Abstract:We have measured Rayleigh wave phase velocities of the Ordos Block and its southern and western boundary areas and inverted these data to describe the upper mantle structure. The Ordos Block was found to be characterized by distinctly high seismic velocities at depths commonly associated with a low velocity asthenosphere. To the south, abnormally slow velocity anomalies appeared in the Weihe rift, probably indicating subsolidus grain-boundary weakening effect under high temperatures near solidus instead of partial melt in the asthenosphere. An intermediate seismic velocity structure was observed beneath the Northern Qinling orogen (NQL) to the south of the Weihe rift. A thin, high velocity lid, which was probably a cratonic relic, was found under the Haiyuan arcuate tectonic region (HATR) west of the Ordos Block. A thick lithosphere was present beneath the Ordos Block (>200km) and the NQL (~140km), while a thinner lithosphere (~100km) was found beneath the HATR and the Weihe rift. The observed structural differences were likely associated with different lithospheric tectonics in the study region. Whereas the Weihe rift and the HATR had been strongly affected by Cenozoic lithospheric modification and thinning, the Ordos Block and the NQL appeared to have been much less influenced. Combined with previous studies, our results suggested that the far-field effect of the Indo–Asia collision may have played an important role in the unique lithospheric process in the study region, such as the extension of the Weihe rift, the preservation of a cratonic relic under the HATR, and the localized intense lithospheric modification of these two regions. The substantial variations of deep structure and thus contrasting rheological properties between the Ordos Block and the surrounding notable seismic belts (the HATR and Weihe rift) may be a candidate mechanism for the contrasting seismicity of the region. The lateral variations in the lithospheric structure estimated here generally agreed with changes in upper mantle deformation patterns previously derived from SKS splitting measurements.

Lithospheric electrical characteristics in South China and its geodynamic implication

Abstract:The lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary (LAB) is one of the main boundary of the earth's interior. Magnetotelluric (MT) sounding is the most effective method for investigation of the electrical structure of the crust and upper mantle of the earth. LAB is feasibly detectable by using long-period MT data. The high-quality MT data had been acquired on grid of 40 X 40 in South China under SinoProbe-01-03 project. We inverted the average apparent resistivity calculated from the off-diagonal elements by using one-dimension Occam's method. We interpret the recovered 1D geoelectric structure by classifying the lithosphere of the South China as five different types: (1) the craton type, the representive data are from Shaoyang (Hunan Province) and Shibing (Guizhou Province) sites; (2) the tectonic boundary type, the representive data are from Dazhou and Pengzhou (Sichuan Province) as well as Jingmen (Hubei Province) sites; (3) the moderate reformed lithosphere type, the representive data are from Huzhou (Zhejiang Province) and Yunfu (Guangdong Province) sites; (4) the strong reformed lithosphere type, the representive data are from Ganzhou (Jiangxi Province) and Jieyang (Guangdong Province) as well as Xiapu (Fujian Province) sites; (5) the orogenic belt type, the representive data is from Yingshan ( Hubei Province) site. The lithospheric thicknesses of the South China vary from 60 km to 145 km except Shaoyang, Shibing and Jieyang sites. Our results show that the lithosphere of the South China is thinner in the south and north regions, and thicker in the middle region; while the lithosphere of the South China is unevenly reformed in the east region. The results in present study are different from that of the previously published literatures, in most of which indicated that the significant characteristic of the lithospheric thickness of the South China is thinning from west to east. Our results support that the lithosphere of the South China is mechanically strong and hence stable. The tectonic extension occurred since the Late Mesozoic may limitedly reform the lithosphere of the South China, and the most possible reforming mechanism is by hot asthenospheric materials diapiring and underplating.

