Abstract:A brief review is given on the current transition of the electrodeposition of materials by a mechanism of nucleation followed by diffusion-controlled growth. A short historical background to study the nucleation and growth by diffusion-controlled electrocrystallization is provided. Then, an outline of the major potentiostatic current transient modeling is given, with some comments on their relative merits. Finally, a summary of the current transition functions of nucleation and growth under diffusion-controlled electrocrystallization is given including the theoretical models that have been recently applied.

Abstract:Potentiostatic current transient is widely used to analyze the diffusion controlled three-dimensional nucleation process. SH model has a satisfied performance for almost all potentiostatic testing. However, some deviations between experimental results and the SH model's expression at decreasing period were reported. In this paper, we describe the deviation as resulting from diffusion depth is limited in electrolytic cell. Through a stochastic model is proposed, we derive an equation to describe reaction near the electrode surface of solute ions and their migration out of the diffusion zone. The theoretical model describes a limited-diffusion process using hemispherical nucleus revealed in SH model and Brownian motion in MD model. This model give a detail description of multiple nucleation process during electrodeposition. Based on the descriptions, it can be seen that SH model is a limiting case of our model, as diffusion depth R ->+infinity. And the equations also reveal the relationship between SH model and our new model. In addition, our theoretical equations are powerful enough to reproduce the potentiostatic current transient curves obtained from gold electrodepositing process. This work advances earlier models a step further and gives an explanation for the deviations between experimental data and standard model's description. (C) 2018 The Electrochemical Society.

Abstract:Electrodeposition is used at the industrial scale to make coatings, membranes, and composites. With better understanding of the nanoscale phenomena associated with the early stage of the process, electrodeposition has potential to be adopted by manufacturers of energy storage devices, advanced electrode materials, fuel cells, carbon dioxide capturing technologies, and advanced sensing electronics. The ability to conduct precise electrochemical measurements using cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and chronopotentiometry in addition to control of precursor composition and concentration makes electrocrystallization an attractive method to investigate nucleation and early-stage crystal growth. In this article, we review recent findings of nucleation and crystal growth behaviors at the nanoscale, paying close attention to those that deviate from the classical theories in various electrodeposition systems. The review affirms electrodeposition as a valuable method both for gaining new insights into nucleation and crystallization on surfaces and as a low-cost scalable technology for the manufacturing of advanced materials and devices.

Abstract:Electrochemical growth of metal nanocrystals is pivotal for material synthesis, processing, and resource recovery. Understanding the heterogeneous interface between electrolyte and electrode is crucial for nanocrystal nucleation, but the influence of this interaction is still poorly understood. This study employs advanced in situ measurements to investigate the heterogeneous nucleation of metals on solid surfaces. By observing the copper nanocrystal electrodeposition, an interphase interaction-induced nucleation mechanism highly dependent on substrate surface energy is uncovered. It shows that a high-energy (HE) electrode tended to form a polycrystalline structure, while a low-energy (LE) electrode induced a monocrystalline structure. Raman and electrochemical characterizations confirmed that HE interface enhances the interphase interaction, reducing the nucleation barrier for the sturdy nanostructures. This leads to a 30.92-52.21% reduction in the crystal layer thickness and a 19.18-31.78% increase in the charge transfer capability, promoting the formation of a uniform and compact film. The structural compactness of the early nucleated crystals enhances the deposit stability for long-duration electrodeposition. This research not only inspires comprehension of physicochemical processes correlated with heterogeneous nucleation, but also paves a new avenue for high-quality synthesis and efficient recovery of metallic nanomaterials.

Abstract:Meniscus-confined electrodeposition is a potential approach to fabricate three-dimensional (3D) metallic microstructures. However, the quality of the deposited microstructures by this approach, which is conventionally checked by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) used off-process, cannot be well in-process qualified. This paper presents a study on meniscus-confined electrodeposition of metallic microstructures with in-process monitoring of deposition qualities. Firstly, to understand the fabrication mechanism in meniscus-confined electrodeposition which formed the fundamental for quality control, mathematical model was derived to study the geometric shape of the meniscus. Multi-physical field simulation was carried out to investigate the effect of several process parameters on the deposition results, including the micropipette aperture, biased voltage and solution concentration, etc. Meniscus-confined electrodeposition of metallic micro-wires by utilizing a micropipette was carried out. The ionic current during the electrodeposition is in-process monitored for contact point detection and fabrication quality monitoring. The corresponding relationship between the quality of the fabricated micro-wires and the in-process monitored ionic currents was investigated. This study provides a potential way for in-process quality control with the local electrodeposition method.

Abstract:The results of a study of nucleation and growth of nuclei in polyligand pyrophosphate-trilonate electrolyte for Cu-Sn alloy deposition are presented. It is shown that the current transients obtained in a wide range of alloy deposition potentials correspond to the model of instantaneous formation of 3D crystals with diffusion control. The number of nuclei N increases from 0.19,108 cm-2 to 2.05,108 cm-2 with increase in polarization of the electrode. The thickness of continuous films is in the range of 3.6–10.2 nm depending on their deposition potential.

