Abstract:An introduction to the theory of orbifolds from a modern perspective, combining techniques from geometry, algebraic topology and algebraic geometry. One of the main motivations, and a major source of examples, is string theory, where orbifolds play an important role. The subject is first developed following the classical description analogous to manifold theory, after which the book branches out to include the useful description of orbifolds provided by groupoids, as well as many examples in the context of algebraic geometry. Classical invariants such as de Rham cohomology and bundle theory are developed, a careful study of orbifold morphisms is provided, and the topic of orbifold K-theory is covered. The heart of this book, however, is a detailed description of the Chen-Ruan cohomology, which introduces a product for orbifolds and has had significant impact. The final chapter includes explicit computations for a number of interesting examples.

Abstract:Elliptic genus was derived as the partition function in quantum field theory [26]. Mathematically it is the beautiful combination of topology of manifolds, index theory and modular forms (cf. [15], [10]). Elliptic genus for smooth manifolds has been well-studied. Recently, Borisov and Libgober ([3], [4]) proposed some definitions of elliptic genus for certain singular spaces, especially for complex orbifolds which is a global quotient M/G, here the finite group G acts holomorphically on complex variety M . Similar definitions have been introduced by string theorists in the 80s, in the study of orbifold string theory. One of their guiding principles is the modular invariance. More recently orbifold string theory has attracted the attention of geometers and topologists. For example Chen and Ruan (cf. [7], [22]) have defined orbifold cohomology and orbifold quantum cohomology groups. One of most important properties for elliptic genus is its rigidity property under compact Lie group action. For smooth manifolds, the rigidity and its generalizations have been well studied. Since orbifold elliptic genus is the partition function of orbifold string theory, it is natural to expect the rigidity property for orbifold elliptic genus. Although the global quotients from a very important class of orbifolds, many interesting orbifolds are not global quotients. For example, most of the Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces of weighted projective spaces are not global quotients. In this paper we define elliptic genus for general orbifolds which generalizes the definition of Borisov and Libgober, and prove their rigidity property. We actually introduce the more general elliptic genus involving twisted bundles and proved its rigidity. The idea of considering the weights in the definition of orbifold elliptic genus comes from [4] and our proof of the K-theory version of Witten rigidity theorems [21, §4]. The proof of the rigidity is again a combination of modular invariance and the index theory. Only more complicated combinatorics are involved in the definition and the proof. This paper is organized as follows: In Sections 1 and 2 we review the equivariant index theorem on orbifolds. We define orbifold elliptic genus and prove its rigidity for almost complex orbifolds in Section 3. Finally in Section 4 we introduce orbifold elliptic genus for spin orbifolds, and will study its rigidity property on a later occasion. Abstract:Suppose that X is an orbifold. In general, KX is an orbifold vector bundle or a Q-divisor only. When the X is so called Gorenstein, KX is a bundle or a divisor. For Gorenstein orbifold, a resolution π : Y → X is called a crepant resolution if πKX = KY . Here, ”crepant” can be viewed as a minimality condition with respect to canonical bundle. Crepant resolution always exists when dimension is two or three. A nice way to construct it is to use Hilbert scheme of points. However, the crepant resolution in dimension three is not unique. Different crepant resolutions are connected by flops. When the dimension is bigger than four, the crepant resolution does not always exist. It is an extremely interesting problem in algebraic geometry to find out when it does exist. One of famous example is Hilbert scheme of points of algebraic surfaces, which is a crepant resolution of the symmetry product of an algebraic surface. It has long been an interesting problem to compute cohomology of Hilbert scheme of points of algebraic surfaces. A great deal of works has been done by algebraic geometors. As far as the author’s knowledge, everything has been computed except its ring structure. Among all the progress, a less known but crucial ingredient is the link to the orbifold cohomology of the symmetry product. Suppose that M is an algebraic surface. We use M [n] to denote the Hilbert scheme of points of length n of M . In 1994, in order to explain the modularity of the generating function ∑∞ n=1 χ(M [n])qn computed by Göttsche [G], Vafa-Witten [VW] computed ⊕nH (M/Sn,C). Motivated by orbifold conformal field theory, they directly wrote ⊕nH (M/Sn,C) as a ”Fock space” or a representation of Heisenberg algebra. Then, the generating function of Euler characteristic is interpreted as the correlation function of an elliptic curve. Therefore, it should be invariant under modular transformations of the elliptic curve. Orbifold string theory conjecture predicates that ⊕nH ∗(M [n],C) should also admit a representation of Heisenberg algebra. This conjecture was verified by a beautiful work of Nakajima [N] and others. One of theme of this short note is that the orbifold M/Sn will continue to play a crucial role to compute ring structure of H∗(M [n],C). During last two years, there was a surge of activities to study mathematics of the orbifold string theory, which author called the stringy orbifolds. A few curious physical concepts such as the orbifold Euler-Hodge numbers of global quotients found their places in a much broader and deeper theory. For example, a new cohomology (orbifold cohomology) was constructed [CR1]. The growth was so explosive that the author believes that there is an emerging new subject of mathematics. He learned in graduate school that the test of the relevance of a new theory has been the progress it made from old problems. Therefore, it is particularly significant to revisit the problem of computing the ring structure of M [n] and a crepant resolution in general. In [R2], the author proposed a conjecture in the case of a hyperkahler resolution.

Then, we generalize Vafa-Witten's notion of discrete torsion to general orbifold and examine its relation to local system. Finally, some examples are computed.

