Abstract:In the covariant cosmological perturbation theory, a 1+3 decomposition ensures that all variables in the frame-independent equations are covariant, gauge-invariant and have clear physical interpretations. We develop this formalism in the case of Brans-Dicke gravity, and apply this method to the calculation of cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy and large scale structures (LSS). We modify the publicly available Boltzmann code CAMB to calculate numerically the evolution of the background and adiabatic perturbations, and obtain the temperature and polarization spectra of the Brans-Dicke theory for both scalar and tensor mode, the tensor mode result for the Brans-Dicke gravity are obtained numerically for the first time. We first present our theoretical formalism in detail, then explicitly describe the techniques used in modifying the CAMB code. These techniques are also very useful to other gravity models. Next we compare the CMB and LSS spectra in Brans-Dicke theory with those in the standard general relativity theory. At last, we investigate the ISW effect and the CMB lensing effect in the Brans-Dicke theory. Constraints on Brans-Dicke model with current observational data is presented in a companion paper (paper II).

The Cosmological Impact of Brane-Chern-Simons Massive Gravity

Abstract:In this paper, we present a novel extension of massive gravity theory; the Brane-Chern-Simons massive gravity theory. We explore the cosmological implications of this theory by deriving the background equations and demonstrating the existence of self-accelerating solutions. Interestingly, our theory suggests the existence of self-accelerating mechanisms that originate from an effective cosmological constant, leading to intriguing possibilities for understanding the nature of cosmic acceleration. Furthermore, we perform a tensor perturbation analysis to investigate the propagation of gravitational waves in this framework. We derive the dispersion relation for gravitational waves and study their behavior in the Friedmann-Lemaître-Roberson-Waker cosmology within the context of Brane-Chen-Simons massive gravity. Utilizing the latest Union2 type Ia supernova dataset comprising $557$ SNIa events, we provide observational support for our theoretical framework, indicating that the Brane-Chern-Simons massive gravity theory is consistent with cosmological observations.

Abstract:We report strong cosmological constraints on the Brans-Dicke (BD) theory of gravity using Cosmic Microwave Background data from <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://Planck.We" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> consider two types of models. First, the initial condition of the scalar field is fixed to give the same effective gravitational strength $G_{eff}$ today as the one measured on the Earth, $G_N$. In this case the BD parameter $\omega$ is constrained to $\omega > 692$ at the $99\%$ confidence level, an order of magnitude improvement over previous <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://constraints.In" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> the second type the initial condition for the scalar is a free parameter leading to a somewhat stronger constraint of $\omega > 890$ while $G_{eff}$ is constrained to $0.981 <\frac{G_{eff}}{G_N} <1.285$ at the same confidence level. We argue that these constraints have greater validity than for the BD theory and are valid for any Horndeski theory, the most general second-order scalar-tensor theory, which approximates BD on cosmological scales. In this sense, our constraints place strong limits on possible modifications of gravity that might explain cosmic acceleration.

Abstract:The cosmological constant problem represents an evident tension between our present description of gravity and particle physics. Many solutions have been proposed, but experimental tests are always difficult or impossible to perform and the present phenomenological investigations focus only on possible relations with the dark energy, that is with the accelerating expansion rate of the contemporary universe. Here I suggest that strange stars, if they exist, could represent an interesting laboratory to investigate this puzzle, since their equilibrium configuration is partially determined by the QCD vacuum energy density.
The cosmological constant and the weak gravity conjecture

Abstract:We examine the descent via membrane nucleation through a landscape of vacua where the cosmological constant is given by a combination of four-form fluxes. It has been shown that this descent can be slowed exponentially for very low curvature vacua close to Minkowski space in a wide class of models satisfying certain parametric conditions, providing a possible solution to the cosmological constant problem. We explore in detail whether or not those parametric conditions are compatible with the membrane weak gravity conjecture. Whilst it is true that there is often tension, we show that this is not always the case and present an explicit model where Minkowski space is absolutely stable and the weak gravity conjecture is satisfied. This corresponds to an extension of the Bousso-Polchinski model into a generalised DBI action for four-forms. We also clarify how the landscape should be populated in a consistent model.

Cosmological Dark Matter from a Bulk Black Hole

Abstract:We study the cosmology of a three-brane in a specific five-dimensional scalar-gravity (i.e. soft-wall) background, known as the linear dilaton background. We discover that the Friedmann equation of the brane-world automatically contains a term mimicking pressureless matter. We propose to identify this term as dark matter. This dark matter arises as a projection of the bulk black hole on the brane, which contributes to the brane Friedmann equation via both the Weyl tensor and the scalar stress tensor. The nontrivial matter-like behavior is due to an exact cancellation between the Weyl and scalar pressures. We show that the Newtonian potential only receives a mild short-distance correction going as inverse distance squared, ensuring compatibility of the linear dilaton brane-world with observed 4D gravity. Our setup can be viewed as a consistent cosmological description of the holographic theories arising in the linear dilaton background. We also present more general scalar-gravity models where the brane cosmology features an effective energy density whose behavior smoothly interpolates between dark radiation, dark matter and dark energy depending on a model parameter.

Abstract:We consider a simple modification of the amplitude defining the dynamics of loop quantum gravity, corresponding to the introduction of the cosmological constant, and possibly related to the SL(2,C)q extension of the theory recently considered by Fairbairn-Meusburger and Han. We show that in the context of spinfoam cosmology, this modification yields the de Sitter cosmological solution.
