Abstract:A new method, in which the wavefronts of the zero-order and the positive and negative first-order diffracted beams from a planar scale grating in Littrow setup are analyzed by a Fizeau interferometer, is proposed to evaluate the Z-directional out-of-flatness as well as the X-and Y-directional pitch deviations of the planar scale grating over a large area. Meanwhile, the surface profile of the reference optical flat in the Fizeau interferometer can also be determined in a much simpler and more efficient approach than the commonly used liquid-flat reference and three-flat test calibration methods. Abstract:A single method for simultaneously measuring 2-D rotational angles is proposed by using a collimation laser. Compared with the traditional autocollimator measurement method, the proposed method can also be applied to longer distance and higher precision angular measurement. The 2-D angular drift of the reference datum beam is suppressed by a factor of 10 via expansion. A traditional single lens in front of the detector is replaced by combination lenses to increase the sensitivity and compactibility. The measurement principle of the 2-D angles is also analyzed. The feasibility and stability of the presented system are verified by comparison with the Renishaw ML10 laser interference measuring system. The experimental results show that the linear correlativity is 0.99999 and the point-to-point standard deviation error is less than +/- 0.2 arcsec in a +/- 60-arcsec range and 2000-mm distance. This proposal is most advantageous for simultaneous long distance and high accuracy of 2-D angular errors measurement of a linear guide manner. Abstract:A simple and novel method for measuring four-degree-of-freedom geometric errors of a linear stage was put forward. A single-mode fiber-coupled laser module was used. Only a cube corner retro-reflector and a beam splitter were adopted in the moving target in order to sense the straightness errors and angular errors, respectively. In this way, the horizontal and vertical straightness errors as well as yaw and pitch errors can be measured simultaneously. Theoretic error separation has been analyzed in detail and the straightness-compensated method was given. The system based on the above method was developed. In comparison with an API five-dimensional laser measurement system, the accuracy of the measuring straightness error is about ±2.5μm within the measuring range of ±500μm, and the angular errors are about ±3arcsec within the range of ±400arcsec. In addition, there is no cable connection in the moving target, which is a great convenience for the workshop measurements.

Abstract:A novel method for measuring four-degree-of-freedom geometric errors of a linear stage is put forward. A single-mode fiber-coupled laser module is used, and the laser beam from this laser module is highly stable, and can be used as the reference line for straightness error and angular error measurements. Only a corner retro-reflector and a beam splitter are adopted in the moving target in order to sense the straightness errors and angular errors. In this way, the horizontal and vertical straightness errors as well as yaw and pitch errors can be measured simultaneously. At the same time, there is no cable connection in the moving target, which gives a great convenience in the workshop measurements. The four-degree-of-freedom measuring system (FDMS) based on the above method has been developed, and the system has the resolution of less than 0.1 micrometer for straightness error measurement and 0.5 arc-sec for angular error measurement. The stability, repeatability experiments and the comparison experiments with API 5D laser measuring system were done. Experimental results and theoretical analyses showed that the measurement accuracies of straightness error and angular errors are about±1.0 μm/m and±0.5 ″respectively within the measurement range of 2 m.

Abstract:Abstract Flat-field reflects the non-uniformity of the photometric response at the focal plane of an instrument, which uses digital image sensors, such as Charge Coupled Device (CCD) and Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (CMOS). This non-uniformity must be corrected before being used for scientific research. In this paper, we assess various candidate methods via simulation using available data so as to figure the in-flight flat-field calibration methodology for the Lyman-alpha Solar Telescope (LST). LST is one of the payloads for the Advanced Space-based Solar Observatory (ASO-S) mission and consists of three instruments: a White-light Solar Telescope (WST), a Solar Disk Imager (SDI) and a dual-waveband Solar Corona Imager (SCI). In our simulations, data from the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) and Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) mission are used. Our results show that the normal KLL method is appropriate for in-flight flat-field calibration of WST and implementing a transmissive diffuser is applicable for SCI. For the in-flight flat-field calibration of SDI, we recommend the KLL method with off-pointing images with defocused resolution of around 18′′, and use the local correlation tracking (LCT) algorithm instead of limb-fitting to determine the relative displacements between different images.

