Abstract:Late Paleozoic magmatic rock outcrops are common in the Northern Alxa, Southern Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB), which is a key area for understanding tectonic processes and defining the final closure time of the Paleo-Asian Ocean (PAO). We present zircon U‒Pb chronology and whole-rock geochemistry data for late Paleozoic magmatic rocks from the Yagan area of northern Alxa. This paper reveals two periods of magmatism: syenogranite (374.8 Ma) and bimodal intrusive rocks, which consist of gabbro (261.4 Ma), diabase (262.9 Ma) and biotite monzogranite (263.4 Ma). The syenogranite is high-K calc-alkaline and shows enrichments in Th, Zr, Hf and LREEs; depletions in Sr, Nb, Ta, and Ti; and low Mg# values (6.9–13.2); the syenogranite was derived from partial melting of the crust and has volcanic arc characteristics. The gabbro and diabase have similar geochemical characteristics, such as enrichments in Pb, Rb, Sr, Zr, and Hf and depletions in Nb, Ta, and Ti, with positive εHf(t) values (+0.9–+2.7 and +2.6–+3.6, respectively), indicating that they originated from partial melting of depleted mantle and experienced crustal contamination during magma emplacement. The biotite monzogranite shows depletions in Nb, Ta, and Ti and εNd(t) values of -2.6 to −2.4 and resulted from partial melting of the lower crust caused by asthenospheric underplating. The bimodal intrusive rocks formed in a postcollision extensional setting. Combined with previous data, we conclude that northern Alxa was an active continental margin during the late Devonian and that the final closure of the Yagan branch ocean of the PAO occurred prior to the middle Permian.
Lithospheric structure of the Ordos Block and its boundary areas inferred from Rayleigh wave dispersion

Abstract:We have measured Rayleigh wave phase velocities of the Ordos Block and its southern and western boundary areas and inverted these data to describe the upper mantle structure. The Ordos Block was found to be characterized by distinctly high seismic velocities at depths commonly associated with a low velocity asthenosphere. To the south, abnormally slow velocity anomalies appeared in the Weihe rift, probably indicating subsolidus grain-boundary weakening effect under high temperatures near solidus instead of partial melt in the asthenosphere. An intermediate seismic velocity structure was observed beneath the Northern Qinling orogen (NQL) to the south of the Weihe rift. A thin, high velocity lid, which was probably a cratonic relic, was found under the Haiyuan arcuate tectonic region (HATR) west of the Ordos Block. A thick lithosphere was present beneath the Ordos Block (>200km) and the NQL (~140km), while a thinner lithosphere (~100km) was found beneath the HATR and the Weihe rift. The observed structural differences were likely associated with different lithospheric tectonics in the study region. Whereas the Weihe rift and the HATR had been strongly affected by Cenozoic lithospheric modification and thinning, the Ordos Block and the NQL appeared to have been much less influenced. Combined with previous studies, our results suggested that the far-field effect of the Indo–Asia collision may have played an important role in the unique lithospheric process in the study region, such as the extension of the Weihe rift, the preservation of a cratonic relic under the HATR, and the localized intense lithospheric modification of these two regions. The substantial variations of deep structure and thus contrasting rheological properties between the Ordos Block and the surrounding notable seismic belts (the HATR and Weihe rift) may be a candidate mechanism for the contrasting seismicity of the region. The lateral variations in the lithospheric structure estimated here generally agreed with changes in upper mantle deformation patterns previously derived from SKS splitting measurements.

Characteristics of Magnetic Fabrics of Jiangshan-Shaoxing Collision Belt and Its Tectonic Implications

Abstract:The study of anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) of rocks from the northern part of Jiangshan-Shaoxing collisional belt demonstrates that the minimum principal AMS axes are the most concentrated one in various types of rocks. The planar projection of the minimum axis shows that the main compressive stress lies on northwest 30°–60°, which trends dominantly in northwest-southeast of Chencai area and arc-like disperse towards both north and south of Chencai. The inclination of the minimum axis illustrates that the Huaxia block is moving northwesterly. Although the maximum axes show slightly dispersal, they are within the confidential circle. The maximum axis intersects with the lineation with a small angle, suggesting that the Jiangshan-Shaoxing collision belt be of a sinistral shear slip. By comparison with magnetic fabrics of various rocks, intensive collision of the Jiangshan-Shaoxing belt was in Late Triassic and sustained to the late Yanshanian period in the form of sinistral shear slip.

