Abstract:In a recent Letter [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1205.0096" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1205.0096">arXiv:1205.0096</a>], Mansuripur considers a magnetic dipole positioned at a fixed location from a point charge. Performing a Lorentz transformation to a laboratory frame where the charge distribution moves he finds that `a net torque acts on the dipole pair'. He then argues that `this torque in the (lab) frame in the absence of a corresponding torque in the (rest) frame is sufficient proof of the inadequacy of the Lorentz (force) law'. In this comment we demonstrate that the presence of a torque is not incompatible with special relativity: it is required by the conservation laws that apply to the total momentum of the system (including the particles). We furthermore stress that classical electrodynamics needs a consistent dynamical description of the particles that involves coupled equations for the electromagnetic fields and the trajectories [M. Brachet and E. Tirapegui, Nuovo Cimento Soc. Ital. Fis. A 47, 210 (1978)] and any conserved quantity will then contain contributions from both the field and the particles.

Abstract:This article contains a digest of the theory of electromagnetism and a review of the transformation between inertial frames, especially under low speed limits. The covariant nature of the Maxwell's equations is explained using the conventional language. We show that even under low speed limits, the relativistic effects should not be neglected to get a self-consistent theory of the electromagnetic fields, unless the intrinsic dynamics of these fields has been omitted completely. The quasi-static limits, where the relativistic effects can be partly neglected are also reviewed, to clarify some common misunderstandings and imprecise use of the theory in presence of moving media and other related situations. The discussions presented in this paper provide a clear view of why classical electromagnetic theory is relativistic in its essence.

Abstract:Cavalleri et al. [Phys. Rev. E 52, 2505 (1998); Eur. J. Phys. 17, 205 (1996)] have attempted to resolve the electrodynamic force law controversy. This attempt to prove the validity of either the Ampère or Lorentz force law by theory and experiment has revealed only that the two are equivalent when predicting the force on part of a circuit due to the current in the complete circuit. However, in our analysis of internal stresses, only Ampère's force law agrees with experiment.

Abstract:In this paper, we aim to resolve two fundamental issues in the dynamics of relativity: (i) Under what condition, the time-column space integrals of a Lorentz four-tensor constitute a Lorentz four-vector, and (ii) under what condition, the time-element space integral of a Lorentz four-vector is a Lorentz scalar; namely two "conservation laws", which are mispresented in traditional textbooks, and widely used in fundamental research, such as relativistic analysis of the momentum of light in a medium, and the proofs of the positive mass theorem in general relativity. To resolve issue (i), we have developed a generalized Lorentz \emph{four-vector} theorem based on the principles of classical mathematical analysis, with a simplified analytic example given to illustrate how to transform a space integral from one inertial frame to another, and a strict mathematical derivation provided to confirm the effect of Lorentz contraction. We use this four-vector theorem to verify M{\o}ller's theorem, and surprisingly find that M{\o}ller's theorem is fundamentally wrong. We provide a corrected version of M{\o}ller's theorem. We also use this four-vector theorem to analyze a plane light wave in a moving uniform medium, and find that the momentum and energy of Minkowski quasi-photon constitute a Lorentz four-vector and Planck constant is a Lorentz invariant. To resolve issue (ii), we have developed a generalized Lorentz \emph{scalar} theorem. We use this theorem to verify the "invariant conservation law" in relativistic electrodynamics, and unexpectedly find that it is also fundamentally wrong. Thus the two "conservation laws" in traditional textbooks, which have magically attracted several generations of most outstanding scientists, turned out to be imaginary, just like the emperor's new clothes; creating a scientific myth in the modern theoretical and mathematical physics: Believing is seeing.

Abstract: Recently published paper [PRL 114, 147701 (2015)] contains several misleading statements and misinterpretations of known facts. The main massage of the paper [PRL 114, 147701 (2015)] is as follows: "We have shown that explicit symmetry breaking in the structural configuration of charges leads to symmetry breaking of the electric field which results in electromagnetic radiation due to non-conservative current within a localized region of space and time" seems to transcend mere empiricism, touching the theoretical foundations of electromagnetism. Moreover, basic mistakes are numerous in this article and its main claim is wrong. Below we prove it citing the paper and arguing against it.

Abstract:What would the universe be like if we would give up the principle of equivalence and as a consequence incorporate gravity on a more traditional interaction basis within the theory of special relativity? The current work proposes such a gravitational model where a new law of gravitation is expressed in a Lorentz invariant form and is simultaneously in great agreement with many observations (including general relativity). We find the following predictions so far to be consistent with observations: (1) precession formulas explaining, for example, the Mercury apsidal precession, (2) gravitational bending of light near the limb of a massive object, (3) gravitational redshift, (4) escape velocity near a black hole, (5) several relativistic orbit details are derived in the strong field regime and found to be consistent with GR and also the observed shadow of the M87 black hole. Curved space effects such as gravitational time dilation or Shapiro delay cannot be explained within the realms of special relativity (Sect. 3.11).

Abstract:In this article, we present several apparent paradoxes of special relativity and their respective solutions. These paradoxes have appeared since the advent of relativity in 1905, and in fact they are never paradoxes. From a didactic point of view, paradoxes are an excellent learning tool. They lead the student to confront, and abandon, several central concepts of Galilean theory, such as simultaneity and rigidity of extended bodies. In particular, we review a new and simple solution to the twin paradox, recently found by one of the present authors [1]. It does not need to consider reference accelerators or light signals, which are the solutions presented in the literature.

Abstract:Precision measurements of the inverse-square law via experiments on short-range gravity provide sensitive tests of Lorentz symmetry. A combined analysis of data from experiments at the Huazhong University of Science and Technology and Indiana University sets simultaneous limits on all 22 coefficients for Lorentz violation correcting the Newton force law as the inverse sixth power of distance. Results are consistent with no effect at the level of 10^{-12} m^{4}.

Abstract:Lorentz invariance is one of the foundations of modern physics; however, Lorentz violation may happen from the perspective of quantum gravity, and plenty of studies on Lorentz violation have arisen in recent years. As a good tool to explore Lorentz violation, Finsler geometry is a natural and fundamental generalization of Riemann geometry. The Finsler structure depends on both coordinates and velocities. Here, we simply introduce the mathematics of Finsler geometry. We review the connection between modified dispersion relations and Finsler geometries and discuss the physical influence from Finsler geometry. We review the connection between Finsler geometries and theories of Lorentz violation, such as the doubly special relativity, the standard-model extension, and the very special relativity.

Abstract:A well-known prediction of the Lorentz transformation (LT) of Einstein’s theory of Special Relativity (SR) is that when two observers exchange light signals, they will both measure a red shift (lowering in frequency). An experiment with gamma rays was reported by Hay et al., in 1960 in which an absorber is mounted at the rim of a high- speed centrifuge while the source is located near the rotor axis. There is general agreement that because of its acceleration, the clock attached to the absorber must be retarded relative to the gamma ray source. Despite the claim that this result is a confirmation of the Symmetry Principle, the fact remains that the slowing down of the absorber clock means that the frequency of the signals it receives from the source will be greater than the standard value, i.e. a blue shift will be observed because more waves are counted per second by virtue of the absorber clock’s reduced rate. This experience therefore stands in direct contradiction of the Symmetry Principle. In addition, it is pointed out that the three space-time predictions of the LT (equal speeds of light, time dilation and FitzGerald length contraction) are incompatible with one another. An alternate theory is presented (Uniform Scaling method) which is in full agreement with the results of the ultra-centrifuge experiment and also avoids any incompatibility with regard to it space-time predictions.
