Abstract:I study embeddings of alternating group of rank five into the Cremona group of rank three. I find all embeddings induced by A_5-del Pezzo fibrations and I study their conjugacy. As an application, I show that there is a series of continuous families of pairwise non-conjugate embeddings of alternating group of rank five into Cr$_3(\mathbb{C})$.

Birational maps of Severi-Brauer surfaces, with applications to Cremona groups of higher rank

Abstract:We prove that any group of cardinality at most the one of $\mathbb{C}$ is a quotient of any Cremona group of rank at least $4$. This provides a definitive answer to the question of what the quotients of Cremona groups can be. As a consequence, this gives a negative answer to the question of I. Dolgachev of whether Cremona groups of all ranks are generated by involutions. As another application, we show that higher Cremona groups do not enjoy some classical group-theoretic properties (namely, the Hopfian property) which are satisfied by Cremona groups of rank $2$. Finally, we discover that the $3$-torsion of the Cremona group of rank at least $4$ is not countable. To deduce these properties of higher Cremona groups, we first describe the group of birational transformations of a non-trivial Severi-Brauer surface $S$ over a perfect field, proving in particular that if $S$ contains a point of degree $6$, then its group of birational self-maps is not generated by elements of finite order as it admits a surjective group homomorphism to~$\mathbb{Z}$. We then use this result to study Mori fibre spaces over the field of complex numbers, for which the generic fibre is a non-trivial Severi-Brauer surface.

Abstract:We show that for any $n\geq5$ there exist connected algebraic subgroups in the Cremona group $\mathrm{Bir}(\mathbb{P}^n)$ that are not contained in any maximal connected algebraic subgroup. Our approach exploits the existence of stably rational, non-rational threefolds.

Abstract:We explore birational geometry of matroids by investigating automorphisms of their coarse Bergman fans. Combinatorial Cremona maps provide such automorphisms of Bergman fans which are not induced by matroid automorphisms. We investigate the structure of matroids allowing combinatorial Cremona maps and prove a realizability criterion in the presence of two different Cremonas. We also prove that for all matroids associated to Coxeter arrangements the group of coarse automorphisms of the Bergman fan is generated by the matroid automorphisms and at most one combinatorial Cremona map.

Abstract:We study irreducible surfaces of degree d in $\mathbb{P}^3$ that contain a line of multiplicity d-1 (monoidal surfaces) or d-2 (submonoidal surfaces). We relate them to congruences of lines and Cremona transformations. Many of our results are not new and can be found in the classical literature, we give them modern proofs. In the last section, we extend some of our results to hypersurfaces of arbitrary dimension. We define two commuting Cremona involutions in the ambient space associated to a linear subspace of multiplicity d-2 contained in the hypersurface. Both leave the hypersurface invariant, but one acts as the identity on the hypersurface.

Abstract:Monomorphism categories of the symmetric and alternating groups are studied via Cayley’s Em-bedding Theorem. It is shown that the parity is well defined in such categories. As an application, the parity in a finite group G is classified. It is proved that any element in a group of odd order is always even and such a group can be embedded into some alternating group instead of some symmetric group in the Cayley’s theorem. It is also proved that the parity in an abelian group of even order is always balanced and the parity in an nonabelian group is independent of its order.

Any two additive actions on X are conjugate by a birational automorphism of X . Abstract:Schur--Weyl--Jones duality establishes the connection between the commuting actions of the symmetric group $S_{n}$ and the partition algebra $P_{k}(n)$ on the tensor space $\left(\mathbb{C}^n\right)^{\otimes k}.$ We give a refinement of this, determining a subspace of $\left(\mathbb{C}^n\right)^{\otimes k}$ on which we have a version of Schur--Weyl duality for the symmetric groups $S_{n}$ and $S_{k}.$ We use this refinement to construct subspaces of $\left(\mathbb{C}^n\right)^{\otimes k}$ that are isomorphic to certain irreducible representations of $S_{n}\times S_{k}.$ We then use the Weingarten calculus for the symmetric group to obtain an explicit formula for the orthogonal projection from $\left(\mathbb{C}^n\right)^{\otimes k}$ to each subspace.

Abstract:A regular map is an abstract generalization of a Platonic solid. It describes a group, a topological cell decomposition of a 2-manifold of type {p, q} with only p-gons, such that q of them meet at each vertex in a circular manner, and we have maximal combinatorial symmetry, expressed by the flag transitivity of the symmetry group. On the one hand, we have articles on topological surface embeddings of regular maps by F. Razafindrazaka and K. Polthier, C. Séquin, and J. J. van Wijk.On the other hand, we have articles with polyhedral embeddings of regular maps by J. Bokowski and M. Cuntz, A. Boole Stott, U. Brehm, H. S. M. Coxeter, B. Grünbaum, E. Schulte, and J. M. Wills. The main concern of this partial survey article is to emphasize that all these articles should be seen as contributing to the common body of knowledge in the area of regular map embeddings. This article additionally provides a method for finding symmetrical equivelar polyhedral embeddings of type {3, 7} based on symmetrical graph embeddings on convex surfaces.

Abstract:The symmetries of surfaces which can be embedded into the symmetries of the 3-dimensional Euclidean space ℝ3 are easier to feel by human’s intuition. We give the maximum order of finite group actions on (ℝ3, Σ) among all possible embedded closed/bordered surfaces with given geometric/algebraic genus greater than 1 in ℝ3. We also identify the topological types of the bordered surfaces realizing the maximum order, and find simple representative embeddings for such surfaces.