Continental-scale deep electrical resistivity structure beneath China

Abstract:Electrical resistivity structure in the deep Earth can provide important information and constraints on regional geodynamics, especially in regions with complex tectonics and geodynamical processes. In this study, we image the electrical resistivity structure in the depth range of 350–1200 km beneath China by inverting the frequency-dependent ratios of geomagnetic field components at a relatively dense network of geomagnetic observatories. Very long time series of hourly mean values of the three-component geomagnetic field from 45 geomagnetic observatories are collected and processed to derive robust ratios of the geomagnetic components, which are then converted to the apparent resistivities and impedance phases in the period range of 5.3–113.8 days and used in 1-D Occam inversion with smoothing constraint and the ρ + method to obtain the electrical resistivity profiles and delta function models at individual observatories. 1-D electrical resistivity models suggest that low electrical resistivity structure exists in the mantle transition zone beneath eastern China. High water content in the mantle minerals due to the subduction of seismically fast Pacific slab is proposed as the main reason for the low electrical resistivity beneath eastern China. Our results provide further evidence that the western front of the subducting Pacific slab in the mantle transition zone roughly coincides with the abrupt change in the surface topography in eastern China.

Deep electrical structure from the southern margin of the North China Craton to the Cathaysia block in eastern China

Abstract:Two magnetotelluric profiles have been deployed between the southern margin of the North China Craton and the Cathaysia Block. The electrical structure models along these two profiles with a depth range of 0 similar to 100 km were obtained by two-dimensional (Nonlinear Conjugate Gradient) NLCG inversion. Combining with the geological and geophysical data of the study area, we thoroughly analyzed the characteristics of the electrical resistivity structure and the geological implications for the crust and upper mantle evolution. The results revealed that : (1) The low resistivity anomaly in the Jiangshan-Shaoxing fault zone may be caused by the upwelling of deep hot mantle. (2) In the southern margin of the North China Craton, the middle and lower crust and the top of the upper mantle show low resistivity anomalies, and there may exist a large area of weak thin layer or local melts. In the Middle and Lower Reaches of the Yangtze River Metallogenic Belt, there is a high-conductivity layer that may be caused by aqueous fluids. (3) The resistive crust of the Cathaysia Block is closely related to the tectonomagmatic activity of the Late Mesozoic. And the high resistivity anomaly in the upper mantle of the Cathaysia Block may imply basaltic magmatism. The westward subduction of the paleo-Pacific plate is the dynamic background of the late Mesozoic tectonic activity of the Cathaysian block.
Deep electrical structures of Qinzhou-Fangcheng Junction Zone in Guangxi and seismogenic environment of the 1936 Lingshan M63⁄4 earthquake

