Abstract:This study describes the development of an assessment to evaluate the well-being of PhD researchers using a clinically approved methodology that places the perceptions and experiences of the subject population at the heart of its construction. It identifies and assesses the range and relative importance of seven distinct dimensions which are shown to impact adversely on the perceived well-being of student researchers across all stages of their studies. According to the findings, the well-being of doctoral students comprises needs relating to development, facilities, home and health, research, social, supervisor and university. The instrument was found to demonstrate good content validity and internal reliability. Its use offers new insights into the experiences of early career researchers and may inform efforts to better support them. This, in turn, may have a positive impact upon retention levels and future career choices for this research population.

Alternatives to Laboratory Animals

Abstract:The Three Rs have become widely accepted and pursued, and are now the go-to framework that encourages the humane use of animals in science, where no other option is believed to exist. However, many people, including scientists, harbour varying degrees of concern about the value and impact of the Three Rs. This ranges from a continued adherence to the Three Rs principles in the belief that they have performed well, through a belief that there should be more emphasis (or indeed a sole focus) on replacement, to a view that the principles have hindered, rather than helped, a critical approach to animal research that should have resulted in replacement to a much greater extent. This critical review asks questions of the Three Rs and their implementation, and provides an overview of the current situation surrounding animal use in biomedical science (chiefly in research). It makes a case that it is time to move away from the Three Rs and that, while this happens, the principles need to be made more robust and enforced more efficiently. To expedite a shift from animal use in science, toward a much greater and quicker adoption of human-specific New Approach Methodologies (NAMs), some argue for a straightforward focus on the best available science.

Abstract:The road to becoming an astronomer is exciting, but often fraught with danger and conflicting messages. A PhD student is inundated with catch-phrases such as "publish or perish" and "it's not about the quantity, but the quality of work". How do we know which advice to follow? How can we publish copious amounts of quality work in only three years so as to maximize our success in the future? How do we even know what "good quality" really is? With only a short time to prepare ourselves for the big wide world of Astronomy, what is the best way for a PhD student to maximize their research and ultimately maximize their success as a real astronomer? The PhD students of today are the astronomers of tomorrow, but their journey depends on a positive work environment in which they can thrive and improve. Here I present the results of a survey of current PhD students on how they believe they can maximize their success in science. I find that PhD students in Australia expect to write more papers during their PhD than is expected by their supervisors, but that they are generally happy with the quality of their supervision. Above all, students love telescopes, and hands-on observations are an important part of acquiring the knowledge and culture necessary to becoming a real astronomer.

Abstract:Reading primary research literature is an essential skill for scientists. However, the high complexity of research papers may pose a barrier to the development of scientific literacy. In semi-structured interviews, we explore how 33 biologists including undergraduates, postgraduates and researchers approach reading an unfamiliar scientific paper. We find that some readers are data-centric, focusing on their own critical evaluation of the data presented, whereas others adopt a more narrative-centric approach, relying on the descriptions of authors to inform their understanding. There was a bias towards undergraduates adopting the narrative-centric approach and researchers adopting the data-centric approach. All postdoctoral researchers and academics prioritised critical interpretation of the data, indicating this is a characteristic of experienced scientific readers. The ability to demonstrate scientific reading skills was context-dependent, particularly with respect to time available and whether a paper aligns well with a reader's specialist area of knowledge. Inexperienced readers often lacked sufficient prior knowledge on which to base their reading, which represented a barrier to their engagement. We make recommendations for how scientific literacy should be developed within undergraduate teaching and beyond, noting that 'one-off' teaching strategies are insufficient when the development of scientific reading skills is a career-long process.

Abstract:The extensive focus on performance indicators in research evaluation has been facing critique in science studies. Stemming from a neoliberalist paradigm, metrics allegedly objectify and create certainty about researchers' performance. This has created a publish-or-perish culture where deviant behaviour, such as research misconduct, may have become the rule of the game. Not only does this culture foster a decrease of scientists' well-being, but also a decrease in research quality. In recent years, calls for a culture change have accumulated, from discussing detrimental cultural aspects under IchbinHannah to studies that demonstrate the connection between research culture and research integrity. This study is a qualitative analysis of how astronomers reimagine their research culture. This includes alternative output formats, alternative evaluation criteria and how they aspire to do research differently. In summary, we find that the time is ripe for a transformation in research culture towards a more participative and diverse work environment. This may include the use of an open knowledge management infrastructure, where all sorts of research output of various stages can be stored and shared. Moreover, through a more reflexive evaluation, which is continuously adapted to the needs of the researchers, scientific quality may be encouraged, rather than producing more and more publications. This study sets the basis for future action research with the aim of transforming academic cultures towards more participative ones, where scientists can let their creative minds thrive and collaborate beyond disciplinary boundaries.
How females of chirping and trilling field crickets integrate the 'what' and 'where' of male acoustic signals during decision making

