Abstract:We have measured Rayleigh wave phase velocities of the Ordos Block and its southern and western boundary areas and inverted these data to describe the upper mantle structure. The Ordos Block was found to be characterized by distinctly high seismic velocities at depths commonly associated with a low velocity asthenosphere. To the south, abnormally slow velocity anomalies appeared in the Weihe rift, probably indicating subsolidus grain-boundary weakening effect under high temperatures near solidus instead of partial melt in the asthenosphere. An intermediate seismic velocity structure was observed beneath the Northern Qinling orogen (NQL) to the south of the Weihe rift. A thin, high velocity lid, which was probably a cratonic relic, was found under the Haiyuan arcuate tectonic region (HATR) west of the Ordos Block. A thick lithosphere was present beneath the Ordos Block (>200km) and the NQL (~140km), while a thinner lithosphere (~100km) was found beneath the HATR and the Weihe rift. The observed structural differences were likely associated with different lithospheric tectonics in the study region. Whereas the Weihe rift and the HATR had been strongly affected by Cenozoic lithospheric modification and thinning, the Ordos Block and the NQL appeared to have been much less influenced. Combined with previous studies, our results suggested that the far-field effect of the Indo–Asia collision may have played an important role in the unique lithospheric process in the study region, such as the extension of the Weihe rift, the preservation of a cratonic relic under the HATR, and the localized intense lithospheric modification of these two regions. The substantial variations of deep structure and thus contrasting rheological properties between the Ordos Block and the surrounding notable seismic belts (the HATR and Weihe rift) may be a candidate mechanism for the contrasting seismicity of the region. The lateral variations in the lithospheric structure estimated here generally agreed with changes in upper mantle deformation patterns previously derived from SKS splitting measurements.

Abstract:The tectonic setting of southern margin of North China Craton has drawn much attention during Mesoproterozoic Changcheng Period. Researchers have proposed several plausible models of geological settings mostly based on geochemical properties of volcanic rocks. The main views about the geological background are B-type subduction, Andean type subduction, non-orogenic extension and stretching which is related to the breakup of Supercontinent Columbia. This paper focus on tectonic features and stratum distribution of Changcheng Group in the south central Ordos block with geophysical methods meanwhile makes some study on its tectonic setting and basin property. The 2D seismic data indicates tectonic cycle in Changcheng Period with syn-rift and post-rift phase included. In syn-rift phase, the boundary faults act intensely, and the hanging wall rotated, leading to the development of sub-grabens and half-grabens. In the meantime fan delta and subaqueous fans filled in. The formations thicknesses are huge in depocenter of wedges. In post rift phase, the activity of faults was weak, resulting in the formation with consistent thickness, which overlapped on the wedges. Besides, the consequence of gravity anomaly inversion suggests several depressions and salients developed during the same period which were probably controlled by the boundary faults. Combined with the sedimentary characteristics of block margin, we deem the study area to be a rift basin during the Changcheng Period.

Abstract:The Qaidam and Oulongbuluke micro-continental blocks are geochemically similar to the Yangtze Block, but their metamorphic history are strikingly different from each other. The Delingha Complex and Dakendaban Group in the lower basement of the Oulongbuluke Block underwent upper amphibolite-facies to granulite-facies regional metamorphism and cratonization at ~1.95 Ga and were part of the assembly Columbia supercontinent. The greenschist-facies metamorphism along with the Mesoproterozoic Wandongguo Group at ~1.0 Ga corresponds to the assembly event of the Rodinia supercontinent. This was followed by continental breakup in the late Neoproterozoic and uplift in the Ordovician during the opening and closing of the Proto-Tethys Ocean. The basement of the Qaidam Block is mainly composed of the Mesoproterozoic Baishahe Formation of the Jinshuikou Group in the southern margin, and the Wulongtan Formation of the Shaliuhe Group on the northern margin. These formations were part of the assembly event of the Rodinia supercontinent, and were associated with intrusion of S-type granitoids. During the late Pan-African tectonothemal event (520-480 Ma), the Qaidam Block was subducted and collided with Gondwanaland terranes and was subjected to medium-pressure amphibolite-to granulite-facies metamorphism and HP-UHP metamorphism. Following these metamorphic events, the Block broke up and moved into the Proto-Tethys Ocean, and was subjected to metamorphism during 460-420 Ma due to closing of the Proto-Tethys Ocean. Regional comparisons show that the Oulongbuluke Block has similarities with the Arlashan Block and the Tarim Block as well as Yangtze Block in the Paleoproterozoic basements in principal part, the late Paleoproterozoic cratonization, the assembly of parts of the Rodinia supercontinent and the ~450 Ma tectonothermal event. However, the Qaidam Block has similarity with the North Qinling Block as well as the Qilian Block in the ~500 Ma tectonothemal event in addition to the Mesoproterozoic basement components, responding to assembly event of Rodinia supercontinent and the ~450 Ma tectonothermal event. Accordingly, these blocks can be separately grouped into Tarim-Ouloungbuluke blocks and Qaidam-Qinling blocks. The ~500 Ma and ~450 Ma tectonothermal events that recorded in the Qaidam-Qinling blocks are of different origins.
The sedimentary and tectonic framework of the Ordovician foreland basin in the southern margin of the Ordos Block and its evolution