Abstract:The tectonic position of the southwest section of the Qinzhou Bay-Hangzhou Bay Tectonic Junction Zone (QHTJZ) can be determined by examining the Qinzhou-Fangcheng Junction Zone (QFJZ) in Guangxi. This zone is significant because it was the location of the largest earthquake ever recorded in the inland region of South China, specifically the 1936 Lingshan M 63⁄4 earthquake in Guangxi. Therefore, this region serves as an optimal location for researching the origins of intraplate earthquakes in South China. This study presents a display of a broadband magnetotelluric (MT) prospecting profile that traverses the Guangxi QFJZ and the Lingshan earthquake zone, extending from the northwest (NW) to the southeast (SE). A resistivity structure model was generated using three-dimensional (3D) inversion technology along the profile. The main faults in QFJZ were analyzed in terms of their deep extension forms and tectonic attributes. This analysis was performed by integrating the results obtained from geology, gravity, wave velocity ratio, Global Position System (GPS), and geothermal flow. The results showed that (1) the Dongzhong-Xiaodong fault (DXf), the eastern Fangcheng-Lingshan fault (FLf2), and the eastern Hepu-Beiliu fault (HBf2) were all trans-crustal deep faults, and crust-mantle ductile shear zones developed in the deep part. Two electrical boundary zones, DXf and HBf2, were identified. DXf inclined towards the northwest, while HBf2 inclined towards the southeast. The Fangcheng-Lingshan fault (FLf) exhibits a tectonic style resembling a "flower" shape in the upper crust. In the deeper section, it is characterized by an electrical boundary zone that gradually slopes towards the southeast direction. (2) The Hunan-Guangxi Passive Continental Margin (HGPCM) on the NW side of DXf had a stratified resistivity structure and relatively stable Bouguer gravity anomalies, which conformed to the quasi-craton tectonic attribute of the local failure at the southeastern margin of the Yangtze Block (YB). The southeastern side of this block is marked by the presence of the QFJZ and Yunkai Magmatic Arc (YKMA). These areas exhibit varying Bouguer gravity anomalies, indicating a combination of high and low resistivity in their electrical structures. This suggests that this zone has undergone multiple stages of structural evolution and transformation. The giant high-resistivity body under the Qinzhou-Fangcheng Remnant Ocean Basin (QFROB) might be the trace left by the extinction of the South China Ocean and the collision orogeny between YB and the Cathaysian Block (CB). The presence of sub-low-resistivity layers in the middle-lower crust between the Liuwandashan Magmatic Arc (LMA) and YKMA indicates that this particular zone is being influenced from a distance by magmatic activities originating from the Leiqiong mantle. (3) The focal area of the 1936 Lingshan earthquake was located in the brittle high-resistivity body with a low strain rate. Under the coupling action of NWW-SEE regional tectonic stress and deep thermodynamic force, the brittle high-resistivity body in the upper crust became the main body for accumulating the tectonic stress. The Lingshan earthquake occurred due to the dextral strike-slip fracture instability of FLf2, a rock layer with slightly lower strength in the sub-high-resistivity zone. This instability was triggered when the accumulated stress reached the ultimate rock strength. The unveiling of the seismogenic model of the Lingshan earthquake, as presented in this study, holds significant scientific importance in comprehending the factors contributing to intraplate earthquakes in the South China region.

Continental-Scale Investigation of Underlying Electrical Conductivity Structure in Mainland China Using Geomagnetic Data

Abstract:The magnetotelluric method has been used to fully study regional electrical conductivity structures in different areas in mainland China; however, there is a lack of overall understanding of the electrical structure distribution. A novel insight for the study of continental-scale underlying conductivity structures was proposed in this work via geomagnetic data recorded by permanent stations. To study the underlying electrical structure distribution in mainland China, we mapped the conductors and resistors at a depth range of 4–100 km beneath mainland China using Parkinson vectors through magnetic transfer function. Three-component geomagnetic data within a low artificial disturbance period (local time 23:00–05:00) from 98 stations in 2019 were collected and processed to derive Parkinson vectors in the frequency band of 0.001–0.5 Hz. The distribution of subsurface electrical structures at distinct depths was constructed using corresponding frequency through the skin depth. We compare the consistent results herein with previous magnetotelluric studies, which indicated the reliability of our method. Combining previous multiple geophysical inversion results, we found that large-scale plastic bodies are distributed along the east of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and extend to the west of Yunnan. In central mainland China, the areas are mainly highly resistive, indicating that the structures are overall rigid. In north China, there exist high-low-high-low conductive structures from west to east. The separate high- and low-conductive electrical bodies in the North China Craton provide geophysical evidence that the Craton is composed of multiple blocks. The distributions of the underlying electrical structures in this work can provide an overall perspective for studying tectonic evolution and geodynamics in mainland China.

