Abstract:Liu, Pach and Sándor recently characterized all polynomials $p(z)$ such that the equation $x+y=p(z)$ is $2$-Ramsey, that is, any $2$-coloring of $\mathbb{N}$ contains infinitely many monochromatic solutions for $x+y=p(z)$. In this paper, we find asymptotically tight bounds for the following two quantitative questions.

Abstract:Answering a conjecture of A. Sisto, J. Sahasrabudhe proved the exponential version of the Schur theorem: for every finite coloring of the naturals, there exists a monochromatic copy of $\{x,y,x^y:x\neq y\},$ which initiates the study of exponential Ramsey theory in arithmetic combinatorics. In this article, We first give two short proofs of the exponential Schur theorem, one using Zorn's lemma and another using $IP_r^\star$ van der Waerden's theorem. Then using the polynomial van der Waerden theorem iteratively we give a proof of the exponential Hindman theorem. Then applying our results we prove for every natural number $m,n$ the equation $x_n^{x_{n-1}^{\cdot^{\cdot^{\cdot^{x_1}}}}}=y_1\cdots y_m$ is partition regular, which can be considered as the exponential version of a more general version of the P. Csikvári, K. Gyarmati, and A. Sárközy conjecture, which was solved by V. Bergelson and N. Hindman independently. As a consequence of our results, we also prove that for every finite partition of $\mathbb{N},$ there exists two different sequences $\langle x_n\rangle_n$ and $\langle y_n\rangle_n$ such that both the multiplicative and exponential version of Hindman theorem generated by these sequences resp. are monochromatic, whereas in the counterpart in the finitary case, J. Sahasrabudhe proved that both sequences are the same. Our result can be considered as an exponential analog to the result of V. Bergelson and N. Hindman. We also prove that a large class of ultrafilters with certain properties do not exist, which could give us direct proof of the exponential Schur theorem. This result can be thought of as partial evidence of the nonexistence of Galvin-Glazer's proof of the exponential Hindman theorem.

An Unsure Note on an Un-Schur Problem

Abstract:Graham, Rödl, and Ruciński originally posed the problem of determining the minimum number of monochromatic Schur triples that must appear in any 2-coloring of the first $n$ integers. This question was subsequently resolved independently by Datskovsky, Schoen, and Robertson and Zeilberger. Here we suggest studying a natural anti-Ramsey variant of this question and establish the first non-trivial bounds by proving that the maximum fraction of Schur triples that can be rainbow in a given $3$-coloring of the first $n$ integers is at least $0.4$ and at most $0.66656$. We conjecture the lower bound to be tight. This question is also motivated by a famous analogous problem in graph theory due to Erdős and Sós regarding the maximum number of rainbow triangles in any $3$-coloring of $K_n$, which was settled by Balogh et al.

Generalized Ramsey numbers at the linear and quadratic thresholds

Abstract:The generalized Ramsey number $f(n, p, q)$ is the smallest number of colors needed to color the edges of the complete graph $K_n$ so that every $p$-clique spans at least $q$ colors. Erdős and Gyárfás showed that $f(n, p, q)$ grows linearly in $n$ when $p$ is fixed and $q=q_{\text{lin}}(p):=\binom p2-p+3$. Similarly they showed that $f(n, p, q)$ is quadratic in $n$ when $p$ is fixed and $q=q_{\text{quad}}(p):=\binom p2-\frac p2+2$. In this note we improve on the known estimates for $f(n, p, q_{\text{lin}})$ and $f(n, p, q_{\text{quad}})$. Our proofs involve establishing a significant strengthening of a previously known connection between $f(n, p, q)$ and another extremal problem first studied by Brown, Erdős and Sós, as well as building on some recent progress on this extremal problem by Delcourt and Postle and by Shangguan. Also, our upper bound on $f(n, p, q_{\text{lin}})$ follows from an application of the recent forbidden submatchings method of Delcourt and Postle.

Abstract:We establish upper bounds on the size of the largest subset of $\{1,2,\dots,N\}$ lacking nonzero differences of the form $h(p_1,\dots,p_{\ell})$, where $h\in \mathbb{Z}[x_1,\dots,x_{\ell}]$ is a fixed polynomial satisfying appropriate conditions and $p_1,\dots,p_{\ell}$ are prime. The bounds are of the same type as the best-known analogs for unrestricted integer inputs, due to Bloom-Maynard and Arala for $\ell=1$, and to the authors for $\ell \geq 2$.

