Abstract:In an effort to further advance our understanding of the evolution of the Sulu–Dabie orogen and its complex interactions with the Tanlu fault, and to tackle non-unique geophysical interpretations, we characterize the 3D geological structures and dynamics of the Sulu–Dabie orogen and its environs using various data processing and interpretation of a very large suite of gravimetric, magnetic, magnetotelluric, geothermal, and seismic data. We have modeled regional geothermal field of the lithosphere by incorporating both surface heat flow and Curie-point depths inverted from magnetic anomalies. This gives better constraints on regional thermal lithospheric thicknesses, which are found to be small (mostly between 55 and 95km), conformable to other geophysical results, and supportive of lithospheric de-rooting. From regional geotherms and Bouguer gravity anomalies, we assess depths, temperatures and heat flow of the Moho, and find that mantle contributes a little over 70% of the total surface heat flow. Large differences in thermal lithospheric thicknesses and geothermal activities are found between the Sulu and the Dabie segments of the Sulu–Dabie orogen. These differences result, at least partially, from large vertical differential movement at the lithospheric scale across the Tanlu fault, as seen from both reflection seismic sections and gravity anomalies. Within the Sulu–Dabie orogenic belt, reduction to the pole and 3D analytic signal analysis on magnetic anomalies reveal that positive magnetic anomalies associated with this belt are most due to gneiss, migmatite and Mesozoic granites, whereas ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic zones show weak or negative magnetic anomalies. This interesting magnetic contrast between ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic rocks and surrounding rocks suggests that ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic minerals are either only weakly magnetized, or possibly retrograded and remagnetized over a long time span or in a period of reversed magnetization. High-pressure metamorphic minerals of blueschist facies appear to be less susceptive than ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic minerals.

Abstract:The Beishan orogenic belt,locating in the south of the Central Asian orogenic belt(CAOB),witnesses a panoramic scenario of continental crustal accretion and reworking in the model of plate tectonics during the Paleozoic-Triassic.It is driven by rifting-spreading-extinction cycle of paleo-oceans and subduction-collision-extension processes at convergent plate margin,with a series of the associated magmatic events.The generation of syn-and post-orogenic granitoids represents horizontal(lateral) and vertical crustal growth.Based on an overview on the geochronological and geochemical data concerning the Paleozoic magmatic rocks from the Liuyuan area,the paper outlines the evolved geodynamic scenarios inherent in these magmatic sequences,reveals multi-stage crustal accretion and reworking mechanism during the Paleozoic continental construction in south Beishan belt and promises magmatic and tectonic reservoirs for metallogenesis.
Crust and upper mantle structure of the North China Craton and the NE Tibetan Plateau and its tectonic implications

Abstract:Understanding the Mesozoic–Cenozoic tectonic evolution of the North China Craton (NCC) and the NE Tibetan Plateau (TP) requires detailed knowledge of the lithospheric structure. Using dense regional networks and temporary deployments as well as updated reference models, we obtain the crust and upper mantle structure to 120km depth. Our tomographic results show several major features, which have particular implications for the Weihe–Shanxi rift system (WSRS), deformation of the NE TP, and lithospheric evolution of the NCC. Beneath the WSRS, the crust gradually thickens from south to north, the lithospheric mantle gradually becomes slower, and the mid-lower crustal velocities are lower in the Weihe Rift, where rifting of the WSRS initiated. We suggest that along-strike variations of the lithospheric structures of the WSRS have played an important role in its multistage evolution. A low-velocity zone (LVZ) in the mid-crust beneath the Qilian Orogen is characterized by relatively higher velocities compared to LVZs in other parts of the TP. Thus, coherent lithospheric deformation may occur due to the high viscosity of the LVZ during early plateau growth, causing strong anisotropy to develop. The western NCC (including the Ordos Block and part of the Alashan Block) shows a high-velocity cratonic root extending to the base of our model. In contrast, the lithosphere of the eastern NCC appears to have been completely modified during the Mesozoic through Cenozoic and presents a thin lithosphere of relatively low velocities underlain by hot asthenosphere. We observed significant upper-mantle heterogeneities in the NCC, which may reflect its diachronous lithospheric modification.
Magnetic Zoning and Seismic Structure of the South China Sea Ocean Basin

