Abstract:This is an expository article about the recent results on the relation between the naturality problem of quantum cohomology and birational geometry. We give a short survey on Li-Ruan's results. Some conjecture-proposals are discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, we attempt to determine the quantum cohomology of projective bundles over the projective space P^n. In contrast to the previous examples, the relevant moduli spaces in our case frequently do not have expected dimensions. It makes the calculation more difficult. We overcome this difficulty by using excessive intersection theory.

Abstract:We give an expository account of a conjecture, developed by Coates-Iritani-Tseng and Ruan, which relates the quantum cohomology of a Gorenstein orbifold X to the quantum cohomology of a crepant resolution Y of X. We explore some consequences of this conjecture, showing that it implies versions of both the Cohomological Crepant Resolution Conjecture and of the Crepant Resolution Conjectures of Ruan and Bryan-Graber. We also give a 'quantized' version of the conjecture, which determines higher-genus Gromov-Witten invariants of X from those of Y.

Abstract:We use virtual neighborhood technique to establish GW-invariants, Quantum cohomology, equivariant GW-invariants, equivariant quantum cohomology and Floer cohomology for general symplectic manifold. We also establish GW-invariants for a family of symplectic manifolds. As a consequence, we prove Arnold conjecture for nondegenerate Hamiltonian symplectomorphisms.

Abstract:We define relative Gromov-Witten invariants and establish a general gluing theory of pseudo-holomorphic curves for symplectic cutting and contact surgery. Then, we use our general gluing theory to study the change of GW-invariants of Calabi-Yau 3-folds tranform under flops and extremal transitions. We prove a complete formula for the change of GW-invariants of any genus transform under flop and a general type I extremal transition. Other extremal transition will be handled in a subsequent paper.

Abstract:We determine which integral surgeries on a large class of circular chain links bound rational homology balls. Our key tool is the lattice-theoretic cubiquity obstruction recently developed by Greene and Owens. We discuss a practical method of computing it, and, as an application, prove that a generalisation of the slice--ribbon conjecture holds for all but one infinite family of quasi-alternating 3-braid links. This extends previous results of Lisca concerning the conjecture for 3-braid knots.

Abstract:To formulate the universal constraints of quantum statistics data of generic long-range entangled quantum systems, we introduce the geometric-topology surgery theory on spacetime manifolds where quantum systems reside, cutting and gluing the associated quantum amplitudes, specifically in 2+1 and 3+1 spacetime dimensions. First, we introduce the fusion data for worldline and worldsheet operators capable of creating anyonic excitations of particles and strings, well-defined in gapped states of matter with intrinsic topological orders. Second, we introduce the braiding statistics data of particles and strings, such as the geometric Berry matrices for particle-string Aharonov-Bohm, 3-string, 4-string, or multi-string adiabatic loop braiding process, encoded by submanifold linkings, in the closed spacetime 3-manifolds and 4-manifolds. Third, we derive new `quantum surgery' formulas and constraints, analogous to Verlinde formula associating fusion and braiding statistics data via spacetime surgery, essential for defining the theory of topological orders, 3d and 4d TQFTs and potentially correlated to bootstrap boundary physics such as gapless modes, extended defects, 2d and 3d conformal field theories or quantum anomalies. This article is meant to be an extended and further detailed elaboration of our previous work [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1602.05951" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1602.05951">arXiv:1602.05951</a>] and Chapter 6 of [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1602.05569" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1602.05569">arXiv:1602.05569</a>]. Our theory applies to general quantum theories and quantum mechanical systems, also applicable to, but not necessarily requiring the quantum field theory description.

Abstract:We prove a surgery formula for the ordinary Seiberg-Witten invariants, and surgery formulas for the families Seiberg-Witten invariants of families of $4$-manifolds obtained through fibrewise surgery. Our formula expresses the Seiberg-Witten invariants of the manifold after the surgery, in terms of the original Seiberg-Witten moduli space cut down by a cohomology class in the configuration space. We use these surgery formulas to study how a surgery can preserve or produce exotic phenomena.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with quantum cohomology and Fukaya categories of a closed monotone symplectic manifold X, where we use coefficients in a field k of characteristic p > 0. The main result of this paper is that the quantum Steenrod operations Q\Sigma admit an interpretation in terms of certain operations on the (equivariant) Hochschild invariants of the Fukaya category of X, via suitable (equivariant) versions of the open-closed maps. As an application, we demonstrate how the categorical perspective provides new tools for computing Q\Sigma beyond the reach of known technology. We also explore potential connections of our work to arithmetic homological mirror symmetry.