Abstract:Rock magnetism, magnetic cleaning and remanence isolation were performed on the samples from Triassic Qinglong Group and Huangmaqing Formation in Ningzhen area. Three magnetic components of Qinglong limestone were identified, they are characteristic remnant magnetization, remagnetizations of Indosinian and Yanshanian. Combined with geological evidence and the paleomagnetic results, we discussed the tectonic evolution of lower Yangtze Block since Later Paleozoic.

Abstract:Two ophiolitic melange belts in the Late Carboniferous formations have been discovered recently in the Alxa region. One is in the Engger Us fault and possesses properties of oceanic crust. The other is in the Badain Jaran fault and shows properties of a back-are basin. These two faults, together with the Yagan fault, constitute the important boundaries of tectonic units in the Alax region. The four tectonic units delimited by these faults are different in rock assemblages, metamorphism and geochemistry. They reflect the nature of tectonic environments in which they are found. The tectonic units may be traced and correlated to the eastern and western neighbouring areas. The formation and evolution process of the units and their interaction in the Alxa region may be described in terms of the evolution of the Palaeo-Mongolian Ocean and its continental margins.

Abstract:Genetic studies on the Early Paleozoic magmatism in the Alxa block is crucial for understanding the interaction processes between the Alxa block and the Paleo-Asian Ocean. We have newly identified a granite intrusion (the Gashun granite) emplaced in Middle Silurian, with a zircon U-Pb age of 432Ma. The samples collected from this granite are weakly peraluminous, belonging to the medium-high-K calc-alkaline series, with high Sr/Y ratios and epsilon(Hf) (t) = -8.8 similar to -19.4, which suggests that the Gashun granite should be formed by melting of ancient lower crustal rocks. Based on the major and trace element compositions of Late Ordovician to Early Devonian magmatic rocks in the Alxa block, two genetic types of magmatic rocks have been identified: Type I, emplaced during Late Ordovician to Early and Middle Silurian, are typical arc magmatic rocks formed by partial melting of mantle wedge metasomatized by fluids from subducting slab; Type II, emplaced during Middle and Late Silurian to Early Devonian, are characterized by high Sr/Y ratios resulted from partial melting of ancient intermediate to mafic crustal materials. The magmatism in the Alxa block transitioned from mantle-derived typical arc magmatic rocks during Late Ordovician-Early and Middle Silurian to crust-derived high Sr/Y-type granites during Middle and Late Silurian-Early Devonian, and then gradually disappeared, reflecting that the Alxa block transformed from a relatively extensional continental arc to a compressional arc. This magmatic evolutionary process recorded that either a subduction of Paleo-Asian Ocean beneath the Alxa block were gradually weakening and ceasing, or a transition of the subduction angle from steep to flat happened during the Late Ordovician to Early Devonian. In general, the Alxa block was under an overall increasingly compressional dynamic background in Early Paleozoic.
Early to Middle Paleozoic Magmatism and Metamorphism in the Alxa Block and Its Northern Margin: Implications for the Western Extension of the Bainaimiao Arc

Abstract:The Early to Middle Paleozoic tectonic evolution of the Alxa block is still unclear due to the sporadic outcropping of magmatic rocks and widespread coverage by the Mesozoic to Cenozoic sedimentary rocks or sediments, which makes it difficult to contrast and connect the northern margin of the Alxa block with the adjacent tectonic units. We address this key issue using new geochronological and geochemical analyses of the Early to Middle Paleozoic igneous and metamorphic rocks from the Alxa Block and its northern margin. Early Paleozoic plutons outcropping on the northern margin of the Alxa Block show slightly enriched to depleted isotopic compositions and arc-related geochemical characteristics, similar to Bainaimiao arc plutons on the northern margin of the NCC, supporting the western extension of the Bainaimiao arc. In contrast, Early Paleozoic intrusive rocks (458-440 Ma) in the Alxa Block exhibit more enriched isotopic compositions and ancient model ages and were generated in a continental arc setting triggered by southward subduction of the Paleo-Asian Ocean (PAO). The meta-mafic rocks documented ca. 419-415 Ma regional metamorphic events in response to an arc-continent collision event in the northern Alxa Block. Our magmatic and metamorphic data combined with published data reveal that the linear Early to Middle Paleozoic orogenic belt is distributed along the northern margin of the Alxa Block. Similar Early to Middle Paleozoic oceanic subduction and subsequent arc-continent collision evo-lution history support that the Alxa Block was probably a part of the North China Craton during the Early Paleozoic.
Geochemistry and Nd, Sr, Pb Isotopic Characteristics of the Alkali-Rich Intrusive Rocks in Alxa Fault Block, Western Inner Mongolia and Their Implications

