Abstract:Quantization of the electromagnetic field (called quantum electromagnetics here) has been a fascinating and important subject since its introduction by Dirac in 1927. However, this knowledge is often inaccessible to technologists such as engineers. This subject will be discussed in its simplest terms so that it can be easily understood by a larger community of researchers. To this end, a new way of motivating Hamiltonian mechanics is presented. Furthermore, a novel way of deriving the quantum equations of motion for electromagnetics and Maxwell's equations is presented.

Abstract:The QCDSP machines were designed for lattice gauge calculations. For planning it is crucial to explore this architecture for other computationally intensive tasks. Here I describe an implementation of a simple message passing scheme. With the objective being simplicity, I introduce a small number of generic functions for manipulating a large data set spread over the machine. I test the scheme on three applications: a fast Fourier transform, arbitrary dimension SU(N) pure lattice gauge theory, and the manipulation of Fermionic Fock states through a distributed hash table. These routines compile both on QCDSP and a Unix workstation.

Abstract:Maxwell’s mature presentation of his equations emphasized the unity of electromagnetism and mechanics, subsuming both as ‘dynamical systems’. That intuition of unity has proved both fruitful, as a source of pregnant concepts, and broadly inspiring. A deep aspect of Maxwell’s work is its use of redundant potentials, and the associated requirement of gauge symmetry. Those concepts have become central to our present understanding of fundamental physics, but they can appear to be rather formal and esoteric. Here I discuss two things: the physical significance of gauge invariance, in broad terms; and some tantalizing prospects for further unification, building on that concept, that are visible on the horizon today. If those prospects are realized, Maxwell’s vision of the unity of field and substance will be brought to a new level. This article is part of the themed issue ‘Unifying physics and technology in light of Maxwell's equations’.

Abstract:We show that gravitational mass and inertial mass are correlated by an adimentional factor, which in specific electromagnetic conditions, can be reduced, nullified, negated, and increased. Some theoretical consequences of the mentioned correlation are: the generalization of Newton=92s second law for the motion (New law for Inertia); the deduction of the differential equation for entropy (second law of Thermodynamics); unification of gravitational and electromagnetic interactions .

Abstract:In this paper we present a new unified theory of electromagnetic and gravitational interactions. By considering a four-dimensional spacetime as a hypersurface embedded in a five-dimensional bulk spacetime, we derive the complete set of field equations in the four-dimensional spacetime from the fivedimensional Einstein field equation. Besides the Einstein field equation in the four-dimensional spacetime, an electromagnetic field equation is obtained: ∇ a F ab - ξ R b a A a = -4π J b with ξ = -2, where F ab is the antisymmetric electromagnetic field tensor defined by the potential vector A a , R ab is the Ricci curvature tensor of the hypersurface, and J a is the electric current density vector. The electromagnetic field equation differs from the Einstein–Maxwell equation by a curvature-coupled term ξ R b a A a , whose presence addresses the problem of incompatibility of the Einstein–Maxwell equation with a universe containing a uniformly distributed net charge, as discussed in a previous paper by the author [L.-X. Li, Gen. Relativ. Gravit. 48, 28 (2016)]. Hence, the new unified theory is physically different from Kaluza–Klein theory and its variants in which the Einstein–Maxwell equation is derived. In the four-dimensional Einstein field equation derived in the new theory, the source term includes the stress-energy tensor of electromagnetic fields as well as the stress-energy tensor of other unidentified matter. Under certain conditions the unidentified matter can be interpreted as a cosmological constant in the four-dimensional spacetime. We argue that, the electromagnetic field equation and hence the unified theory presented in this paper can be tested in an environment with a high mass density, e.g., inside a neutron star or a white dwarf, and in the early epoch of the universe.

