Abstract:We generalize our theorems in "Mirror Principle I" to a class of balloon manifolds. Many of the results are proved for convex projective manifolds. In a subsequent paper, Mirror Principle III, we will extend the results to projective manifolds without the convexity assumption.

One of them gives an intriguing connection to a problem of counting holomorphic disks and annuli. This note has been submitted for the proceedings of the Workshop on Strings, Duality and Geometry the C.R.M. in Montreal of March 2000.

Abstract:We describe the S 1 -action on the Quot-scheme Quot(E n ) associated to the trivial bundle E n = CP 1 × C n . In particlular, the topology of the S 1 -fixed-point components in Quot(E n ) and the S 1 -weights of the normal bundle of these components are worked out. Mirror Principle, as developed by three of the current authors in the series of work [L-L-Y1, I, II, III, IV], is a method for studying certain intersection numbers on a stable map moduli space. As an application, in Mirror Principle III, Sec 5.4, an outline was given in the case of genus zero with target a flag manifold. The results on S 1 fixed points in this paper are used here to do explicit Mirror Principle computations in the case of Grassmannian manifolds. In fact, Mirror Principle computations involve only a certain distinguished subcollection of the S 1 -fixed-point components. These components are identified and are labelled by Young tableaus. The S 1 -equivariant Euler class eS1 of the normal bundle to these components is computed. A diagrammatic rule that allows one to write down eS1 directly from the Young tableau is given. From this, the aforementioned intersection numbers on the moduli space of stable maps can be worked out. Two examples are given to illustrate our method. Using our method, the A-model for Calabi-Yau complete intersections in a Grassmannian manifold can now also be computed explicitly. This work is motivated by the intention to provide further details of mirror principle and to understand the relation of mirror principle to physical theory. Some related questions are listed for further study.

Radio Continuum Morphology of Southern Seyfert Galaxies

Abstract:We present radio observations for 29 southern Seyfert galaxies selected from a volume limited sample with cz<3600 km s^-1, and declination delta<0degr. Objects with declination -30degr<delta<0degr were observed with the Very Large Array (VLA) at 6 cm (4.9 GHz) and objects with delta<-30degr were observed with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) at 3.5 cm (8.6 GHz). Both the VLA and the ATCA observations have a resolution of ~1arcsec. These new observations cover more than 50% of the southern sample with all but two of the 29 objects detected above our limit of 0.15 mJy. Combining these data with data available from the literature gives almost 85% coverage of the southern sample and further expands the radio observations of a distance limited sample by 22%. Collecting additional sources from the literature, consisting of known Seyferts with cz < 4600 km s^-1, we find that 38% of the sources are unresolved at arcsecond resolution, and 34% have linear radio structure. Our results expand upon and are consistent with earlier studies. We confirm a correlation between the size of the radio structure and the radio luminosity. A comparison between Seyfert types 1 and 2 finds that type 2s tend to have a larger linear size. There is no statistically significant difference in radio power between types 1 and 2, although all the most powerful objects appear to be Seyfert 2's. No significant difference has been found in the spectral indices.

Mirror Symmetry and Localizations

Abstract:We describe the applications of localization methods, in particular the functorial localization formula, in the proofs of several conjectures from string theory. The functorial localization formula pushes the computations on complicated moduli spaces to simple moduli spaces. It is a key technique in the proof of the general mirror formula, the proof of the Hori-Vafa formula for explicit expressions of basic hypergeornetric series of homogeneous manifolds, and the proof of the Marino-Vafa formula for Hodge integrals. The proposal of Strominger-Yau-Zaslow of mirror symmetry will also be discussed.

(1) General vanishing and rigidity theorems of elliptic genera proved by using modular forms, Kac-Moody algebras and vertex operator algebras. (2) The computations of intersection numbers of the moduli spaces of flat connections on a Riemann surface by using heat kernels. (3) The mirror principle about counting curves in Calabi-Yau and general projective manifolds by using hypergeometric series.

Abstract: Motivated by the recent work of Kachru-Vafa in string theory, we study in Part A of this paper, certain identities involving modular forms, hypergeometric series, and more generally series solutions to Fuchsian equations. The identity which arises in string theory is the simpliest of its kind. There are nontrivial generalizations of the identity which appear new. We give many such examples -- all of which arise in mirror symmetry for algebraic K3 surfaces. In Part B, we study the integrality property of certain $q$-series, known as mirror maps, which arise in mirror symmetry.

Mirror Symmetry for Special Nilpotent Orbit Closures

Abstract:Motivated by geometric Langlands, we initiate a program to study the mirror symmetry between nilpotent orbit closures of a semisimple Lie algebra and those of its Langlands dual. The most interesting case is $B_n$ via $C_n$. Classically, there is a famous Springer duality between special orbits. Therefore, it is natural to speculate that the mirror symmetry we seek may coincide with Springer duality in the context of special orbits. Unfortunately, such a naive statement fails. To remedy the situation, we propose a conjecture which asserts the mirror symmetry for certain parabolic/induced covers of special orbits. Then, we prove the conjecture for Richardson orbits and obtain certain partial results in general. In the process, we reveal some very interesting and yet subtle structures of these finite covers, which are related to Lusztig's canonical quotients of special nilpotent orbits. For example, there is a mysterious asymmetry in the footprint or range of degrees of these finite covers. Finally, we provide two examples to show that the mirror symmetry fails outside the footprint.
Mirror of Orbifold Singularities in the Hitchin Fibration: the case $(\text{SL}_n,\text{PGL}_n)$

Abstract:We study the geometry of singular $\text{SL}_n$-Hitchin fibres over the elliptic locus. We show that orbifold singularities appear in the $\text{PGL}_n$-moduli space $M^{ell}(\text{PGL}_n)$ exactly when the $\text{SL}_n$ side $M^{ell}(\text{SL}_n)$ has a reducible Hitchin fibre. Our main theorem shows that the Fourier-Mukai transform of a skyscraper sheaf supported at an orbifold singularity in $M^{ell}(\text{PGL}_n)$ satisfies a version of the fractional Hecke eigenproperty, as conjectured by Frenkel and Witten.