Abstract:The southern margin of the Ordos Block is located in the transition zone between the block and the North Qinling orogenic belt, and therefore it is an ideal place to study the sedimentary or tectonic response of Ordovician arc-land collision event in the North Qinling orogenic belt. There is still a lack of clear understanding of the sedimentary filling characteristics, tectonic properties, structure and evolutionary history of the Ordovician basin in the southern margin of the Ordos Block. In this paper, through comprehensive analysis of the typical section observation results in the outcrop area and the geophysical data of the overburden area, it is found that the sedimentary filling of the Ordovician basin in the southern margin of the Ordos Block is a wedge-shaped sedimentary body defined by regional unconformities at the top and bottom respectively, which is thick in the south and thin in the north. From north to south, the tectonic framework of this region can be divided into the depression zone confined depositional environment, the continuous uplift zone and the basin zone that have undergone restricted shallow water, marine deep water and terrestrial alluvial environments. Combining the analysis of Ordovician geotectonic properties and evolutionary history of the North Qinling orogenic belt, it can be concluded that the Ordovician basin in the southern margin of the Ordos Block is a peripheral foreland basin associated with the Ordovician arc-land collision event in the North Qinling orogenic belt, and it has undergone the following four stages of evolution : (1) Yeli-Liangjiashan stage, the initial flexural stage of the foreland basin; (1) Mal -Ma5 stage, the structure-forming stage of the foreland basin; (3) Ma6-Pingliang stage, the rapid subsidence stage of the foreland basin; (4) Beiguoshan stage, the rapid filling stage of the foreland basin. The Ordovician foreland basin in the southern margin of the Ordos Block has the typical structure of a classic foreland basin, in which the fold-thrust belt is located in the Xi' an-Baoji area including the Weihe graben; the foredeep zone is spread in the Qishan-Fuping area in the near east-west direction; the forebulge zone is located in the Qingyang-Yuncheng area; the back-bulge zone is roughly located in the Yan'an-Yulin-Suide area in an irregular oval shape. This study not only helps to find out the nature, structure and evolution history of the Ordovician basin in the southern margin of the Ordos Block, but also provides geological and historical evidence for the Ordovician arc-land collision event in the North Qinling orogenic belt.
Mantle Anisotropy Across the Southwestern Boundary of the Ordos Block,north China

Abstract:Located at the northeastern margin of the Tibetan plateau, the Ordos block is a stable tectonic unit in North China. With its active boundary fault zones, the Ordos block played an important role in the eastward extrusion mechanism of the Tibetan plateau. Peking University deployed a linear array of 15 portable broadband seismometers across the western Weihe graben during September 2005 to August 2006 and later a 2-D seismic array (Southwest Ordos Array) of 14 portable broadband seismometers during 2007–2008 at its southwestern boundary. Analyses of shear wave splitting of SKS and SKKS phases at these stations show that the fast directions trend ∼110° with an average delay time of 0.9 s in the southwestern margin of the Ordos block. The agreement between the lithosphere deformation indicated by GPS data and Quaternary fault slip-rate observations and the mantle flow represented by shear wave splitting implies that accordant deformation patterns from lithosphere to asthenosphere in relation to the eastward extrusion of the Tibetan plateau could extend at least to 200 km depth. Spatial distribution of splitting polarization directions indicates that the mantle flow driven by the Tibetan plateau is blocked by the Ordos block and locally restricted in a narrow channel along the Qinling-Dabie fault zones between the Ordos block and Sichuan basin.
Inversion of the Deep Structure of the Northern Margin of the Ordos Block Using Teleseismic Receiver Functions and Gravity Data

