Abstract:Engineering nanostructures in metallic materials such as nanograins and nanotwins can promote plastic performance significantly. Nano/ultrafine-grained metals embedded in coarse grains called bimodal metals and nanotwinned polycrystalline metals have been proved to possess extensively improved yield strength whilst keeping good ductility. This paper will present an experimental study on nanostructured stainless steel prepared by surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) with surface impacts of lower strain rate (10 s−1–103 s−1) and higher strain rate (104 s−1–105 s−1). Microstructure transition has been observed from the original γ-austenite coarse grains to α′-martensite nanograins with bimodal grain size distribution for lower strain rates to nanotwins in the ultrafine/coarse grained austenite phase for higher strain rates. Meanwhile, we will further address the mechanism-based plastic models to describe the yield strength, strain hardening and ductility in nanostructured metals with bimodal grain size distribution and nanotwinned polycrystalline metals. The proposed theoretical models can comprehensively describe the plastic deformation in these two kinds of nanostructured metals and excellent agreement is achieved between the numerical and experimental results. These models can be utilized to optimize the strength and ductility in nanostructured metals by controlling the size and distribution of nanostructures.
Reforming Nanostructured CuAg Alloy to Improve Ductility and Electrical Conductivity

Abstract:Nanostructured metallic materials often lack sufficient work-hardening capability and suffer premature necking during tensile loading. In this study, intense rolling strain was applied to process nanocrystalline CuAg sheet, and aging treatment was designed to further tailor the microstructure and properties. Features of grains, Ag precipitates and short-range ordered (SRO) structure were characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM). Superior tensile strength of 600 MPa, uniform elongation of 10% and electrical conductivity of 86.7% IACS were successfully achieved. Mechanisms for the balanced mechanical and electrical properties were analyzed.
Achieving high strength and high conductivity synergy through hierarchical precipitation stimulated structural heterogeneities in a Cu-Ag-Zr alloy

Abstract:Cu alloys can be plastically deformed to reach ultra-high strength, but often at an expense of their electrical conductivity. Here we report that the introduction of hierarchical precipitations and the resultant microstructural heterogeneities at different scales could overcome the strength-conductivity tradeoff in Cu-Ag-Zr alloy. The intrinsic particle size dependent precipitation behavior, owing to the different cooling rate during powder atomization, has been inherited after hot isostatic pressing (HIP) of powders into bulk sample. The following cold rolling and aging created multi-scale structures with the sub-micron particles at grain boundaries and sub-micron-to-nano scale precipitates in the grain interior. Those introduced heterogeneous precipitate configurations also altered the evolution of deformation structures during cold rolling and aging, with partially recrystallized grains embedded in highly deformed matrix featured by high density of dislocation and substructures, which results in an excellent combination of tensile strength (704 MPa), electrical conductivity (88.7% IACS), and tensile elongation (14.9%). Besides, no significant coarsening in the micro-nano structures is observed after annealing at 450 °C for 1 h. The findings in this work proposed a novel approach for designing high-strength, high-conductivity, and high-thermal stability copper alloys based on hierarchical precipitation-stimulated structures at nano-to-micron scale.

Abstract:Nano-lamellar structured Cu-0.1 at.% Zr alloys are prepared by the combination of equal channel angular pressing and subsequent cryogenic rolling. The advanced processing route enables a systematic reduction of the lamellae boundary spacing down to 45 nm and a concurrent increase of yield strength up to 626 MPa. Subsequent annealing at temperatures up to 673 K induced recovery processes and uniform coarsening through triple junction motion, avoiding a catastrophic degradation of the microstructure and performance and preserving the yield strength at a level comparable to ultrafine-grained copper. Simultaneously, the tensile uniform elongation experienced a substantial recovery up to 11.9 %. The high thermal stability is mainly attributed to the low mobility of grain boundary and the relaxation of non-equilibrium grain boundaries, both of which are facilitated by the microalloying of Cu with Zr. Based on the theory of dislocation pile-up at boundaries, the Hall-Petch equation is adopted and extended to the lamellar structured Cu-0.1 at.% Zr alloy, revealing a lower-critical bound of 90 nm for lamellae boundary spacing, corresponding to an effective boundary spacing of about 150 nm.

