Abstract:We formulate three-dimensional equations for the finite temperature in-matter three-body problem. Our approach takes into account the full infinite series for the effective pair-interaction kernel, so that all possible two-body sub-processes allowed by the underlying Hamiltonian are retained.

Abstract:It is shown that by allowing for an effective mass increase in the corpuscular theory of light, the particle travels slower rather than faster on entering an optically denser medium. The viewpoint and results are consistent with the photon description. The method leads to an improved treatment of the Newtonian deflection of light in a gravitational field, and the relation of this deflection to the general relativistic deflection is considerably clarified. It is pointed out that the gravitational index of refraction and the electromagnetic index of refraction are not equivalent as regards the motion of charged particles.

Abstract:The dynamics of an electron driven by arbitrary plane wave laser radiation is formulated as a relativistically and mathematically exact refraction process based on an exact index of refraction. This reformulation leads to that index as an indicator of the energy transfer between the electron and the radiation. It also leads to the dynamics of the electron as being governed (i) by the Lorentzian version of what in Euclidean space is Snell's law, (ii) by an eikonal equation with the corresponding index of refraction, (iii) by geodesics on a spacetime manifold with in-general non-zero curvature ("geometrization of the laser radiation"), (iv) by the spacetime version of Fermat's principle of least time, (v) by a Lorentzian stability criterion for the circumstance which in Euclidean space corresponds to the propagation of rays passing through a periodic wave guide of lenses which all have the same focal length. That criterion demands that the laser intensity satisfy $I_{aver}<.56 x (10,000 $angstrom / lambda$)^2 x 10^{18}$watts/cm^2$.

Newton’s Theory of Light and Wave-Particle Duality

Abstract:The long history of the dispute among physicists as to whether matter is composed of particles or waves is reviewed. A turning point came at the dawn of the 20th century in the form of the de Broglie momentum-wavelength and Bohr/Planck energy frequency relations. It was on this basis that Schrödinger developed a quantum mechanical differential equation whose solution came to be known as a wave function. The Born Interpretation of these functions holds that their absolute square constitutes a probability distribution which has been used successfully to make predictions of the properties of the system under discussion. It is pointed out that the phenomenon of light refraction played a key role in the development of both Newton’s corpuscular theory of light and the competing theory of Huygens which looks upon light as consisting exclusively of waves. It is shown that Newton’s failure to predict the decrease in the speed of light as it passes from air into water was not because of his belief in the particle composition of light, but rather because he not did anticipate that the mass of a photon changes upon entering a medium of higher index of refraction n. By assuming that the energy E of light is equal pc/n, where p is the momentum of the photons and c is the speed of light in free space, it is shown that the experimental dependence of the speed the light on its wavelength as it passes through a transparent medium is derived successfully through the use of Hamilton’s Canonical Equations and Newton’s Second Law of Kinetics. It is suggested that the relationship between particles and waves can be understood by noting that the localized properties of matter exhibit themselves in experiments such as the photoelectric effect where attention can be concentrated on the behavior of a single particle. The corresponding wave properties occur when large numbers of particles are observed under exactly similar circumstances, as for example in electron diffraction. ...........
Snell's law in multirefringent systems

Abstract:In anisotropic crystals, Maxwell's equations permit only birefringence for the propagation of light. Notwithstanding, multirefringent systems comprising more than two propagating modes exist, such as in electron optics and photonic crystals. It has been demonstrated that in such systems, the propagation of waves in the short wavelength limit results in the formation of anomalous caustics. To calculate these caustic curves, we generalized Snell's law valid for reflection and refraction in multirefringent systems possessing more than one propagating mode. The emergence of anomalous caustics in the wave function patterns obtained from rigorous quantum mechanical calculations in electron-optical systems is confirmed. These calculations were performed on electron scattering from circularly gated potential regions applied to multilayer rhombohedral graphene. Our results may generate further work to explore more complex phenomena in multirefringent systems.

