Abstract:Misinterpretation in the preceding Comment of my recent analysis of the past of a photon is corrected. There is nothing in this analysis which is "contrary to the usual quantum expectations" but, nevertheless, it does provide "further understanding and interpretation of the system considered". In particular, it teaches us that the naive common sense argument frequently used in the literature including the Comment has to be abandoned.

Abstract:A number of arguments at the interplay of general relativity and quantum theory suggest an operational limit to spatial resolution, conventionally modeled as a generalized uncertainty principle (GUP). Recently, it has been demonstrated that the dynamics postulated as a part of these models are only loosely related to the existence of the minimal-length scale. In this paper, we intend to make a more informed choice on the Hamiltonian by demanding, among other properties, that the model be invariant under (possibly) deformed Galilean transformations in one dimension. In this vein, we study a two-particle system with general interaction potential under the condition that the addition of two wave numbers as well as the action of Galilean boosts on wave numbers be nonlinearly deformed so as to comply with the cutoff. We find that the customary GUP Hamiltonian does not allow for invariance under (any kind of) generalized Galilean transformations. Those Hamiltonians which allow for a deformed relativity principle have to be related to the ordinary Galilean ones by virtue of a momentum-space diffeomorphism, i.e., a canonical transformation. Abstract:This paper completes and comments on some aspects of our previous publications. In ref [1], we have derived a set of space-time transformations referred to as the extended space-time transformations. These transformations, which assume the existence of a preferred aether frame and the variability of the one-way speed of light in the other frames, are compared to the Lorentz-Poincare transformations. We demonstrate that the extended transformations can be converted into a set of equations that have a similar mathematical form to the Lorentz-Poincare transformations, but which differ from them in that they connect reference frames whose co-ordinates are altered by the systematic unavoidable measurement distortions due to length contraction and clock retardation and by the usual synchronization procedures, a fact that the conventional approaches of relativity do not show. As a result, we confirm that the relativity principle is not a fundamental principle of physics [i.e, it does not rigorously apply in the physical world when the true co-ordinates are used]. It is contingent but seems to apply provided that the distorted coordinates are used. The apparent invariance of the speed of light also results from the measurement distortions. The space-time transformations relating experimental data, therefore, conceal hidden variables which deserved to be disclosed for a deeper understanding of physics.

Abstract:Besides two fundamental postulates, (i) the principle of relativity and (ii) the constancy of the speed of light in all inertial frames of reference, the special theory of relativity uses another assumption. This other assumption concerns the Euclidean structure of gravity-free space and the homogeneity of gravity-free time in the usual inertial coordinate system. Introducing the primed inertial coordinate system, in addition to the usual inertial coordinate system, for each inertial frame of reference, we assume the Euclidean structures of gravity-free space and time in the primed inertial coordinate system and their generalized Finslerian structures in the usual inertial coordinate system. We combine the alternative assumption with the two postulates (i) and (ii) to modify the special theory of relativity. The modified special relativity theory involves two versions of the light speed, infinite c′ in the primed inertial coordinate system and finite c in the usual inertial coordinate system. It also involves the c′-type Galilean transformation between any two primed inertial coordinate systems and the localized Lorentz transformation between two corresponding usual inertial coordinate systems. Since all our experimental data are collected and expressed in the usual inertial coordinate system, the physical principle is: the c′-type Galilean invariance in the primed inertial coordinate system plus the transformation from the primed inertial coordinate system to the usual inertial coordinate system. This principle is applied to a reformulation of mechanics, field theory and quantum field theory. Relativistic mechanics in the usual inertial coordinate system is unchanged, while field theory is developed and divergence-free. Any c′-type Galilean-invariant field system can be quantized by using the canonical quantization method in the primed inertial coordinate system. We establish a transformation law for quantized field systems as they are transformed from the primed to the usual inertial coordinate system. It is shown that the modified special relativity theory, together with quantum mechanics, leads to a convergent and invariant quantum field theory, in full agreement with experimental facts. The formulation of this quantum field theory does not demand departures from the concepts such as local Lorentz invariance in the usual inertial coordinate system, locality of interactions, and local or global gauge symmetries.