Abstract:We made a systematic investigation on major structures and tectonic units in the South China Sea basin based on a large magnetic and seismic data set. For enhanced magnetic data interpretation, we carried out various data reduction procedures, including upward continuation, reduction to the pole, 3D analytic signal and power spectrum analyses, and magnetic depth estimation. Magnetic data suggest that the South China Sea basin can be divided into five magnetic zones, each with a unique magnetic pattern. Zone A corresponds roughly to the area between Taiwan Island and a relict transform fault, zone B is roughly a circular feature between the relict transform fault and the northwest sub-basin, and zones C, D, and E are the northwest sub-basin, the east sub-basin, and the southwest sub-basin, respectively. This complexity in basement magnetization suggests that the South China Sea evolved from multiple stages of opening under different tectonic settings. Magnetic reduction also fosters improved interpretation on continental margin structures, such as Mesozoic and Cenozoic sedimentary basins and the offshore south China magnetic anomaly. We also present, for the first time, interpretations of three new 2D reflection seismic traverses, which are of ~2,000 km in total length and across all five magnetic zones. Integration of magnetic and seismic data enables us to gain a better 3D mapping on the basin structures. It is shown that the transition from the southwest sub-basin to the east sub-basin is characterized by a major ridge formed probably along a pre-existing fracture zone, and by a group of primarily west-dipping faults forming an exact magnetic boundary between zones D and E. The northwest sub-basin has the deepest basement among the three main sub-basins (i.e., the northwest sub-basin, the southwest sub-basin, and the east sub-basin). Our seismic data also reveal a strongly faulted continent–ocean transition zone of about 100 km wide, which may become wider and dominated with magmatism or transit to an oceanic crust further to the northeast.
Research progress on seismic structures of crust and mantle beneath Tien Shan and their geodynamic implications

Abstract:The mechanisms causing the uplifting of the Tien Shan, one of the largest and most active intracontinental orogenic belts on Earth, have been vigorously debated for decades. Seismic investigation is a fundamental tool used for deep structural exploration and is key to understanding continental geodynamics. As such, in this study, we reviewed the recent research progress on the crustal and upper-mantle structures of the Tien Shan and the remaining controversies. The results showed that the Tien Shan and adjacent basins exhibit contrasting structural and physical properties from the crust down to the upper mantle in various aspects, such as crustal thickness, Moho morphology, mantle transition-zone thickness, seismic velocity, and seismic attenuation. The mountainous areas have complex crustal seismic anisotropy patterns, whereas orogen-parallel anisotropic fabrics dominate at upper mantle depths. Low-velocity anomalies pervasively exist in the mid-lower crust and uppermost mantle of Tien Shan. Taken together, these observations provide evidence of the important roles played by intracontinental subduction and mantle upwelling in Cenozoic orogenesis of the Tien Shan. However, further development of our understanding of the geodynamics in Tien Shan has been hindered by the low imaging resolution of seismic anisotropy, lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary, and mantle transition zone in eastern Tien Shan. And some important geophysical parameters and their implications are still far from being well-understood. Future deployment of dense temporary seismic arrays in the eastern Tien Shan and joint inversion of multiple and complementary geophysical data will considerably increase the resolution of seismic models and ultimately enhance our knowledge of geodynamic evolution in compressional intracontinental orogens.

Abstract:Timing, distribution, and intensity of magmatism are critical to understanding deep lithospheric processes in the opening of the South China Sea (SCS). Based primarily on multichannel seismic reflection data, and aided with gravity and magnetic anomalies, we identify various igneous features, such as sills, stocks, volcanic edifices, and volcanoes, which are often characterized by high positive seismic amplitudes, and/or by chaotic or blank reflections beneath them because of their seismic shielding effect. We estimate the timing of igneous activities and analyze their areal distribution in the SCS region based on seismic stratigraphy. We confirm that most igneous emplacements in the SCS margins occurred after the cessation of seafloor spreading, and are sparse and volumetrically small during the rifting and seafloor spreading phases, supporting magma-poor margins prior to the breakup of the continental lithosphere. By contrast, post-spreading magmatic activities are widespread in the continental slope areas and in the central SCS basin, and are most likely triggered by extension in relation to cooling and subsidence of the oceanic and attenuated continental lithosphere, which could accumulate a total thermal contractional displacement up to 24km.