Abstract:It is commonly anticipated that gravity is subjected to the standard principles of quantum mechanics. Yet some — including Einstein — have questioned that presumption, whose empirical basis is weak. Indeed, recently Dyson has emphasized that no conventional experiment is capable of detecting individual gravitons. However, as we describe, if inflation occurred, the universe, by acting as an ideal graviton amplifier, affords such access. It produces a classical signal, in the form of macroscopic gravitational waves, in response to spontaneous (not induced) emission of gravitons. Thus recent BICEP2 observations of polarization in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) will, if confirmed, provide firm empirical evidence for the quantization of gravity. Their details also support quantitative ideas concerning the unification of strong, electromagnetic and weak forces, and of all these with gravity.
Maxwell-Dirac isomorphism revisited: from foundations of quantum mechanics to geometrodynamics and cosmology

Abstract:Although electrons (fermions) and photons(bosons) produce the same interference patterns in the two-slit experiments, the description of these patterns is markedly different. Photons are spin one, relativistic and massless while electrons are spin 1/2 massive particles producing the same interference patterns. In spite of these differences, already in early 30ies of 20ieth century the isomorphism between the source-free Maxwell and Dirac equations was established. It permitted us to replace Born probabilistic interpretation of quantum mechanics with the optical. In 1925 Rainich combined source-free Maxwell equations with Einstein's equations for gravity. His results were rediscovered by Misner and Wheeler in their "geometrodynamics". Absence of sources in it remained a problem until Ranada's work. His results required the existence of null electromagnetic fields absent in geometrodynamics. They were added later on by Geroch. Ranada's solutions of source-free Maxwell's equations came out as knots and links. In this work new proof of knotty nature of the electron is established. The obtained result perfectly blends with the descripion of rotating and charged black hole.

A quaternionic unification of electromagnetism and hydrodynamics

Abstract:We have derived energy conservation equations from the quaternionic Newton's law that is compatible with Lorentz transformation. This Newton's law yields directly the Euler equation and other equations governing the fluid motion. With this formalism, the pressure contributes positively to the dynamics of the system in the same way mass does. Hydrodynamic equations are derived from Maxwell's equations by adopting an electromagnetohydrodynamics (EMH) analogy. In this analogy the hydroelectric field is related to the local acceleration of the fluid and the Lorentz gauge is related to the incompressible fluid condition. An analogous Lorentz gauge in hydrodynamics is proposed. We have shown that the vorticity of the fluid is developed whenever the particle local acceleration of the fluid deviates from the velocity direction. We have also shown that Lorentz force in electromagnetism corresponds to Euler force in fluids. Moreover, we have obtained Gauss's, Faraday's and Ampere's -like laws in Hydrodynamics.

Abstract:Adopting Schwinger's formalism for inferring Maxwell-Lorentz equations (MLEs) and combining three ingredients: (i) the laws of gravitostatics, (ii) the Galileo-Newton principle of relativity and (iii) existence of gravitational waves which travel in vacuum with a finite speed $c_g$, we inferred two sets of gravito-Maxwell-Lorentz Equations (g-MLEs). One of these sets corresponds to Heaviside's Gravity of 1893 and the other set corresponds to what we call Maxwellian Gravity (MG). HG and MG are mere two mathematical representations of a single physical theory called Heaviside-Maxwellian Gravity (HMG). While rediscovering Heaviside's gravitational field equations following Schwinger's formalism, we found a correction to Heaviside's speculative gravito-Lorentz force law. This work presents a Galilo-Newtonian foundation of gravitomagnetic effects and gravitational waves, caused by time-varying sources and fields, which are currently considered outside the domain of Newtonian physics. The emergence HMG from other well-established principles of physics is also noted, which established its theoretical consistency and fixed the value of $c_g$ uniquely at the speed of light in vacuum. The explanations of certain experimentally verified general relativistic results within HMG are also noted. We also report, a set of new Maxwell-Lorentz Equations, physically equivalent to the standard set, as a byproduct product of the present approach.
Electromagnetic Quantum Gravity: On the Quantum Principle of Equivalence, Quantum Inertia, and the Meaning of Mass

