Abstract:High entropy alloys have captivated so much attention in the field of thermoelectric due to their superior electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties. In this work, we report improved thermoelectric properties of Ti2NiCoSnSb1-x Bi x high entropy alloy, synthesized by vacuum arc melting followed by ball milling and induction hot-press. Powder X-ray diffraction pattern confirmed the C1b structure and solubility of Bi at Sb site in the Ti2NiCoSnSb matrix. Backscattered electron micrograph along with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy evidences the single phase of Ti2NiCoSnSb as a matrix with a minor content of Ni–Sn rich phase. Further, as Bi content increases, the electrical conductivity is seen to increase from ∼0.85 x105 S/m (x = 0.00) to ∼0.92 x105 S/m (x = 0.10). Subsequently, the substitution of Bi atom has considerably reduced the total thermal conductivity to ⁓4.82 W/mK at 323 K for Ti2NiCoSnSb0.90Bi0.10 from ⁓6.04 W/mK (pristine) owing to the enhanced phonon scattering from the created point defects and mass fluctuation between the Sb and Bi atom. As a result, the maximum figure of merit, zT of ⁓0.09 at 673 K is obtained for Ti2NiCoSnSb0.95Bi0.05 alloy. In addition, Ti2NiCoSnSb0.95Bi0.05 has shown a maximum hardness value of ⁓15.6 GPa, which is notably higher than the pristine sample (⁓12.01 GPa).