Abstract:The alkali-rich intrusive rocks in Alxa Fault Block are characterized by (1) supersaturation of silica, (with appearance of quartz and concentrations of SiO_2 reaching 62.01%~67.28%), (2) meta-aluminum((wt% Al_2O_3=)12.20%~16.83%), (3) alkali-rich (wt% K_2O+Na_2O=11.14%~14.18% and the Rittmann Index (σ) varing from 6.40 to 8.65), (4) potassium-rich (K_2O/Na_2O=1.01~1.79) and (5) low concentrations of Fe and Mg. The total rare earth element concentrations (∑REE) of the rocks are relatively high, with the REE patterns being sub parallel and with strong LREE enrichment. Multi-element spidergrams exhibit strong LILE and LREE enrichments and Nb, Ta, Ti, P depletion . The (above) together with low Nd (e(Nd,t)=-7.3~-9.4) and high Sr (e(Sr,t) =(+53.9~+99.9)) indicate that these rocks originated from an enriched upper mantle but were contaminated by crustally derived materials. Nd, Sr and Pb plots show that the alkali-rich intrusive rocks in Alxa have common features with Indosinian alkali-rich intrusives in Yanliao-Yinshan area. However, they are different from alkali-rich intrusive rocks from the north margin of the Tarim Block.The spatial and temporal distribution data, the isotopic characteristics and the geodynamic settings support the conclusion that the Alxa alkaline-rich intrusive rocks are the westward extension of the Indosinian alkaline-rich intrusion belt of the northern margin in North China Block. The Alxa Fault Block and the North China Block at least since the Late Paleozoic to Indosinian period.

Abstract:The ages of diabase outcropping on the southern Alxa Block and in related tectonic setting are not well constrained, but are important for exploring the tectonic evolution of the southern Alxa Block. The ages of the zircons from the diabase intruding the Middle–Late Cambrian Xiangshan Group were measured using sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe II (SHRIMPII) and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), and the weighted mean ages of 276.8 ± 7.9 Ma and 276.2 ± 9.7 Ma were obtained, respectively. The major elements in the diabase indicate that it may belong to the tholeiitic series. With specific features of the rare earth elements (REEs) and trace elements, potentially affected by the continental crust based on the observed strong positive Pb anomaly, the diabase was produced in an intra-plate extension environment. Similar diabase/basalts were also found along the southern margin of the Alxa Block. Combined with sedimentary, palaeo-current, mafic, and felsic rocks in the southern Alxa Block, a back-arc extension environment potentially occurred in the southern Alxa Block during the Early–Middle Permian that resulted from the convergence between the North China Block (NCB) and the Yangtze Block.

Deep electrical structure from the southern margin of the North China Craton to the Cathaysia block in eastern China

Abstract:Two magnetotelluric profiles have been deployed between the southern margin of the North China Craton and the Cathaysia Block. The electrical structure models along these two profiles with a depth range of 0 similar to 100 km were obtained by two-dimensional (Nonlinear Conjugate Gradient) NLCG inversion. Combining with the geological and geophysical data of the study area, we thoroughly analyzed the characteristics of the electrical resistivity structure and the geological implications for the crust and upper mantle evolution. The results revealed that : (1) The low resistivity anomaly in the Jiangshan-Shaoxing fault zone may be caused by the upwelling of deep hot mantle. (2) In the southern margin of the North China Craton, the middle and lower crust and the top of the upper mantle show low resistivity anomalies, and there may exist a large area of weak thin layer or local melts. In the Middle and Lower Reaches of the Yangtze River Metallogenic Belt, there is a high-conductivity layer that may be caused by aqueous fluids. (3) The resistive crust of the Cathaysia Block is closely related to the tectonomagmatic activity of the Late Mesozoic. And the high resistivity anomaly in the upper mantle of the Cathaysia Block may imply basaltic magmatism. The westward subduction of the paleo-Pacific plate is the dynamic background of the late Mesozoic tectonic activity of the Cathaysian block.
Crust and uppermost mantle electrical structure beneath Qilianshan Orogenic Belt and Alxa block in northeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau

