Abstract:Much of progress in gamma-ray bursts has come from the studies of distant events (redshift z~1). The brightest GRBs are the most collimated events and seen across the Universe due to their brilliance. It has long been suspected that nearest (and most common) events have been missed because they are not so collimated or under-energetic or both. Here we report soft gamma-ray observations of GRB 031203, the nearest event to date (z=0.106). This event with a duration of 40 s and peak energy of >190 keV appears to be a typical long duration GRB. However, the isotropic gamma-ray energy <~10^50 erg, about three orders of magnitude smaller than the cosmological population. This event as well as the other nearby but somewhat controversial event GRB 980425 are clear outliers for the much discussed isotropic-energy peak-energy relation and luminosity spectral-lag relations. Radio calorimetry shows that both these events are under-energetic explosions. We conclude that there does indeed exist a large population of under-energetic events.

Abstract:We prove that any sequence of 4-dimensional log flips that begins with a klt pair (X,D) such that -(K+D) is numerically equivalent to an effective divisor, terminates. This implies termination of flips that begin with a log Fano pair and termination of flips in a relative birational setting. We also prove termination of directed flips with big K+D. As a consequence, we prove existence of minimal models of 4-dimensional dlt pairs of general type, existence of 5-dimensional log flips, and rationality of Kodaira energy in dimension 4.

Abstract:This is a revised version of my paper which appeared in J. Math. Sci. Univ. Tokyo. We prove that for a flipping contraction from a Gorenstein terminal 4-fold, the pull back of a general hyperplane section of the down-stair has only canonical singularities. Based on this fact and using Siu-Kawamata-Nakayama's extension theorem [Si], [Kaw4], [Kaw5] and [Nak2], we prove the existence of the flip of such a flipping contraction. Furthermore we classify such flipping contractions and the flips under some additional assumptions.

Abstract:We reduce the termination of flips to the termination of terminal flips and the ACC conjecture for minimal log discrepancies (mlds) for exceptionally non-canonical (enc) pairs, a class of very restrictive singularities. As a consequence, the ACC conjecture for enc pairs implies the termination of flips in dimension $4$. We also show that the termination of flips follows from the lower-semicontinuity for mlds for terminal pairs, and the ACC for mlds for terminal and enc pairs. Moreover, in dimension $3$, we give a rough classification of enc singularities, and prove the ACC for mlds for enc pairs. These two results provide a proof on the termination of flips in dimension $3$ which does not rely on any difficulty function.

Abstract:We prove that the ascending chain condition (ACC) for log canonical (lc) thresholds in dimension $d$ and Special Termination in dimension $d$ imply the termination of any sequence of log flips starting with a $d$-dimensional lc pair of nonnegative Kodaira dimension. In particular, in characteristic zero, the latter termination in dimension 4 follows from Alexeev-Borisov's conjecture in dimension 3.

Abstract:We shall investigate a flipping contraction g : X -> Y from a 4-fold X with at most isolated complete intersection singularities. If Y has an anti-bi-canonical divisor (=bi-elephant) with only rational singularities, then g carries an inductive structure chained up by blow-ups (La Torre Pendente), and in particular the flip exists. This naturally contains Miles Reid's `Pagoda' as an anti-canonical divisor (=elephant) and its proper transforms.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop a theory of diminished multiplier ideals on singular varieties which was introduced by Hacon, and developed by Lehmann. We prove a result regarding the termination of certain type of flips with scaling of an ample divisor if the Cartier index is bounded, and if $\kappa_{\sigma}(K_X+\Delta)\ge \dim X-1$ holds. The proof uses a theory of diminished multiplier ideal.

Abstract:We give an alternate proof of the main theorem of Kawamata's paper: Pluricanonical systems on minimal algebraic varieties. Our proof also works for varieties in class $\mathcal C$. We note that our proof is completely different from Kawamata's.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct and classify a new family of flips, called generalized Grassmannian flips, by generalizing the construction of standard flips for $\mathbb{P}^m\times \mathbb{P}^n$ to any generalized Grassmannian $G/P$, where $P$ is a maximal parabolic subgroup of a complex semi-simple algebraic group. In addition, we show that a 9-fold generalized Grassmannian flip for $Sp(6, \mathbb{C})$ satisfies the DK flip conjecture by Bondal-Orlov and Kawamata via mutation techniques by Kuznetsov and Thomas' chess game method.

Abstract:Brown constructed a series of threefold flips given by the GIT quotient of a hypersurface in C5. In this article, we classify threefold flips and flops which are the GIT quotients of complete intersections in C6. We also show that there are no more new examples as GIT quotients of complete intersections in Cn with n >= 7.

Abstract:Reversible Boolean Circuits are an interesting computational model under many aspects and in different fields, ranging from Reversible Computing to Quantum Computing. Our contribution is to describe a specific class of Reversible Boolean Circuits - which is as expressive as classical circuits - as a bi-dimensional diagrammatic programming language. We uniformly represent the Reversible Boolean Circuits we focus on as a free 3-category Toff. This formalism allows us to incorporate the representation of circuits and of rewriting rules on them, and to prove termination of rewriting. Termination follows from defining a non-identities-preserving functor from our free 3-category Toff into a suitable 3-category Move that traces the "moves" applied to wires inside circuits.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite subgroup of $\mathrm{SU}(4)$ whose elements have age not larger than one. In the first part of this paper, we define $K$-theoretic stable pair invariants on the crepant resolution of the affine quotient $\mathbb{C}^4/G$, and conjecture closed formulae for their generating series, expressed in terms of the root system of $G$. In the second part, we define degree zero Donaldson-Thomas invariants of Calabi-Yau 4-orbifolds, develop a vertex formalism that computes the invariants in the toric case and conjecture closed formulae for the quotient stacks $[\mathbb{C}^4/\mathbb{Z}_r]$, $[\mathbb{C}^4/\mathbb{Z}_2\times \mathbb{Z}_2]$. Combining these two parts, we formulate a crepant resolution correspondence which relates the above two theories.
