Abstract:In this thesis we study string compactifications on manifolds equipped with a $G$-structure, placing a special emphasis on the interplay between geometry and physics. We follow two complementary approaches. In the first part of the thesis we adopt a sigma model perspective and focus on the worldsheet superconformal field theory. We consider compactifications on 7-dimensional Extra Twisted Connected Sum (ETCS) G$_2$ manifolds as well as 8-dimensional Generalized Connected Sum (GCS) Spin(7) manifolds. We find that the geometric construction is reproduced in the worldsheet algebra via a diamond of algebra inclusions. In the second part of the thesis we change gears and consider string compactifications from a supergravity point of view. In particular, we focus on compactifications of the heterotic string down to three spacetime dimensions preserving minimal supersymmetry $\mathcal{N}=1$, which are described by the heterotic G$_2$ system. We construct new families of AdS$_3$ solutions to this system on homogeneous 3-Sasakian manifolds with squashed metrics.

Abstract:We present a pedagogical overview of flux compactifications in string theory, from the basic ideas to the most recent developments. We concentrate on closed string fluxes in type II theories. We start by reviewing the supersymmetric flux configurations with maximally symmetric four-dimensional spaces. We then discuss the no-go theorems (and their evasion) for compactifications with fluxes. We analyze the resulting four-dimensional effective theories, as well as some of its perturbative and non-perturbative corrections, focusing on moduli stabilization. Finally, we briefly review statistical studies of flux backgrounds.

Abstract:We consider compactifications of the recently discovered tachyon-free non-supersymmetric string on tori of lorentzian self-dual lattice. The one-loop cosmological constant is computed as a function of the parameters characterizing the lattices. When the lattice parameters are treated as dynamical variables, their equations of motion require extremization of Λ. This extremization determines the allowed gauge groups and mass spectra. We explicity find some extrema of Λ, valid to all orders in perturbation theory. A very general duality relation between compactifications is demonstrated, which leads to an equivalence of compactifications on tori of radii R and 1/R.

Abstract:We confront the problem of giving a fundamental definition to perturbative string theory in spacetimes with totally compact space (taken to be a torus for simplicity, though the nature of the problem is very general) and non-compact time. Due to backreaction induced by the presence of even a single string quantum, the usual formulation of perturbative string theory in a fixed classical background is infrared-divergent at all subleading orders in the string coupling, and needs to be amended. The problem can be seen as a closed string analogue of D0-brane recoil under an impact by closed strings (a situation displaying extremely similar infrared divergences). Inspired by the collective coordinate treatment of the D0-brane recoil, whereby the translational modes of the D0-brane are introduced as explicit dynamical variables in the path integral, we construct a similar formalism for the case of string-induced gravitational backreaction, in which the spatially uniform modes of the background fields on the compact space are quantized explicitly. The formalism can equally well be seen as an ultraviolet completion of a minisuperspace quantum cosmology with string degrees of freedom. We consider the amplitudes for the universe to have two cross-sections with specified spatial properties and string contents, and show (at the first non-trivial order) that they are finite within our formalism.

Abstract:Type IIB strings are compactified on a Calabi-Yau three-fold. When Calabi-Yau-valued expectation values are given to the NS-NS and RR three-form field strengths, the dilaton hypermultiplet becomes both electrically and magnetically charged. The resultant classical potential is calculated, and minima are found. At singular points in the moduli space, such as Argyres-Douglas points, supersymmetric minima are found. A formula for the classical potential in $N=2$ supergravity is given which holds in the presence of both electric and magnetic charges.

Abstract:We study circle compactifications of tensionless bosonic string theory, both at the classical and the quantum level. The physical state condition for different representations of BMS$_3$, the worldsheet residual gauge symmetry for tensionless strings, admits three inequivalent quantum vacua. We obtain the compactified mass spectrum in each of these vacua using canonical quantization and explicate their properties.

Abstract:Some physicists hope to use string/M-theory to construct a comprehensive underlying theory of our physical world a "final theory". Can such a theory be tested? A quantum theory of gravity must be formulated in 10 dimensions, so obviously testing it experimentally requires projecting it onto our 4D world (called "compactification"). Most string theorists study theories, including aspects such as AdS/CFT, not phenomena, and are not much interested in testing theories beyond the Standard Model about our world. Compactified theories generically have many realistic features whose necessary presence provides some tests, such as gravity, Yang-Mills forces like the Standard Model ones, chiral fermions that lead to parity violation, softly broken supersymmetry, Higgs physics, families, hierarchical fermion masses and more. All tests of theories in physics have always depended on assumptions and approximate calculations, and tests of compactified string/M-theories do too. String phenomenologists have also formulated some explicit tests for compactified theories. In particular, I give examples of tests from compactified M-theory (involving Higgs physics, predictions for superpartners at LHC, electric dipole moments, and more). It is clear that compactified theories exist that can describe worlds like ours, and it is clear that even if a multiverse were real it does not prevent us from finding comprehensive compactified theories like one that might describe our world. I also discuss what we might mean by a final theory, what we might want it to explain, and comment briefly on multiverse issues from the point of view of finding a theory that describes our world.

