Abstract:The $r$-colour Ramsey number $R_r(k)$ is the minimum $n \in \mathbb{N}$ such that every $r$-colouring of the edges of the complete graph $K_n$ on $n$ vertices contains a monochromatic copy of $K_k$. We prove, for each fixed $r \geqslant 2$, that $$R_r(k) \leqslant e^{-\delta k} r^{rk}$$ for some constant $\delta = \delta(r) > 0$ and all sufficiently large $k \in \mathbb{N}$. For each $r \geqslant 3$, this is the first exponential improvement over the upper bound of Erdős and Szekeres from 1935. In the case $r = 2$, it gives a different (and significantly shorter) proof of a recent result of Campos, Griffiths, Morris and Sahasrabudhe.

Abstract:We improve upon the lower bound for 3-colour hypergraph Ramsey numbers, showing, in the 3-uniform case, that \[r_3 (l,l,l) \geq 2^{l^{c \log \log l}}.\] The old bound, due to Erdős and Hajnal, was \[r_3 (l,l,l) \geq 2^{c l^2 \log^2 l}.\]

Finite Fields and Their Applications

Abstract:For k given graphs H 1 , … , H k, k ≥ 2, the k -color Ramsey number, denoted by R ( H 1 , … , H k ), is the smallest integer N such that if we arbitrarily color the edges of a complete graph of order N with k colors, then it always contains a monochromatic copy of H i colored with i , for some 1 ≤ i ≤ k. Let C m be a cycle of length m , K 1 , n a star of order n + 1 and W n a wheel of order n + 1. In this paper, by using algebraic and probabilistic methods, we first give two lower bounds for ( k + 1 )-color Ramsey number R ( C 4 , … , C 4 , K 1 , n ) for some special n , which shows the upper bound due to Zhang et al. (2019) is tight in some sense, and then establish a general lower bound for R ( C 4 , … , C 4 , K 1 , n ) in terms of n and k , which extends the classical result of Burr et al. (1989). Moreover, we show that R ( C 4 , … , C 4 , K 1 , n ) = R ( C 4 , … , C 4 , W n ) for sufficiently large n .
Lower Bounds for Multicolor Star-Critical Ramsey Numbers

Abstract:The star-critical Ramsey number is a refinement of the concept of a Ramsey number. In this paper, we give equivalent criteria for which the star-critical Ramsey number vanishes. Next, we provide a new general lower bound for multicolor star-critical Ramsey numbers whenever it does not vanish. As an application, we evaluate $r_*(P_k, P_3, P_3)$, where $P_n$ is a path of order $n$. In the process of proving these results, we also show that $r_*(C_5, P_3)=3$, where $C_5$ is a cycle of order $5$.

Multicolor Ramsey numbers on stars versus pat

Abstract:For given simple graphs $H_1,H_2,\dots,H_c$, the multicolor Ramsey number $R(H_1,H_2,\dots,H_c)$ is defined as the smallest positive integer $n$ such that for an arbitrary edge-decomposition $\{G_i\}^c_{i=1}$ of the complete graph $K_n$, at least one $G_i$ has a subgraph isomorphic to $H_i$. Let $m,n_1,n_2,\dots,n_c$ be positive integers and $\Sigma=\sum_{i=1}^{c}(n_i-1)$. Some bounds and exact values of $R(K_{1,n_1},\dots,K_{1,n_c},P_m)$ have been obtained in literature. Wang (Graphs Combin., 2020) conjectured that if $\Sigma\not\equiv 0\pmod{m-1}$ and $\Sigma+1\ge (m-3)^2$, then $R(K_{1,n_1},\ldots, K_{1,n_c}, P_m)=\Sigma+m-1.$ In this note, we give a new lower bound and some exact values of $R(K_{1,n_1},\dots,K_{1,n_c},P_m)$ when $m\leq\Sigma$, $\Sigma\equiv k\pmod{m-1}$, and $2\leq k \leq m-2$. These results partially confirm Wang's conjecture.

Some remarks on off-diagonal Ramsey numbers for vector spaces over $\mathbb{F}_{2}$

Abstract:For every positive integer $d$, we show that there must exist an absolute constant $c > 0$ such that the following holds: for any integer $n \geq cd^{7}$ and any red-blue coloring of the one-dimensional subspaces of $\mathbb{F}_{2}^{n}$, there must exist either a $d$-dimensional subspace for which all of its one-dimensional subspaces get colored red or a $2$-dimensional subspace for which all of its one-dimensional subspaces get colored blue. This answers recent questions of Nelson and Nomoto, and confirms that for any even plane binary matroid $N$, the class of $N$-free, claw-free binary matroids is polynomially $\chi$-bounded. Our argument will proceed via a reduction to a well-studied additive combinatorics problem, originally posed by Green: given a set $A \subset \mathbb{F}_{2}^{n}$ with density $\alpha \in [0,1]$, what is the largest subspace that we can find in $A+A$? Our main contribution to the story is a new result for this problem in the regime where $1/\alpha$ is large with respect to $n$, which utilizes ideas from the recent breakthrough paper of Kelley and Meka on sets of integers without three-term arithmetic progressions.