How Did the Dabie Orogen Collapse? Insights from 3‐D Magnetotelluric Imaging of Profile Data

Abstract:The Dabie Orogen is a key part of the Central Orogen of China and is well known because of its exposures to high- and ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic rocks. It has been proposed to have formed by continent-continent collision between the Yangtze and North China blocks in the Middle-to-Late Triassic and to have collapsed in the middle of the Early Cretaceous. However, there are few signatures in the lithospheric architecture that might constrain the scale of the orogenic collapse; as a result there has been a long-term debate on its origin. A 300 km long broadband magnetotelluric transect perpendicular to a major collapsed structure has been completed to find some possible clues to the mechanisms of the orogenic collapse. The inverted resistivity cross section from 3-D inversion of magnetotelluric profile data refines the postcollision lithospheric structure and in particular identifies domains of refertilized and depleted lithospheric mantle and isolated midcrustal low-velocity and high-conductivity zones. A correlation between voluminous surface magmatism in the Early Cretaceous and deep refertilized lithospheric mantle is illuminated by elevated electrical conductivity. We suggest that the lowermost crust was removed by delamination beneath the eastern Dabie during the orogenic collapse, while beneath the Tongbai-Xinyang Terrain residual cratonic crust is underlain by depleted lithospheric mantle with relatively high resistivity. The isolated low-velocity and high-conductivity zones in the middle crust have been ascribed to shear-promoted graphitic films which were destroyed by local granitic intrusions around 134 to 125Ma. This lithospheric process can be attributed to far-field effects, such as refertilization in the lower lithospheric mantle, promoted by upwelling of the asthenosphere and related fluids, during Paleo-Pacific subduction beneath the Euro-Asian continent.
Magnetotelluric Evidence for Lithospheric Alteration Beneath the Wuyi‐Yunkai Orogen: Implications for Thermal Structure of South China

Abstract:The Wuyi-Yunkai Orogen experienced a polyphase tectonomagmatism and is a key region for deciphering the alteration and thermal structure of the South China Block lithosphere. Herein, an electrical resistivity model of the lithosphere is presented via the three-dimensional inversion of broadband (0.003-3600 s) magnetotelluric (MT) data collected along a 380-km-long profile comprising 62 MT sites across the Wuyi-Yunkai Orogen, and the robustness of this model is critically evaluated through a series of sensitivity tests. The resistivity model reveals that the upper crust of the Cathaysia Block and the Wuyi-Yunkai Orogen is dominated by high-resistivity sedimentary cover interposed with low-resistivity features, mainly along fault zones. High-resistivity bodies and strong conductors in the upper crust are interpreted as magmatic rocks and tectonic melanges, respectively. Another feature of this resistivity model is the presence of zones featuring enhanced electrical conductivity (<30 omega m) extending from the lower crust to the upper mantle beneath the Wuyi-Yunkai Orogen. The conductors in the lower crust are attributed to saline fluids from either the dehydration of the subducting Paleo-Pacific slab or the regional metamorphism-induced dehydration of sandy argillaceous rocks. In contrast, the conductors in the upper mantle are attributed to 4%-7% partial melt, which corresponds to the analyses of mantle xenoliths in South China. These conductors in the upper crust and upper mantle supply volatiles and heat to shallow geothermal systems. This work ultimately shows that the lithospheric thinning of South China is controlled mainly by mantle upwelling caused by the retreat of the subducting Paleo-Pacific slab.
Lithospheric Structures Across the Qiman Tagh and Western Qaidam Basin Revealed by Magnetotelluric Data Collected Using a Self-Developed SEP System