Abstract:A new approach to Quantum Gravity is proposed that is manifestly compatible with Cellular Automata (CA) theory, and is based on a new quantum theory of inertia where Newtonian Inertia results from the electromagnetic forces between the (electrically) charged elementary particles of an accelerated mass and the surrounding (electrically) charged virtual particles of the quantum vacuum. At the Plank scale, there exists a quantized, absolute 3D space and separate (quantized) time which is not affected by motion or gravity. Light is the simple shifting of a photon information pattern from cell to adjacent cell at every CA 'clock cycle'. The Lorentz transformation is derived from our simple model of light motion. Inertial mass is revised to acknowledge the absolute nature of mass and acceleration. The same electromagnetic quantum vacuum forces are also present in masses inside a gravitational field, where now the quantum vacuum is accelerated with respect to the mass by graviton exchanges. This process is responsible for the equivalence principle (WEP), which is derived in detail. Gravity is found to be based on two boson force exchange particles: the graviton and the photon, and both particles are postulated to be almost identical in physical characteristics. 4D space-time curvature is found to result from a 'Fizeau-like' scattering process, where the accelerated (electrically charged) virtual particles of the quantum vacuum act like a special 'Fizeau fluid'. Light scatters with the electrically charged and accelerated 'Fizeau fluid', resulting in curved paths. Four experimental tests of EMQG are proposed.

Abstract:We revisit the relativistic coupling between gravity and electromagnetism, putting particularly into question the status of the latter; whether it behaves as a source or as a form of gravity on large scales. Considering a metric-affine framework and a simple action principle, we find out that a component of gravity, the so-called homothetic curvature field, satisfies both sets of Maxwell equations. Therefore, we arrive at a gravito-electromagnetic equivalence analogous to the mass-energy equivalence. We raise and discuss some crucial questions implied by the aforementioned finding, refreshing our viewpoint of electromagnetism in curved spacetime.

Abstract:In the Born, Infeld, Bopp, Podolsky and Dirac theories the electron mass is finite (or zero), but gravity effects have not been considered. Shirokov and Fisher showed that in studying of origin of elemental particle masses we can not neglect these effects. Gravity field plays an essential role in interpretation of particle mass. It has been shown that for point-like charge the general solution of gravity and electromagnetic (EM) equations that contains arbitrary function $\mu(r)$, can in special case of this function, describe gravity and EM fields that do not have singularities in full range of $r$ from $0$ to $\infty$. In this paper we are trying to find more general solution.

Abstract:We take the Christoffel coefficients as an operator and introduce new mappings for quaternionic products to reach the theory of electrodynamics in general spacetime. With the help of the directional operator of the covariant derivative, we generalize the quaternioic mechanism to the theory of gravity and show that the Einstein equation has the freedom to choose the constant term in agreement with the covariant derivative.

Abstract:We reexamine and further develop different gravito-electromagnetic (GEM) analogies found in the literature, and clarify the connection between them. Special emphasis is placed in two exact physical analogies: the analogy based on inertial fields from the so-called "1+3 formalism", and the analogy based on tidal tensors. Both are reformulated, extended and generalized. We write in both formalisms the Maxwell and the full exact Einstein field equations with sources, plus the algebraic Bianchi identities, which are cast as the source-free equations for the gravitational field. New results within each approach are unveiled. The well known analogy between linearized gravity and electromagnetism in Lorentz frames is obtained as a limiting case of the exact ones. The formal analogies between the Maxwell and Weyl tensors are also discussed, and, together with insight from the other approaches, used to physically interpret gravitational radiation. The precise conditions under which a similarity between gravity and electromagnetism occurs are discussed, and we conclude by summarizing the main outcome of each approach.

Abstract:The reports in this monograph have shown great enthusiasm and exuberance for the unification of various interactions through the concept of gauge fields. I would like to emphasize a point that has not yet been explicitly stated by any of the other authors: gauge fields are deeply related to some profoundly beautiful ideas of contemporary mathematics, ideas that are the driving forces of part of the mathematics of the last 40 years. Recalling the relationship between physics and mathematics in earlier periods, general relativity and Riemannian geometry, quantum mechanics and Hilbert space, it is all too obvious that physicists may again be zeroing in on a fundamental new secret of nature.
