Abstract:This is an exposition of some recent developments related to the object in the title, particularly the combinatorial computation of the (genus 0) Gromov-Witten invariants of the flag manifold and the quadratic algebra approach. Abstract:The (small) quantum cohomology ring of a flag manifold F encodes enumerative geometry of rational curves on F. We give a proof of the presentation of the ring and of a quantum Giambelli formula, which is more direct and geometric than the previously known proof. Furthermore, this proof gives a relationship between quantum Schubert polynomials and universal Schubert polynomials, which arise in a degeneracy locus formula of Fulton.

Abstract:We observe a general structure theorem for quantum cohomology rings, a non-homogeneous version of the usual cohomology ring encoding information about (almost holomorphic) rational curves. An application is the rigorous computation of the quantum cohomology of Grassmannians. As purely algebraic consequence we prove a beautiful formula of Vafa and Intriligator for intersection numbers of certain compactifications of moduli spaces of maps from a Riemann surface (any genus) to G(k,n) which recently has excited many mathematicians. The formula generalizes to any Fano manifold whose cohomology ring can be presented as complete intersection.

Abstract:We construct a ring structure on complex cobordism tensored with the rationals, which is related to the usual ring structure as quantum cohomology is related to ordinary cohomology. The resulting object defines a generalized two- dimensional topological field theory taking values in a category of spectra.

Abstract:We give an expository account of a conjecture, developed by Coates-Iritani-Tseng and Ruan, which relates the quantum cohomology of a Gorenstein orbifold X to the quantum cohomology of a crepant resolution Y of X. We explore some consequences of this conjecture, showing that it implies versions of both the Cohomological Crepant Resolution Conjecture and of the Crepant Resolution Conjectures of Ruan and Bryan-Graber. We also give a 'quantized' version of the conjecture, which determines higher-genus Gromov-Witten invariants of X from those of Y.

Abstract:Consider the generalized flag manifold $G/B$ and the corresponding affine flag manifold $\mathcal{Fl}_G$. In this paper we use curve neighborhoods for Schubert varieties in $\mathcal{Fl}_G$ to construct certain affine Gromov-Witten invariants of $\mathcal{Fl}_G$, and to obtain a family of "affine quantum Chevalley" operators $\Lambda_0, \ldots, \Lambda_n$ indexed by the simple roots in the affine root system of $G$. These operators act on the cohomology ring $\mathrm{H}^*(\mathcal{Fl}_G)$ with coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}[q_0, \ldots,q_n]$. By analyzing commutativity and invariance properties of these operators we deduce the existence of two quantum cohomology rings, which satisfy properties conjectured earlier by Guest and Otofuji for $G= \mathrm{SL}_n(\mathbb{C})$. The first quantum ring is a deformation of the subalgebra of $\mathrm{H}^*(\mathcal{Fl}_G)$ generated by divisors. The second ring, denoted $\mathrm{QH}^*_{\mathrm{af}}(G/B)$, deforms the ordinary quantum cohomology ring $\mathrm{QH}^*(G/B)$ by adding an affine quantum parameter $q_0$. We prove that $\mathrm{QH}^*_{\mathrm{af}}(G/B)$ is a Frobenius algebra, and that the new quantum product determines a flat Dubrovin connection. Further, we develop an analogue of Givental and Kim formalism for this ring and we deduce a presentation of $\mathrm{QH}^*_{\mathrm{af}}(G/B)$ by generators and relations. The ideal of relations is generated by the integrals of motion for the periodic Toda lattice associated to the dual of the extended Dynkin diagram of $G$.

Abstract:We utilize physics arguments, and the nonabelian/abelian correspondence, to relate the Givental and Lee's quantum K theory ring of Grassmannians to a twisted variant of the quantum cohomology ring. Furthermore, the quantum K pairing is related to correlators arising from supersymmetric localization. We state some mathematical conjectures, which we illustrate in several examples.

Abstract:Let $\mbox{IG}:=\mbox{IG}(2,2n+1)$ denote the odd symplectic Grassmannian of lines which is a horospherical variety of Picard rank 1. The quantum cohomology ring $\mbox{QH}^*(\mbox{IG})$ has negative structure constants. For $n \geq 3$, we give a positivity condition that implies the quantum cohomology ring $\mbox{QH}^*(\mbox{IG})$ is the only quantum deformation of the cohomology ring $\mbox{H}^*(\mbox{IG})$ up to the scaling of the quantum parameter. This is a modification of a conjecture by Fulton.

