak{gl}_2$ subalgebras in the Monster Lie Algebra

Abstract:The Monster Lie algebra $\mathfrak m$ is a quotient of the physical space of the vertex algebra $V=V^\natural\otimes V_{1,1}$, where $V^\natural$ is the Moonshine module vertex operator algebra of Frenkel, Lepowsky, and Meurman, and $V_{1,1}$ is the vertex algebra corresponding to the rank 2 even unimodular lattice $\textrm{II}_{1,1}$. We construct vertex algebra elements that project to bases for subalgebras of $\mathfrak m$ isomorphic to $\mathfrak{gl}_{2}$, corresponding to each imaginary simple root, denoted $(1,j)$ for $j>0$. Our method requires the existence of pairs of primary vectors in $V^{\natural}$ satisfying some natural conditions, which we prove. We show that the action of the Monster finite simple group $\mathbb{M}$ on the subspace of primary vectors in $V^\natural$ induces an $\mathbb{M}$-action on the set of $\mathfrak{gl}_2$ subalgebras corresponding to a fixed imaginary simple root. We use the generating function for dimensions of subspaces of primary vectors of $V^\natural$ to prove that this action is non-trivial for small values of $j$.

Abstract:We study the symmetries of closed Majorana chains in 1+1d, including the translation, fermion parity, spatial parity, and time-reversal symmetries. The algebra of the symmetry operators is realized projectively on the Hilbert space, signaling anomalies on the lattice, and constraining the long-distance behavior. In the special case of the free Hamiltonian (and small deformations thereof), the continuum limit is the 1+1d free Majorana CFT. Its continuum chiral fermion parity $(-1)^{F_\text{L}}$ emanates from the lattice translation symmetry. We find a lattice precursor of its mod 8 't Hooft anomaly. Using a Jordan-Wigner transformation, we sum over the spin structures of the lattice model (a procedure known as the GSO projection), while carefully tracking the global symmetries. In the resulting bosonic model of Ising spins, the Majorana translation operator leads to a non-invertible lattice translation symmetry at the critical point. The non-invertible Kramers-Wannier duality operator of the continuum Ising CFT emanates from this non-invertible lattice translation of the transverse-field Ising model.

Explicit construction of the maximal subgroups of the Monster

Abstract:Seysen's Python package mmgroup provides functionality for fast computations within the sporadic simple group $\mathbb{M}$, the Monster. The aim of this work is to present an mmgroup database of maximal subgroups of $\mathbb{M}$: for each conjugacy class $C$ of maximal subgroups in $\mathbb{M}$, we construct explicit group elements in mmgroup and prove that these elements generate a group in $C$. Our generators and the computations verifying correctness are available in accompanying code. The maximal subgroups of $\mathbb{M}$ have been classified in a number of papers spanning several decades; our work constitutes an independent verification of these constructions. We also correct the claim that $\mathbb{M}$ has a maximal subgroup $\mathrm{PSL}_2({59})$, and hence identify a new maximal subgroup $59{:}29$.

A fast implementation of the Monster group

Abstract:Let $\mathbb{M}$ be the Monster group, which is the largest sporadic finite simple group, and has first been constructed in 1982 by Griess. In 1985 Conway has constructed a 196884-dimensional rational epresentation $\rho$ of $\mathbb{M}$ with matrix entries in $\mathbb{Z}[\frac{1}{2}]$. We describe a new and very fast algorithm for performing the group operation in $\mathbb{M}$. For an odd integer $p > 1$ let $\rho_p$ be the representation $\rho$ with matrix entries taken modulo $p$. We use a generating set $\Gamma$ of $\mathbb{M}$, such that the operation of a generator in $\Gamma$ on an element of $\rho_p$ can easily be computed. We construct a triple $(v_1, v^+, v^-)$ of elements of the module $\rho_{15}$, such that an unknown $g \in \mathbb{M}$ can be effectively computed as a word in $\Gamma$ from the images $(v_1 g, v^+ g, v^- g)$. Our new algorithm based on this idea multiplies two random elements of $\mathbb{M}$ in less than 30~milliseconds on a standard PC with an Intel i7-8750H CPU at 4 GHz. This is more than 100000 times faster than estimated by Wilson in 2013.