118 Long Focal Length Testing for Large Aperture Lens

Abstract:A novel method for long focal length measurement is presented, which is accomplished by obtaining the angle of moire fringe formed by Talbot effect of Ronchi grating. When the Ronchi grating was illuminated by spherical wave (plane wave pass through a lens), the period of the Talbot image of the grating, which has a relationship with the radius of the spherical wave (focal length of the lens), will change. When put another Ronchi grating at the place of the Talbot image, moire fringe formed. Correspondingly, the angle of the moire has a relationship with the focal length. So the focal length can be measured by calculating the angle of the moire fringe. The formula of calculating the long focal length from the angle of moire fringe is derived. Error analysis demonstrates that this method can be applied to the real-time testing with high accuracy.

Abstract:Based on the Ronchi-Talbot effect and moire fringe technique, the focal length measurement method using divergent light and unequal-period grating is used for the measurement of the focal length of lens with a small aperture and long focal length. The long focal length of a piano-concave lens as a lens to be measured with a processing error in the curvature radius is measured. When the true curvature radius of the lens is unknown, first, the influence of the curvature radius error (of the lens to be measured) on the focal length detection accuracy is analyzed, and the position of the lens in the whole detection system is determined. Then, the focal length of the lens is measured, and multiple groups of measured focal length values arc calculated separately. By comparison, it can be found that when the curvature radius remains unknown, the repeatability and stability of the focal length measurement arc consistent. The measured focal lengths arc in the range of 33200-33270 mm. The repeatability precision is greater than 0.055%, and measurement accuracy is better than one-fifth of the focal depth. These results prove that the proposed method is reliable and efficient in the focal length measurement of small-aperture lenses with long focal length.

Abstract:Preflight ground flat-field calibration is significant to the development phase of space astronomical telescopes. The uniformity of the flat-field illumination reference source seriously decreases with the increasing aperture and the telescope's field of view, directly affecting the final calibration accuracy. To overcome this problem, a flat-field calibration method that can complete calibration without a traditional flat-field illumination reference source is proposed on the basis of the spatial time-sharing calibration principle. First, the characteristics of the flat field in the spatial domain taken by the space astronomical telescope are analyzed, and the flat field is divided into large-scale flat (L-flat) and pixel-to-pixel flat (P-flat). They are then obtained via different calibration experiments and finally combined with the data fusion process. L-flat is obtained through star field observations and the corresponding L-flat extraction algorithm, which can obtain the best estimation of L-flat based on numerous photometry samples, thereby effectively improving calibration accuracy. The simulation model of flat-field calibration used for accuracy analysis is established. In particular, the error sources or experimental parameters that affect the accuracy of L-flat calibration are discussed in detail. Results of the accuracy analysis show that the combined uncertainty of the proposed calibration method can reach 0.78%. Meanwhile, experiments on an optic system with a Φ142mm aperture are performed to verify the calibration method. Results demonstrate that the RMS values of the residual map are 0.720%, 0.565%, and 0.558% at the large-, middle-, and small-scale, respectively. The combined calibration uncertainty is 0.88%, which is generally consistent with the results of the accuracy analysis.

Abstract:With telescope apertures becoming larger and larger, the deployment of large-field telescopes is becoming increasingly popular. However, optical path calibration is necessary to ensure the image quality of large-field and large-diameter telescopes. In particular, focal plane attitude calibration is an essential optical path calibration technique that has a direct impact on image quality. In this paper, a focal plane attitude detection method using eight acquisition cameras is proposed based on the calibration requirements of the wide-field telescope, LAMOST. Comparison of simulation and experimental results shows that the detection accuracy of the proposed method can reach 30 arcsec. With additional testing and verification, this method could be used to facilitate regular focal plane attitude calibration for LAMOST as well as other large-field telescopes.

A novel simple and accurate flatness measurement method

Abstract:Flatness measurement of a surface plate is an intensive and old research topic. However ISO definition related and other measurement methods seem uneasy in measuring and/ or complicated in data analysis. Especially in reality, the mentioned methods don't take a clear and straightforward care on the inclining angle which is always included in any given flatness measurement. In this report a novel simple and accurate flatness measurement method was introduced to overcome this prevailing feature in the available methods. The mathematical modeling for this method was also presented making the underlying nature of the method transparent. The applying examples show consistent results.