Abstract:The Ordos Block is a critical component of the North China Craton (NCC), which is located at the northeastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau. Over the years, it has undergone complex tectonic evolution due to the influence of multiple factors, such as the India–Eurasia plate collision, the subduction of the Pacific Plate, and the southward movement of the Siberian Plate. To investigate the crustal structure and dynamic evolution of the northern margin of the Ordos Block, this study employs joint inversion of receiver functions and gravity data and then integrates results from geology, geophysics, and geodesy. The overall results indicate that the crustal thickness shows a thickening trend from south to north. The generally high Poisson's ratio suggests that the crust is rich in silica or subjected to high crustal stress. Furthermore, the common conversion point (CCP) stacking results identify distinct layering in the subsurface structure of the northern margin, including the Conrad discontinuity and low-velocity zones, thus reflecting its complex deep structure. Driven by the eastward growth of the Tibetan Plateau and the northwestward subduction of the Pacific Plate, the block rotates counterclockwise, playing a significant role in the formation of surrounding rift basins. The abovementioned findings emphasize the influence of surrounding tectonic activities on the crustal structure and dynamics of the northern margin of the Ordos Block, thus highlighting the potential for strong earthquakes in the region.

Crustal structure of the Ordos block and adjacent regions along an N-S profile of 107. 6E

Abstract:The Ordos Block is located in the west of the North China Craton, close to the northeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau. It has played an important role in the tectonic activities of eastern China mainland since Mesozoic and Cenozoic, especially the evolution and destruction of the North China Craton. To reveal the fine crustal structure with higher resolution beneath the Ordos and adjacent regions, this work analyzed seismic data along an N-S profile of 107. 6 degrees E including 27 temporary broadband stations from the newly deployed ChinArray-Himalaya II that stretches across the Yinshan oregon, Hetao graben and Ordos block. Also data of 17 stations from SOS-Array and permanent CEA stations at the south of this profile, crossing the Weihe graben, Qinling zone and Sichuan basin, were added to enhance the analysis. We derived receiver functions and used the Kirchhoff migration method to create a preliminary image of the Moho under this profile. Detailed structures in the crust and the Moho variation were then obtained with a joint inversion of the receiver functions and surface wave dispersion curves from previous study beneath each station. The results reveal that: (1) the Moho is generally flat at about 45 km depth in the northern part of Ordos, and becomes deeper to about 50 km in the southern part. To the north of Ordos, Moho is also 50 km deep under the Hetao graben. To the south of Ordos, crust is thinned to about 40 km beneath the Weihe graben and then thickened under the Qinling belt and Sichuan basin to about 47 similar to 50 km. (2) A large-scale slow velocity anomaly exists beneath the Hetao basin and goes to a maximum depth of 25 km, which may reflect its prominent extensional and sedimentary history. (3) Beneath the Qinling oregon, the slow velocity anomaly indicates predominantly felsic crustal composition, which could be caused by removal of lower mafic crust by delamination during the Mesozoic. (4) The migration image and joint-inverted velocities under the Ordos block display different crustal structures bounded by 38 degrees N, which may be associated with different tectonic histories of the two parts on either side.
Shear Wave Splitting in the Southern Margin of the Ordos Block, North China

Abstract:The southern margin of the Ordos Block in North China marks the transition from a stable cratonic block to active transextensional deformation in the Weihe Graben, driven by the northeastward expansion of the Tibet Plateau. We deployed 29 portable digital stations across this boundary and studied the upper mantle anisotropy using SKS splitting. The anisotropy is weak (δt < 0.5 s) at stations within the Ordos Block and in the North Weihe Graben, but strong (δt = 1.23 ± 0.39 s) in the South Weihe Graben and Qinling Orogen further south. The directions of the fast S‐wave are 98 ± 7°, subparallel to the orientations of surface structures and the GPS site velocities relative to stable Asian continent. We suggest that this E‐W oriented anisotropy is the result of both the collision between the North and South China Blocks in the Mesozoic, and the eastward upper mantle flow driven by the Indo‐Asian collision.