Abstract:In crickets acoustic communication serves mate selection. Female crickets have to perceive and integrate male cues relevant for mate choice while confronted with several different signals in an acoustically diverse background. Overall female decisions are based on the attractiveness of the temporal pattern (informative about the 'what') and on signal intensity (informative about the 'where') of male calling songs. Here, we investigated how the relevant cues for mate choice are integrated during the decision process by females of five different species of chirping and trilling field crickets. Using a behavioral design, female preferences in no-choice and choice situations for male calling songs differing in pulse rate, modulation depth, intensities, chirp/trill arrangements and temporal shifts were examined. Sensory processing underlying decisions in female field crickets is rather similar as combined evidence suggested that incoming song patterns were analyzed separately by bilaterally paired networks for pattern attractiveness and pattern intensity. A downstream gain control mechanism leads to a weighting of the intensity cue by pattern attractiveness. While remarkable differences between species were observed with respect to specific processing steps, closely related species exhibited more similar preferences than did more distantly related species.

Kelton Verble and Ellen Keaveny are authors on ‘A rapid return to normal: temporal gene expression patterns following cold exposure in the bumble bee Bombus impatiens’, published in JEB. Kelton is a PhD candidate in the lab of Dr Jeffrey Lozier at The University of Alabama, USA, investigating the transcriptomics and epigenomics underlying thermal tolerance in bumble bees. Ellen is a PhD candidate in the lab of Michael Dillon at the University of Wyoming, USA, investigating how temperature affects bumble bees at cellular, organismal, population and community levels.

Graduate education in the biomedical sciences: critical observations on training for research careers