Abstract:Star sensors are widely employed in spacecraft, yet their observation accuracy is seriously affected by the thermal deformation of the sensor bracket. A high-precision self-calibration method for measuring a star sensor bracket thermal deformation by the quasi-common-path polarized-light difference based on laser autocollimation was first proposed, and the measurement equipment was developed. Zemax and Comsol software were used to simulate the influence of window glass and glue layer on the measurements, respectively, then laboratory experiments and field tests were performed. The simulation and experimental results show that the proposed method can greatly reduce the influence of mechanical drift, vibration, and other factors on the measurements, and greatly improve the accuracy and stability of long-term measurements. A comprehensive measurement accuracy of better than was obtained in the vacuum test environment over C to C. Long-term vacuum thermal cycling of the star sensor bracket of "Aoke-1" satellite showed that the thermal stability of the yaw and pitch were /°C and /°C, respectively, which met the on-orbit operation stability requirements of /°C. This developed measurement method and equipment ensures the future observation accuracy of the "Aoke-1" satellite and provides a new method for high-precision measurement of the relatively small angle change between two surfaces in vacuum and high-low temperature environments.

A Stereovision-Based Efficient Measurement Approach for Surface Flatness of Concrete Members

Abstract:The surface flatness of concrete members is an important quality characteristic of buildings and civil infrastructure. Existing measurement methods such as the straightedge method, F-numbers method, and laser scanning method have various limitations such as inefficiency in engineering practices, low accuracy, and high costs. Therefore, this paper presents a novel stereovision-based system comprising two industrial cameras and one projector alongside optimized algorithms to efficiently measure the surface flatness of concrete member. The proposed system is highlighted by effective feature point extraction and matching algorithms, the innovative introduction of feature point extraction error to system measurement error evaluation, and enriched flatness indicators to comprehensively assess surface flatness of concrete members. The outputs of the system, namely, the contour maps as visual demonstrations and the flatness indicator results, can collectively reflect various roughness conditions with high speed and precision. Experiments at multiple levels have validated the proposed algorithms and measurement system, showing that it is capable for providing fast and accurate measures for the surface flatness of concrete members. Further research and developments are sought in system optimization and expanding its applications to other structural members and engineering practices.

Abstract:The transfer cavity is a very important frequency reference for laser stabilization and is widely used for applications such as precision measurements and laser cooling of ions or molecules. But the non-linear response of the piezoelectric ceramic transducer (PZT) in the Fabry-Perot cavity limits the performance of the laser stabilization. Thus, measuring and controlling such non-linearity is essential. Here we report an in situ, optical method to characterize this non-linearity by measuring the resonant signals of a dual-frequency laser. The differential measurement makes it insensitive to the laser and cavity drifts, while maintaining a very high sensitivity. It can be applied for various applications with PZTs, especially in an optical lab.

Abstract:Aside from LISA Pathfinder's top-level acceleration requirement, there is a stringent independent requirement for the accuracy of the optical metrology system. In case of a perfectly aligned metrology system (optical bench and test masses) it should rather be independent of residual displacement jitter due to control. However, this ideal case will not be achieved as mechanical tolerances and uncertainties lead to a direct impact of test mass and spacecraft displacement jitter on the optical measurement accuracy. In this paper, we present a strategy how to cover these effects for a systematic requirement breakdown. We use a simplified nonlinear geometrical model for the differential distance measurement of the test masses which is linearized and linked to the equations of motion for both the spacecraft and the two test masses. This leads from test mass relative displacement to a formulation in terms of applied force/torque and thus allows to distinguish the absolute motion of each of the three bodies. It further shows how motions in each degree of freedom couple linearly into the optical measurement via DC misalignments of the laser beam and the test masses. This finally allows for deriving requirements on the alignment accuracy of components and on permittable closed-loop acceleration noise. In the last part a budget for the expected measurement performance is compiled from simulations as no measurement data is available yet.

Abstract:Laser is becoming an increasingly important tool in 3-D precise measurement. To reduce the measurement error, the size of the laser spot should be as small as possible. Aiming at the problem mentioned above, a calibration and measurement method based on optical lenses is proposed. Limited to manufacturing and installing errors, the decentration, and tilt among the laser beam, planoconcave lens (PL) and liquid lens (LL) cannot be avoided exactly. The analysis of the optical path with the decentration and tilt is performed. Regarding the complicated calculation, MATLAB is utilized to obtain the motion law of the target spot. The calibration experiment shows that the root mean square error (RMSE) of points used for line fitting is no more than 0.116 mm at a range of 10 m. Moreover, the measurement experiment shows that the RMSE of point measurement and distance measurement of the system is 0.425 and 0.219 mm, respectively. We demonstrate that the calibration and measurement method with optical lenses is feasible for 3-D measurement.