Abstract:A unique perspective approach based on an analogy method is presented to solve the ray equation in a model of a continuous inhomogeneous medium, which has a spherically symmetric distribution. Basically, in the standard undergraduate physics teaching, the curved ray path caused by refraction in a medium with a continuously varying refractive index has always been a relatively difficult problem to solve. The equation is usually expressed in terms of partial differential equations (PDEs), which cannot be solved by analytical methods. Based on the analogy method, this work proposes the correspondence between ray refraction in an established medium model and the inverse-square central force system, succinctly obtaining their relation equations mathematically. We also verify the correctness of the method by qualitative and quantitative analysis. In terms of theoretical validation, we analyse the relation between Fermat's principle and Hamilton's principle, which lays a theoretical foundation for the analogy method. In addition, ray paths in the medium model were also simulated by numerical calculations based on COMSOL Multiphysics, and the results are in perfect agreement with the conclusions.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss how the concepts of Hamiltonian optics are internally connected to the scalar wave theory of light rays. It is shown that the solutions of the reduced wave equation are similar to Huygen's wavelets, and they can be used to understand Snell's law of refraction. This model can also be used to derive the coefficient of reflection consistent with Fresnel's equation for $s$-polarized light.

Refractive index for the mechanical refraction of a relativistic particle

Abstract:We have analytically determined the refractive index for the mechanical refraction of a relativistic particle for its all possible speeds. We have critically analysed the importance of Descartes' metaphysical theory and extended it in this regard. We have considered the conservation of the tangential component of the relativistic momentum and the relativistic energy of the particle in the process of the mechanical refraction within the optical-mechanical analogy. Our result for the mechanical refractive index exactly matches with the forms of both the Fermat's result on Snell's law of optical refraction at the ultra-relativistic limit and the Descartes' metaphysical result on the pseudo-Snell law of optical refraction at the non-relativistic limit.

Abstract:In most analytical studies of light ray propagation in curved spacetimes around a gravitating object surrounded by a medium, it is assumed that the medium is a cold nonmagnetized plasma. The distinctive feature of this environment is that the equations of motion of the rays are independent of the plasma velocity, which, however, is not the case in other media. In this paper, we consider the deflection of light rays propagating near a spherically symmetric gravitating object in a moving dispersive medium given by a general refractive index. The deflection is studied when the motion of the medium is defined either as a radially falling onto a gravitating object (e.g., black hole), or rotating in the equatorial plane. For both cases the deflection angles are obtained. These examples demonstrate that fully analytic expressions can be obtained if the Hamiltonian for the rays takes a rather general form as a polynomial in a given momentum component. The general expressions are further applied to three specific choices of refractive indices, and these cases are compared. Furthermore, the light rays propagating around a gravitating object surrounded by a generally moving medium are further studied as a small perturbation of the cold plasma model. The deflection angle formula is hence expressed as a sum of zeroth and first order components, where the zeroth order term corresponds to the known cold plasma case, and the first order correction can be interpreted as caused by small difference in the refractive index compared to the cold plasma. Abstract:The refraction of a light ray by a homogeneous, isotropic and non-dispersive transparent material half-space in uniform rectilinear motion is investigated theoretically. The approach is an amalgamation of the original Fermat's principle and the fact that an isotropic optical medium at rest becomes optically anisotropic in a frame where the medium is moving at a constant velocity. Two cases of motion are considered: a) the material half-space is moving parallel to the interface; b) the material half-space is moving perpendicular to the interface. In each case, a detailed analysis of the obtained refraction formula is provided, and in the latter case, an intriguing backward refraction of light is noticed and thoroughly discussed. The results confirm the validity of Fermat's principle when the optical media and the boundaries between them are moving at relativistic speeds.

Abstract:In the 17th and 18th centuries, several natural philosophers studied the phenomenon of refraction and attempted to obtain the Snell law from various assumptions. Lacking experimental data, it was generally believed that light travels faster in a refracting medium than in air. In the present article, I review the contributions to the problem of light refraction by Descartes, Fermat, Huygens, Leibniz, Newton, Clairaut, and finally Maupertuis who established a principle of least action based on his own approach to the problem.