A Lie group analog for the Monster Lie algebra

Abstract:The Monster Lie algebra $\frak m $, which admits an action of the Monster finite simple group $\mathbb{M}$, was introduced by Borcherds as part of his work on the Conway--Norton Monstrous Moonshine conjecture. Here we construct an analog~$G(\frak m)$ of a Lie group or Kac--Moody group, associated to~$\frak m$. The group~$G(\frak m)$ is given by generators and relations, analogous to a construction of a Kac--Moody group given by Tits. In the absence of local nilpotence of the adjoint representation of $\frak m$, we introduce the notion of pro-summability of an infinite sum of operators. We use this to construct a complete pro-unipotent group $\Uhp$ of automorphisms of a completion $\widehat{\mathfrak{m}}=\frak n^-\ \oplus\ \frak h\ \oplus\ \widehat{\frak n}^+$ of~$\mathfrak{m}$, where $\widehat{\frak n}^+$ is the formal product of the positive root spaces of $\frak m$. The elements of $\widehat{U}^+$ are pro-summable infinite series with constant term 1. The group $\widehat{U}^+$ has a subgroup~$\widehat{U}^+_\text{im}$, which is an analog of a complete unipotent group corresponding to the positive imaginary roots of~$\frak m$.We construct analogs $\text{Exp}: \widehat{\mathfrak{n}}^+\to\widehat{U}^+$ and $\text{Ad} :\widehat{U}^+ \to \Aut(\widehat{\frak{n}}^+)$ of the classical exponential map and adjoint representation. We show that the action of $\mathbb{M}$ on $\mathfrak m$ induces an action of~$\mathbb{M}$ on~$\widehat{\frak m}$, and that this in turn induces an action of $\mathbb{M}$ on~$\widehat{U}^+$. We also show that the action of $\mathbb{M}$ on $\widehat{\mathfrak n}^+$ is compatible with the action of $\widehat{U}^+$ on $\widehat{\mathfrak n}^+$.

Finally, to demonstrate our theory, we give some examples that indeed show laconic and symmetric patterns on the Bloch sphere, and unveil the properties of the high-spin system by analyzing the trajectories of the Majorana stars on a Bloch sphere.

Abstract:We provide the basic setup for the project, initiated by Felix Rehren, aiming at classifying all 2-generated axial algebras of Monster type $(\alpha,\beta)$ over a field $\mathbb F$. Using this, we first show that every such algebra has dimension at most 8, except for the case $(\alpha,\beta)=(2,\tfrac{1}{2})$, where the Highwater algebra provides examples of dimension $n$, for all $n\in {\mathbb N}\cup \{\infty\}$. We then classify all 2-generated axial algebras of Monster type $(\alpha,\beta)$ over ${\mathbb Q}(\alpha,\beta)$, for $\alpha$ and $\beta$ algebraically independent over $\mathbb Q$. Finally, we generalise the Norton-Sakuma Theorem to every primitive $2$-generated axial algebra of Monster type $(\frac{1}{4},\frac{1}{32})$ over a field of characteristic zero, dropping the hypothesis on the existence of a Frobenius form.

Abstract:Allcock constructed a 13-dimensional complex ball quotient of which he conjectured that it admits a natural covering with covering group isomorphic to the Bimonster. This ball quotient contains the moduli space of cubic threefolds as an open dense subset of a 10-dimensional complex subball quotient. We prove that this subball quotient has a neighborhood in the Allcock ball quotient over which the conjectured cover exists.

Abstract:We discuss some categorical aspects of the objects that appear in the construction of the Monster and other sporadic simple groups. We define the basic representation of the categorical torus $\mathcal T$ classified by an even symmetric bilinear form $I$ and of the semi-direct product of $\mathcal T$ with its canonical involution. We compute the centraliser of the basic representation of $\mathcal T\rtimes\{\pm1\}$ and find it to be a categorical extension of the extraspecial $2$-group with commutator $I\mod 2$. We study the inertia groupoid of a categorical torus and find that it is given by the torsor of the topological Looijenga line bundle, so that $2$-class functions on $\mathcal T$ are canonically theta-functions. We discuss how discontinuity of the categorical character in our formalism means that the character of the basic representation fails to be a categorical class function. We compute the automorphisms of $\mathcal T$ and of $\mathcal T\rtimes\{\pm1\}$ and relate these to the Conway groups.