Abstract:We present a formalism of Galilean quantum mechanics in non-inertial reference frames and discuss its implications for the equivalence principle. This extension of quantum mechanics rests on the Galilean line group, the semidirect product of the real line and the group of analytic functions from the real line to the Euclidean group in three dimensions. This group provides transformations between all inertial and non-inertial reference frames and contains the Galilei group as a subgroup. We construct a certain class of unitary representations of the Galilean line group and show that these representations determine the structure of quantum mechanics in non-inertial reference frames. Our representations of the Galilean line group contain the usual unitary projective representations of the Galilei group, but have a more intricate cocycle structure. The transformation formula for the Hamiltonian under the Galilean line group shows that in a non-inertial reference frame it acquires a fictitious potential energy term that is proportional to the inertial mass, suggesting the equivalence of inertial mass and gravitational mass in quantum mechanics.

Abstract:The quantum description of reality is quite different from the classical one. Understanding this difference at a fundamental level is still an interesting topic. Recently, Dragan and Ekert [New J. Phys. 22 (2020) 033038] postulated that considering so-called superluminal observers can be useful in this context. In particular, they claim that the full mathematical structure of the generalized Lorentz transformation may imply the emergence of multiple quantum mechanical trajectories. On the contrary, here we show that the generalized Lorentz transformation, when used in a consistent way, does not provide any correspondence between the classical concept of a definite path and the multiple paths of quantum mechanics.

Abstract:Recent experimental results on slow light heighten interest in nonlinear Maxwell theories. We obtain Galilei covariant equations for electromagnetism by allowing special nonlinearities in the constitutive equations only, keeping Maxwell's equations unchanged. Combining these with linear or nonlinear Schroedinger equations, e.g. as proposed by Doebner and Goldin, yields a Galilean quantum electrodynamics.

Abstract:The recent criticism of Vaidman's propsal for the analysis of the past of a particle in the nested interferometer is refuted. It is shown that the definition of the past of the particle adopted by Englert et al. [Phys. Rev. A 96, 022126 (2017)] is applicable only to a tiny fraction of photons in the interferometer which indeed exhibit different behaviour. Their proof that all pre- and postselected particles behave this way, i.e. follow a continuous trajectory, does not hold, because it relies on the assumption that it is intended to prove.

Abstract:After a review of the existing theory of non-inertial frames and mathematical observers in Minkowski space-time we give the explicit expression of a family of such frames obtained from the inertial ones by means of point-dependent Lorentz transformations as suggested by the locality principle. These non-inertial frames have non-Euclidean 3-spaces and contain the differentially rotating ones in Euclidean 3-spaces as a subcase. Then we discuss how to replace mathematical accelerated observers with dynamical ones (their world-lines belong to interacting particles in an isolated system) and how to define Unruh–DeWitt detectors without using mathematical Rindler uniformly accelerated observers. Also some comments are done on the transition from relativistic classical mechanics to relativistic quantum mechanics in non-inertial frames.

General Formalism of the Quantum Equivalence Principle

Abstract:A consistent theory of quantum gravity will require a fully quantum formulation of the classical equivalence principle. Such a formulation has been recently proposed in terms of the equality of the rest, inertial and gravitational mass operators, and for non-relativistic particles in a weak gravitational field. In this work, we propose a generalization to a fully relativistic formalism of the quantum equivalence principle, valid for all background space-times, as well as for massive bosons and fermions. The principle is trivially satisfied for massless particles. We show that if the equivalence principle is broken at the quantum level, it implies the modification of the standard Lorentz transformations in flat space-time and a corresponding modification of the metric in curved space-time by the different mass ratios. In other words, the observed geometry would effectively depend on the properties of the test particle. Testable predictions of potential violations of the quantum equivalence principle are proposed.

Abstract:Though many experiments appear to have confirmed the light speed invariance postulate of special relativity theory, this postulate is actually unverified. This paper resolves this issue by first showing the manner in which an illusion of light speed invariance occurs in two-way light speed measurement in the framework of a semi-classical absolute space theory. It then demonstrates a measurable variation of the one-way speed of light, which directly invalidates the invariance postulate and confirms the existence of the preferred reference frame of the absolute space theory.