Intrinsic pixel size variation in an LSST prototype sensor

Abstract:The ambitious science goals of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) have motivated a search for new and unexpected sources of systematic error in the LSST camera. Flat field images are a rich source of data on sensor anomalies, although such effects are typically dwarfed by shot noise in a single flat field. After combining many (0∼50) such images into ‘ultraflats’ to reduce the impact of shot noise, we perform photon transfer analysis on a pixel-by-pixel basis and observe no spatial structure in pixel linearity or gain at light levels of 100 ke− and below. At 125 ke−, a columnar structure is observed in the gain map—we attribute this to a flux-dependent charge-transfer inefficiency. We also probe small-scale variations in effective pixel size by analyzing pixel-neighbor correlations in ultraflat images, where we observe clear evidence of intrinsic variation in effective pixel size in an LSST prototype sensor near the ∼ .3% level.

Is Flat Fielding Safe for Precision CCD Astronomy?

Abstract:The ambitious goals of precision cosmology with wide-field optical surveys such as the Dark Energy Survey (DES) and the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) demand, as their foundation, precision CCD astronomy. This in turn requires an understanding of previously uncharacterized sources of systematic error in CCD sensors, many of which manifest themselves as static effective variations in pixel area. Such variation renders a critical assumption behind the traditional procedure of flat fielding--that a sensor's pixels comprise a uniform grid--invalid. In this work, we present a method to infer a curl-free model of a sensor's underlying pixel grid from flat field images, incorporating the superposition of all electrostatic sensor effects--both known and unknown--present in flat field data. We use these pixel grid models to estimate the overall impact of sensor systematics on photometry, astrometry, and PSF shape measurements in a representative sensor from the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) and a prototype LSST sensor. Applying the method to DECam data recovers known significant sensor effects for which corrections are currently being developed within DES. For an LSST prototype CCD with pixel-response non-uniformity (PRNU) of 0.4%, we find the impact of "improper" flat-fielding on these observables is negligible in nominal .7" seeing conditions. These errors scale linearly with the PRNU, so for future LSST production sensors, which may have larger PRNU, our method provides a way to assess whether pixel-level calibration beyond flat fielding will be required.

Method for testing freeform surfaces based on a Shack-Hartmann sensor with plane wavefront scanning and stitching

Abstract:Currently, the surface error measurement technology for freeform faces a significant contradiction between measurement accuracy and dynamic range. The study proposes a non-null testing method for measuring freeform surfaces by utilizing a Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor to emit a small aperture parallel beam and scan along the normal direction at the center of subapertures for stitching (SHPSS). A mathematical model based on ray tracing and the reflection theorem is established to calculate the sampling points on an ideal freeform surface, the reference spot array on CCD, and the corresponding relationship between microlens array and spots. An algorithm is proposed to iteratively calculate the wavefront aberration and gradually approach the actual sampling points using the established model. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulation results indicate that SHPSS can increase the dynamic range and improve the accuracy of wavefront reconstruction. The error analysis of the SHPSS method is carried out, the measurement accuracy of full aperture freeform surface is 11.45 nm. A testing system is set up and experiments are conducted on a 100 mm aperture freeform reflective mirror. The RMS of the SHPSS test results is less than λ/30 (λ=635 nm) compared to the interferometric test results. By analyzing five groups of repeated measurement experiments, the repeatability accuracy of SHPSS method is less than 1/80 λ (RMS). This demonstrates the feasibility and measurement capabilities of the method for freeform surface testing.
Flattening Scientific CCD Imaging Data with a Dome Flat Field System

Abstract:We describe the flattening of scientific CCD imaging data using a dome flat field system. The system uses light emitting diodes (LEDs) to illuminate a carefully constructed dome flat field screen. LEDs have several advantages over more traditional illumination sources: they are available in a wide range of output wavelengths, are inexpensive, have a very long source lifetime, and are straightforward to control digitally. The circular dome screen is made of a material with Lambertian scattering properties that efficiently reflects light of a wide range of wavelengths and incident angles. We compare flat fields obtained using this new system with two types of traditionally-constructed flat fields: twilight sky flats and nighttime sky flats. Using photometric standard stars as illumination sources, we test the quality of each flat field by applying it to a set of standard star observations. We find that the dome flat field system produces flat fields that are superior to twilight or nighttime sky flats, particularly for photometric calibration. We note that a ratio of the twilight sky flat to the nighttime sky flat is flat to within the expected uncertainty; but since both of these flat fields are inferior to the dome flat, this common test is not an appropriate metric for testing a flat field. Rather, the only feasible and correct method for determining the appropriateness of a flat field is to use standard stars to measure the reproducibility of known magnitudes across the detector.