Abstract:Geophysics offers an important means to investigate the physical processes occurring inside the earth. In particular,since the 1960 s, electromagnetic(EM) methods have played important roles in mineral exploration and engineering investigation. Such investigation requires extensive data acquisition and experimental analysis based on geophysical techniques.However, high-performance geophysical equipment, particularly EM exploration equipment, has been dominated by large geophysical companies from the United States, Canada, Germany, and other European countries for decades. This has limited the development of deep exploration technology in China. Recently, we have developed a high-resolution acquisition system with a wireless control unit and a high-power transmitting system for surface EM prospecting(SEP). The new system has been tested in the high-intensity, noisy environment in Jian-sanjiang area, Heilongjiang Province. We then conducted a field survey on the western edge of Qaidam Basin, Qinghai Province. A highly conductive anomaly was found in the upper mantle below the Qinmantage Mountains, which indicates a possible northward fluid channel that runs from below the Qinmantage Mountains to the bottom of the western crust of the Qaidam Basin. Identification of this significant feature was made possible by the new SEP for its better resolution than the previous systems. Also, geophysical analysis confirmed that the thick Cenozoic sediments of the Qaidam Basin are underlain by rigid Precambrian basement rocks and are characterized by a series of folds. The resistivity profile indicates that the Qaidam Basin was formed due to the folding structures in the northern part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau which provided an additional evidence for the uplifting of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
The tectonic evolution of the southern segment of Tancheng-Lujiang fault zone and the metallogenesis in its adjacent region: Implications from the high precision geochronology

Abstract:Tancheng-Lujiang(Tan-Lu)fault zone is a lithospheric deep fault zone with the trending of NNE-NE in eastern China. There are four concentrated mineral areas which including Au mine of Jiaodong Peninsula,Fe-Au mine of western Shangdong Province,Fe-Cu mine of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and oil and gas field of northern Jiangsu Province. Based on a large amount of high precision dating data,the tectono-magmatic-mineralization events of these areas can be classified into three phases: 1)Early phase(800～550 Ma). In this phase,pan-paleocontinent breakup commenced in Neoproterozoic,paleo-seism occurred in Caledonian and local volcanic-sedimentary exhalative in shallow marine environments in Hercynian demonstrated that the "tectonic activity prelude" of crustal movement had been unclosed. The prior tectonic weakness belt of North China Craton lithosphere was succeeded and constructed in this phase,which can described as metallogenesis preparation period. 2)Main phase(180～110 Ma). The present tectonic frame of Tan-Lu fault zone was accomplished by continent collision of Yangtze Plate and northern China Plate in Triassic,and dive of west Pacific Plate in Mesozoic to Eurasian Plate. Especially in around 140～120 Ma,calc-alkaline,high-K and high Sr calc-alkaline magmas as well as metallogenesis fluids in the late stages of magmatism ascent made violent activities and deposited as metallogenesis along favourite tectonic space. Crustal thinning,crust-mantle delamination and mantle-derived magma underplating led to the appearance of syntexis-type and transformation-type granites which is not due to any single tectonic movement. This phrase can be described as summit grade. 3)Late phase(60 Ma～now). There is usually olive-basalt spouting along the junctions of EW and NNE(or NE)trending faults,which offers heat and material sources for the formation of oil and gas. Paleozoic Tectonics of the Southern Chinese Tianshan: Insights from Structural, Chronological and Geochemical Studies of the Heiyingshan Ophiolitic Mélange (NW China)

