Engineering Failure Analysis
Abstract:This is a specific case of corrosion damage to underground pipelines in the Arabian Gulf region caused by stray current corrosion. The damage occurred in a fire protection piping system connected to a sprinkler system. The investigation revealed that the corrosion surface morphology was localized and had historically occurred in the same location of previously failed pipe sections. Despite previous attempts to correct the problem, the cause remained undetected and undetermined. It was determined that the failure was due to electromagnetic forces generated by the proximity of high AC and DC voltages. Specifically, the stray current corrosion was caused by interference from electrical cables, including a high-voltage cable and a ground discharge from electrical electrodes. To prevent future failures, it was strongly recommended that all existing conduit pipes in the affected section be insulated with double-layer insulating tape, which has high impedance and dielectric properties.