Geometric Topology

Abstract:This paper is an exposition of the new subject of String Topology. We present an introduction to this exciting new area, as well as a survey of some of the latest developments, and our views about future directions of research. We begin with reviewing the seminal paper of Chas and Sullivan, which started String Topology by introducing a BV-algebra structure on the homology of a loop space of a manifold, then discuss the homotopy theoretic approach to String Topology, using the Thom-Pontrjagin construction, the cacti operad, and fat graphs. We review quantum field theories and indicate how string topology fits into the general picture. Other topics include an open-closed version of string topology, a Morse theoretic interpretation, relation to Gromov-Witten invariants, and "brane'' topology, which deals with sphere spaces. The paper is a joint account of the lecture series given by each of us at the 2003 Summer School on String Topology and Hochschild Homology in Almeria, Spain.

Abstract:Given a space with a circle action, we study certain cocyclic chain complexes and prove a theorem relating cyclic homology to $S^1$-equivariant homology, in the spirit of celebrated work of Jones. As an application, we describe a chain level refinement of the gravity algebra structure on the (negative) $S^1$-equivariant homology of the free loop space of a closed oriented smooth manifold, based on work of Irie on chain level string topology and work of Ward on an $S^1$-equivariant version of operadic Deligne's conjecture.

The Quasicrystalline String Landscape

Abstract:In this work we investigate a largely unexplored non-geometric corner of the string landscape: the quasicrystalline orbifolds. These exist at special points of the Narain moduli leading to frozen moduli and large quantum symmetries. Here we complete the classification and construction of quasicrystalline Narain lattices and use this to explore supersymmetric compactifications in $4\leq D\leq 6$ and with $4\leq Q\leq 16$ supercharges, leading to novel theories including theories with large quantum symmetries at all points in the moduli space. We anticipate these constructions will have many applications and in subsequent papers we apply these techniques to construct non-geometric F-theory models as well as new non-supersymmetric tachyon free models. Similarly these constructions can lead to constructing exotic matter representations in the string landscape.

Abstract:We systematically develop the explicit map between string vacua constructed in the Free Fermionic Formulation and their $\mathbb{Z}_2^N$ toroidal orbifold counterparts. We illustrate the map in various example classes of models, including cases relevant for string phenomenology, as well as in theories where space-time supersymmetry is broken by the stringy Scherk-Schwarz mechanism.

Abstract:We construct and study an algebraic analogue of the loop coproduct in string topology, also known as the Goresky-Hingston coproduct. Our algebraic setup, which under this analogy takes the place of the complex of chains on the free loop space of a possibly non-simply connected manifold, is the Hochschild chain complex of a smooth $A_{\infty}$-category equipped with a pre-Calabi-Yau structure and a trivialization of a version of the Chern character of its diagonal bimodule. The algebraic analogue of the loop coproduct is part of a more general mapping cone construction, which we describe in terms of the categorical formal punctured neighborhood of infinity associated to the underlying smooth $A_\infty$-category. We use a graphical formalism for $A_\infty$-categories and bimodules to describe explicit models for the operations and homotopies involved. We also compute explicitly the algebraic coproduct in the context of the string topology of spheres.

Abstract:A survey of new geometric flows motivated by string theories is provided. Their settings can range from complex geometry to almost-complex geometry to symplectic geometry. From the PDE viewpoint, many of them can be viewed as intermediate flows between the Ricci flow and the Kähler-Ricci flow, albeit often coupled to flows of additional fields. In particular, a survey is given of joint works of the author with Tristan Collins, Teng Fei, Bin Guo, Sebastien Picard, and Xiangwen Zhang.

Abstract:In this paper we propose a definition of torsion refined Gopakumar–Vafa (GV) invariants for Calabi–Yau threefolds with terminal nodal singularities that do not admit Kähler crepant resolutions. Physically, the refinement takes into account the charge of five-dimensional BPS states under a discrete gauge symmetry in M-theory. We propose a mathematical definition of the invariants in terms of the geometry of all non-Kähler crepant resolutions taken together. The invariants are encoded in the A-model topological string partition functions associated to non-commutative (nc) resolutions of the Calabi–Yau. Our main example will be a singular degeneration of the generic Calabi–Yau double cover of and leads to an enumerative interpretation of the topological string partition function of a hybrid Landau–Ginzburg model. Our results generalize a recent physical proposal made in the context of torus fibered Calabi–Yau manifolds by one of the authors and clarify the associated enumerative geometry.

Abstract:We study the orbifold singularities X = C 3 /Γ where Γ is a finite subgroup of SU (3).M-theory on this orbifold singularity gives rise to a 5d SCFT, which is investigated with two methods.The first approach is via 3d McKay correspondence which relates the group theoretic data of Γ to the physical properties of the 5d SCFT.In particular, the 1-form symmetry of the 5d SCFT is read off from the Mckay quiver of Γ in an elegant way.The second method is to explicitly resolve the singularity X and study the Coulomb branch information of the 5d SCFT, which is applied to toric, non-toric hypersurface and complete intersection cases.Many new theories are constructed, either with or without an IR quiver gauge theory description.We find that many resolved Calabi-Yau threefolds, X, contain compact exceptional divisors that are singular by themselves.Nonetheless, some of these theories are interpreted as the known rank-1 Seiberg E N theory.Moreover, for certain cases of Γ, the orbifold singularity C 3 /Γ can be embedded in an elliptic model and gives rise to a 6d (1,0) SCFT in the F-theory construction.Such 6d theory is naturally related to the 5d SCFT defined on the same singularity.We find examples of rank-1 6d SCFTs without a gauge group, which are different from the rank-1 E-string theory.

Abstract:We consider the question of how geometric structures of a Deligne-Mumford stack affect its Gromov-Witten invariants. The two geometric structures studied here are {\em gerbes} and {\em root constructions}. In both cases, we explain conjectures on Gromov-Witten theory for these stacks and survey some recent progress on these conjectures.