Quantum cohomology and Fukaya summands from monotone Lagrangian tori

Abstract:Let $L$ be a monotone Lagrangian torus inside a compact symplectic manifold $X$, with superpotential $W_L$. We show that a geometrically-defined closed-open map induces a decomposition of the quantum cohomology $\operatorname{QH}^*(X)$ into a product, where one factor is the localisation of the Jacobian ring $\operatorname{Jac} W_L$ at the set of isolated critical points of $W_L$. The proof involves describing the summands of the Fukaya category corresponding to this factor -- verifying the expectations of mirror symmetry -- and establishing an automatic generation criterion in the style of Ganatra and Sanda, which may be of independent interest. We apply our results to understanding the structure of quantum cohomology and to constraining the possible superpotentials of monotone tori

Abstract:We propose a new point of view on quantum cohomology, strongly motivated by the work of Givental and Dubrovin, but closer to differential geometry than the existing approaches. The central object is the D-module which "quantizes" a commutative algebra associated to the (uncompactified) space of rational curves. A standard loop group factorization procedure converts the D-module to Givental's D-module and the commutative algebra to the quantum cohomology algebra. We apply this only to the small quantum cohomology of full flag manifolds and semi-positive toric manifolds, but even in these cases the method is effective. In particular it gives an algorithm (requiring construction of a Groebner basis and solution of a system of o.d.e.) for the quantum product.

On the generic part of the cohomology of non-compact unitary Shimura varieties

Abstract:We prove that the generic part of the mod l cohomology of Shimura varieties associated to quasi-split unitary groups of even dimension is concentrated above the middle degree, extending our previous work to a non-compact case. The result applies even to Eisenstein cohomology classes coming from the locally symmetric space of the general linear group, and has been used in joint work with Allen, Calegari, Gee, Helm, Le Hung, Newton, Taylor and Thorne to get good control on these classes and deduce potential automorphy theorems without any self-duality hypothesis. Our main geometric result is a computation of the fibers of the Hodge-Tate period map on compactified Shimura varieties, in terms of similarly compactified Igusa varieties.

Abstract:In algebraic geometry, Gromov--Witten invariants are enumerative invariants that count the number of complex curves in a smooth projective variety satisfying some incidence conditions. In 2001, A. Givental and Y.P. Lee defined new invariants, called $K$-theoretical Gromov--Witten invariants. These invariants are obtained by replacing cohomological constructions used in the definition of the usual Gromov--Witten invariants by their $K$-theoretical analogues. Then, an essential question is to understand how these two invariants are related. In 2013, Iritani-Givental-Milanov-Tonita show that $K$-theoretical Gromov--Witten invariants can be embedded in a function which satisfies a $q$-difference equation. In general, these equations verify a property called "confluence", which guarantees that we can take some limit of these functional equations to obtain differential equations. In this thesis, we propose to compare the two Gromov--Witten theories through the confluence of $q$-difference equation. We show that, in the case of complex projective spaces, the confluence of Givental's small $K$-theoretical $J$-function as a solution of a $q$-difference equations outputs its cohomological analogue.

Abstract:The Gamma-class is a characteristic class for complex manifolds with transcendental coefficients. It defines an integral structure of quantum cohomology, or more precisely, an integral lattice in the space of flat sections of the quantum connection. We present several conjectures (the Gamma-conjectures) about this structure, particularly focusing on the Riemann-Hilbert problem it poses. We also discuss a conjectural functoriality of quantum cohomology under birational transformations.

Quantum cohomology of twistor spaces and their Lagrangian submanifolds

Abstract:We compute the classical and quantum cohomology rings of the twistor spaces of 6-dimensional hyperbolic manifolds and the eigenvalues of quantum multiplication by the first Chern class. Given a half-dimensional totally geodesic submanifold we associate, after Reznikov, a monotone Lagrangian submanifold of the twistor space. In the case of a 3-dimensional totally geodesic submanifold of a hyperbolic 6-manifold we compute the obstruction term $m_0$ in the Fukaya-Floer $A_{\infty}$-algebra of a Reznikov Lagrangian and calculate the Lagrangian quantum homology. There is a well-known correspondence between the possible values of $m_0$ for a Lagrangian with nonvanishing Lagrangian quantum homology and eigenvalues for the action of $c_1$ on quantum cohomology by quantum cup product. Reznikov's Lagrangians account for most of these eigenvalues but there are four exotic eigenvalues we cannot account for.