Abstract:In this paper, we first study a new extremal problem recently posed by Conlon and Tyomkyn~(arXiv: <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2002.00921" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2002.00921">2002.00921</a>). Given a graph $H$ and an integer $k\geqslant 2$, let $f_{k}(n,H)$ be the smallest number of colors $c$ such that there exists a proper edge-coloring of the complete graph $K_{n}$ with $c$ colors containing no $k$ vertex-disjoint color-isomorphic copies of $H$. Using algebraic properties of polynomials over finite fields, we give an explicit proper edge-coloring of $K_{n}$ and show that $f_{k}(n, C_{4})=\Theta(n)$ when $k\geqslant 3$ and $n\rightarrow\infty$. The methods we used in the edge-coloring may be of some independent interest. We also consider a related generalized Ramsey problem. For given graphs $G$ and $H,$ let $r(G,H,q)$ be the minimum number of edge-colors (not necessarily proper) of $G$, such that the edges of every copy of $H\subseteq G$ together receive at least $q$ distinct colors. Establishing the relation to the Turán number of specified bipartite graphs, we obtain some general lower bounds for $r(K_{n,n},K_{s,t},q)$ with a broad range of $q$.

On generalized Ramsey numbers in the non-integral regime

Abstract:A $(p,q)$-coloring of a graph $G$ is an edge-coloring of $G$ such that every $p$-clique receives at least $q$ colors. In 1975, Erdős and Shelah introduced the generalized Ramsey number $f(n,p,q)$ which is the minimum number of colors needed in a $(p,q)$-coloring of $K_n$. In 1997, Erdős and Gyárfás showed that $f(n,p,q)$ is at most a constant times $n^{\frac{p-2}{\binom{p}{2} - q + 1}}$. Very recently the first author, Dudek, and English improved this bound by a factor of $\log n^{\frac{-1}{\binom{p}{2} - q + 1}} $ for all $q \le \frac{p^2 - 26p + 55}{4}$, and they ask if this improvement could hold for a wider range of $q$. We answer this in the affirmative for the entire non-integral regime, that is, for all integers $p, q$ with $p-2$ not divisible by $\binom{p}{2} - q + 1$. Furthermore, we provide a simultaneous three-way generalization as follows: where $p$-clique is replaced by any fixed graph $F$ (with $|V(F)|-2$ not divisible by $|E(F)| - q + 1$); to list coloring; and to $k$-uniform hypergraphs. Our results are a new application of the Forbidden Submatching Method of the second and fourth authors.

A Polynomial Method for Counting Colorings of Sparse Graphs

Abstract:The notion of $S$-labeling of graphs, where $S$ is a subset of a symmetric group, was introduced in 2019 by Jin, Wong, and Zhu. This notion provides the framework for a common generalization of various well studied notions of graph coloring, including classical coloring, signed $k$-coloring, signed $\mathbb{Z}_k$-coloring, DP (or correspondence) coloring, group coloring, and coloring of gained graphs. In this paper, we present a unified and simple polynomial method for giving exponential lower bounds on the number of colorings of an $S$-labeled graph for all such $S$. This algebraic technique allows us to prove new lower bounds on the number of colorings of any $S$-labeling of graphs satisfying certain sparsity conditions. We also investigate how the structure of $S$ can be exploited to improve the applicability of these bounds. Our results give new lower bounds on the number of DP-colorings, and consequently the number of all types of colorings listed above. This includes the chromatic polynomial and the number of list colorings of families of planar graphs, and the number of colorings of signed graphs. These enumerative bounds improve previously known results or are the first such known results.

Erdős-Hajnal problems for posets

Abstract:We say that a poset $(Q,\le_{Q})$ contains an induced copy of a poset $(P,\le_P)$, if there is an injective function $\phi\colon P\to Q$ such that for every two $X,Y\in P$, $X\le_P Y$ if and only if $\phi(X)\le_Q \phi(Y)$. Given a fixed $2$-coloring $c$ of a poset $P$, the poset Erdős-Hajnal number of this colored poset is the minimum integer $N$ such that every $2$-coloring of the Boolean lattice $Q_N$ contains an induced copy of $P$ colored as in $c$, or a monochromatic induced copy of $Q_n$. We present bounds on the poset Erdős-Hajnal number of general colored posets, antichains, chains, and small Boolean lattices. Let the poset Ramsey number $R(Q_n,Q_n)$ be the minimal $N$ such that every $2$-coloring of $Q_N$ contains a monochromatic induced copy of $Q_n$. As a corollary, we show that $R(Q_n,Q_n)> 2.24n$, improving on the best known lower bound $2n+1$ by Cox and Stolee.