Abstract:The eastern segment of the Qilian orogenic belt, composed of the Linxia block and the Longzhong block, is located at the northeastern margin of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. The area has experienced multiple tectonic events, such as the closure of the Qilian Ocean, the convergence of the North China block and the Qilian terrane, and the collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates, forming a complex tectonic framework. To investigate the geological evolution of the area and the current location of the suture between the plates, we performed three-dimensional inversion of magnetotelluric data acquired along two profiles in the eastern segment of the Qilian orogenic belt using a nonlinear conjugate gradient algorithm to obtain electrical resistivity structure models to 60-km depth. The results include three key findings. <a class="workspace-trigger" href="#e0005">(1)</a> The Linxia block was originally a Japanese-type island arc with a mainly low-resistivity structure, which corresponds to deformed, fractured middle and lower crust that contains saline fluids. (2) The Longzhong block was originally a Mariana-type island arc and has a resistive structure with good integrity, consistent with crust composed of ocean island basalt. (3) The Maxianshan fault, shown as a belt with a steep gradient in electrical resistivity model, is a supracrustal fault that acts as a suture between the Japanese-type island arc (now the Linxia block) and the Mariana-type island arc (now the Longzhong block).

THE LITHOSPHERIC ELECTRICAL STRUCTURE OF JI'AN‐FUZHOU PROFILE IN THE EAST PART OF SOUTH CHINA

Abstract:As having experienced multi-stage tectonic magmatic activity, the structure of the lithosphere in the east part of South China is very complicated and the distribution of magma has obvious regularity. In order to study the deep tectonic background of magmatic activity of the different blocks in the east part of South China, this paper has processed a series of qualitative and quantitative analysis based on the Ji'an-Fuzhou magnetotelluric sounding profile data crossing the east part of South China. The subsurface dimensionality was analyzed by the Bahr phase decomposition, the geoelectric strike with different frequencies was obtained by the single-site multi-frequency Groom-Bailey decomposition. Finally, the non-linear conjugate gradients(NLCG)method was used to calculate the 2D resistivity structure in our research area.The electrical structure model shows that there are significant differences between the two blocks-Wuyi uplift belt and Southeast coastal fold belt. It can be vertically divided into four electrical layers of the high resistivity layer in upper crust, the low resistivity layer in mid-lower crust, the sub-high resistivity layer in the lithosphere mantle, the low resistivity in the asthenosphere. In the upper crust, the high resistivity layer more than 10000 Omega m thick indicates the distribution of granite whose bottom interface is about 15 similar to 20 km deep. In the mid-lower crust, the high-conductivity layer in the Wuyi uplift belt is thin and of small scale. It is associated with the thrust faults. However, in the Southeast coastal fold belt, the high-conductivity layer is thicker and larger. It is uplifted in a mushroom shape. The resistivity in lithosphere mantle gradually reduces from inland to coast. Due to the limited detecting depth, the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary (LAB) is not showed in the Wuyi uplift belt which indicates that the depth of the LAB is more than 100 km. In the Southeast coastal fold belt, the thickness of the lithosphere is reduced to 60km, and the asthenosphere has an uplift tendency.In the east part of South China, there are a series of discontinuous and different scale high-conductivity layers in the crust. The scale and burial depth of the high-conductivity layers are closely related to the deep tectonic environment and fault distribution. Combining with gravity and magnetic results, we discussed the formation mechanism of high-conductivity layer. It is inferred that the high-conductivity layer in the crust of the Southeast coastal fold belt is the result of partial melting by asthenosphere upwelling and basaltic magma underplating. While in the Wuyi uplift belt, it is resulted from the remelting of the crustal material in a compression environment, and the continuous heating from the deep heat flow in an extensional environment. The lithosphere structure in the east part of South China has a marked zoning, and the high-conductivity layers with different causes are widespread within the crust. It shows that the magmatic activities in different tectonic units in the east part of South China have different diagenetic tectonic background. In the Southeast coastal fold belt, the deep lithospheric thermal erosion is active, and the lithosphere structure and material are strongly remoulded. The asthenosphere upwelling and the basaltic magma underplating caused the thinning of lithosphere. In the Wuyi uplift belt, the tectonic features of the intra-continental deformation pattern during the Indo-early Yanshanian period are recorded clearly, while the late Mesozoic extension tectonics has transformed the lithosphere material to some degree.
Structural controlling conditions for dry hot rock reservoirs in the middle section of the northern margin in the North China Block