Abstract:Symmetries of Seiberg-Witten (SW) geometries capture intricate physical aspects of the underlying 4d $\mathcal{N} = 2$ field theories. For rank-one theories, these geometries are rational elliptic surfaces whose automorphism group is a semi-direct product between the Coulomb branch (CB) symmetries and the Mordell-Weil group. We study quotients of the SW geometry by subgroups of its automorphism group, which most naturally become gaugings of discrete 0- and 1-form symmetries. Yet, new interpretations of these surgeries become evident when considering 5d $\mathcal{N}=1$ superconformal field theories. There, certain CB symmetries are related to symmetries of the corresponding $(p,q)$-brane web and, as a result, CB surgeries can give rise to (fractional) S-folds. Another novel interpretation of these quotients is the folding across dimensions: circle compactifications of the 5d $E_{2N_f + 1}$ Seiberg theories lead in the infrared to two copies of locally indistinguishable 4d SU(2) SQCD theories with $N_f$ fundamental flavours. This extends earlier results on holonomy saddles, while also reproducing detailed computations of 5d BPS spectra and predicting new 5d and 6d BPS quivers. Finally, we argue that the semi-direct product structure of the automorphism group of the SW geometry includes mixed 't Hooft anomalies between the 0- and 1-form symmetries, and we also present some new results on non-cyclic CB symmetries.

Abstract:It is well-known that an n-dimensional Poincar\'{e} complex $X^n$, $n \ge 5$, has the homotopy type of a compact topological $n$-manifold if the total surgery obstruction $s(X^n)$ vanishes. The present paper discusses recent attempts to prove analogous result in dimension 4. We begin by reviewing the necessary algebraic and controlled surgery theory. Next, we discuss the key idea of Quinn's approach. Finally, we present some cases of special fundamental groups, due to the authors and to Yamasaki.

Abstract:We study a family of birational maps of smooth affine quadric 3-folds, {over the complex numbers}, of the form $x_1x_4-x_2x_3=$ constant, which seems to have some (among many others) interesting/unexpected characters: a) they are cohomologically hyperbolic, b) their second dynamical degree is an algebraic number but not an algebraic integer, and c) the logarithmic growth of their periodic points is strictly smaller than their algebraic entropy. These maps are restrictions of a polynomial map on $\mathbb{C}^4$ preserving each of the quadrics. The study in this paper is a mixture of rigorous and experimental ones, where for the experimental study we rely on Bertini which is a reliable and fast software for expensive numerical calculations in complex algebraic geometry.

A surgery formula for Seiberg-Witten invariants

Abstract:We prove a surgery formula for the ordinary Seiberg-Witten invariants of smooth $4$-manifolds with $b_1 =1$. Our formula expresses the Seiberg-Witten invariants of the manifold after the surgery, in terms of the original Seiberg-Witten moduli space cut down by a cohomology class in the configuration space. This formula can be used to find exotic smooth structures on nonsimply connected $4$-manifolds, and gives a lower bound of the genus of an embedding surface in nonsimply connected $4$-manifolds. In forthcoming work, we will extend these results to give a surgery formula for the families Seiberg-Witten invariants.

Quantum modularity for a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold

Abstract:This paper proves quantum modularity of both functions from $\mathbb{Q}$ and $q$-series associated to the closed manifold obtained by $-1/2$ surgery on the figure-eight knot, $4_1(-1,2)$. In a sense, this is a companion to work of Garoufalidis-Zagier where similar statements were studied in detail for some simple knots. It is shown that quantum modularity for closed manifolds provides a unification of Chen-Yang's volume conjecture with Witten's asymptotic expansion conjecture. Additionally we show that $4_1(-1,2)$ is a counter-example to previous conjectures relating the Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariant and the $\widehat{Z}(q)$ series. This could be reformulated in terms of a "strange identity", which gives a volume conjecture for the $\widehat{Z}$ invariant. Using factorisation of state integrals, we give conjectural but precise $q$-hypergeometric formulae for generating series of Stokes constants of this manifold. We find that the generating series of Stokes constants is related to the 3d index of Dimofte-Gaiotto-Gukov of $4_1(-1,2)$ proposed by Gang-Yonekura. This extends the equivalent conjecture of Garoufalidis-Gu-Mariño for knots to closed manifolds. This work appeared in a similar form in the author's thesis.

Abstract:We survey our recent papers (some being joint ones) about the relation between the geometry of a compact Kähler manifold and the existence of automorphisms of positive entropy on it. We also use the language of log minimal model program (LMMP) in biraitonal geometry, but not its more sophisticated technical part. We give applications of LMMP to positivity of log canonical divisor of a Mori / Brody / Lang hyperbolic (quasi-) projective (singular) variety.

Integer surgeries rational homology cobordant to lens spaces

Abstract:The Cyclic Surgery Theorem and Moser's work on surgeries on torus knots imply that for any non-trivial knot in $S^3$, there are at most two integer surgeries that produce a lens space. This paper investigates how many positive integer surgeries on a given knot in $S^3$ can produce a manifold rational homology cobordant to a lens space. Tools include Greene and McCoy's work on changemaker lattices which come from Heegaard Floer $d$-invariants, and Aceto-Celoria-Park's work on rational cobordisms and integral homology which is based on Lisca's work on lens spaces.

Abstract:The main result of this paper is a new and direct proof of the natural transformation from the surgery exact sequence in topology to the analytic K-theory sequence of Higson and Roe. Our approach makes crucial use of analytic properties and new index theorems for the signature operator on Galois coverings with boundary. These are of independent interest and form the second main theme of the paper. The main technical novelty is the use of large scale index theory for Dirac type operators that are perturbed by lower order operators.
