Abstract:Suppose that X is an orbifold. In general, KX is an orbifold vector bundle or a Q-divisor only. When the X is so called Gorenstein, KX is a bundle or a divisor. For Gorenstein orbifold, a resolution π : Y → X is called a crepant resolution if πKX = KY . Here, ”crepant” can be viewed as a minimality condition with respect to canonical bundle. Crepant resolution always exists when dimension is two or three. A nice way to construct it is to use Hilbert scheme of points. However, the crepant resolution in dimension three is not unique. Different crepant resolutions are connected by flops. When the dimension is bigger than four, the crepant resolution does not always exist. It is an extremely interesting problem in algebraic geometry to find out when it does exist. One of famous example is Hilbert scheme of points of algebraic surfaces, which is a crepant resolution of the symmetry product of an algebraic surface. It has long been an interesting problem to compute cohomology of Hilbert scheme of points of algebraic surfaces. A great deal of works has been done by algebraic geometors. As far as the author’s knowledge, everything has been computed except its ring structure. Among all the progress, a less known but crucial ingredient is the link to the orbifold cohomology of the symmetry product. Suppose that M is an algebraic surface. We use M [n] to denote the Hilbert scheme of points of length n of M . In 1994, in order to explain the modularity of the generating function ∑∞ n=1 χ(M [n])qn computed by Göttsche [G], Vafa-Witten [VW] computed ⊕nH (M/Sn,C). Motivated by orbifold conformal field theory, they directly wrote ⊕nH (M/Sn,C) as a ”Fock space” or a representation of Heisenberg algebra. Then, the generating function of Euler characteristic is interpreted as the correlation function of an elliptic curve. Therefore, it should be invariant under modular transformations of the elliptic curve. Orbifold string theory conjecture predicates that ⊕nH ∗(M [n],C) should also admit a representation of Heisenberg algebra. This conjecture was verified by a beautiful work of Nakajima [N] and others. One of theme of this short note is that the orbifold M/Sn will continue to play a crucial role to compute ring structure of H∗(M [n],C). During last two years, there was a surge of activities to study mathematics of the orbifold string theory, which author called the stringy orbifolds. A few curious physical concepts such as the orbifold Euler-Hodge numbers of global quotients found their places in a much broader and deeper theory. For example, a new cohomology (orbifold cohomology) was constructed [CR1]. The growth was so explosive that the author believes that there is an emerging new subject of mathematics. He learned in graduate school that the test of the relevance of a new theory has been the progress it made from old problems. Therefore, it is particularly significant to revisit the problem of computing the ring structure of M [n] and a crepant resolution in general. In [R2], the author proposed a conjecture in the case of a hyperkahler resolution.

Abstract:We give an expository account of a conjecture, developed by Coates-Iritani-Tseng and Ruan, which relates the quantum cohomology of a Gorenstein orbifold X to the quantum cohomology of a crepant resolution Y of X. We explore some consequences of this conjecture, showing that it implies versions of both the Cohomological Crepant Resolution Conjecture and of the Crepant Resolution Conjectures of Ruan and Bryan-Graber. We also give a 'quantized' version of the conjecture, which determines higher-genus Gromov-Witten invariants of X from those of Y.

Then, we generalize Vafa-Witten's notion of discrete torsion to general orbifold and examine its relation to local system. Finally, some examples are computed.

Abstract:An introduction to the theory of orbifolds from a modern perspective, combining techniques from geometry, algebraic topology and algebraic geometry. One of the main motivations, and a major source of examples, is string theory, where orbifolds play an important role. The subject is first developed following the classical description analogous to manifold theory, after which the book branches out to include the useful description of orbifolds provided by groupoids, as well as many examples in the context of algebraic geometry. Classical invariants such as de Rham cohomology and bundle theory are developed, a careful study of orbifold morphisms is provided, and the topic of orbifold K-theory is covered. The heart of this book, however, is a detailed description of the Chen-Ruan cohomology, which introduces a product for orbifolds and has had significant impact. The final chapter includes explicit computations for a number of interesting examples.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the Hochschild cohomology ring of convolution algebras associated to orbifolds, as well as their deformation quantizations. In the first case, the ring structure is given in terms of a wedge product on twisted polyvectorfields on the inertia orbifold. After deformation quantization, the ring structure defines a product on the cohomology of the inertia orbifold. We study the relation between this product and an S 1 -equivariant version of the Chen–Ruan product. In particular, we give a de Rham model for this equivariant orbifold cohomology.

Abstract:We initiate a systematic study on the cohomology rings of the moduli stack $\mathfrak{M}_{d,\chi}$ of semistable one-dimensional sheaves on the projective plane. We introduce a set of tautological relations of geometric origin, including Mumford-type relations, and prove that their ideal is generated by certain primitive relations via the Virasoro operators. Using BPS integrality and the computational efficiency of Virasoro operators, we show that our geometric relations completely determine the cohomology rings of the moduli stacks up to degree 5. As an application, we verify the refined Gopakumar--Vafa/Pandharipande--Thomas correspondence for local $\mathbb{P}^2$ in degree 5. Furthermore, we propose a substantially strengthened version of the $P=C$ conjecture, originally introduced by Shen and two of the authors. This can be viewed as an analogue of the $P=W$ conjecture in a compact and Fano setting.