Abstract:In the southern Chinese Tianshan, the southernmost part of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB), widespread ophiolitic melanges form distinct tectonic units that are crucial for understanding the formation of the CAOB. However, the timing of tectonic events and the subduction polarity are still in controversy. In order to better understand these geological problems, a comprehensive study was conducted on the Heiyingshan ophiolitic melange in the SW Chinese Tianshan. Detailed structural analysis reveals that the ophiolitic melange is tectonically underlain by sheared and weakly metamorphosed pre-Middle Devonian rocks, and unconformably overlain by non-metamorphic and undeformed lower Carboniferous (Serpukhovian) to Permian strata. The igneous assemblage of the melange comprises OIB-like alkali basalt and andesite, N-MORB-like tholeiitic basalt, sheeted diabase dikes, cumulate gabbro and peridotite. Mafic rocks display supra-subduction signatures, and some bear evidence of contamination with the continental crust, suggesting a continental marginal (back-arc) basin setting. Zircons of a gabbro were dated at 392 +/- 5 Ma by the U-Pb LA-ICP-MS method. Famennian-Visean radiolarian microfossils were found in the siliceous matrix of the ophiolitic melange. Mylonitic phyllite which displays northward-directed kinematic evidence yielded muscovite Ar-40/Ar-39 plateau ages of 359 +/- 2 Ma and 356 +/- 2 Ma.These new data, combined with previously published results, suggest that the mafic protoliths originally formed in a back-arc basin in the Chinese southern Tianshan during the late Silurian to Middle Devonian and were subsequently incorporated into the ophiolitic melange and thrust northward during the Late Devonian to early Carboniferous. Opening of the back-arc basin was probably induced by south-dipping subduction of the Paleo-Tianshan Ocean in the early Paleozoic, and the Central Tianshan block was rifted away from the Tarim block. Closure of the back-arc basin in the early Carboniferous formed the South Tianshan Suture Zone and reamalgamated the two blocks. (c) 2010 Elsevier BM. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The West Qinling Orogenic Belt (WQOB) in central China records the tectonic evolution and deep geodynamics process associated with plate collision on the northeastern margin of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. The study of the deep–seated West Qinling structure is beneficial for revealing the evolution of the West Qinling crust during the continental collision orogeny, and also has significance for mineral exploration. In this study, the crustal structure and the distribution of major faults in the West Qinling Orogen are calculated by processing geophysical aeromagnetic and ground gravity data. The density and magnetic susceptibility differences between the West Qinling crust and the upper mantle are calculated by fitting, and the depth and trend of the faults related are inferred from the gravity and magnetic inversion results. Due to the overall subduction of the lower crust of the Ruoergai to the West Qinling Orogenic Belt, the structural deformation within the West Qinling is strong, and the geophysical magnetic field and gravity field are suddenly changed. It is indicated that the formation of the Diebu–Sanhe fault may have a strong correlation with the Mianlue suture zone, and their intersection may penetrate into the lower crust at a depth of about 50 km or more. The West Qinling structure represents important conduits for migrating magmatic–derived hydrothermal fluids. During the continental collision, the West Qinling major faults provided hydrothermal migration channels for ore–forming materials in different tectonic periods. Meanwhile, multiple the geological activities led to the formation of mineral deposits related to magmatic hydrothermal fluids.

Abstract:The Chinese Tianshan Belt is one of the key regions for the understanding of tectonics of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB). An international field excursion and workshop were organized to conduct a common observation and discussion on the tectonic evolution of the Chinese Tianshan. This report summarizes the main achievements, including acknowledged geological features, controversial and remaining scientific problems, and discussion of a tentative geodynamic model. Thus, it is helpful to clarify what has been done in the past, what should be improved and what needs to be done in the future and therefore to better understand the tectonics of the Chinese Tianshan Belt and the CAOB as well.
Lithospheric electrical structure and its implications for the evolution of the middle Qinling Orogenic Belt, Central China: Constraints from 3-D magnetotelluric imaging

Abstract:The Qinling Orogenic Belt is located at the central part of the China Central Orogenic Belt and links the Qilian and Kunlun Orogenic Belts to the west with the Dabie-Sulu Orogenic Belt to the east, which is sandwiched between the South China Block and North China Block. There have been several geodynamic models developed to explain the evolution process of the Qinling Orogenic Belt, but they remain controversial. The magnetotelluric (MT) method can study subsurface electrical structures. In order to have a better understanding of the tectonic evolution of the Qinling Orogenic Belt, a study of broadband and long period MT profile across the middle Qinling Orogenic Belt is carried out. The MT profile starts from the northeastern margin of the Sichuan basin, crosses the Qinling, and finally reaches the Weihe basin at about 108.5°E. Based on data analysis results, we have finally obtained a lithospheric electrical resistivity model of the middle Qinling Orogenic Belt through three-dimensional (3-D) inversion of magnetotelluric data. The MT result reveals that the Sichuan and Weihe basins may have remnants of the ancient craton basement in our study area. The electrical structure characteristics of the South Qinling Belt and North Qinling Belt are obviously different, the South Qinling Belt is relatively low resistivity, while the North Qinling Belt is relatively high resistivity. This may indicate that the Southern Qinling Belt is affected by the later strike slip extrusion and the Northern Qinling Belt is a relatively stable block. The lithospheric mantle of middle Qinling Orogenic Belt is characterized by overall high resistivity, which may indicate that the lateral extrusion effect of the Tibetan Plateau material is negligible in this region.