Abstract:The Ordos block is a rigid portion of the North China Craton lying within the India-Eurasia collision zone that experiences little internal deformation, but is surrounded by active faulting, extensional grabens, and seismicity. In the surrounding region, geodetic studies have imaged complex crustal deformation, while seismic studies have suggested that the lithosphere is encountering regional modification by mantle convection. The Ordos block thus presents a valuable opportunity to compare seismic and geodetic constraints and investigate geodynamic processes affecting the region’s lithosphere. We here robustly image vertical land motion and horizontal strain rates using observations from the geographically extensive Global Navigation Satellite System and leveling networks in and around the Ordos block. Our results indicate that the Ordos block uplifts with some lateral variability at 0.5−2.0 mm/yr. In the northeastern Ordos block and Datong volcanic area, the crustal uplift rates are 2.0−4.0 mm/yr on average, much faster than those elsewhere on the block. We correct for non-tectonic vertical motion from surface hydrological loading and glacial isostatic adjustment, finding that these do not explain the vertical rate anomalies. Horizontal crustal extension and uplift are accompanied by a pattern of crustal contraction at the Datong volcanic field. Additionally, we find uplift west of and subsidence east of the Qinling Orogenic Belt, which are inconsistent with eastward crustal extrusion along it, suggesting instead a negligible migration of crustal materials especially to the east of 106°E. Comparing the geodetic measurements to evidence from seismic velocity anomalies and numerical simulation, we argue that the motions are consistent with lithospheric re-equilibration resulting from the heterogeneous thinning of the lithosphere by convective mantle upwelling and radial flow as well as shortening from the India-Eurasia collision.

Abstract:The Ordos Block is one of the key elements of the North China Craton (NCC), and the Precambrian compositions and structures record the early-stage evolution of the NCC, such as cratonization of early continental crust, Paleoproterozoic mobile belts, Meso- and Neoproterozoic rifting, and platform development. Many basic issues on the early-stage tectonic evolution bear upon the Ordos Block. The following are some new achievements in fundamental geology of the Ordos Block. (1) Drill cores reveal that the Ordos Block possesses Neoarchean-Paleoproterozoic metamorphic basement. The Neoarchean granitic gneisses and Paleoproterozoic pelitic gneisses and granites of the Ordos Block are quite similar in geochemistry and metamorphism to the Paleoproterozoic metamorphic complexes and migmatite of the central and northern portions of the NCC. (2) The proto-Ordos Basin is an intra-cratonic basin with old crystalline basements. Precambrian sedimentary successions are mostly made with the Changcheng and Jixian systems, with the Qingbaikou and Nahua systems being largely absent. The Sinian or Ediacaran strata are partially preserved. The Paleozoic sequence of the Ordos Block is consistent with that of the rest parts of the NCC. (3) A Greater Ordos Basin existed in the Late Triassic, which extended eastward to the Bohai Gulf and Xuhuai belt. Precambrian basement rocks of the Lüliang and Taihang mountains were exhumed due to the NW-SE crustal shortening in the Mid-Late Jurassic, leading to the disruption of the Greater Ordos Basin. The Ordos Basin in a narrow sense was formed largely since the Late Jurassic. (4) The Ordos Basin proper is now surrounded by major active faults. Precambrian metamorphic rocks, which outcrop discontinuously beside the major faults, are compatible well with their counterparts in the other parts of the NCC in many respects like geochronology, geochemistry, and metamorphism. (5) The Ordos Block was in an extensional setting during Cretaceous and Cenozoic times, as manifested by rift basins, such as the Early Cretaceous rift zone in the western Ordos Basin and the Tertiary Shanxi, Weihe and Yinchuan grabens. The Lüliang and Taihang mountains were further uplifted as a result of crustal stretching. Recent studies confirm that the Ordos Block and the other parts of the NCC share the identical metamorphic basement and Mesoproterozoic-Paleozoic sedimentary sequences. Therefore, reconstructing tectonic history of the NCC should be based on careful analysis and logical explanation of geologic data as well as the reevaluation of some long-held conceptions. There have remained a number of disputes on how the North China continent originated and evolved. The Ordos Block can serve as an archive for solving the crux of the problems.