Abstract:Several aspects of the processes for the pre- and postdoctoral training of PhDs and the postdoctoral research training of MDs are critically examined. The size of the predoctoral pipeline, the sources of support for the students in it, trends in the annual production of bioscience PhDs, and prospects for growth in opportunities, as defined in increases in availability of public and private funds for research, are catalogued. Evidence for the existence of a surplus of research scientists--based on the size and growth of the pool of postdoctorals, the success rates now being experienced by young postdoctorals in competing for National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants, and the success of young postdoctorals in securing career employment--is evaluated, and the conclusion that the nation is producing too many research scientists is suggested. The pros and cons of "downregulating" the production of scientists are explored, the difficulties of reaching a national consensus on the degree of reduction and the partition of reduction among fields of science and academic institutions and academic departments are described, and the mechanisms conceivably available for accomplishing the task--reducing NIH training funds, autoregulation by academic institutions and/or scientific disciplines, and reliance on the decisions of well-informed (probably by the National Academy of Sciences) degree candidates--are enumerated; a preference for the last of these mechanisms is indicated. The NIH's formal training programs are compared with its informal support of training under research grants; questions that the latter practice raises are identified. The striking disparity between the duration of training for conventional predoctoral PhD candidates and that for dual-degree (MD-PhD) aspirants is noted. The measurement problems of assessing the duration of postdoctoral training are highlighted. The fact that dual-degree scientists seem to compete little, if any, more successfully for the great bulk of NIH research grants than do singly-degreed MDs or PhDs is noted, suggesting the advisability of a fresh and objective review of these dual-degree programs, especially the NIH's Medical Scientist Training Program, to reassess their value in the light of their cost. Some characteristics of careers in the biomedical sciences are outlined. Data are presented on the high turnover rates of first-time-ever entrants into the pool of NIH grantees or, stated otherwise, the relatively low rates of survival of principal investigators (PIs) in the NIH research grant system; a method of estimating the steady-state number of NIH ex- PIs "around" at any given moment is proposed.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Abstract:Why does groundbreaking progress in our understanding of the brain seem scarce (at least to me)? The prevailing system of research funding and publication, deeply rooted in peer review and contingent upon preliminary data, tends to favor safe, conventional ideas, thereby impeding major breakthroughs. The prerequisite of preliminary data for hypothesis validation transforms grant-seeking into a cycle that prioritizes data accumulation over pioneering ideas, fostering publications that align with pre-established notions endorsed by reviewers. Are we, the scientists, becoming akin to the subjects of our experiments? Consider this: in behavioral studies, rodents are often deprived of food and water to motivate their learning of a task. Since a successful task is rewarded, animals quickly learn the task and become very efficient at it after some time. Now, envision neuroscientists in a similar plight, navigating the pursuit of funding and recognition in high-profile journals. This predicament is faced by many (from undergraduate students to established principal investigators) in our field: a constant scramble for financial support and influential publications to advance our research and careers. But who holds the power to reward our efforts? In the case of rodents, scientists dictate the terms; they design the experiments and determine the rewards. Unlike Douglas Adams' claim in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy that humans are monitored by mice (but are we?), it is our human peers who judge the worthiness of our work for funding and publication. Does this relentless cycle of deprivation and reward truly nurture innovation, or are we conditioning our brightest minds to conform to a well-trodden path? Abstract:Having a clear and stable sense of how one performs in a field is a key contributor to goal pursuit. Performance feedback is often considered a crucial resource for developing this clear and stable self-knowledge but may be less optimally integrated when feedback is considered inaccurate or dishonest. The current paper investigates how such feedback perceptions may limit the development of people's ability self-concept, and how workplace contexts can restrict communication. A 2-week daily diary study among 197 junior researchers working in STEM-fields ( N = 1,353 data points) showed that those in more competitive (vs. more collaborative) work environments overall perceived feedback as more inaccurate and dishonest (but not as more positively inflated). These results did not differ for men and women, showing that both face negative consequences of working in a more competitive context in terms of their ability to get high-quality feedback. On the daily level, results showed that days on which people received more inaccurate and dishonest (but not positively inflated) feedback were also days on which they reported higher imposter feelings, and lower ability self-esteem, self-concept clarity, and self-concept stability. In turn, days on which people felt more like an imposter and reported lower ability self-esteem, self-concept clarity, and self-concept stability, were also days on which motivation was lower. Ability self-esteem and self-concept clarity (but not imposter feelings and self-concept stability) were also related to lower daily risk-taking tendencies. Together, these results show that an important contextual factor– the perceived competitiveness of one's work environment - influences feedback inaccuracy and dishonesty, with consequences for the ability to develop a clear, stable and certain ability self-concept.

Abstract:There is a crisis of valuation practices in the current academic life sciences, triggered by unsustainable growth and “hyper-competition.” Quantitative metrics in evaluating researchers are seen as replacing deeper considerations of the quality and novelty of work, as well as substantive care for the societal implications of research. Junior researchers are frequently mentioned as those most strongly affected by these dynamics. However, their own perceptions of these issues are much less frequently considered. This paper aims at contributing to a better understanding of the interplay between how research is valued and how young researchers learn to live, work and produce knowledge within academia. We thus analyze how PhD students and postdocs in the Austrian life sciences ascribe worth to people, objects and practices as they talk about their own present and future lives in research. We draw on literature from the field of valuation studies and its interest in how actors refer to different forms of valuation to account for their actions. We explore how young researchers are socialized into different valuation practices in different stages of their growing into science. Introducing the concept of “regimes of valuation” we show that PhD students relate to a wider evaluative repertoire while postdocs base their decisions on one dominant regime of valuing research. In conclusion, we discuss the implications of these findings for the epistemic and social development of the life sciences, and for other scientific fields.

Abstract:Historically, bird song has been regarded as a sex-specific signalling trait; males sing to attract females and females drive the evolution of signal exaggeration by preferring males with ever more complex songs. This view provides no functional role for female song. Historic geographical research biases generalized pronounced sex differences of phylogenetically derived northern temperate zone songbirds to all songbirds. However, we now know that female song is common and that both sexes probably sang in the ancestor of modern songbirds. This calls for research on adaptive explanations and mechanisms regulating female song, and a reassessment of questions and approaches to identify selection pressures driving song elaboration in both sexes and subsequent loss of female song in some clades. In this short review and perspective we highlight newly emerging questions and propose a research framework to investigate female song and song sex differences across species. We encourage experimental tests of mechanism, ontogeny, and function integrated with comparative evolutionary analyses. Moreover, we discuss the wider implications of female bird song research for our understanding of male and female communication roles.
