Abstract:We introduce new techniques based on brane tilings to investigate D3-branes probing orientifolds of toric Calabi-Yau singularities. With these new tools, one can write down many orientifold models and derive the resulting low-energy gauge theories living on the D-branes. Using the set of ideas in this paper one recovers essentially all orientifolded theories known so far. Furthermore, new orientifolds of non-orbifold toric singularities are obtained. The possible applications of the tools presented in this paper are diverse. One particular application is the construction of models which feature dynamical supersymmetry breaking as well as the computation of D-instanton induced superpotential terms.

Mirror of Orbifold Singularities in the Hitchin Fibration: the case $(\text{SL}_n,\text{PGL}_n)$

Abstract:We study the geometry of singular $\text{SL}_n$-Hitchin fibres over the elliptic locus. We show that orbifold singularities appear in the $\text{PGL}_n$-moduli space $M^{ell}(\text{PGL}_n)$ exactly when the $\text{SL}_n$ side $M^{ell}(\text{SL}_n)$ has a reducible Hitchin fibre. Our main theorem shows that the Fourier-Mukai transform of a skyscraper sheaf supported at an orbifold singularity in $M^{ell}(\text{PGL}_n)$ satisfies a version of the fractional Hecke eigenproperty, as conjectured by Frenkel and Witten.

Abstract:Fibrewise T-duality (Fourier-Mukai transform) for D-branes on an elliptic Calabi-Yau three-fold $X$ is seen to have an expected adiabatic form for its induced cohomology operation only when an appropriately twisted operation resp. twisted charge is defined. Some differences with the case of $K3$ as well as connections with the spectral cover construction for bundles on $X$ are pointed out. In the context of mirror symmetry Kontsevich's association of line bundle twists (resp. a certain 'diagonal' operation) with monodromies (esp. the conifold monodromy) is made explicit and checked for two example models. Interpreting this association as a relation between FM transforms and monodromies, we express the fibrewise FM transform through known monodromies. The operation of fibrewise duality as well as the notion of a certain index relevant to the computation of the moduli space of the bundle is transported to the sLag side. Finally the moduli space for D4-branes and its behaviour under the FM transform is considered with an application to the spectral cover.

Abstract:We discuss issues related to orientifolds and the brane realization for gauge theories with orthogonal and symplectic groups. We specifically discuss the case of theories with (hidden) global SO(2n) symmetry, from three to six dimensions. We analyze mirror symmetry for three dimensional N=4 gauge theories, Brane Box Models and six-dimensional gauge theories. We also discuss the issue of T-duality for D_n space-time singularities. Stuck D branes on ON^0 planes play an interesting role.

Abstract:We investigate Z2 x Z2 orientifolds with group actions involving shifts. A complete classification of possible geometries is presented where also previous work by other authors is included in a unified framework from an intersecting D-brane perspective. In particular, we show that the additional shifts not only determine the topology of the orbifold but also independently the presence of orientifold planes. In the second part, we work out in detail a basis of homological three cycles on shift Z2 x Z2 orientifolds and construct all possible fractional D-branes including rigid ones. A Pati-Salam type model with no open-string moduli in the visible sector is presented.
Brane involutions on irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds

Abstract:In the context of irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds, we say that (anti)holomorphic (anti)symplectic involutions are brane involutions since their fixed point locus is a brane in the physicists' language, i.e. a submanifold which is either complex or lagrangian submanifold with respect to each of the three Kähler structures of the associated hyperkähler structure. Starting from a brane involution on a K3 or abelian surface, one can construct a natural brane involution on its moduli space of sheaves. We study these natural involutions and their relation with the Fourier--Mukai transform. Later, we recall the lattice-theoretical approach to Mirror Symmetry. We provide two ways of obtaining a brane involution on the mirror and we study the behaviour of the brane involutions under both mirror transformations, giving examples in the case of a K3 surface and $K3^{[2]}$-type manifolds.