Upper mantle seismic structure in the Ordos Block, China

Abstract:The Ordos Block in the western part of the North China Craton is enigmatic in having contrasting topographic structure in the northern and southern parts, while previous geophysical studies show little difference in crustal and upper mantle structure across the region. Here we present a new model of upper mantle structure in the Ordos Block region in order to test the importance of mantle heterogeneity for topographic differences. Our model is based on P- and S-wave seismic receiver functions calculated for data from 171 stations. It documents the presence of an uppermost mantle low-velocity zone between the Mid Lithospheric Discontinuity (MLD) and the Lehmann discontinuity. Clear converters at the 410 and 660 km discontinuities show constant Mantle Transition Zone (MTZ) thickness within the Ordos Block region, which indicates that no deep mantle thermal anomaly affects its present dynamics. However, the amplitude of the MTZ-converters is higher in the southern than the northern Ordos Block. In contrast, the conversions from MLD and the Lehmann discontinuity are strongest in Northern Ordos, which we interpret as a block with essentially preserved cratonic lithospheric mantle. We speculate that smaller amplitudes of the MLD and Lehmann converters in Southern than Northern Ordos may be related to either rheological weakening of cratonic lithosphere during the Mesozoic convergence between the North and South (Yangtze) China Cratons, or northeast extrusion of Tibetan lower crust and upper mantle in the Cenozoic caused by the India-Asia collision.

Abstract:The Tibetan Plateau is growing by both vertical uplift and horizontal extension. It is a continuing debate how the Tibetan Plateau interacts with its surrounding plates and blocks. Due to intense tectonic activity, which produced catastrophic earthquakes, the tectonic zone between the northeast margin of the horizontal extending Tibetan Plateau and the stable Ordos Block has garnered considerable interest. This study investigated the spatial distribution of gas geochemical anomalies (e.g., high flux of CO2 in correspondence of the main faults) at regional scale together with the seismic tomography in correspondence of this tectonic zone with the aim to figure out the domain of convergent boundary between the Ordos block and Tibetan plateau, and trace the tectonic discontinuities which are able to transfer fluids through the crustal layers between the two main geological units. From northwest to southeast, obvious difference of spatial distributions of geochemical and geophysical features in the tectonic zone between the northeast margin of the Tibetan Plateau and the Ordos Block is inferred. The northeast area (Zone A) is dominated by thrust and strike-slip faults with clear velocity boundary underneath, where low crack density (ε), saturation rate (ξ) and Poisson’ ratio ( σ ) in the middle-lower crust coincided with the low values of heat flow and CO2 emissions, tectonic compression and regional locked-fault can be inducements. The southeast area (Zone C) is dominated by extensional tectonics with roughly E-W fast-velocity direction (FVD) of P-wave azimuthal anisotropy, where high permeability and porosity can be deduced from crustal high ε, ξ and relatively high σ anomalies, resulting in high heat flow, CO2 concentrations and fluxes at the surface, and predominantly crustal-derived gases. The intermediate area (Zone B) also dominated by thrust and strike-slip faults is an extraordinary zone, where intensely locked-fault were clearly revealed, while the predominant anisotropic FVDs in the middle crust changed obviously, more contribution of shallow gas component was detected, and CO2 flux, heat flow, and regional ε, ξ, and σ in the upper crust were higher, compared with those in Zone A, which indicated the regional crushing fragmentation underneath Zone B. The adopted multidisciplinary approach demonstrated that Zone B is the convergent boundary between the Tibetan Plateau and the Ordos Block.

Abstract:The multi-episodic tectonic activities from the Precambrian to Cenozoic, including nucleus formation, cratonic amalgamation, and rejuvenation, make the North China Craton (NCC) an ideal natural laboratory for studying craton evolution. Spatial change in the upper deformation records is an important aspect for understanding cratonic formation and rejuvenation. In this study, we performed seismic shear wave splitting analysis using SKS phases from 50 portable stations. Two different methodologies, shear wave splitting measurement and amplitude analysis of transverse/radial components, produced mutually consistent splitting results. These results showed that the seismic anisotropy beneath the Ordos Block can be divided into three subgroups reflecting the tectonic control. Combining these results with those from previous splitting studies in the eastern NCC, we suggest that the Proterozoic amalgamation generated the seismic anisotropy in the boundary zone between the Ordos Block and the Trans-North China Orogen, while the anisotropy in the eastern Trans-North China Orogen and eastern NCC were possibly associated with the lithospheric rejuvenation during the Late Mesozoic to Cenozoic. An Archean Continental Block in the Taihangshan and Hengshan Regions: Constraints from Geochronology and Geochemistry