Abstract:This work considers the way that quantum loop effects modify the propagation of light in curved space. The calculation of the refractive index for scalar QED is reviewed and then extended for the first time to QED with spinor particles in the loop. It is shown how, in both cases, the low frequency phase velocity can be greater than c, as found originally by Drummond and Hathrell, but causality is respected in the sense that retarded Green functions vanish outside the lightcone. A "phenomenology" of the refractive index is then presented for black holes, FRW universes and gravitational waves. In some cases, some of the polarization states propagate with a refractive index having a negative imaginary part indicating a potential breakdown of the optical theorem in curved space and possible instabilities.

The fundamental postulate is that any train of waves may be replaced by a sheet of sources of suitable intensities and phases, that is, paths such as APCB of Fig. 1 of Mr. Darbyshire's letter are to be taken into consideration equally with paths like AQDB. Of all possible paths, the rays of geometrical optics are found to be stationary paths and so suitable for phase calculations; this is the essence of Fermat's Principle.

Abstract:We provide a systematic theoretical, experimental, and historical critique of the standard derivation of Fresnel's equations, which shows in particular that these well-established equations actually contradict the traditional, macroscopic approach to electrodynamics in media. Subsequently, we give a rederivation of Fresnel's equations which is exclusively based on the microscopic Maxwell equations and hence in accordance with modern first-principles materials physics. In particular, as a main outcome of this analysis being of a more general interest, we propose the most general boundary conditions on electric and magnetic fields which are valid on the microscopic level.

Abstract:The wave equation of light beam propagation was written in the form of an axial-coordinate-dependent Schrödinger equation, and the expectation value of a dynamical variable, the trial function of variational approach and the ABCD law were discussed by use of quantum mechanics approach. In view of the evolution equations of expectation values of dynamical variables in the framework of quantum mechanics, the definition of a potential function representing the beam propagation stability and its universal formula with the quality factor, the universal formula of beam width and curvature radius for a paraxial beam and cylindrically symmetric non-paraxial beam, the general formula of second derivative of beam width with respect to the axial coordinate of beam for a paraxial beam, and the general criteria of the conservation of beam quality factor and the existence of a potential well of a potential function for a paraxial beam, were given or derived, respectively. Starting with the same trial function, the comparative research of our formulation with variational approach was done, which gave some further insight into the physical nature of a beam propagation parameters. The ABCD law of nonparaxial beam was discussed in terms of the definition of the non-paraxial expectation value of a dynamical variable for the first time. The applications to the media of constant second derivative of beam width with respect to the axial coordinate of a beam, square law media and the media of constant refractive index in the momentum representation were discussed, respectively.

Abstract:Typically the use of the Rayleigh-Sommerfeld diffraction formula as a photon propagator is widely accepted due to the abundant experimental evidence that suggests that it works. However, a direct link between the propagation of the electromagnetic field in classical optics and the propagation of photons where the square of the probability amplitude describes the transverse probability of the photon detection is still an issue to be clarified. We develop a mathematical formulation for the photon propagation using the formalism of electromagnetic field quantization and the path-integral method, whose main feature is its similarity with a fractional Fourier transform (FrFT). Here we show that, because of the close relation existing between the FrFT and the Fresnel diffraction integral, this propagator can be written as a Fresnel diffraction, which brings forward a discussion of the fundamental character of it at the photon level compared to the Huygens-Fresnel principle. Finally, we carry out an experiment of photon counting by a rectangular slit supporting the result that the diffraction phenomenon in the Fresnel approximation behaves as the actual classical limit.

Does light slowdown in dielectric media?