Abstract:Continuing the study in hep-th/0004092 and hep-th/0004092, we investigate a non-trivial string dynamical process related to orientifold planes, i.e., the splitting of physical NS-branes and D(p+2)-branes on orientifold Op-planes. Creation or annihilation of physical Dp-branes usually accompanies the splitting process. In the particular case p=4, we use Seiberg-Witten curves as an independent method to check the results.
Modelling $A$-branes with foliations

Abstract:A certain class of $A$-branes in mirrors of toric Calabi-Yau threefolds can be described through the framework of foliations. This allows to develop an explicit description of their moduli spaces based on a cell decomposition, with strata of various dimensions glued together in a way that is dictated by partial degenerations of the underlying special Lagrangian. Examples of $A$-branes associated with `wild' BPS states are considered in detail. The torus fixed points in their moduli spaces provide a decomposition of $m$-herds spectral networks into a number $|\Omega|$ of basic connected objects, where $\Omega$ is the the corresponding rank-zero Donaldson-Thomas (DT) invariant. A relation between the surgery parameters of the special Lagrangian and the baryonic semi-invariants of the representation theory of $m$-Kronecker quivers is also discussed, providing a local map between moduli spaces of branes related by homological mirror symmetry.

Abstract:We use field theory and brane diamond techniques to demonstrate that Toric Duality is Seiberg duality for N = 1 theories with toric moduli spaces. This resolves the puzzle concerning the physical meaning of Toric Duality as proposed in our earlier work. Furthermore, using this strong connection we arrive at three new phases which can not be thus far obtained by the so-called "Inverse Algorithm" applied to partial resolution of C-3/(Z(3) x Z(3)). The standing proposals of Seiberg duality as diamond duality in the work by Aganagic-Karch-Lust-Miemiec are strongly supported and new diamond configurations for these singularities are obtained as a byproduct. We also make some remarks about the relationships between Seiberg duality and Picard-Lefschetz monodromy.
Orientifold Dual for Stuck Ns5 Branes

Abstract:We establish T-duality between NS5 branes stuck on an orientifold 8-plane in type I' and an orientifold construction in type IIB with D7 branes intersecting at angles. Two applications are discussed. For one we obtain new brane constructions, realizing field theories with gauge group a product of symplectic factors, giving rise to a large new class of conformal N = 1 theories embedded in string theory. Second, by studying a D2 brane probe in the type I' background, we get some information on the still elusive (0,4) linear sigma model describing a perturbative heterotic string on an ADE singularity.

Abstract:We adapt algorithms for resolving the singularities of complex algebraic varieties to prove that the natural map of homology theories from complex bordism to the bordism theory of complex derived orbifolds splits. In equivariant stable homotopy theory, our techniques yield a splitting of homology theories for the map from bordism to the equivariant bordism theory of a finite group $\Gamma$, given by assigning to a manifold its product with $\Gamma$. In symplectic topology, and using recent work of Abouzaid-McLean-Smith and Hirshi-Swaminathan, we conclude that one can define complex cobordism-valued Gromov-Witten invariant for arbirary (closed) symplectic manifolds. We apply our results to constrain the topology of the space of Hamiltonian fibrations over $S^2$. The methods we develop apply to normally complex orbifolds, and will hence lead to applications in symplectic topology that rely on moduli spaces of holomorphic curves with Lagrangian boundary conditions.

Abstract:We calculate the Seiberg-Witten invariants of branched covers of prime degree, where the branch locus consists of embedded spheres. Aside from the formula itself, our calculations give rise to some new constraints on configurations of embedded spheres in 4-manifolds. Using similar methods, we also obtain new constraints on embeddings of real projective planes and spheres with a cusp singularity. Moreover, we show that the existence of certain configurations of surfaces would give rise to 4-manifolds of non-simple type. Our proof makes use of equivariant Seiberg-Witten invariants as well as a gluing formula for the relative Seiberg-Witten invariants of 4-manifolds with positive scalar curvature boundary.