Abstract:A well-known prediction of the Lorentz transformation (LT) of Einstein’s theory of Special Relativity (SR) is that when two observers exchange light signals, they will both measure a red shift (lowering in frequency). An experiment with gamma rays was reported by Hay et al., in 1960 in which an absorber is mounted at the rim of a high- speed centrifuge while the source is located near the rotor axis. There is general agreement that because of its acceleration, the clock attached to the absorber must be retarded relative to the gamma ray source. Despite the claim that this result is a confirmation of the Symmetry Principle, the fact remains that the slowing down of the absorber clock means that the frequency of the signals it receives from the source will be greater than the standard value, i.e. a blue shift will be observed because more waves are counted per second by virtue of the absorber clock’s reduced rate. This experience therefore stands in direct contradiction of the Symmetry Principle. In addition, it is pointed out that the three space-time predictions of the LT (equal speeds of light, time dilation and FitzGerald length contraction) are incompatible with one another. An alternate theory is presented (Uniform Scaling method) which is in full agreement with the results of the ultra-centrifuge experiment and also avoids any incompatibility with regard to it space-time predictions.
Gravitational redshift revisited: inertia, geometry, and charge

Abstract:Gravitational redshift effects undoubtedly exist; moreover, the experimental setups which confirm the existence of these effects - the most famous of which being the Pound-Rebka experiment - are well-known. Nonetheless - and perhaps surprisingly - there remains a great deal of confusion in the literature regarding what these experiments really establish. Our goal in the present article is to clarify these issues, in three concrete ways. First, although (i) Brown and Read (2016) are correct to point out that, given their sensitivity, the outcomes of experimental setups such as the original Pound-Rebka configuration can be accounted for using solely the machinery of accelerating frames in special relativity (barring some subtleties due to the Rindler spacetime necessary to model the effects rigorously), nevertheless (ii) an explanation of the results of more sensitive gravitational redshift outcomes does in fact require more. Second, although typically this 'more' is understood as the invocation of spacetime curvature within the framework of general relativity, in light of the so-called 'geometric trinity' of gravitational theories, in fact curvature is not necessary to explain even these results. Thus (a) one can explain the results of these experiments using only the resources of special relativity, and (b) even when one cannot, one need not invoke spacetime curvature. And third: while one might think that the absence of gravitational redshift effects would imply that spacetime is flat, this can be called into question given the possibility of the 'shielding' of gravitational effects by charge. This argument is shown to be valid and both attractive forces as well as redshift effects can be effectively shielded (and even be repulsive or blueshifted) in the charged setting. Thus, it is not the case that the absence of gravitational effects implies a Minkowskian spacetime setting.

Abstract:When a light scalar field with gravitational strength interacts with matter, the weak equivalence principle is in general violated, leading for instance to a violation of the universality of free fall. This has been known and tested for a while. However, recent developments [Minazzoli & Hees, PRD 2016] showed that a novel manifestation of the universality of free fall can appear in some models. Here we discuss this new scenario and expose how we intend to constrain it with INPOP ephemeris.

Weak equivalence principle violation for mixed scalar particles

Abstract:We investigate the non-relativistic limit of the Klein--Gordon equation for mixed scalar particles and show that, in this regime, one unavoidably arrives at redefining the particle's inertial mass. This happens because, in contrast to the case when mixing is absent, the antiparticle sector contribution cannot be neglected for particles with definite flavor. To clearly demonstrate this feature, we adopt the Feshbach--Villars formalism for Klein--Gordon particles. Furthermore, within the same framework, we also demonstrate that, in the presence of a weak gravitational field, the mass parameter that couples to gravity (gravitational mass) does not match the effective inertial mass. This, in turn, implies a violation of the weak equivalence principle. Finally, we prove that the Bargmann's superselection rule, which prohibits oscillating particles on the basis of the Galilean transformation, is incompatible with the non-relativistic limit of the Lorentz transformation and hence does not collide with the results obtained.