Abstract:In this microreview, the importance of electrochemical phase formation is outlined. Further, the establishment of current transition during electrochemical nucleation and growth is explored. First, the microreaction kinetic process of electrocrystallisation and the rate-controlling steps of electrodeposition are carefully discussed. Then, the current transient formulation under electrochemical polarisation-controlled electrocrystallisation is summarised. Finally, a summary of the process for calculating the current transient formulation of nucleation and growth under diffusion-controlled electrocrystallisation is explained in detail.

Concrete examples are also discussed to illustrate the application of this method in various industrial and scientific contexts. These promising advances open new perspectives for the optimization of electrodeposition processes, paving the way for innovative applications in various technological sectors.

Abstract:Copper metallization on carbon surface can improve physicochemical performances of carbon based materials and introduce multi-functionalities. This paper reports on the combined electrochemical characterization, in situ X-ray diffraction and fluorescence research, and scanning electron microscopic studies of nucleation and growth of Cu on individual carbon fibers. Compared to the flat glassy carbon substrates and Au thin film substrates, the onset potential of Cu electrodeposition on individual carbon microfiber is more negative with lower efficiencies, indicating the difficulty of Cu nucleation on carbon fiber surface. Utilizing the capability of synchrotron X-ray microbeam diffraction and fluorescence spectroscopy techniques, real time Cu crystalline structure and composition evolvement information during the electrochemical reaction processes have been studied. In situ study reveals random Cu grain formation and anisotropic growth. Dynamic Cu growth and dissolution were found to occur simultaneously during deposition. Cu nuclei density and size can be effectively controlled, in addition to the grain morphology and stability, indicating the possibility of electrochemical manipulation of microstructure thus the properties of Cu coated carbon materials. Abstract:Cyclic voltammetry (CV), chronoamperometry (CHR) in conjunction with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) technique have been performed to study the electrodeposition behavior of tin onto double reduction steel substrate from a stannous fluoborate acid bath. Results show that, under the experimental conditions, the initial reduction process of tin is controlled by diffusion and follows the three-dimensional (3D) nucleation and subsequent grain growth mechanism. With the increase of the applied cathodic overpotentials, the nucleation type of tin changes from progressive mechanism to instantaneous mechanism. When the deposition overpotential is high, the electrode surface is fully covered with tin deposits in short times that the current–time transient is composed of the tin nucleation current and the current attributed to proton reduction on the tin growth centers while the current due to proton reduction on the steel surface should be considered as well at low deposition overpotentials. Results also reveal that both the tin nucleation and proton reduction rate constant increase with increasing the cathodic overpotentials, and the proton reduction rate constant on the steel substrate surface is larger than that on the tin growth centers. The diffusion coefficient of tin species is found to be 1.24E−5 cm2 s−1.

Abstract:Heterogeneous nucleation on catalytic surfaces plunged into a fluid is described through a stochastic model. To generate this non-equilibrium process we assume that the turn on of a electrostatic potential triggers a complex dynamics that includes a free Brownian motion, a reaction kinetic and a stimulated migration before the final adhesion of ions on the surface (electrode). At, when the potential is switched on, the spatial symmetry is broken and a two-stage process is developed. First the ion undergoes a change in its electrochemical character (at some region of the space) and then reacts at some specific points to stick together on the surface. The continuous addition of ions develops a material deposit connected to the current transient signals measured in electrochemical deposition processes. Unlike current models found in the literature, this procedure avoids the computation of the area covered by the diffusion zones, allowing a formalism skill to describe equally well the absorption of ions by channels on electrified surfaces. The theory is applied to the electrodeposition of nickel on n-silicon and explains the failure of standard three-dimensional nucleation models to reproduce situations where interfacial relations control the dynamics. It is shown that, processes dominated by chemical reactions on the electrode can not be classified as possessing an exclusively instantaneous or progressive character, rather, they mix together these two limiting forms of nuclei activation to defines the current transients in its beginning.

Electrocrystallization Nucleation and Growth of NiFe Alloys on Brass Substrate

Abstract:The electrocrystalliztion nucleation and growth process of Ni-Fe alloy was studied using cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The results show that, in the case of high deposition overpotential, the nucleation/growth process of Ni-Fe binary alloy is 3-D instantaneous, and the growth rate of the previously formed nuclei increases with overpotential. However, at low overpotential, no distinguished nucleation current can be observed. Meanwhile, the discrepancy between the experimental non-dimensional variables(I/I-m)(2) and those calculated from the theoretical model was elucidated in the light of the molecular orbital theorem.

