Abstract:We study D4 brane domain walls in the scale-separated 4d $\mathcal{N}$=1 AdS$_4$ DGKT scenario. Classically, these are BPS and satisfy a no-force condition since their tension equals their charge. We show that this property is not stable against quantum corrections and that these increase the brane tension-to-charge ratio, rendering the branes self-attractive. As a result, DGKT seems to be in tension with the Weak Gravity Conjecture for membranes. The quantum effects we consider include non-perturbative gaugino condensation on the D4-brane worldvolume and Euclidean D2 brane instantons, which correct the tension-to-charge ratio because the DGKT construction breaks all parity symmetries. Similar results hold in other 4d $\mathcal{N}$=1 setups not protected by parity symmetries.

Quantum Correction and the Moduli Spaces of Calabi-Yau Manifolds

Abstract: We define the quantum correction of the Teichm\"uller space $\mathcal{T}$ of Calabi-Yau manifolds. Under the assumption of no weak quantum correction, we prove that the Teichm\"uller space $\mathcal{T}$ is a locally symmetric space with the Weil-Petersson metric. For Calabi-Yau threefolds, we show that no strong quantum correction is equivalent to that, with the Hodge metric, the image $ \Phi(\mathcal{T})$ of the Teichm\"uller space $\mathcal{T}$ under the period map $\Phi$ is an open submanifold of a globally Hermitian symmetric space $W$ of the same dimension as $\mathcal{T}$. Finally, for Hyperk\"ahler manifold of dimension $2n \geq 4$, we find both locally and globally defined families of $(2,0)$ and $(2n,0)$-classes over the Teichm\"uller space of polarized Hyperk\"ahler manifolds.

Abstract:We make a comprehensive study on the string winding corrections to supergravity solutions in double field theory (DFT). We find five-brane and wave solutions of diverse codimensions in which the winding coordinates are naturally included. We discuss a physical interpretation of the winding coordinate dependence. The analysis based on the geometric structures behind the solutions leads to an interpretation of the winding dependence as string worldsheet instanton corrections. We also give a brief discussion on the origins of these winding corrections in gauged linear sigma model. Our analysis reveals that for every supergravity solution, one has DFT solutions that include string winding corrections.

Abstract:Quantum theory of 2d gravity is examined by including a special quantum correction, which corresponds to the open string loop corrections and provides a new conformal anomaly for the corresponding $\sigma$ model. This anomaly leads to the condensation of the tachyon, and the resultant effective theory implies a possibility of extending the 2d gravity to the case of $c>1$.

Abstract:We consider the flat supersymmetric D2 and anti-D2 system, which follows from ordinary noncommutative D2 anti-D2 branes by turning on an appropriate worldvolume electric field describing dissolved fundamental strings. We study the strings stretched between D2 and anti-D2 branes and show explicitly that the would-be tachyonic states become massless. We compute the string spectrum and clarify the induced noncommutativity on the worldvolume. The results are compared with the matrix theory description of the worldvolume gauge theories.

Abstract:We study D-branes in Kazama-Suzuki models by means of the boundary state description. We can identify the boundary states of Kazama-Suzuki models with the solitons in = 2 Landau-Ginzburg theories. We also propose a geometrical interpretation of the boundary states in Kazama-Suzuki models.

Double Holography of Entangled Universes

Abstract:We employ double holography to examine a system of two entangled gravitating universes that live on two codimension-one branes in an asymptotically AdS$_3$ spacetime with two disjoint conformal boundaries. There are distinct brane configurations depending on the temperature of the thermofield double (TFD) state between the left and right systems. The topology transition between two branes is naturally identified with the emergence of an Einstein-Rosen bridge connecting the two entangled universes. This doubly holographic construction offers a holographic perspective on gravitational collapse and black hole formation in brane universes. Through this holographic framework, we analyze the quantum information structure of the two gravitating universes. Specifically, we calculate the mutual information between defects present in the boundary theories on the left and right sides. Furthermore, we investigate the decoupling process in the Hayden-Preskill protocol applied to the two copies of the defect field theory and discuss the interpretation of the Yoshida-Kitaev decoding protocol.

Abstract:We study the vacuum moduli spaces of 3d N=2 supersymmetric quantum field theories by applying the formalism developed in our previous paper <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1404.5527" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1404.5527">arXiv:1404.5527</a>. The 3d theories can be realized by branes in type IIB string theory, which in a decoupling limit reduce to 4d N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory on an interval with BPS defects inserted. The moduli space of a given 3d theory is obtained by solving a generalization of Nahm's equations with appropriate boundary/junction conditions, along with help from the S-duality of type IIB string theory. Our classical computations reproduce many known results about the quantum-corrected moduli spaces of 3d theories, e.g. U(N_c) theories with N_f flavors with mass and FI parameters turned on. In particular, our methods give first-principles derivations of several results in the literature, including the s-rule, quantum splitting of classical Coulomb branches, the lifting of the Coulomb branch by non-Abelian instantons, quantum merging of Coulomb and Higgs branches, and phase transitions from re-ordering 5-branes.