Abstract:AbstractTo address the trade-off between strength and electrical conductivity, we propose a strategy: introducing precipitated particles into a structure composed of deformation twins. A Cu-0.3%Zr alloy was designed to verify our strategy. Zirconium was dissolved into a copper matrix by solution treatment prior to cryorolling and precipitated in the form of Cu5Zr from copper matrix via a subsequent aging treatment. The microstructure evolutions of the processed samples were investigated by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis, and the mechanical and physical behaviours were evaluated through tensile and electrical conductivity tests. The results demonstrated that superior tensile strength (602.04 MPa) and electrical conductivity (81.4% IACS) was achieved. This strategy provides a new route for balancing the strength and electrical conductivity of copper alloys, which can be developed for large-scale industrial application.

Abstract:Automotive heat exchanger materials with high strength and excellent corrosion resistance performance are highly required due to the increasing demands of weight reduction and fuel economy. In this work, 0.16 wt% Zr was added into a Al-1.5Mn-0.3Fe-0.6Si-0.5Cu(wt.%) alloy for the improvement of the related performance. The microstructure, mechanical properties and electrochemical properties were investigated. The results indicate that Zr addition can decrease grain size and increase the volume fraction of low angle boundaries (LAGBs) in the alloy. The improved strength derives from finer grain sizes and Al3Zr particle. The enhanced pitting corrosion resistance mainly results from the higher volume fraction of LAGBs and smaller grain sizes. Coupling Effect of Mn Addition and Deformation on Mechanical and Electrical Properties of Al-Zr Alloys

Abstract:In order to increase the strength of Al-Zr alloys, which are promisingly used for heat-resistant conductors, the coupling effect of Mn addition (0.16 wt.% and 0.88 wt.%) and deformation on the precipitation, mechanical, and electrical properties of an Al-0.18wt.% Zr alloy was studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atom probe tomography (APT), hardness testing, and electrical conductivity measurement, respectively. Results showed that the Mn addition fully suppresses the Al3Zr precipitation in both hot-deformed and undeformed cases, which is mainly due to a strong Mn-vacancy bonding, in which Mn atoms seize vacancies and hence reduce the available vacancies for Al3Zr nucleation. Minor 0.16 wt.% Mn addition causes a simultaneous decrease in hardness and electrical conductivity, regardless of whether there is deformation. The higher 0.88 wt.% Mn addition, however, significantly increases the hardness by over 40%, especially in combination with deformation. Possible influencing factors such as grain size, dislocations, intergranular/intragranular precipitation, and solute clusters are comparatively discussed in terms of microstructural features and mechanical/electrical properties that are tuned by Mn addition and/or deformation. It is found that the Mn addition can make remarkable contributions to the hardness and thermal stability of the Al-Zr alloys when coupled with deformation.

Abstract:Alloy composition and heat treatment process have limited possibility to enhance ultra‐high strength aluminum alloys, which restricted their widespread application in lightweight equipment. Consequently, high density dislocations and grain refinement were suggested to strengthen ultra‐high strength aluminum alloys. Here, a novel nanostructured Al‐Zn‐Mg‐Cu‐Zr‐Sc (AZMCZS) alloy with homogeneous microstructure and average grain size around 117.7 nm was prepared through the synergistic processing of hot extrusion and high pressure torsion. Additionally, the microstructures and strengthening mechanisms of the nanostructured Al alloy were analyzed. It was observed that ultimate tensile strength of the nanostructured Al alloy reached nearly 1 GPa, and the elongation of the alloy was 1.9%. The nanostructured Al alloy mainly consists of nanoscale grains (~117.7 nm), high density dislocations (2.4×1015 m‐2), nano‐sized precipitates (the size of 20‐51 nm) and solute atom clusters (~3 nm). The multiple strengthening mechanisms of the nanostructured Al alloy were revealed in terms of grain refinement, dislocations, precipitates, and solute atom clusters. Grain refinement and dislocation strengthening showed superior outcomes and were considered to be the predominant strengthening mechanisms. These findings demonstrate that this nanostructural architecture offers a new way to design super‐strength metals and alloys through effectively controlling the processing regime of severe plastic deformation. Abstract:A novel scalable approach via Zr micro-alloying to enhance the corrosion resistance of high-strength Aluminum (Al) alloy A206 without compromising mechanical strength has been proposed. The improved corrosion resistance in Zr-micro-alloyed A206 is attributed to the refined grains, narrowed precipitation-free zones (PFZs), and modified precipitates with Al 3 Zr nanophase. With these benefits, the Al 3 Zr nanophase promotes a rapid oxide passivation film, inhibits diffusion and redeposition of copper (Cu), impedes chlorine (Cl) penetration through grain boundaries (GBs), and promotes cracking tolerance to mitigate corrosion degradation. This study provides new insights into designing high-strength Al alloys with superior corrosion resistance.