A new lower bound for the multicolor Ramsey number $r_k(K_{2, t + 1})$

Abstract:In this short note, we provide a new infinite family of $K_{2, t+1}$-free graphs for each prime power $t$. Using these graphs, we show that it is possible to partition the edges of $K_n$ into parts, such that each part is isomorphic to our $K_{2, t+1}$-free graph. This yields an improved lower bound to the multicolor Ramsey number $r_k(K_{2, t+1})$ when $k$ and $t$ are powers of the same prime. For these values of $k$ and $t$, our coloring implies that $$ tk^2 + 1 \leq r_k(K_{2, t+1}) \leq tk^2 + k + 2. $$ where the upper bound is due to Chung and Graham.

Ramsey multiplicity and the Turán coloring

Abstract:Extending an earlier conjecture of Erdős, Burr and Rosta conjectured that among all two-colorings of the edges of a complete graph, the uniformly random coloring asymptotically minimizes the number of monochromatic copies of any fixed graph $H$. This conjecture was disproved independently by Sidorenko and Thomason. The first author later found quantitatively stronger counterexamples, using the Turán coloring, in which one of the two colors spans a balanced complete multipartite graph. We prove that the Turán coloring is extremal for an infinite family of graphs, and that it is the unique extremal coloring. This yields the first determination of the Ramsey multiplicity constant of a graph for which the Burr--Rosta conjecture fails. We also prove an analogous three-color result. In this case, our result is conditional on a certain natural conjecture on the behavior of two-color Ramsey numbers.

Abstract:For a given graph H , the Ramsey number r ( H ) is the minimum N such that any 2-edge-coloring of the complete graph K N yields a monochromatic copy of H . Given a positive integer n , a fan F n is a graph formed by n triangles that share one common vertex. We show that 9 n ∕ 2 − 5 ≤ r ( F n ) ≤ 11 n ∕ 2 + 6 for any n . This improves previous best bounds r ( F n ) ≤ 6 n of Lin and Li and r ( F n ) ≥ 4 n + 2 of Zhang, Broersma and Chen.

Generalized Ramsey numbers at the linear and quadratic thresholds

Abstract:The generalized Ramsey number $f(n, p, q)$ is the smallest number of colors needed to color the edges of the complete graph $K_n$ so that every $p$-clique spans at least $q$ colors. Erdős and Gyárfás showed that $f(n, p, q)$ grows linearly in $n$ when $p$ is fixed and $q=q_{\text{lin}}(p):=\binom p2-p+3$. Similarly they showed that $f(n, p, q)$ is quadratic in $n$ when $p$ is fixed and $q=q_{\text{quad}}(p):=\binom p2-\frac p2+2$. In this note we improve on the known estimates for $f(n, p, q_{\text{lin}})$ and $f(n, p, q_{\text{quad}})$. Our proofs involve establishing a significant strengthening of a previously known connection between $f(n, p, q)$ and another extremal problem first studied by Brown, Erdős and Sós, as well as building on some recent progress on this extremal problem by Delcourt and Postle and by Shangguan. Also, our upper bound on $f(n, p, q_{\text{lin}})$ follows from an application of the recent forbidden submatchings method of Delcourt and Postle.

Abstract:For positive integers n, r, s with r > s, the set-coloring Ramsey number R(n; r, s) is the minimum N such that if every edge of the complete graph K N receives a set of s colors from a palette of r colors, then there is guaranteed to be a monochromatic clique on n vertices, that is, a subset of n vertices where all of the edges between them receive a common color. In particular, the case s = 1 corresponds to the classical multicolor Ramsey number. We prove general upper and lower bounds on R(n; r, s) which imply that R(n; r, s) = 2 Θ(nr) if s/r is bounded away from 0 and 1. The upper bound extends an old result of Erdős and Szemerédi, who treated the case s = r − 1, while the lower bound exploits a connection to error-correcting codes. We also study the analogous problem for hypergraphs.