Abstract:According to a comprehensive analysis of regional geology–geophysics, this article focuses on structural conditions for dry hot rocks in the middle section of the northern margin of the North China Block and adjacent areas, revealing the controlling effect of the structure of dry hot rock reservoirs. Based on processing the latest high-precision data from an aeromagnetic survey, studying the characteristics of aeromagnetic anomalies such as geophysical field boundaries, anomaly zones, and anomaly dislocation lines, and quantitative calculation results of wavelet analysis and other methods, this study discusses the characteristics, scales, and cutting relationships and further clarifies the levels, active periods, and relative strengths of the faults in the middle section of the northern margin of the North China Block and its adjacent areas. According to their aeromagnetic data and aeromagnetic identification mark, faults in the studying region are determined in detail. The study region mainly develops four groups of regional faults. The main faults in this region are in the near-EW, NE, SN, and NW directions. Their interlacing and overlapping constitute the complex structural features of the study area and control regional magmatic activity. The deep faults are important channels for upwelling deep heat sources and the eruption or intrusion of magma. The control degree of regional faults in different directions on magmatic activity differs. Next, we discuss the fault system and its mutual control and propose that the faults in the near-NW direction also have great importance in tectonic evolution in the northern part of the North China Block and merit more attention.

Mantle Anisotropy Across the Southwestern Boundary of the Ordos Block,north China

Abstract:Located at the northeastern margin of the Tibetan plateau, the Ordos block is a stable tectonic unit in North China. With its active boundary fault zones, the Ordos block played an important role in the eastward extrusion mechanism of the Tibetan plateau. Peking University deployed a linear array of 15 portable broadband seismometers across the western Weihe graben during September 2005 to August 2006 and later a 2-D seismic array (Southwest Ordos Array) of 14 portable broadband seismometers during 2007–2008 at its southwestern boundary. Analyses of shear wave splitting of SKS and SKKS phases at these stations show that the fast directions trend ∼110° with an average delay time of 0.9 s in the southwestern margin of the Ordos block. The agreement between the lithosphere deformation indicated by GPS data and Quaternary fault slip-rate observations and the mantle flow represented by shear wave splitting implies that accordant deformation patterns from lithosphere to asthenosphere in relation to the eastward extrusion of the Tibetan plateau could extend at least to 200 km depth. Spatial distribution of splitting polarization directions indicates that the mantle flow driven by the Tibetan plateau is blocked by the Ordos block and locally restricted in a narrow channel along the Qinling-Dabie fault zones between the Ordos block and Sichuan basin.