Abstract:Recent research on the tectonothermal evolution and geochronology in the Fuping, Hengshan and Wutaishan metamorphic complexes, together with the discoveries of a high-pressure granulite belt in the northern margin of the North China Craton (NCC) and high-pressure metapelites in the Jingangku Group of the Wutaishan complex, suggests that there was a Neoarchean to Paleoproterozoic orogenic belt related to collision between the Eastern and Western continental blocks. Comparison of geological, geochronological, tectonothermal and geochemical data between the Fuping and Hengshan complexes suggests these two complexes most likely originated and evolved as a single lithotectonic domain (i.e., the Taihangshan-Hengshan block) during the early evolution of the North China Craton, probably as an active margin to the Eastern Continental Block. The Taihangshan-Hengshan block has been subjected to intensive and extensive tectono-magmatism and high-grade metamorphism related to collision between the Eastern and Western continental blocks at similar to1.80 Ga.

Abstract:High-resolution images of the crust were obtained along two high-density temporary seismic arrays that cross tectonic blocks in the southwest boundary of the Ordos block and its adjacent regions. Dense stations with <1-km station spacings allowed teleseismic receiver functions to unveil the unprecedented details of crustal structures from the northeast margin of the Tibetan Plateau and the Qinling orogenic belt to the southwest Ordos block. The observations from nearby broadband seismic stations and two-dimensional numerical simulation were used to verify the reliability and validity of our results from the temporary dense array data. The receiver function profiles and the migration images revealed the contrasting crustal structures beneath the southwest Ordos block and the adjacent regions. Liupanshan mountain is a boundary that resists the lateral growth of the Tibetan Plateau; however, the slight bending of the Moho indicates absence of large-scale deformation in west Liupanshan. The Moho transition zone beneath the Weihe graben and southwest corner of the Ordos block represented by the complicated P-to-S converted phases can be contributed to the eastward extrusion of hot uppermost mantle from the Tibetan Plateau driven by the mantle flow.
Petrology, Phase Equilibria and Monazite Geochronology of Granulite-Facies Metapelites from Deep Drill Cores in the Ordos Block of the North China Craton

Abstract:Among the various Precambrian crustal blocks in the North China Craton (NCC), the geology and evolution of the Ordos Block remain largely enigmatic due to paucity of outcrop. Here we investigate granulite-facies metapelites obtained from deep-penetrating drill holes in the Ordos Block and report petrology, calculated phase equilibria and in-situ monazite LA-ICP-MS geochronology. The rocks we studied are two samples of cordierite-bearing garnet–sillimanite–biotite metapelitic gneisses and one graphite-bearing, two-mica granitic gneiss. The peak metamorphic age from LA-ICP-MS dating of monazite in all three samples is in the range of 1930–1940Ma. The (U+Pb)–Th chemical ages through EPMA dating reveals that monazite occurring as inclusions in garnet are older than those in the matrix. Calculated metamorphic phase diagrams for the cordierite-bearing metapelite suggest peak P–T conditions ca. 7–9kbar and 775–825°C, followed by decompression and evolution along a clockwise P–T path. Our petrologic and age data are consistent with those reported from the Khondalite Belt in the Inner Mongolia Suture Zone in the northern part of the Ordos Block, suggesting that these granulite-facies metasediments represent the largest Paleoproterozoic accretionary belt in the NCC.
Late Neoarchean Plate Subduction in Western North China Craton: Evidence from Ca. 2.51 Ga to 2.46 Ga Basement Rocks in Northern Ordos Basin

