Abstract:Self-supported disk surfaces of α- and γ-bismuth molybdates were examined using a conventional XPS equipped with an Ar+ ion gun, a halogen lamp for sample heating and an O2-jet instrument. Portions of Bi3+ and Mo6+ on the surfaces were reduced to Bi0 and Mo5+, respectively when Ar+-sputtering was applied. The rate of reduction of Mo6+ was faster than that of Bi3+. The reduced surfaces gradually reoxidized to their original states during heating in UHV. The reoxidation was more pronounced when the samples were exposed to an oxygen gas stream (O2-jet) at 5 × 10−6 Pa. The reoxidation rates strongly depended on the crystal structure. The ease of oxidation of Mo5+ to Mo6+ was greater than that of Bi0 to Bi3+. The logarithm of the initial rates determined at 353–393 K with or without exposure to the O2-jet was inversely proportional to the temperature. The activation energies of Bi0 and Mo5+ reoxidation were 20–24 and 30–33 kJ mol−1 for γ-BM, and 38–54, 59–74 kJ mol−1 for α-BM, respectively. The reoxidations are due to the transfer of lattice oxygen atoms from the bulk to the surface for the sample heated in UHV. Furthermore, in the case of the samples exposed to the O2-jet, the diffusive transfer of oxygen atoms from the surface to the anion vacancies in the coordination structure of Mo cations was promoted.