Abstract:We study fluctuations of time-dependent fuzzy two-sphere solutions of the non-abelian DBI action of D0-branes, describing a bound state of a spherical D2-brane with N D0-branes. The quadratic action for small fluctuations is shown to be identical to that obtained from the dual abelian D2-brane DBI action, using the non-commutative geometry of the fuzzy two-sphere. For some of the fields, the linearized equations take the form of solvable Lamé equations. We define a large-N DBI-scaling limit, with vanishing string coupling and string length, and where the gauge theory coupling remains finite. In this limit, the non-linearities of the DBI action survive in both the classical and the quantum context, while massive open string modes and closed strings decouple. We describe a critical radius where strong gauge coupling effects become important. The size of the bound quantum ground state of multiple D0-branes makes an intriguing appearance as the radius of the fuzzy sphere, where the maximal angular momentum quanta become strongly coupled.

Abstract:We formulate the Nambu-Goldstone theorem as a triangular relation between pairs of Goldstone bosons with the degenerate vacuum. The vacuum degeneracy is then a natural consequence of this relation. Inside the scenario of String Theory, we then find that there is a correspondence between the way how the $D$-branes interact and the properties of the Goldstone bosons.

Abstract:This dissertation presents a study of dualities and generalized global symmetries in quantum field theories (QFTs) from the string theory perspective. Chapter 2 is based on the work <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2110.03696" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2110.03696">arXiv:2110.03696</a> with Sebastián Franco, Alessandro Minino and Ángel M. Uranga . It introduces a new class of string theory backgrounds, Spin(7) orientifolds, allowing for the engineering of 2$d$ $\mathcal{N}=(0,1)$ gauge theories on D1-branes and illustrating the perspective on 2$d$ $\mathcal{N}=(0,1)$ theories as real slices of 2$d$ $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ ones. Chapter 3 is based on the work <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2112.03929" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2112.03929">arXiv:2112.03929</a> with Sebastián Franco, Alessandro Minino and Ángel M. Uranga. It presents a new, geometric perspective on the triality of 2$d$ $\mathcal{N}=(0,1)$ gauge theories, based on their brane engineering introduced in Chapter 2. It also shows that general Spin(7) orientifolds extend triality to theories consisting of coupled 2$d$ $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ and $\mathcal{N}=(0,1)$ sectors, leading to extensions of triality that interpolate between pure 2$d$ $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ and $\mathcal{N}=(0,1)$ cases. Chapter 4 is based on the work <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2212.09743" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2212.09743">arXiv:2212.09743</a> with Jonathan J. Heckman, Max Hubner, Ethan Torres and Hao Y. Zhang. It presents a top-down construction of non-invertible duality symmetries in 4$d$ QFTs. The realization of QFTs is through D3-branes probing a Calabi-Yau threefold with an isolated singularity. The non-invertible duality defect then arises from configurations of 7-branes "at infinity". The study shows that different field-theoretic realizations of duality defects simply amount to distinct choices of where to place 7-brane branch cuts in the 5D bulk.

Anomalies and D-branes in the Dabholkar-Park background

Abstract:We consider D-branes in the Dabholkar-Park (DP) background, a $9$d orientifold theory obtained by gauging symmetry in the type~IIB string theory compactified on a circle. Using anomalies in the world-sheet theory, we provide physical insights into the classification of stable D-branes by relative KR-theory. The nature, such as stability, of D-branes wrapping along the compactified circle can be extracted from information about $1$d Majorana fermions on the boundary of the world-sheet. These Majorana fermions need to be introduced to consistently perform the GSO projection and the orientifold. We also construct D-brane states in the DP background. The spectrum of D-branes characterized by the relative KR-theory is correctly reproduced from the D-brane states.

Reciprocal Non-Relativistic Decoupling Limits of String Theory and M-Theory

Abstract:It has recently been realised that there are supersymmetry-preserving non-relativistic decoupling limits associated with each half-BPS object in String Theory and M-Theory. We argue that, given a $p$-brane and a $q$-brane for which there is a quarter-BPS intersecting configuration, the $p$-brane decoupling limit of the $q$-brane's worldvolume QFT is necessarily equal to the reciprocal $q$-brane decoupling limit of the $p$-brane's worldvolume theory. This is explicitly shown for the cases of the D0-D4 and D1-D3 systems. As an application of this idea, we use the reciprocal pair of limits in the M2-M5 system to describe the dynamics of interacting self-dual strings in the six-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ theory. We also discuss the limits of the dual gravitational theories and, using symmetries, argue that the duality is maintained by the limits.

The non-perturbative stringy interaction between NS-brane \& Dp brane

Abstract:To our best knowledge, the leading non-perturbative stringy interaction between an NS brane and a Dp brane remains unknown. We here present the non-perturbative stringy amplitudes for a system of an F-string and a Dp brane and a system of an NS 5 brane and a Dp brane for $0 \le p \le 6$. In either case, the F or NS5 and the Dp are placed parallel at a separation. We obtain the respective amplitudes, starting from the amplitude for a system of a D1 and a D3 for the former and that for a system of a D5 and a D3 system for the latter, based on the IIB S-duality and various T-dualities plus the consistency of both, along with the respective known long-range amplitudes. We would like to point out that the amplitude for the D1/D3 or D3/D5 computed from the usual D-brane technique does not take into consideration of the non-perturbative contribution due to the exchange of virtual closed D-string emitted by the D3. As such the resulting amplitudes obtained from this one via the S-duality and followed by various T-dualities are not consistent with the IIB S-duality. We resolve this issue and obtain the corresponding consistent amplitudes. The implications of so obtained amplitudes are also discussed.