Abstract:Observations and theoretical principles indicate that electromagnetic waves, including light, propagate in dielectric media at speeds lower than those in free space, as eloquently expressed in Maxwell's equations featuring material-dependent permittivity and permeability. This study reveals that the observed slower propagation of waves in dielectric media arises from an interference between two types of waves: a forward-moving primary wave and a set of secondary waves induced by the primary wave's interaction with the medium. The forward-moving primary wave and secondary waves travel at the speed of light in vacuum. Notably, the reflected wave caused by the impedance discontinuity on the boundary of a dielectric medium is manifested by the induced secondary waves moving in the opposite direction to the primary wave. From a photonic point of view, photons will be moving back and forth below the slowly moving apparent front of the observed wave with the speed of light in vacuum. Ahead of this front the probability of finding photons is zero due to complete destructive interference of the waves in that region. From a photonic perspective, beneath the gradually advancing facade of the observed wave, photons move at the unyielding speed of light in vacuum. The likelihood of detecting photons ahead of the front diminishes to zero, a consequence of the thorough destructive interference manifesting within that specific region.

Exact boundary-value solution for an electromagnetic wave propagating in a linearly-varying index of refraction

Abstract:The propagation of electromagnetic waves in a linearly-varying index of refraction is a fundamental problem in wave physics, being relevant in fusion science for describing certain wave-based heating and diagnostic schemes. Here, an exact solution is obtained for a given incoming wavefield specified on the boundary transverse to the direction of inhomogeneity by performing a spectral, rather than asymptotic, matching. Two case studies are then presented: a Gaussian beam at oblique incidence and a speckled wavefield at normal incidence. For the Gaussian beam, it is shown that when the waist $W$ is sufficiently large, oblique incidence manifests simply as rigid translation and focal shift of the corresponding diffraction pattern at normal incidence. The destruction of the hyperbolic umbilic caustic (corresponding to a critically focused beam) as $W$ is reduced is then demonstrated. The caustic disappears once $W \lesssim \delta_a \sqrt{L}$ ($L$ being the medium lengthscale normalized by the Airy skin depth $\delta_a$), at which point the wave behavior is increasingly described by Airy functions, but experiences less focusing as a result. To maximize the intensity of a launched Gaussian beam at a turning point, one should therefore minimize the imaginary part of the launched complex beam parameter while having the real part satisfy critical focusing. For the speckled wavefield, it is shown that the transverse speckle pattern only couples to the Airy longitudinal pattern when the coupling parameter $\eta = \sqrt{L}/f_\#$ is large, with $f_\#$ being the f-number of the launching aperture. When $\eta \ll 1$, a reduced description of the total wavefield can be obtained by simply multiplying the incoming speckle pattern with the Airy swelling.

Determination of complex refractive index using prism composed of absorbing medium

Abstract:In light refraction between two transparent media, Snell’s law describes the relationship between the incident angle and refraction angle. The refractive index is usually determined from Snell’s law using the minimum deviation angle through a prism. A medium that partially absorbs light has complex permittivity (or permeability), and its refractive index has an imaginary part. Because of the imaginary part, Snell's law does not hold for light-absorbing media. Accordingly, other methods are required to determine the complex value of the refractive index in a light-absorbing medium. The exact solution of Maxwell’s equations was obtained for light passing through a prism composed of a light-absorbing medium. Thereby the optical path was determined. The difference of optical paths between light-absorbing medium and transparent medium was calculated numerically. The difference is very large in the neighborhood of perfect reflection area of transparent medium. We found two methods to determine the complex value of the refractive index using the optical path. Both methods analyzed the solutions in detail for two specific incident angles. The deviation angles corresponding to the two incident angles determined the complex value of the prism’s refractive index. Of course, the obtained refractive index depends only on the material making up the prism, not on the apex angle of the prism.

Abstract:We present a solution to the problem of partial reflection and refraction of a polarized paraxial Gaussian beam at the interface between two transparent media. The Fedorov--Imbert transverse shift of the centers of gravity of the reflected and refracted beams are calculated. Our results differ in general case from ones derived previously by other authors. In particular, they obey general conservation law for the beams' total angular momentum but do not obey one-particle conservation laws for individual photons, which have been proposed by Onoda et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 083901 (2004)]. We ascertain that these circumstances relate to the accepted in the literature artificial model for the polarized beam which does not fit to real beams. The present paper resolves the recent controversy and confirms results of our previous paper [Bliokh et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 073903 (2006)]. Besides, a diffraction effect of angular transverse shift of the reflected and refracted beams is predicted.