Abstract:The magnitude 8.0 Ms Wenchuan earthquake of 12 May 2008 occurred along the Longmen Shan fault zone, southwest of China, is a huge hazard. Why the earthquake is happened along the NE-SW tending and in an inactive orogenic area? What is the geodynamics caused the earthquake erupting abruptly? Usage of the results of the processing and interpretation of the magnetotelluric data observed before the Wenchuan earthquake from Luqu-Zhongjiang passed through the Qinling tectonic zone, Songpan-Garze block and Longmen Shan as well as Sichaun basin, this paper reveals crustal architecture of 50 km depth of the Eastern Qinghai-Tibet plateau and Western Sichuan foreland basin and the relationship between them, with the characteristics of eastern pressing of the Qinghai-Tibet plateau forcing Songpan-Garze block thrusting upon the Yangzi continent block, later obstructing the eastern movement of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The Longmen Shan is located at the joint of two block and has been found there is a west inclined low-conductivity layer in the crust of 10-20 km depth of Longmen Shan, it is deduced as the deep conductivity characteristics of thrustbelt structure in Longmen Shan. The huge earthquake has caused about 300 kilometers long rupture zone,it happened mainly in faults of Beichuan-Yingxiu and Pengxian-Guanxian of Longmen Shan faults setup, which is going down with the north-western inclined along the thrustbelt in the Longmen Shan. The two faults of Beichuan-Yingxiu and Pengxian-Guanxian seem going to converge together at the deep but they are probably separated with the Maoxian-Wenchuan fault in the Longmen Shan structure zone. There are a little different characters for the Sichuan basin and the Songpan-Garze foldbelts located at the two side of the Longmen Shan, for Sichuan basin has the characteristics of the upper thick low resistance sedimentary, and the under stable high resistance basement, while Songpan-Garze block has high resisitivity cover of upper crust with continuous low resistance bed of the crust. Resulting from the Songpan-Garze block thrust upper the Sichuan Basin stability block, the Longmen Shan structure zone formed three layer of geoelectrical structure which is a high resistance in the upper and lower part of high resistance basin basement, and mingling with low resistance thrust fault zone in the middle. As explanation above, the conclusion could be focused on (1) there is a western inclined thrusting zone range from surface to depth 20km or more under Longmen Shan and Songpan Block, which caused the earthquake happen as it be activated; (2) the different action of surface breaking of Longmen Shan thrusting faults depend on the deep structure characteristics; (3) the earthquake is caused by the mutually promotive with Eurasian plate, Indian plate and Pacific plate in a broad sense. So the research on the MT profile is important for both continent dynamics in the orogenic zone and deep mechanism of Wenchuan earthquake at Longmeshan fault zone in the east of the Qinghai-Tibet plateau.
Magnetotelluric Evidence for Lithospheric Alteration Beneath the Wuyi‐Yunkai Orogen: Implications for Thermal Structure of South China

Abstract:The Wuyi-Yunkai Orogen experienced a polyphase tectonomagmatism and is a key region for deciphering the alteration and thermal structure of the South China Block lithosphere. Herein, an electrical resistivity model of the lithosphere is presented via the three-dimensional inversion of broadband (0.003-3600 s) magnetotelluric (MT) data collected along a 380-km-long profile comprising 62 MT sites across the Wuyi-Yunkai Orogen, and the robustness of this model is critically evaluated through a series of sensitivity tests. The resistivity model reveals that the upper crust of the Cathaysia Block and the Wuyi-Yunkai Orogen is dominated by high-resistivity sedimentary cover interposed with low-resistivity features, mainly along fault zones. High-resistivity bodies and strong conductors in the upper crust are interpreted as magmatic rocks and tectonic melanges, respectively. Another feature of this resistivity model is the presence of zones featuring enhanced electrical conductivity (<30 omega m) extending from the lower crust to the upper mantle beneath the Wuyi-Yunkai Orogen. The conductors in the lower crust are attributed to saline fluids from either the dehydration of the subducting Paleo-Pacific slab or the regional metamorphism-induced dehydration of sandy argillaceous rocks. In contrast, the conductors in the upper mantle are attributed to 4%-7% partial melt, which corresponds to the analyses of mantle xenoliths in South China. These conductors in the upper crust and upper mantle supply volatiles and heat to shallow geothermal systems. This work ultimately shows that the lithospheric thinning of South China is controlled mainly by mantle upwelling caused by the retreat of the subducting Paleo-Pacific slab.

During the orogenic collapse, the lower crust was removed by delamination in the eastern Dabie in response to the Paleo-Pacific subduction. However, it is still unclear whether the lower crust beneath Tongbai Mountain is also totally delaminated. Attempting to supply new high-quality geophysical data, we deployed a NE-long-period magnetotelluric profile across the Tongbai Mountain to construct its deep resistivity structure. The induction arrows and phase tensors indicate that our data bears significant 3D effects. We thus invert the profile data by using 3D scheme of ModEM. The inverted model characterizes the asymmetric two-way subduction structure of the orogen, where the resistive structures extending to the depth of ∼80 km beneath the north part of the Tongbai Mountain. These features are distinct from the eastern Dabie orogen, indicating that the collision style between the Yangtze and North China blocks and the orogenic collapse are spatially heterogeneous. These findings have obvious implications for resolving the long-standing debate on formation and evolution of the Qinling-Dabie Orogen. Seismic Imaging of Crustal Reworking and Lithospheric Modification in Eastern China