Abstract:A 372 km long magnetotelluric sounding profile was completed from the east part of Qilianshan orogenic belt to the south margin of Alax block in the northeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau. The crust and uppermost mantle electrical structural model along this profile was obtained by two dimensional NLCG inversion calculation. Integrating the geological and geophysical data of the study area, the results revealed that (1) The Qilianshan orogenic belt, the corridor transition zone and the Alax block correspond to three types of crust and uppermost mantle electrical structural models which are the eastern part of Qilianshan high-low-high resistivity stratoid electrical structure, Hexi Corridor low resistivity belt electrical structure and the southern margin of Alxa block high-low-high resistivity layered structure, respectively. (2) The major faults that are crossed by the profile appear as apparent low resistivity anomaly belts or electrical gradient zones on electrical structure image, and most of them terminate in mid or upper crust, or disappear in low resistivity layer distributed in low crust. In addition to these mid and upper crust faults system mentioned above, there are two crust-mantle ductile shear zones located in low crust and uppermost mantle, which cut the Moho. They are the northern margin of Xihuashan crust-mantle ductile shear zone and the southern margin of Alax crust-mantle ductile shear zone, the former may be one of the deep backgrounds of the Haiyuan M(s)8.6 earthquake, and the latter may be the channel for mantle-derived magma upwelling to shallow crust or erupting to surface during late Yanshan and Himalaya in Weiningbeishan, which provide deep electrical structure evidence for searching the late Mesozoic to Cenozoic ore-bearing concealed rocks in this area. (3) The crustal electrical structure consisting of a number of irregularly shaped, unconnected "fragmented" extremely high resistivity blocks in mid-upper crust and stratoid low resistivity layer in mid-low crust is one of the optimal crustal structures for strong and destructive earthquakes occurrence in the northeast margin of Tibet Plateau. The northeast direction lateral expansion of the Tibetan Plateau caused by Indian plate subduction-collision-wedge towards the Eurasian plate and the southward subduction-collision-wedge of the Alax block together make up the dynamic background of the strong earthquake active zones in the northeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau.
An Iterative Travel Time Inversion and Waveform Modeling Method to Determine the Crust Structure and Focal Mechanism: Case Study of

Abstract:The boundary region between Alxa Block and Ordos Block is an area of stress concentration with strong seismicity and frequent small earthquakes. However, the knowledge of this area is limited since only a few seismic stations were deployed in this area. The 2015 Ms5.8 Alxa Left Banner Earthquake on April 15 is the largest one occurred in the surroundings since the 1976 Ms6.2 Bayinmuren Earthquake. Abundant stations built in the northern part of Chinese North-South Seismic Belt recorded this event sequence well within short distances, which provides us a great opportunity to carry out studies. We use these data to obtain a mean 1-D layered velocity structure via iterative inversion based on both travel time and waveform misfits. Then we use the travel time difference between data and synthetic seismograms to relocate the epicenter. Finally we invert the best double-couple focal mechanism and centroid depths of the source. As the result, the source was located at (39.7663°N, 106.4304°E) with a depth of 18 km and Mw 5.25. Nodal plane 1 had strike 176°, dip angle 85°and slip angle-180°, while plane 2 had strike 86°, dip angle 90°and slip angle-5°. Considering the tectonic characteristics of regional fault zone, we believe this earthquake was caused by a nearly pure left-lateral strike-slip fault with a slight normal component, while the nodal plane 2 striking towards NEE (near E-W) was the fault plane. The seismogenic structure was likely to be an E-W striking buried fault nearby. From our study, the corresponding fault of this event may indicate all groups of faults with same E-W strike has the common character of large-dip left-lateral strike slip. Moreover, there may be some buried faults being newly born or not found yet. These results could be an important supplement to the future research of regional seismicity and modern fault zone structure.