Abstract:We study two related problems concerning the number of homogeneous subsets of given size in graphs that go back to questions of Erdős. Most notably, we improve the upper bounds on the Ramsey multiplicity of and and settle the minimum number of independent sets of size 4 in graphs with clique number at most 4. Motivated by the elusiveness of the symmetric Ramsey multiplicity problem, we also introduce an off-diagonal variant and obtain tight results when counting monochromatic or in only one of the colors and triangles in the other. The extremal constructions for each problem turn out to be blow-ups of a graph of constant size and were found through search heuristics. They are complemented by lower bounds established using flag algebras, resulting in a fully computer-assisted approach. For some of our theorems we can also derive that the extremal construction is stable in a very strong sense. More broadly, these problems lead us to the study of the region of possible pairs of clique and independent set densities that can be realized as the limit of some sequence of graphs.

Abstract:Wan and Zhang (2021) obtained a nontrivial lower bound for the number of zeros of complete symmetric polynomials over finite fields, and proposed a problem whether their bound can be improved. In this paper, the author improves Wan-Zhang's bound from three aspects. The proposed results are based on the estimates related to the number of certain permutations and the value sets of non-permutation polynomials associated to the complete symmetric polynomial. And the author believes that there are still possibilities to improve the bounds and hence Wan-Zhang's bound.

Abstract:We study density and partition properties of polynomial equations in prime variables. We consider equations of the form $a_1h(x_1) + \cdots + a_sh(x_s)=b$, where the $a_i$ and $b$ are fixed coefficients, and $h$ is an arbitrary integer polynomial of degree $d$. Provided there are at least $(1+o(1))d^2$ variables, we establish necessary and sufficient criteria for this equation to have a monochromatic non-constant solution with respect to any finite colouring of the prime numbers. We similarly characterise when such equations admit solutions over any set of primes with positive relative upper density. In both cases, we obtain counting results which provide asymptotically sharp lower bounds for the number of monochromatic or dense solutions in primes. Our main new ingredient is a uniform lower bound on the cardinality of a prime polynomial Bohr set.

Optimization Tools for Computing Colorings of $[1,\cdots ,n]$ with Few Monochromatic Solutions on $3$-variable Linear Equations

Abstract:A famous result in arithmetic Ramsey theory says that for many linear homogeneous equations $E$ there is a threshold value $R_k(E)$ (the Rado number of $E$) such that for any $k$-coloring of the integers in the interval $[1,n]$, with $n \ge R_k(E)$, there exists at least one monochromatic solution. But one can further ask, how many monochromatic solutions is the minimum possible in terms of $n$? Several authors have estimated this function before, here we offer new tools from integer and semidefinite optimization that help find either optimal or near optimal 2-colorings minimizing the number of monochromatic solutions of several families of 3-variable non-regular homogeneous linear equations. In the last part of the paper we further extend to three and more colors for the Schur equation, improving earlier work.

Abstract:In 1969, Erdős and Sós initiated the study of the Ramsey-Turán type problems: Determine the maximum number of edges of an $n$-vertex $K_{p+1}$-free graph without large independent set. Given integers $p, q\ge2$, we say that a graph $G$ is $(K_p,K_q)$-free if there exists a red/blue edge coloring of $G$ such that it contains neither a red $K_p$ nor a blue $K_q$. Fix a function $f( n )$, the Ramsey-Turán number $RT( {n,p,q,f( n ))} $ is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $(K_p,K_q)$-free graph with independence number at most $f( n )$. For any $\delta>0$, let $\rho (p, q,\delta ) = \mathop {\lim }\limits_{n \to \infty } \frac{RT(n,p, q,\delta n)}{n^2}$. Kim, Kim and Liu (2019) determined the value of $\rho(3,p,\delta)$ for $p=3,4,5$ and sufficiently small $\delta>0$. Moreover, they showed $\rho(3,6,\delta)\ge \frac{5}{12}+\frac{\delta}{2}+2\delta^2$ from a skilful construction and conjectured the equality holds for sufficiently small $\delta>0$. In this paper, we obtain $\rho(3,6,\delta)\le\frac{5}{12} + \frac{\delta }{2}+ 2.1025\delta ^2$ for sufficiently small $\delta>0$, which is pretty close to solving the conjecture. The key step of the proof is to establish a stability lemma of the $n$-vertex graph that is $(K_3,K_6)$-free with independence number $\delta n$.