Abstract:In this work, we introduce a microstructure with high-density nano solute clusters by rolling at 100 °C to efficiently fabricate a high-strength ZK60 alloy plate. High yield strength of 336 MPa is achieved. The rolling process at 100 °C facilitates the formation of high-density dislocations and nano substructures, which causes the formation of high-density nano Zn solute clusters. The high strength is mainly attributed to the formation of high-density nano solute clusters, dislocations, and nano substructures. The finding of nano clusters shed light on designing high-strength Mg alloys, and the applied conventional rolling can be readily implemented in industrial production.

Abstract:Introducing high density of nano-precipitates to recrystallized ultrafine grains is helpful to realize strength-ductility synergy but is a challenging task, because recrystallization and precipitate growth/coarsening usually concur. Here we develop a pre-aging powder metallurgy processing route to achieve such microstructure in Al-Mg-Sc-Zr alloy. During the pre-aging stage, atomic clusters including short-range order are formed within the grains, which provide new sites for the nucleation and enable the formation of fine Al 3 (Sc, Zr) precipitates. Subsequent high-temperature sintering and hot extrusion lead to grain recrystallization. The nano-precipitates not only further strengthen the ultrafine-grained alloy by Orowan mechanism, but also greatly enhance the strain-hardening rate by dislocation-precipitate interaction, resulting in excellent strength-ductility synergy. The utilization of digital image correlation (DIC) analysis allows for the observation of dynamic strain aging during the tensile process, whereby the strain demonstrates a distinctive step-like transition coinciding with the passage of the Portevin-Le Chatelier (PLC) band. This work provides a new path for improving the mechanical properties of the same type of metallic materials.

Abstract:The microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-0.35Fe alloys with a series of different zirconium (Zr) additions from 0.1 to 0.4% are investigated by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and tensile testing. The as-cast structure of the alloys varies with the Zr content. When the content of Zr is 0.1%, Zr dissolves into the aluminum (Al) matrix completely and iron (Fe) concentrates along the boundary in a network of eutectic Al3Fe. With the increase in Zr content to 0.2% and above, nanoscale Al3Zr particles appear in the alloy. With the Zr content increasing from 0.1 to 0.4%, the grain size of the Al matrix decreases from 73 to 23 μm. The morphology of the eutectic Al3Fe phase changes from short rod-like to an agglomerated structure consisting of finer and shorter rod-like shapes. The tensile and yield strengths increase while the total elongation decreases with increasing Zr content. The strengthening mechanism of the alloy can be attributed to the combination of fine-grain, solution and second-phase strengthening.

Abstract:A high strength Al-Zr alloy was prepared based on a novel technique called gas-assisted continuous casting and extrusion (GAC). Results show that the solid solubility of Zr in the Al matrix could be increased due to the non-equilibrium solidification during the GAC process. After aging treatment (350 °C/275 h), the alloy has excellent combined properties (tensile strength and electrical conductivity of 200 MPa and 59.6% IACS, respectively); after cold drawing (94% deformation), the alloy can have tensile strength up to 278 MPa and good electrical conductivity (55.2% IACS). The GAC technology can fabricate aluminum alloy rod with higher solid solubility of Zr in a single-step operation, which is expected to be applied to the efficient preparation of high performance Al-Zr alloy wires.