Abstract:We processed teleseismic waveforms from a temporal 36-station seismic array to determine the crustal and lithospheric structure of the eastern South China Block. The NCISP-8 seismic profile spans a 480 km transect across the northeastern South China Block as well as the convergent boundary between the North China Craton and the South China Block. Common conversion point (CCP) stacking was used to image velocity discontinuities in the lithosphere along the profile. Synthetic test of CCP imaging along with forward modelling and inversion analysis of receiver function waveforms were used to identify attributes of the discontinuities obtained from CCP imaging and construct velocity models for each station. The crustal structures identified include a horizontally widespread low-velocity zone in the lower crust as well as local vertically diffuse crust-mantle boundary. These features indicate the effect of significant crustal reworking. We interpret the observed crustal fabrics as the effect of magmatism occurring since the Late Mesozoic. The thin lithosphere (57-86 km) and the heterogeneous lithospheric mantle structure provide compelling evidence of lithospheric modification in the eastern South China Block. Similarities between the lithospheric structures of the eastern South China Block and eastern North China Craton confirm that subducting ocean plate-continental lithosphere interaction controlled continental lithospheric modification in eastern China.

Abstract:High-resolution images of the crust were obtained along two high-density temporary seismic arrays that cross tectonic blocks in the southwest boundary of the Ordos block and its adjacent regions. Dense stations with <1-km station spacings allowed teleseismic receiver functions to unveil the unprecedented details of crustal structures from the northeast margin of the Tibetan Plateau and the Qinling orogenic belt to the southwest Ordos block. The observations from nearby broadband seismic stations and two-dimensional numerical simulation were used to verify the reliability and validity of our results from the temporary dense array data. The receiver function profiles and the migration images revealed the contrasting crustal structures beneath the southwest Ordos block and the adjacent regions. Liupanshan mountain is a boundary that resists the lateral growth of the Tibetan Plateau; however, the slight bending of the Moho indicates absence of large-scale deformation in west Liupanshan. The Moho transition zone beneath the Weihe graben and southwest corner of the Ordos block represented by the complicated P-to-S converted phases can be contributed to the eastward extrusion of hot uppermost mantle from the Tibetan Plateau driven by the mantle flow.
Electrical structure of the fault system in the Tangyin graben, eastern margin of the Taihangshan uplift, China: Inferences from magnetotelluric imaging

Abstract:We present three-dimensional magnetotelluric images across the southern segment of the Taihangshan uplift and the Tangyin graben. Distinct electrical structures are recognized between these two regions. The upper crust of the southern segment of the Taihangshan uplift is characterized by a high resistivity structure, and the underlying middle and lower crust contain a high conductivity layer. On the eastern side of the uplift, the upper crust contains a high conductivity structure in the Tangyin graben and a high resistivity structure in the Neihuang uplift. The lower crust is dominated by a single coherent high resistivity structure. The Tangxi fault, Tangdong fault, and the western margin fault of the Neihuang uplift collectively form a flower structure, wherein the Tangdong fault is dominant. Three-dimensional inversion is also carried out for magnetotelluric profiles across the central-northern segment of the Taihangshan uplift and the Shijiazhuang-Jinxian depression to serve as a comparison for the southern portion of the Taihangshan uplift. The central-northern segment of the Taihangshan uplift is characterized by a high resistivity structure. The upper crust of the Shijiazhuang-Jinxian depression is characterized by a combination of a high conductivity graben and a high resistivity adjacent uplift. The deep electrical structure of the Tangdong fault and the associated concealed subvertical electrical boundary zone are quite similar to the electrical structure in the vicinity of the 1966 Xingtai earthquake. We conclude that the existence of tectonic conditions in the middle and lower crust of the Tangyin graben might be capable of creating moderate to strong earthquakes.
