Abstract:The physicists working in several areas of research know quite well the name of Ettore Majorana, since it is currently associated to fundamental concepts like {\it Majorana neutrinos} in particle physics and cosmology or {\it Majorana fermions} in condensed matter physics. But, probably, very few is known about other substantial contributions of that ingenious scholar, and even less about his personal background. For non specialists, instead, the name of Ettore Majorana is usually intimately related to the fact that he disappeared rather mysteriously on March 26, 1938, just seventy years ago, and was never seen again. The life and the work of this Italian scientist is the object of the present review, which will also offer a summary of the main results achieved in recent times by the historical and scientific researches on his work.

Abstract:In this paper we present a panoramic view of the main scientific articles published by Ettore Majorana, the brightest Italian theoretical physicist of the XX century (actually, Enrico Fermi regarded him as the brighest in the world of his time, and compared him to Galileo and Newton; even if to some people Majorana is often known mainly for his mysterious disappearance in 1938, when he was 31). Extensive information and comments are added with regard to the scientific manuscripts left unpublished by him. We also outline his life, the biographical data being based on letters, documents, testimonies discovered or collected by the author during more than four decades, and contained for instance in Recami's 1987 book quoted in the text. Two pictures complete the paper.

Abstract:This short essay aims to offer a discursive presentation of three scientific articles by Ettore Majorana highlighting the fundamental importance of one of them - the last one - for the investigation of the intimate constitution of matter. The search for evidence to support Majorana's thesis is the prime motivation of the conference "Multi-Aspect Young Oriented Advanced Neutrino Academy" at the G.P. Grimaldi Foundation in Modica, Sicily.

Abstract:Ettore Majorana was a member of Enrico Fermi's research group in Rome, Italy. Fermi did regard Majorana as much brihter than himself as far as theoretical physics was concerned (more information can be found particularly in the arXives' e-print <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="physics/9810023" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/physics/9810023">physics/9810023</a>, in Italian, and refs therein, and also in the recent multilanguage <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="0708.2855v1" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/0708.2855v1">arXiv:0708.2855v1</a> [<a class="link-external link-http" href="http://physics.hist" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>-ph]). In 1937 Majorana partecipated in the national Italian competition, for a chair in theoretical phyics, requested by Emilio Segre' at that time at Palermo University: Other competitors being <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://GC.Wick" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>, <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://G.Racah" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>, and <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://G.Gentile" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> jr. After a proposal of the judging Commette, chaired by <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://E.Fermi" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>, Majorana got a full-professorship at Naples University, for exceptional scientific merits, outside the competition normal procedures. In this e-print we make known the notes prepared by Majorana for his Inaugural Lecture (and discovered long ago, in 1973, by one of the present editors (ER)),together with some comments of ours: everything being both in English (first article) and in Italian (second article, with a short Bibliography at its end). The present articles have been prepared on the occasion of the Centenary (2006) of Majorana's birth. The preliminary notes for his Inaugural Lecture reveal Majorana's interest not only for scientific research, but also for the best didactical methods to be followed in order to teach classical and quantum physics in the most effective way (while his approach to Special Relativity is known to us from his lecture notes, published elesewhere). Abstract:In Europe (e.g., in Italy), and in the States, the opinion is widely spreading that the negative consequences of modern progress are the fault of "Science". A lively debate on this topic took place among the famous writer Leonardo Sciascia and Italian physicists like Edoardo Amaldi and Emilio Segre', when Sciascia wrote his known book about the disappearance of Ettore Majorana, a book that presented Majorana (a very reserved theoretical physicist) as an example of the scientist that keeps his discoveries secret when afraid of possible evil applications. We wish to contribute now to such a question, since many special meetings did recently return to it, while celebrating the centenary of Majorana's birth (2006), or 30 years (2005) from Sciascia's book publication. It appeared natural to us to start with the figure of Einstein, who, even if extremely peaceable, supported the atomic bomb construction by his letter to Roosvelt. We discuss first the significance of part of Einsteins's scientific work (which flourished in particular one century ago): We seize this opportunity for presenting a derivation of the "twins paradox", so simple that it has been taught to Senior High School last-year students or University undergraduate students; all the present work, more in general, is addressed mainly to them. In the second part of this paper, we analyse the general meaning of Einstein's contributions to philosophy and pedagogy. The third part is entirely devoted to our main subject, i.e., to discussing the "Responsibility of the Intellectuals". The reader interested chiefly in this last part, can find it re-expounded in a self-contained way in the Appendix. More information in the Contents of this article.