Abstract:We study some arithmetic properties of the mirror maps and the quantum Yukawa couplings for some 1-parameter deformations of Calabi-Yau manifolds. First we use the Schwarzian differential equation, which we derived previously, to characterize the mirror map in each case. For algebraic K3 surfaces, we solve the equation in terms of theJ-function. By deriving explicit modular relations we prove that some K3 mirror maps are algebraic over the genus zero function fieldQ(J). This leads to a uniform proof that those mirror maps have integral Fourier coefficients. Regarding the maps as Riemann mappings, we prove that they are genus zero functions. By virtue of the Conway-Norton conjecture (proved by Borcherds using Frenkel-Lepowsky-Meurman's Moonshine module), we find that these maps are actually the reciprocals of the Thompson series for certain conjugacy classes in the Griess-Fischer group. This also gives, as an immediate consequence, a second proof that those mirror maps are integral. We thus conjecture a surprising connection between K3 mirror maps and the Thompson series. For threefolds, we construct a formal nonlinear ODE for the quantum coupling reduced modp. Under the mirror hypothesis and an integrality assumption, we derive modp congurences for the Fourier coefficients. For the quintics, we deduce, (at least for 5×d) that the degreed instanton numbersnd are divisible by 53 — a fact first conjectured by Clemens.

On the positivity and integrality of coefficients of mirror maps

Abstract:We present natural conjectural generalizations of the `positivity and integrality of mirror maps' phenomenon, encompassing the mirror maps appearing in the Batyrev--Borisov construction of mirror Calabi--Yau complete intersections in Fano toric varieties as a special case. We find that, given the combinatorial data from which one constructs a mirror pair of Calabi--Yau complete intersections, there are two ways of writing down an associated `mirror map': one which is the `true mirror map', meaning the one which appears in mirror symmetry theorems; and one which is the `naive mirror map'. The two are equal under a certain combinatorial criterion which holds e.g. for the quintic threefold, but not in general. We conjecture (based on substantial computer checks, together with proofs under extra hypotheses) that the naive mirror map always has positive integer coefficients, while the true mirror map always has integer (but not necessarily positive) coefficients. Almost all previous works on the integrality of mirror maps concern the naive mirror map, and in particular, only apply to the true mirror map under the combinatorial criterion mentioned above.

Abstract:The Remodeling Conjecture proposed by Bouchard-Klemm-Marifio-Pasquetti (BKMP) relates the A-model open and closed topological string amplitudes (open and closed Gromov-Witten in-variants) of a symplectic toric Calabi-Yau 3-fold to Eynard-Orantin invariants of its mirror curve. The Remodeling Conjecture can be viewed as a version of all genus open-closed mirror symmetry. The SYZ conjecture explains mirror symmetry as T-duality. After a brief review on SYZ mirror symmetry and mirrors of symplectic toric Calabi-Yau 3-orbifolds, we give a non-technical exposition of our results on the Remodeling Conjecture for symplectic toric Calabi-Yau 3-orbifolds. In the end, we apply SYZ mirror symmetry to obtain the descendent version of the all genus mirror symmetry for toric Calabi-Yau 3-orbifolds.

Abstract:The presented paper is a continuation of the series of papers [17, 18]. In this paper, utilizing Batyrev and Borisov's duality construction on nef-partitions, we generalize the recipe in [17,18] to construct a pair of singular double cover Calabi-Yau varieties ( Y, Y (nu) ) over toric manifolds and compute their topological Euler characteristics and Hodge numbers. In the 3 -dimensional cases, we show that ( Y, Y (nu) ) forms a topological mirror pair, i.e., h (p , q) ( Y ) = h (3 - p,q) ( Y (nu) ) for all p, q .

Abstract:Wan conjectures that if $X$ and $Y$ form a strong mirror pair of Calabi-Yau varieties over a finite field $F_q$ with $q$ elements, then X and Y have the same number of $F_{q^k}$-rational points modulo $q^k$. We prove this conjecture under the condition that $Y$ can be obtained from $X$ through quotient construction.

Abstract:The Breuil-Mézard Conjecture predicts the existence of hypothetical "Breuil-Mezard cycles" in the moduli space of mod $p$ Galois representations of $\mathrm{Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}_q/\mathbb{Q}_q)$ that should govern congruences between mod $p$ automorphic forms. For generic parameters, we propose a construction of Breuil-Mézard cycles in arbitrary rank, and verify that they satisfy the Breuil-Mézard Conjecture for all sufficiently generic tame types and small Hodge-Tate weights. Our method is purely local and group-theoretic, and completely distinct from previous approaches to the Breuil-Mézard Conjecture. In particular, we leverage new connections between the Breuil-Mézard Conjecture and phenomena occurring in homological mirror symmetry and geometric representation theory.