Abstract:The nickel electroplating process was investigated by means of electrochemical noise(EN), cyclic voltammetry in conjunction with the scanning electron microscopy(SEM) technique. The results show that, in the experimental conditions and with the increase of current density, the growth mechanism of nickel crystallites changes from 2-D to 3-D with the potential turning point of about -1.15 V, and the potential for the onset of diffusion control of the ensemble nickel electroplating process was about -1.4 V. In the case of activation-control, the two-dimensional (2-D) nucleation/growth process of nickel often results in the electrocrystallization EN features of only slowly small positive potential drift and the corresponding compact layer-by-layer deposit structure, and the maximum relative energy of the RP-EDP (re-plotted relative energy distribution plot), which is obtained from wavelet analysis, defined in the region with smaller scales. While under the diffusion-control, the three-dimensional (3-D) nucleation/growth process of nickel, often results in the electrocrystallization EN features of both the fast positive potential drift and subsequent remarkable negative potential drift and the corresponding dentritic/large conglomerate structure of nickel deposit, and the maximum relative energy of the RP-EDP defined in the region with larger scales. The electroplating time affects the nickel deposit structure mainly through its influence on the growth rate of crystallites and the Ni2+ ions diffusion process around each crystallite.

Abstract:Ni⁻Co alloy and Ni⁻Co⁻Y₂O₃ multiple coatings refined with nano-Y₂O₃ particles were fabricated by ultrasonic-assisted electrochemical deposition in an acid sulfamate bath. Linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), chronoamperometry (CA) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques were applied to investigate the nucleation/growth process of composite coatings in co-deposition. The LSV results indicated that the incorporation of nano-Y₂O₃ particles with the Ni⁻Co matrix shifted the initial deposition potential to a more positive potential and decreased cathodic polarization. For both coatings, the nucleation/growth process approximately agreed with the Scharifker⁻Hill instantaneous nucleation model. Nucleation parameters, including active nucleation sites (N₀) and nucleation rate (A) of the composite, were higher when the measured potential range was between −1.05 V (vs. SCE) and −1.20 V vs. SCE, when compared with the Ni⁻Co alloy, and the observed AFM images of the coatings were in good agreement with the calculated nucleation parameters (using the Marquardt⁻Levenberg algorithm) of experimental curves. EIS testing indicated that the charge transfer resistance of the composite was lower in electrodeposition. The incorporation of nano-Y₂O₃ particles in the matrix changed the preferred orientation of coatings and produced a more uniform and compact deposit layer with finer grains.

Abstract:Electrocatalysts play a critical role in electrochemical catalytic processes. In order to rationally design active and durable electrocatalysts, it is crucial to have a deep understanding on the formation mechanism of the electrocatalysts. With the development of in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques, it is possible to observe nanoscale behaviors in real-time to probe the formation of various electrocatalysts. Here, the nucleation, growth, attachment, diffusion, corrosion and other nanoscale dynamics related to the formation of zero-dimensional (0D), one-dimensional (1D), and two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials are discussed. The current challenges and potential opportunities for in situ techniques towards observation of electrocatalyst formation including high resolution, fast imaging and beam effect are also described.

Abstract:Atomic-level manufacturing is fundamentally concerned with the precise removal, addition, and migration of material at the atomic and close-to-atomic scale (ACS). Tip-based electrochemical deposition, a quintessential ACS electrochemical additive manufacturing technique, offers promising prospects for achieving bottom-up fabrication of metallic micro/nano structures. However, the complex physicochemical reactions involved in electrodes lead to a limited understanding of the mechanisms underlying atomic electrodeposition and structural evolution. For the first time, this study proposes electric double-layer controlled electrochemical kinetics and investigates the effect of direct current (DC) and pulse current (PC) on nickel atomic electrodeposition using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The findings reveal that compared to DC electrodeposition, PC electrodeposition results in more orderly deposition morphology, improved surface smoothness, reduced dislocation density, and lower crystal distortion, with these effects being particularly pronounced under low pulse duty ratio conditions. In addition, the pulse frequency significantly influences the morphology and structure of the deposit. The high pulse frequency yields smoother surfaces with local protrusions, while the low frequency favors the formation of orderly and dense structures excepting slightly increased roughness. This study provides critical insights into understanding the microscopic mechanisms of atomic-scale electrodeposition processes and achieving atomically controlled tip-based electrochemical additive manufacturing of micro/nanodevices.

Abstract:Electrodeposition technology is widely used in the surface treatment of copper foil, and the core of this technology is roughening and curing treatment. During the electrodeposition process, the deposited layers often exhibits some problems, such as coarse grain size, uneven thickness and difficult control of crystal morphology. The magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) effect of magnetic field can obviously control the electrodeposition of Cu and improve the micro-morphology and performance of deposited layers. In this paper, Linear Sweep Voltammetry (LSV), Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) and Chronocoulometry (CC) curves were adopted to investigate the electrochemical behavior of deposited Cu in ultra-high acidity sulfate systems under different magnetic field conditions. The nucleation and growth mechanism were discussed, and the micro-morphology of deposited layers was analyzed. The results show that the electrodeposition of Cu follows the three-dimensional (3D) growth mechanism of progressive nucleation and diffusion control under the static condition, and the deposits appear cylindrical shape formed by spherical agglomerated. The magnetic field significantly improves the mass transfer rate, and the deposited layers will be more uniform and dense, following 3D growth mechanism under the electrochemical control. With the increasing of magnetic field intensity, the nucleation mechanism gradually shifts from progressive to transient nucleation. At the early stage of nucleation, the high-intensity magnetic field can significantly increase the number of grains and refine them, obtaining uniform and dense deposited nanolayers.