On generalized Ramsey numbers in the non-integral regime

Abstract:A $(p,q)$-coloring of a graph $G$ is an edge-coloring of $G$ such that every $p$-clique receives at least $q$ colors. In 1975, Erdős and Shelah introduced the generalized Ramsey number $f(n,p,q)$ which is the minimum number of colors needed in a $(p,q)$-coloring of $K_n$. In 1997, Erdős and Gyárfás showed that $f(n,p,q)$ is at most a constant times $n^{\frac{p-2}{\binom{p}{2} - q + 1}}$. Very recently the first author, Dudek, and English improved this bound by a factor of $\log n^{\frac{-1}{\binom{p}{2} - q + 1}} $ for all $q \le \frac{p^2 - 26p + 55}{4}$, and they ask if this improvement could hold for a wider range of $q$. We answer this in the affirmative for the entire non-integral regime, that is, for all integers $p, q$ with $p-2$ not divisible by $\binom{p}{2} - q + 1$. Furthermore, we provide a simultaneous three-way generalization as follows: where $p$-clique is replaced by any fixed graph $F$ (with $|V(F)|-2$ not divisible by $|E(F)| - q + 1$); to list coloring; and to $k$-uniform hypergraphs. Our results are a new application of the Forbidden Submatching Method of the second and fourth authors.

Abstract:In a recent breakthrough Campos, Griffiths, Morris and Sahasrabudhe obtained the first exponential improvement of the upper bound on the diagonal Ramsey numbers since 1935. We shorten their proof, replacing the underlying book algorithm with a simple inductive statement. This modification allows us - to give a very short proof of an improved upper bound on the off-diagonal Ramsey numbers, which extends to the multicolor setting, and - to clarify the dependence of the bounds on underlying parameters and optimize these parameters, obtaining, in particular, an upper bound $$R(k,k) \leq (3.8)^{k+o(k)}$$ on the diagonal Ramsey numbers.

Abstract:Given a family of graphs $\mathcal{F}$ and an integer $r$, we say that a graph is $r$-Ramsey for $\mathcal{F}$ if any $r$-colouring of its edges admits a monochromatic copy of a graph from $\mathcal{F}$. The threshold for the classic Ramsey property in the binomial random graph, where $\mathcal{F}$ consists of one graph, was located in the celebrated work of Rödl and Ruciński. In this paper, we offer a twofold generalisation to the Rödl--Ruciński theorem. First, we show that the list-colouring version of the property has the same threshold. Second, we extend this result to finite families $\mathcal{F}$, where the threshold statements might also diverge. This also confirms further special cases of the Kohayakawa--Kreuter conjecture. Along the way, we supply a short(-ish), self-contained proof of the $0$-statement of the Rödl--Ruciński theorem.

A Ramsey theorem for the reals

Abstract:We prove that for every colouring of pairs of reals with finitely-many colours, there is a set homeomorphic to the rationals which takes no more than two colours. This was conjectured by Galvin in 1970, and a colouring of Sierpi{ń}ski from 1933 witnesses that the number of colours cannot be reduced to one. Previously in 1985 Shelah had shown that a stronger statement is consistent with a forcing construction assuming the existence of large cardinals. Then in 2018 Raghavan and Todorčević had proved it assuming the existence of large cardinals. We prove it in $ZFC$. In fact Raghavan and Todorčević proved, assuming more large cardinals, a similar result for a large class of topological spaces. We prove this also, again in $ZFC$.

Abstract:We study two related problems concerning the number of homogeneous subsets of given size in graphs that go back to questions of Erdős. Most notably, we improve the upper bounds on the Ramsey multiplicity of and and settle the minimum number of independent sets of size 4 in graphs with clique number at most 4. Motivated by the elusiveness of the symmetric Ramsey multiplicity problem, we also introduce an off-diagonal variant and obtain tight results when counting monochromatic or in only one of the colors and triangles in the other. The extremal constructions for each problem turn out to be blow-ups of a graph of constant size and were found through search heuristics. They are complemented by lower bounds established using flag algebras, resulting in a fully computer-assisted approach. For some of our theorems we can also derive that the extremal construction is stable in a very strong sense. More broadly, these problems lead us to the study of the region of possible pairs of clique and independent set densities that can be realized as the limit of some sequence of graphs.

On a Problem of Ramsey Theory

Abstract:In 1955, Greenwood and Gleason showed that the Ramsey number R(3, 3, 3) = 17 by constructing an edge-chromatic graph on 16 vertices in three colors with no triangles. Their technique employed finite fields. This same result was obtained later by using another technique. In this article, we examine the complete graph on 17 vertices, K17, which can be represented as a regular polygon of 17 sides with all its diagonals. We color each edge of K17 with one of the three colors, blue, red or yellow. The graph thus obtained is called complete trichromatic graph K17^(3) (the superscript determines the number of colors). A triangle contained in graph K17^(3) with edges colored with one and only one color is called monochromatic. It has been shown that for any coloring of the K17^(3) edges, K17^(3) contains at least one monochromatic triangle. This article examines the problem of determining the minimum number of monochromatic triangles with the same color contained in K17^(3).