Abstract:The most poorly exposed and least understood in the North China Craton (NCC) lies largely hidden beneath the Ordos Basin, severely limiting the cognition of the Precambrian tectonic evolution in the western NCC and the tectonic division. Diverse orthogneiss samples collected from four boreholes drilled into the basement of the north side of Hangjinqi Fault Zone (HFZ) in the North Ordos Basin (NOB) are investigated by integrating zircon U-Pb dating, Hf-Nd isotopes, and whole-rock geochemical analyses. The TTG gneiss, quartz-monzonite gneiss, granodiorite gneiss, and amphibolite were emplaced at ca. 2.51-2.46 Ga, of which the amphibolite also recorded the metamorphic age of ca. 1.95 Ga. The TTG gneisses display low MgO, Mg#, Cr, and Ni, high HREE and Rb/Sr, enrichment of LILEs and depletion of Nb, Ta, and Ti, and positive eNd(t) (2.04-4.06) and eHf(t) (3.04-7.59) values, suggesting that they were mainly originated from partial melting of the tectonically thickened mafic island-arc crust. In contrast, the quartz monzonite gneisses and granodiorite gneisses show the geochemical features of Archean sanukitoids with higher MgO, Mg#, Cr, and Ni, and similar eNd(t) (1.34-3.82) and eHf(t) values (3.94-7.32), suggesting that they were derived from the partial melting of the mantle metasomatized by fluids and melts of the subduction. The amphibolites exhibit a mixed characteristic of E-MORB and arc-like geochemical affinities resembling the Mariana back-arc basin, which was derived from the partial melting of spinel lherzolite. The arc and arc-back lithological assemblages suggest that the north margin of the NOB might be in a geodynamic transition period from a compressional regime correlated with plate subduction to an extensional regime correlated with slab rollback during ca. 2.51-2.46 Ga. Combined with previous analytical results, the northern margin of the NOB was most likely in a long-term active continental margin setting during 2.51-1.95 Ga and involved in the collision event between the Yinshan Block and Ordos Block at ca. 1.95 Ga.

Abstract:According to a comprehensive analysis of regional geology–geophysics, this article focuses on structural conditions for dry hot rocks in the middle section of the northern margin of the North China Block and adjacent areas, revealing the controlling effect of the structure of dry hot rock reservoirs. Based on processing the latest high-precision data from an aeromagnetic survey, studying the characteristics of aeromagnetic anomalies such as geophysical field boundaries, anomaly zones, and anomaly dislocation lines, and quantitative calculation results of wavelet analysis and other methods, this study discusses the characteristics, scales, and cutting relationships and further clarifies the levels, active periods, and relative strengths of the faults in the middle section of the northern margin of the North China Block and its adjacent areas. According to their aeromagnetic data and aeromagnetic identification mark, faults in the studying region are determined in detail. The study region mainly develops four groups of regional faults. The main faults in this region are in the near-EW, NE, SN, and NW directions. Their interlacing and overlapping constitute the complex structural features of the study area and control regional magmatic activity. The deep faults are important channels for upwelling deep heat sources and the eruption or intrusion of magma. The control degree of regional faults in different directions on magmatic activity differs. Next, we discuss the fault system and its mutual control and propose that the faults in the near-NW direction also have great importance in tectonic evolution in the northern part of the North China Block and merit more attention.

Abstract:Phase velocities at periods of 20-143 s are inverted from Rayleigh surface waves recorded at 201 stations of permanent and temporary seismic network deployed in the northern Ordos Block. We obtained the shear-wave velocities in the upper mantle from phase velocities. Our velocity models clearly reveal a striking low-velocity anomaly zone in the upper mantle beneath the northeastern margin of the Ordos Block. The low-velocity zone at periods of 50-100 s extends from the north end of the Luliangshan Mountain to the north border of the western North China Craton. The minimum shear-wave velocity is approximately 4.2 km/s and the minimum lithospheric thickness is approximately 80 km in the low-velocity anomaly zone. Our shear-wave velocity results indicate that lithospheric thinning, asthenospheric upwelling and partial melting may occur in the region during the Cenozoic. High temperature and thinned lithosphere may be significant factors that cause partial melting in the asthenospheric mantle. During the Cenozoic, asthenospheric upwelling may be associated with the lithospheric stretching caused by the extension stress in the northeastern margin of the Ordos Block. The extension stress may be contemporaneous with the regional extension of various stages, which is related to the Pacific subduction and the far-field effect of the Indian-Eurasian collision in the Cenozoic.