Multicolor Ramsey numbers on stars versus pat

Abstract:For given simple graphs $H_1,H_2,\dots,H_c$, the multicolor Ramsey number $R(H_1,H_2,\dots,H_c)$ is defined as the smallest positive integer $n$ such that for an arbitrary edge-decomposition $\{G_i\}^c_{i=1}$ of the complete graph $K_n$, at least one $G_i$ has a subgraph isomorphic to $H_i$. Let $m,n_1,n_2,\dots,n_c$ be positive integers and $\Sigma=\sum_{i=1}^{c}(n_i-1)$. Some bounds and exact values of $R(K_{1,n_1},\dots,K_{1,n_c},P_m)$ have been obtained in literature. Wang (Graphs Combin., 2020) conjectured that if $\Sigma\not\equiv 0\pmod{m-1}$ and $\Sigma+1\ge (m-3)^2$, then $R(K_{1,n_1},\ldots, K_{1,n_c}, P_m)=\Sigma+m-1.$ In this note, we give a new lower bound and some exact values of $R(K_{1,n_1},\dots,K_{1,n_c},P_m)$ when $m\leq\Sigma$, $\Sigma\equiv k\pmod{m-1}$, and $2\leq k \leq m-2$. These results partially confirm Wang's conjecture.

Abstract:For k given graphs H 1 , … , H k, k ≥ 2, the k -color Ramsey number, denoted by R ( H 1 , … , H k ), is the smallest integer N such that if we arbitrarily color the edges of a complete graph of order N with k colors, then it always contains a monochromatic copy of H i colored with i , for some 1 ≤ i ≤ k. Let C m be a cycle of length m , K 1 , n a star of order n + 1 and W n a wheel of order n + 1. In this paper, by using algebraic and probabilistic methods, we first give two lower bounds for ( k + 1 )-color Ramsey number R ( C 4 , … , C 4 , K 1 , n ) for some special n , which shows the upper bound due to Zhang et al. (2019) is tight in some sense, and then establish a general lower bound for R ( C 4 , … , C 4 , K 1 , n ) in terms of n and k , which extends the classical result of Burr et al. (1989). Moreover, we show that R ( C 4 , … , C 4 , K 1 , n ) = R ( C 4 , … , C 4 , W n ) for sufficiently large n .

Abstract:In this thesis, we present quantitative Ramsey-type results in the setting of finite sets that are equipped with a partial order, so-called posets. A prominent example of a poset is the Boolean lattice $Q_n$, which consists of all subsets of $\{1,\dots,n\}$, ordered by inclusion. For posets $P$ and $Q$, the poset Ramsey number $R(P,Q)$ is the smallest $N$ such that no matter how the elements of $Q_N$ are colored in blue and red, there is either an induced subposet isomorphic to $P$ in which every element is colored blue, or an induced subposet isomorphic to $Q$ in which every element is colored red. The central focus of this thesis is to investigate $R(P,Q_n)$, where $P$ is fixed and $n$ grows large. Our results contribute to an active area of discrete mathematics, which studies the existence of large homogeneous substructures in host structures with local constraints, introduced for graphs by Erdős and Hajnal. We provide an asymptotically tight bound on $R(P,Q_n)$ for $P$ from several classes of posets, and show a dichotomy in the asymptotic behavior of $R(P,Q_n)$, depending on whether $P$ contains a subposet isomorphic to one of two specific posets. A fundamental question in the study of poset Ramsey numbers is to determine the asymptotic behavior of $R(Q_n,Q_n)$ for large $n$. In this dissertation, we present improvements on the known lower and upper bound on $R(Q_n,Q_n)$. Moreover, we explore variations of the poset Ramsey setting, including Erdős-Hajnal-type questions when the small forbidden poset has a non-monochromatic color pattern, and so-called weak poset Ramsey numbers, which are concerned with non-induced subposets.

Abstract:The study of ordered Ramsey numbers of monotone paths for graphs and hypergraphs has a long history, going back to the celebrated work by Erdős and Szekeres in the early days of Ramsey theory. In this paper we obtain several results in this area, establishing two conjectures of Mubayi and Suk and improving bounds due to Balko, Cibulka, Král and Kynčl. We also obtain a color-monotone version of the well-known Canonical Ramsey Theorem of Erdős and Rado, which could be of independent interest.

Abstract:Let R(G) be the least integer p such that for all bicolorings of the edges of complete graph Kp, at least one of the monochromatic subgraphs contains a copy of G.