Abstract:Modern industrial materials are often required to have excellent comprehensive properties. Contact wire used in high-speed train needs possess high strength and toughness, high conductivity and wear resistance, which are often trade-off with each other. In this work, we constructed a fractal structure with high-density nano-precipitates in CuCrZr alloy via rotary swage plus aging, and break the strength, conductivity and ductility limits of existing Cu alloys. The CuCrZr alloy exhibits unprecedented comprehensive properties of a high ultimate tensile strength of 626 MPa, a ductility of 19% and an electrical conductivity of 82% international annealed copper standard (IACS). Microstructural analysis indicates that the fractal structure and high-density nano-Cr precipitates block and accumulate dislocations, but allow electrons to flow unimpededly along the axis of CuCrZr wire, resulting in the high toughness and conductivity. Our finding verifies fractal structure has the potential to obtain materials with super excellent comprehensive properties.

Abstract:Here, 0.3 wt.%Zr was introduced in an Al-4 wt.%Cu-0.5 wt.%Mn-0.1 wt.%Fe alloy to investigate its influence on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the alloy. The microstructures of both as-cast and T6-treated Al–Cu–Mn–Fe (ACMF) and Al–Cu–Mn–Fe–Zr (ACMFZ) alloys were analyzed. The intermetallic compounds formed through the casting procedure include Al2Cu and Al7Cu2Fe, and the Al2Cu phase dissolves into the matrix and re-precipitates as θ′ phase during the T6 process. The introduction of Zr results in the precipitation of L12-Al3Zr nanometric precipitates after T6, while the θ′ precipitates in ACMFZ alloy are much finer than those in ACMF alloy. The L12-Al3Zr precipitates were found coherently located with θ′, which was assumed beneficial for stabilizing the θ′ precipitates during the high-temperature tensile process. The tensile properties of ACMF and ACMFZ alloys at room temperature and elevated temperatures (200, 300, and 400 °C) were tested. Especially, the yield strength of ACMFZ alloys can reach 128 MPa and 65 MPa at 300 °C and 400 °C, respectively, which are 31% and 33% higher than those of ACMF alloys. The strengthening mechanisms of grain size, L12-Al3Zr, and θ′ precipitates on the tensile properties were discussed. This work may be referred to for designing Al–Cu alloys for application in high-temperature fields.

Optimizing the strength and ductility of fine structured 2024 Al alloy by nano-precipitation

Abstract:Alloys with grain or subgrain structures refined down to 1μm or below usually have high strength, but often inadequate tensile ductility. Past efforts in improving their ductility have usually led to a sacrifice of strength. We have developed an effective approach in achieving both high strength and high ductility in a 2024 Al alloy. The approach involves solution-treatment to partially dissolve T-phase particles, cryo-rolling to produce a fine-structure containing a high density of dislocations and submicrometer subgrains and aging to generate highly dispersed nano-precipitates. It was found that the remnant T-phase particles made it very effective in accumulating dislocations during cryo-rolling, which in turn promoted the precipitation of nanosized S′ precipitates with an interparticle spacing of only 10–20nm. Such a high density of S′ precipitates enabled effective dislocation pinning and accumulation, leading to simultaneous increases in strength, work-hardening ability and ductility.

Abstract:<p>Continuous preparation of high-conductivity and high-strength aluminium alloy cable remains a challenge. Here we reveal the scientific significance of high electrical conductivity Al-Ag-Sc-Zr alloy with ultrafine grains prepared by novel processing technologies, the combination of rheo-extrusion and accumulative continuous extrusion forming. Attributed to the continuous dynamic recrystallization during rheo-extrusion, equiaxial microstructure and significantly refined grains (2.8 ± 0.2 μm) were achieved. By means of partially replacing low conductive scandium and zirconium solute atoms with high conductive silver solute atoms, the processed alloy wires exhibit significant higher electrical conductivity (53.5 ± 0.4 %IACS) than the Al-Sc-Zr alloy with similar atomic concentration of alloying elements. Appropriate mechanical properties were also obtained due to the similar solution strengthening effects of silver atoms to scandium and zirconium atoms. These results highlight the potential of this high electrical conductivity Al-Ag-Sc-Zr alloy and its novel processing route.</p>