Abstract:The electrical resistivity of subsurface rocks is one of the important sensitive parameters characterizing the internal physics of the Earth. Currently, research on subsurface electrical structures using geomagnetic sounding methods primarily focuses on two approaches: the first is based on observations from a few geomagnetic stations, which have low spatial resolution and cannot effectively describe the distribution of anomalies; the second is based on mobile geomagnetic observations, which have low temporal resolution and cannot promptly reflect anomalies. To address these issues, this study deployed a dense geomagnetic array for long-term observation in the southern segment of the Xiaojiang Fault Zone in the Yuxi area of southern Yunnan. This setup aims to promptly capture seismic magnetic anomalies, providing more data support and fundamental information for short-term earthquake prediction. Based on the long-term observation data from the dense array, the study of the subsurface electrical structure is carried out. The results indicate that during the observation period, which was seismically quiet, the regional subsurface electrical structure remained stable. A large-scale subsurface low-resistivity body was observed in the region, and the electrical structures at the two ends of the southern segment of the Xiaojiang Fault Zone were found to be completely different.

Abstract:Recent geological, geochemical and geophysical data have inclined to support the presence of a remnant Paleozoic oceanic lithosphere beneath the Western Junggar, southwestern Chinese Altaids. However, regional high-resolution geophysical data have been rarely deployed to image its geometry, making it difficult to trace its evolution and final geodynamic setting. Presently, two magnetotelluric (MT) profiles are deployed across the northwest margin of the Junggar basin and the southern Darbut belt to image the electrical structure of the crust and lithospheric mantle. High-quality data at 102 sites and the quasi-2D indications of phase tensor skew angles and impedance phase ellipses for relatively short periods (up to 500s) allow us to invert the two profile data by a 2-D scheme. The resistivity cross-section of a NW-SE striking LINE2 sheds light on a fossil intraoceanic subduction system, and reveals the Miaoergou intrusions as a bowl-like pluton, indicating that the multi-phase intrusions primarily formed in a post-collisional setting. The resistivity cross-section of striking NE-SW LINE1 reveals a possible oceanic slab with relatively lower resistivity underlying the low-resistivity sedimentary strata and high-resistivity mélange. Given that the profile of LINE1 cuts the out-rise zone of a subducted slab developed during the late Paleozoic, the 2-D resistivity model may thus represent the zone that have experienced heterogeneous deformation, reflecting subduction with barrier variation parallel to the ancient trench. Moreover, as shown in previous results, the new MT data also illustrate that the Darbut Fault is a thin-skinned structure, which has been erased at depths during the subsequent magmatism.
Electrical structure of the eastern segment of the Qilian orogenic belt revealed by 3-D inversion of magnetotelluric data: New insights into the evolution of the northeastern margin of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Abstract:<p>The eastern segment of the Qilian orogenic belt, composed of the Linxia block and the Longzhong block, is located at the northeastern margin of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. The area has experienced multiple tectonic events, such as the closure of the Qilian Ocean, the convergence of the North China block and the Qilian terrane, and the collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates, forming a complex tectonic framework. To investigate the geological evolution of the area and the current location of the suture between the plates, we performed three-dimensional inversion of magnetotelluric data acquired along two profiles in the eastern segment of the Qilian orogenic belt using a nonlinear conjugate gradient algorithm to obtain electrical resistivity structure models to 60-km depth. The results include three key findings. <a class="workspace-trigger" href="#e0005">(1)</a> The Linxia block was originally a Japanese-type island arc with a mainly low-resistivity structure, which corresponds to deformed, fractured middle and lower crust that contains saline fluids. (2) The Longzhong block was originally a Mariana-type island arc and has a resistive structure with good integrity, consistent with crust composed of ocean island basalt. (3) The Maxianshan fault, shown as a belt with a steep gradient in electrical resistivity model, is a supracrustal fault that acts as a suture between the Japanese-type island arc (now the Linxia block) and the Mariana-type island arc (now the Longzhong block).</p>
