Abstract:Let p be an odd prime. In this paper, analogs of Wilson?s and Wolstenholme?s theorems on the solution sets S+ = {n ? Z* p | n ? a + b ? ab (mod p)} and S? = {n ? Z* p | n ? a ? b ? ab (mod p)} are given, where Z* p denote a reduced residue system modulo p. We also establish congruences about sum and product of the quadratic residues in S+ or in S? modulo p. Finally, we raise a problem on how to solve Hadamard?s conjecture in the last section.

Abstract:We show that a finite coloring of an amenable group contains `many' monochromatic sets of the form $\{x,y,xy,yx\},$ and natural extensions with more variables. This gives the first combinatorial proof and extensions of Bergelson and McCutcheon's non-commutative Schur theorem. Our main new tool is the introduction of what we call `quasirandom colorings,' a condition that is automatically satisfied by colorings of quasirandom groups, and a reduction to this case.

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime. For nontrivial proper subsets $A,B$ of $\mathbb{Z}_p$ of cardinality $s,t$, respectively, we count the number $r(A,B,B)$ of additive triples, namely elements of the form $(a, b, a+b)$ in $A \times B \times B$. For given $s,t$, what is the spectrum of possible values for $r(A,B,B)$? In the special case $A=B$, the additive triple is called a Schur triple. Various authors have given bounds on the number $r(A,A,A)$ of Schur triples, and shown that the lower and upper bound can each be attained by a set $A$ that is an interval of $s$ consecutive elements of $\mathbb{Z}_p$. However, there are values of $p,s$ for which not every value between the lower and upper bounds is attainable. We consider here the general case where $A,B$ can be distinct. We use Pollard's generalization of the Cauchy-Davenport Theorem to derive bounds on the number $r(A,B,B)$ of additive triples. In contrast to the case $A=B$, we show that every value of $r(A,B,B)$ from the lower bound to the upper bound is attainable: each such value can be attained when $B$ is an interval of $t$ consecutive elements of $\mathbb{Z}_p$.

Non-Schur-positivity of chromatic symmetric functions

Abstract:We provide a formula for every Schur coefficient in the chromatic symmetric function of a graph in terms of special rim hook tabloids. This formula is useful in confirming the non-Schur positivity of the chromatic symmetric function of a graph, especially when Stanley's stable partition method does not work. As applications, we determine Schur positive fan graphs and Schur positive complete tripartite graphs. We show that any squid graph obtained by adding $n$ leaves to a common vertex on an $m$-vertex cycle is not Schur positive if $m\ne 2n-1$, and conjecture that neither are the squid graphs with $m=2n-1$.

Abstract:Liu, Pach and Sándor recently characterized all polynomials $p(z)$ such that the equation $x+y=p(z)$ is $2$-Ramsey, that is, any $2$-coloring of $\mathbb{N}$ contains infinitely many monochromatic solutions for $x+y=p(z)$. In this paper, we find asymptotically tight bounds for the following two quantitative questions.

Abstract:Graham, Rödl, and Ruciński originally posed the problem of determining the minimum number of monochromatic Schur triples that must appear in any 2-coloring of the first $n$ integers. This question was subsequently resolved independently by Datskovsky, Schoen, and Robertson and Zeilberger. Here we suggest studying a natural anti-Ramsey variant of this question and establish the first non-trivial bounds by proving that the maximum fraction of Schur triples that can be rainbow in a given $3$-coloring of the first $n$ integers is at least $0.4$ and at most $0.66656$. We conjecture the lower bound to be tight. This question is also motivated by a famous analogous problem in graph theory due to Erdős and Sós regarding the maximum number of rainbow triangles in any $3$-coloring of $K_n$, which was settled by Balogh et al.

Abstract:We first give a proof of the Alon–Tarsi list coloring theorem that differs from Alon and Tarsi's original. We use the ideas from this proof to obtain the following result, which is an additive coloring analog of the Alon–Tarsi Theorem: Let G be a graph and let D be an orientation of G . We introduce a new digraph , such that if the out-degree in D of each vertex v is , and if the number of Eulerian subdigraphs of with an even number of edges differs from the number of Eulerian subdigraphs of with an odd number of edges, then for any assignment of lists L ( v ) of positive integers to the vertices of G , there is an additive coloring of G assigning to each vertex v an element from L ( v ). As an application, we prove an additive list coloring result for tripartite graphs G such that one of the color classes of G contains only vertices whose neighborhoods are complete.

Let $a_n \in \mathbb{Z}$ and the content of $(a_na_0(x))$ is not divisible by any prime less than $2n+c$. For a positive integer $j$, if $u_j$ denotes the product of the odd numbers $\leq j$, then we show that the polynomial $\frac{a_{n}}{u_{2n+c}}\phi(x)^{2n}+\sum\limits_{j=0}^{n-1}a_j(x)\frac{\phi(x)^{2j}}{u_{2j+c}}$ is irreducible over the field $\mathbb{Q}$ of rational numbers. This generalises a well-known result of Schur which states that the polynomial $\sum\limits_{j=0}^{n}a_j\frac{x^{2j}}{u_{2j+c}}$ with $a_j \in \mathbb{Z}$ and $|a_0| = |a_n| = 1$ is irreducible over $\mathbb{Q}$. We illustrate our result through examples.

Schur-positivity for generalized nets

Abstract:A graph is Schur-positive if its chromatic symmetric function expands nonnegatively in the Schur basis. All claw-free graphs are conjectured to be Schur-positive. We introduce a combinatorial object corresponding to a graph G, called a special rim hook G-tabloid, which is a variation on the special rim hook tabloid. These objects can be employed to compute any Schur coefficient of the chromatic symmetric function of a graph. We construct sign-reversing maps on these special rim hook G-tabloids to obtain a recurrence relation for the Schur coefficients of a family of claw-free graphs called generalized nets, then we prove the entire family is Schur-positive. We subsequently determine an analogous recurrence relation for another, similar family of claw-free graphs. Thus, we demonstrate a new method for proving Schur-positivity of chromatic symmetric functions, which has the potential to be applied to make further progress toward the aforementioned conjecture.