Born in 1935 in Hamburg to a Jewish family, Opitz's early life was marked by adversities. Despite these challenges, he pursued a remarkable career, immigrating to the United States at 15 years and becoming a renowned scientist in institutions like Iowa State University and the University of Wisconsin, where he made groundbreaking contributions to clinical genetics. Main body: A testament to his compassionate nature, Opitz dedicated himself to understanding and treating rare genetic disorders, earning him eponymous recognition in several medical conditions. His impact extended beyond academia, as evidenced by his collaborative efforts with Sicilian universities to advance clinical genetics in Italy. Opitz's teaching style emphasized simplicity, empathy, and meticulous clinical examination, leaving an indelible mark on students and colleagues. Conclusion: John M. Abstract:Sergio Adamo prematurely left us on January 7th 2022, just one year after his retirement, leaving his family, friends and colleagues deeply sad and grieving. Sergio was a full Professor of Histology and Embryology at the Sapienza University of Rome. Since the foundation of the Institute of Histology and Embryology more than 50 years ago, he dedicated himself to the institution, research, and teaching with integrity, generosity, and a great sense of teamwork. Sergio's main research interests have been the mechanisms of myogenesis, muscle homeostasis and regeneration under normal and pathological conditions. Most relevant results obtained by Sergio and his collaborators indicate novel functions for the neurohypophyseal hormones, vasopressin and oxytocin, upon striated muscle differentiation, trophism, and homeostasis. Here we like to give the proper tribute to a mentor, a colleague and a sincere friend. He left an indelible mark on the professional and personal lives of all of us and his absence provokes a profound sense of emptiness.

Abstract:Ugo Fano has been a leader in theoretical Physics in the XX century giving key contributions to our understanding of quantum phenomena. He passed away on 13 February 2001 after 67 years of research activity. I will focus on his prediction of the quantum interference effects to understand the high-energy photoabsorption cross section giving the Fano lineshapes. The Fano results led to the theoretical understanding of shape resonances (known also as Feshbach resonances) that should be better called Fano resonances. Finally I will show that today this Fano quantum interference effect is behind several new physical phenomena in different fields.

Abstract:In this special issue, dedicated to Martin A. Conway, we have assembled a series of papers by individuals' whose work was affected by Martin's own research. We specifically solicited empirical papers that are somehow connected to the influence that Martin had on the authors' own work or papers that review or summarise a body of their work that was influenced by Martin and his work. Martin's research, predominantly work on autobiographical memory, has had an immense impact on our understanding of human memory and will continue to influence much of memory research in the future.

Abstract:Ettore Majorana (1906-1938) disappeared while traveling by ship from Palermo to Naples in 1938. His fate has never been fully resolved and several articles have been written that explore the mystery itself. His demise intrigues us still today because of his seminal work, published the previous year, that established symmetric solutions to the Dirac equation that describe a fermionic particle that is its own anti-particle. This work has long had a significant impact in neutrino physics, where this fundamental question regarding the particle remains unanswered. But the formalism he developed has found many uses as there are now a number of candidate spin-1/2 neutral particles that may be truly neutral with no quantum number to distinguish them from their anti-particles. If such particles exist, they will influence many areas of nuclear and particle physics. Most notably the process of neutrinoless double beta decay can only exist if neutrinos are massive Majorana particles. Hence, many efforts to search for this process are underway. Majorana's influence doesn't stop with particle physics, however, even though that was his original consideration. The equations he derived also arise in solid state physics where they describe electronic states in materials with superconducting order. Of special interest here is the class of solutions of the Majorana equation in one and two spatial dimensions at exactly zero energy. These Majorana zero modes are endowed with some remarkable physical properties that may lead to advances in quantum computing and, in fact, there is evidence that they have been experimentally observed. This review first summarizes the basics of Majorana's theory and its implications. It then provides an overview of the rich experimental programs trying to find a fermion that is its own anti-particle in nuclear, particle, and solid state physics.