Abstract:If two conical symplectic resolutions $X\to X_0$ and $X^!\to X_0^!$ are symplectic dual, the cohomology ring $H^*(X)$ and the coordinate ring of $\mathbb{C}^*$-fixed points in $X_0^!$ are expected to be isomorphic as graded algebras. This statement is called Hikita conjecture and it is known that the conjecture holds for some cases. In this paper, we deal with the cohomology of framed moduli spaces over the projective plane and the coordinate ring of $\mathbb{C}^*$- fixed points of $\mathbb{C}^{2n}/((\mathbb{Z}/r\mathbb{Z})\wr S_n) $ and show that these are isomorphic as graded vector spaces.

Abstract:We show that Chen-Ruan cohomology is a homotopy invariant in certain cases. We introduce the notion of a T-representation homotopy, which is a stringent form of homotopy under which Chen-Ruan cohomology is invariant. We show that while hyperkahler quotients of the cotangent bundle to a complex vector space by a circle S^1 (here termed weighted hyperprojective spaces) are homotopy equivalent to weighted projective spaces, they are not S^1-representation homotopic. Indeed, we show that their Chen-Ruan cohomology rings (over the rationals) are distinct.

Abstract:We adapt algorithms for resolving the singularities of complex algebraic varieties to prove that the natural map of homology theories from complex bordism to the bordism theory of complex derived orbifolds splits. In equivariant stable homotopy theory, our techniques yield a splitting of homology theories for the map from bordism to the equivariant bordism theory of a finite group $\Gamma$, given by assigning to a manifold its product with $\Gamma$. In symplectic topology, and using recent work of Abouzaid-McLean-Smith and Hirshi-Swaminathan, we conclude that one can define complex cobordism-valued Gromov-Witten invariant for arbirary (closed) symplectic manifolds. We apply our results to constrain the topology of the space of Hamiltonian fibrations over $S^2$. The methods we develop apply to normally complex orbifolds, and will hence lead to applications in symplectic topology that rely on moduli spaces of holomorphic curves with Lagrangian boundary conditions.

Chen--Ruan cohomology and orbifold Euler characteristic of moduli spaces of parabolic bundles

Abstract:We consider the moduli space of stable parabolic Higgs bundles of rank $r$ and fixed determinant, and having full flag quasi-parabolic structures over an arbitrary parabolic divisor on a smooth complex projective curve $X$ of genus $g$, with $g\,\geq\, 2$. The group $\Gamma$ of $r$-torsion points of the Jacobian of $X$ acts on this moduli space. We describe the connected components of the various fixed point loci of this moduli under non-trivial elements from $\Gamma$. When the Higgs field is zero, or in other words when we restrict ourselves to the moduli of stable parabolic bundles, we also compute the orbifold Euler characteristic of the corresponding global quotient orbifold. We also describe the Chen--Ruan cohomology groups of this orbifold under certain conditions on the rank and degree, and describe the Chen--Ruan product structure in special cases.

Abstract:Given a space with a circle action, we study certain cocyclic chain complexes and prove a theorem relating cyclic homology to $S^1$-equivariant homology, in the spirit of celebrated work of Jones. As an application, we describe a chain level refinement of the gravity algebra structure on the (negative) $S^1$-equivariant homology of the free loop space of a closed oriented smooth manifold, based on work of Irie on chain level string topology and work of Ward on an $S^1$-equivariant version of operadic Deligne's conjecture.

Abstract:Hypertoric varieties are hyperkähler analogues of toric varieties, and are constructed as abelian hyperkähler quotients of a quaternionic affine space. Just as symplectic toric orbifolds are determined by labelled polytopes, orbifold hypertoric varieties are intimately related to the combinatorics of hyperplane arrangements. By developing hyperkähler analogues of symplectic techniques developed by Goldin, Holm, and Knutson, we give an explicit combinatorial description of the Chen-Ruan orbifold cohomology of an orbifold hypertoric variety in terms of the combinatorial data of a rational cooriented weighted hyperplane arrangement. We detail several explicit examples, including some computations of orbifold Betti numbers (and Euler characteristics).

Abstract:Inspired by the simple fact that a compact $n$-dimensional manifold-with-boundary which satisfies Poincaré-Lefschetz duality of dimension $n$ has a boundary which itself satisfies Poincaré duality of dimension $n-1$, we show that the categorical formal punctured neighborhood of infinity, a canonical categorical construction associated to every $A_{\infty}$-category, has a weak proper Calabi-Yau structure of dimension $n-1$ whenever the original $A_{\infty}$-category admits a weak smooth Calabi-Yau structure of dimension $n$. Through the functoriality in Rabinowitz Floer theory, this leads to a chain-level weak proper Calabi-Yau structure on the Rabinowitz Fukaya category of a nondegenerate Liouville manifold, which homotopically perturbs the rigid but restrictive open-string pairing. This proper Calabi-Yau structure is also related to the closed-string Rabinowitz Floer cohomology, to which we construct a geometric map from Hochschild homology of the wrapped Fukaya category with coefficients in the Rabinowitz Fukaya category, comparing the dualities in the open and closed strings.