Abstract:Crystalline-amorphous composite have the potential to achieve high strength and high ductility through manipulation of their microstructures. Here, we fabricate a TiZr-based alloy with micrometer-size equiaxed grains that are made up of three-dimensional bicontinuous crystalline-amorphous nanoarchitectures (3D-BCANs). In situ tension and compression tests reveal that the BCANs exhibit enhanced ductility and strain hardening capability compared to both amorphous and crystalline phases, which impart ultra-high yield strength (~1.80 GPa), ultimate tensile strength (~2.3 GPa), and large uniform ductility (~7.0%) into the TiZr-based alloy. Experiments combined with finite element simulations reveal the synergetic deformation mechanisms; i.e., the amorphous phase imposes extra strain hardening to crystalline domains while crystalline domains prevent the premature shear localization in the amorphous phases. These mechanisms endow our material with an effective strength–ductility–strain hardening combination.

Enhanced Combination of Strength and Ductility in Ultrafine-Grained Aluminum Composites Reinforced with High Content Intragranular Nanoparticles

Abstract:Simultaneous enhancement of the strength and ductility in metal-matrix nanocomposites with high content nano-reinforcements is crucial for the development of novel composite materials. Here SiC/Al nanocomposites with ultrafine Al grains and intragranular 10 vol% SiC nanoparticle were prepared by mechanical alloying and hot pressure sintering followed by hot extrusion. The results show that nanocrystalline Al grains and uniformly distributed SiC nanoparticles (SiCnp) in the composite powders are obtained after ball-milling. The prior particle boundary (PPB) in the composite powders cannot be fully removed by sintering at 580 degrees C under 20 MPa, but can be eliminated by subsequent hot extrusion at 450 degrees C with a ratio 25:1. The extruded nanocomposites possess ultrafine Al grains with diameter 320 nm and intragranular SiCnp created by the dynamic recrystallizations (DRX). Such optimal microstructure favors a significant improvement of 284% in yield strength (YS) and 259% in ultimate tensile strength (UTS) compared with monolithic Al, and more interestingly, maintains an elongation up to 12% due to the homogeneous nanoparticles in fine Al grains. Theoretical analysis shows that the dominant strengthening factor is Orowan strengthening related to the high content intragranular SiCnp, with second factor grain boundary strengthening due to ultrafine Al grains.

Abstract:The hardness, tensile ductility and fatigue lifetime of nanostructured (NC) Cu–Zr alloyed thin films have been systematically measured at different Zr additions (0, 0.5, 2.0, 4.0, 8.0at.%). Experimental results showed that the Cu–0.5at.% Zr film exhibited the highest hardness, largest ductility and longest fatigue lifetime, which are increased by 120%, 80%, and above an order of magnitude, respectively, in comparison with its pure Cu counterpart. The simultaneous improvements of mechanical properties are rationalized with respect to microstructural evolutions related to Zr segregation at grain boundaries (GBs). Besides refinement in NC grains and enhancement in nanotwins, grain orientation was apparently modified by the GB Zr segregation. (110) grains were promoted and layer-like microstructure was formed with coexistence of three orientation of grains at the upper layer, facilitating Cu grain growth at room temperature. GB doping strengthening worked as an additional strengthening mechanism and mechanically driven grain growth became the predominant deformation mechanism and fatigue mechanism, which accounted for the optimal combination of mechanical properties achieved in the Cu–0.5at.% Zr film. When the Zr content was >2.0at.%, however, amorphous phases were formed at the GBs due to locally increased Zr concentration. The GB doping strengthening effect was concomitantly weakened and strength was gradually decreased. In addition, stress/strain localization occurred readily at the amorphous phase regions, triggering intergranular fracture and reducing ductility. During cyclic testing in the low stress range, GB amorphous phases strengthened rather impaired the GBs, which gave the Cu–Zr films a fatigue lifetime greater than that of the pure NC Cu film. The present results clearly indicate that, once solute content is suitably explored, the solute segregation at GBs in NC metals can not only retain NC grains in loading-free conditions, but also impart enhanced mechanical properties when exposed to applied stress.