Electrical structure of the fault system in the Tangyin graben, eastern margin of the Taihangshan uplift, China: Inferences from magnetotelluric imaging

Abstract:We present three-dimensional magnetotelluric images across the southern segment of the Taihangshan uplift and the Tangyin graben. Distinct electrical structures are recognized between these two regions. The upper crust of the southern segment of the Taihangshan uplift is characterized by a high resistivity structure, and the underlying middle and lower crust contain a high conductivity layer. On the eastern side of the uplift, the upper crust contains a high conductivity structure in the Tangyin graben and a high resistivity structure in the Neihuang uplift. The lower crust is dominated by a single coherent high resistivity structure. The Tangxi fault, Tangdong fault, and the western margin fault of the Neihuang uplift collectively form a flower structure, wherein the Tangdong fault is dominant. Three-dimensional inversion is also carried out for magnetotelluric profiles across the central-northern segment of the Taihangshan uplift and the Shijiazhuang-Jinxian depression to serve as a comparison for the southern portion of the Taihangshan uplift. The central-northern segment of the Taihangshan uplift is characterized by a high resistivity structure. The upper crust of the Shijiazhuang-Jinxian depression is characterized by a combination of a high conductivity graben and a high resistivity adjacent uplift. The deep electrical structure of the Tangdong fault and the associated concealed subvertical electrical boundary zone are quite similar to the electrical structure in the vicinity of the 1966 Xingtai earthquake. We conclude that the existence of tectonic conditions in the middle and lower crust of the Tangyin graben might be capable of creating moderate to strong earthquakes.

Abstract:The formation of magnetic minerals is bound up with the tectonic evolution history, whereupon the distribution of magnetic anomalies has great meanings for regional tectonics. In this study, we use the latest global lithospheric magnetic field model EMAG2-v3, processed by various techniques including reduction to the pole (RTP), upward continuation, derivations, Euler deconvolution, estimation of total magnetization direction, and Curie point depth (CPD), to unveil the tectonics around Longmenshan fault zone (LFZ). LFZ is clearly displayed as a positive and negative anomaly transition zone in RTP anomalies and acts as a magnetic basement boundary. The Sichuan Basin (SB), located to the east of LFZ, is marked by strong magnetic basement and NE-strike banded induced positive anomalies which are associated with the Neoproterozoic magmatic activity. The banded shape, absence of radial pattern of anomalies, and existence of fossil subduction zone supports that the magnetic basement was formed in arc environment. The CPD in SB estimated by radial average power spectral is 30-51 km, which allows magnetic minerals in deep crust or even in lithospheric mantle to exhibit high magnetizations. The Songpan-Ganzi fold belt (SGFB), in contrast, is located to the west of LFZ and covered by thick and low-susceptibility Triassic deposits of flysch, manifests as weak negative anomalies caused by relatively shallow CPD and widespread remanent magnetization. Significant positive anomalies, appearing around the Manai and Rilonguan granitic massifs, indicate a strong magnetic basement beneath SGFB, which is conjectured as westward extension of the Yangtze Block at depth.

Abstract:The South Tianshan is located to the north of the Tarim block and defines the southern margin of the Paleozoic Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB). This study presents new structural data, geochronological and geochemical results for the Wuwamen ophiolite melange in the Chinese segment of the South Tianshan. In the south, the Wuwamen ophiolite melange shows typical block-in-matrix fabrics and occurs in the footwall of a south-dipping thrust fault, hanging wall of which is composed of weakly metamorphosed and deformed Lower Paleozoic marine to deep marine sequences from the South Tianshan. In the north, a southdipping thrust fault juxtaposes the Wuwamen ophiolite melange in its hanging wall against the high-grade and strongly deformed metasedimentary rocks from the Central Tianshan in its footwall.
