Abstract:The compactness lemma in programming language theory states that any recursive function can be simulated by a finite unrolling of the function. One important use case it has is in the logical relations proof technique for proving properties of typed programs, such as strong normalization. The relation between recursive functions and their finite counterparts is a special variant of the class of bisimulation relations. However, standard bisimulation proof approaches do not apply to the compactness lemma as properties of the relation vary over execution. As a result, the proof of compactness is often messy because the multiple copies made of the recursive function during execution can be unrolled an inconsistent number of times. We present a new proof technique by indexing the bisimulation relation over the step transitions and utilizing an intermediate "pattern" language to mechanize bookkeeping. This generalization of "pattern stepping bisimulation" obviates the need for contextual approximation within the compactness lemma, and thus extends the compactness lemma to a wider range of programming languages, including those that incorporate control flow effects. We demonstrate this approach by formally verifying the compactness lemma within the Coq theorem prover in the setting of explicit control flow and polymorphism.

Abstract:In recent work, the authors developed a simple method of constructing topological spaces from certain well-behaved partially ordered sets -- those coming from sequences of relations between finite sets. This method associates a given poset with its spectrum, which is a compact T_1 topological space. In this paper, we focus on the case where such finite sets have a graph structure and the relations belong to a given graph category. We relate topological properties of the spectrum to combinatorial properties of the graph categories involved. We then utilise this to exhibit elementary combinatorial constructions of well-known continua as Fraïssé limits of finite graphs in categories with relational morphisms.

Abstract:The compactness phenomenon is one of the featured aspects of structuralism in mathematics. In simple and broad words, a compactness property holds in a structure if a related property is satisfied by sufficiently many substructures of that structure. With this phenomenon and its twin sibling "reflection", modern set theory has settled many mathematical statements left undecided by the conventionally accepted formalism of mathematics, $\rm ZFC$. A broad research program investigates whether a notion of compactness can universe-widely emerge without running into contradictions. These notes are a survey about guessing models whose existence provides intriguing compactness phenomena. Most of the results in the manuscript are well-known. We shall reformulate, generalise and expand some of them. We also present some known applications of guessing models and state some open problems.

Abstract:The given study uses the methods to identify compactifications of semigroups $S\subset L(X),$ which reside in the space $L(X).$ This method generalizes in some sense the deLeeuw-Glicksberg-Theory to a greater class of functions. The approach provides an abstract approach to several notions of almost periodicity, which mainly involving right semitopological semigroups \cite{RuppertLNM}, and the adjoint theory. Moreover, the given setting is refined to the case of bounded $C_0-$semigroups.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of compactifiable classes -- these are classes of metrizable compact spaces that can be up to homeomorphic copies ``disjointly combined'' into one metrizable compact space. This is witnessed by so-called compact composition of the class. Analogously, we consider Polishable classes and Polish compositions. The question of compactifiability or Polishability of a class is related to hyperspaces. Strongly compactifiable and strongly Polishable classes may be characterized by the existence of a corresponding family in the hyperspace of all metrizable compacta. We systematically study the introduced notions -- we give several characterizations, consider preservation under various constructions, and raise several questions.

In the last decade, several of these have been constructed, studied, and successfully applied to problems. Abstract:Conditional preference statements have been used to compactly represent preferences over combinatorial domains. They are at the core of CP-nets and their generalizations, and lexicographic preference trees. Several works have addressed the complexity of some queries (optimization, dominance in particular). We extend in this paper some of these results, and study other queries which have not been addressed so far, like equivalence, and transformations, like conditioning and variable elimination, thereby contributing to a knowledge compilation map for languages based on conditional preference statements. We also study the expressiveness and complexity of queries and transformations for generalized additive utilities.

Abstract:We study the string topology of a closed oriented Riemannian manifold M. We describe a compact moduli space of diagrams, and show how the cellular chain complex of this space gives algebraic operations on the singular chains of the free loop space LM of M. These operations are well-defined on the homology of a quotient of this moduli space, which has the homotopy type of a compactification of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces. In particular, our action of the 0-dimensional homology of the quotient space on the homology of the free loop space of M recovers the Cohen-Godin positive boundary TQFT.

Abstract:Compact representations of objects is a common concept in computer science. Automated planning can be viewed as a case of this concept: a planning instance is a compact implicit representation of a graph and the problem is to find a path (a plan) in this graph. While the graphs themselves are represented compactly as planning instances, the paths are usually represented explicitly as sequences of actions. Some cases are known where the plans always have compact representations, for example, using macros. We show that these results do not extend to the general case, by proving a number of bounds for compact representations of plans under various criteria, like efficient sequential or random access of actions. In addition to this, we show that our results have consequences for what can be gained from reformulating planning into some other problem. As a contrast to this we also prove a number of positive results, demonstrating restricted cases where plans do have useful compact representations, as well as proving that macro plans have favourable access properties. Our results are finally discussed in relation to other relevant contexts.

Several criteria for the existence of a limit point of a sequence of quantum operations w.r.t. the strong convergence are obtained and discussed. Applications in different areas of quantum information theory are described.

Abstract:We first give simplified and corrected accounts of some results in \cite{PiRCP} on compactifications of pseudofinite groups. For instance, we use a classical theorem of Turing \cite{Turing} to give a simplified proof that any definable compactification of a pseudofinite group has an abelian connected component. We then discuss the relationship between Turing's work, the Jordan-Schur Theorem, and a (relatively) more recent result of Kazhdan \cite{Kazh} on approximate homomorphisms, and we use this to widen our scope from finite groups to amenable groups. In particular, we develop a suitable continuous logic framework for dealing with definable homomorphisms from pseudo-amenable groups to compact Lie groups. Together with the stabilizer theorems of \cite{HruAG,MOS}, we obtain a uniform (but non-quantitative) analogue of Bogolyubov's Lemma for sets of positive measure in discrete amenable groups. We conclude with brief remarks on the case of amenable topological groups.