Abstract:We study the compactification of the (2, 0) and type-II little-string theories on S1, T2 and T3 with an R-symmetry twist that preserves half the supersymmetry. We argue that it produces the same moduli spaces of vacua as compactification of the (1, 0) theory with E8 Wilson lines given by a maximal embedding of SU(2). In certain limits, this reproduces the moduli space of SU(2) with a massive adjoint hyper-multiplet. In the type-II little-string theory case, we observe a peculiar phase transition where the strings condense. We conjecture a generalization to more than two 5-branes which involves instantons on non-commutative T4. We conclude with open questions.

Abstract:Building on recent progress in the study of compactifications of $6d$ $(1,0)$ superconformal field theories (SCFTs) on Riemann surfaces to $4d$ $\mathcal{N}=1$ theories, we initiate a systematic study of compactifications of $5d$ $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFTs on Riemann surfaces to $3d$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories. Specifically, we consider the compactification of the so-called rank 1 Seiberg $E_{N_f+1}$ SCFTs on tori and tubes with flux in their global symmetry, and put the resulting $3d$ theories to various consistency checks. These include matching the (usually enhanced) IR symmetry of the $3d$ theories with the one expected from the compactification, given by the commutant of the flux in the global symmetry of the corresponding $5d$ SCFT, and identifying the spectrum of operators and conformal manifolds predicted by the $5d$ picture. As the models we examine are in three dimensions, we encounter novel elements that are not present in compactifications to four dimensions, notably Chern-Simons terms and monopole superpotentials, that play an important role in our construction. The methods used in this paper can also be used for the compactification of any other $5d$ SCFT that has a deformation leading to a $5d$ gauge theory.

In the earlier work [L-L-S-Y] (D(2): arXiv:0809.2121 [math.AG], with Si Li and Ruifang Song) from the project, we explored this notion for the case of D1-branes (i.e. D-strings) and laid down some basic ingredients toward understanding the notion of D-string world-sheet instantons in this context. In this continuation, D(10), of D(2), we move on to construct a moduli stack of semistable morphisms from Azumaya nodal curves with a fundamental module to a projective Calabi-Yau 3-fold $Y$. In this Part I of the note, D(10.1), we define the notion of twisted central charge $Z$ for Fourier-Mukai transforms of dimension 1 and width [0] from nodal curves and the associated stability condition on such transforms and prove that for a given compact stack of nodal curves $C_{\cal M}/{\cal M}$, the stack $FM^{1,[0];Zss}_{C_{\cal M}/{\cal M}}(Y,c)$ of $Z$-semistable Fourier-Mukai transforms of dimension 1 and width [0] from nodal curves in the family $C_{\cal M}/{\cal M}$ to $Y$ of fixed twisted central charge $c$ is compact. The Standard Model from String Theory: What Have We Learned?

Abstract:Amidst all candidates of physics beyond the Standard Model, string theory provides a unique proposal for incorporating gauge and gravitational interactions. In string theory, a four-dimensional theory that unifies quantum mechanics and gravity is obtained automatically if one posits that the additional dimensions predicted by the theory are small and curled up, a concept known as compactification. The gauge sector of the theory is specified by the topology and geometry of the extra dimensions, and the challenge is to reproduce all the features of the Standard Model of Particle Physics from them. We review the state-of-the-art in reproducing the Standard Model from string compactifications, together with the lessons drawn from this fascinating quest. We describe novel scenarios and mechanisms that string theory provides to address some of the Standard Model puzzles, as well as the most frequent signatures of new physics that could be detected in future experiments. We finally comment on recent developments that connect, in a rather unexpected way, the Standard Model with Quantum Gravity, and that may change our field theory notion of naturalness.

Abstract:We study the string topology of a closed oriented Riemannian manifold M. We describe a compact moduli space of diagrams, and show how the cellular chain complex of this space gives algebraic operations on the singular chains of the free loop space LM of M. These operations are well-defined on the homology of a quotient of this moduli space, which has the homotopy type of a compactification of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces. In particular, our action of the 0-dimensional homology of the quotient space on the homology of the free loop space of M recovers the Cohen-Godin positive boundary TQFT.

A Worldsheet Description of Flux Compactifications

Abstract:We demonstrate how recent developments in string field theory provide a framework to systematically study type II flux compactifications with non-trivial Ramond-Ramond profiles. We present an explicit example where physical observables can be computed order by order in a small parameter which can be effectively viewed as string coupling constant. We obtain the corresponding background solution of the string field equations of motions up to the second order in the expansion. Along the way, we show how the tadpole cancellations of the string field equations lead to the minimization of the F-term potential of the low energy supergravity description. String field action expanded around the obtained background solution furnishes a worldsheet description of the flux compactifications.

Abstract:We study and extend the duality web unifying different decoupling limits of type II superstring theories and M theory. We systematically build connections to different corners, such as matrix theories, nonrelativistic string and M theory, tensionless (and ambitwistor) string theory, Carrollian string theory, and spin matrix limits of AdS/CFT.
