Abstract:Strength and electrical conductivity (EC) are key properties for heat-resistant Al-Zr-based alloy wires used as overhead transmission lines. Developing high-strength conductors with EC over 61.0% IACS has been a long-standing issue for heat-resistant Al conductive wires. In this work, a new design idea involving the coupling design of deformation and ageing was innovatively proposed to produce ultra-heat-resistant Al-0.2Zr-0.06Sc wires. The desired combination of high strength (195 ± 2 MPa) and good EC (61.2% IACS) was successfully achieved without annealing treatment. The strength residual rate of cold-drawn Al-0.2Zr-0.06Sc wire is as high as 94.0% after heat exposure of 280°C/1 h.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper aims to address the following issues: 1. **Combination of High Strength and High Conductivity**: Investigate how to achieve thermally stable Al-Zr based alloy wires with high strength (greater than 160 MPa) and high conductivity (greater than 61.0% IACS) without annealing. Currently, Al-Zr based conductive wires have high strength after cold drawing, but their conductivity is usually below 60.0% IACS. 2. **Limitations of Traditional Processing Methods**: Traditional processing methods struggle to improve conductivity without sacrificing strength. The high density of dislocations introduced during cold drawing enhances material strength but also increases electron scattering, thereby damaging conductivity. Although annealing can improve conductivity, it sacrifices strength. 3. **Low-Cost and High-Efficiency Processing Path**: Develop a new processing path to simplify the production process and keep costs within an acceptable range. The study successfully prepared Al-0.2Zr-0.06Sc wires with a diameter of 4.0 mm and a total length of 18.3 km by combining continuous casting direct rolling (CCDR), aging treatment, and cold drawing processes, achieving a combination of high strength (195 ± 2 MPa) and good conductivity (61.2% IACS). In summary, the main goal of this paper is to propose a new processing path that can achieve Al-Zr based conductive wires with both high strength and high conductivity without annealing, thereby overcoming the trade-off between strength and conductivity in traditional processing methods.
