Abstract:We shall investigate flipping contractions from a semi-stable 4-fold $X$ whose degenerate fiber is a union of Cartier divisors which are terminal factorial 3-folds. Especially we shall prove that $X$ is smooth along the flipping locus, and that the flip exists for such contractions.

Abstract:When applied to statistical systems showing an arctic curve phenomenon, the tangent method assumes that a modification of the most external path does not affect the arctic curve. We strengthen this statement and also make it more concrete by observing a factorization property: if $Z^{}_{n+k}$ denotes a refined partition function of a system of $n+k$ non-crossing paths, with the endpoints of the $k$ most external paths possibly displaced, then at dominant order in $n$, it factorizes as $Z^{}_{n+k} \simeq Z^{}_{n} Z_k^{\rm out}$ where $Z_k^{\rm out}$ is the contribution of the $k$ most external paths. Moreover if the shape of the arctic curve is known, we find that the asymptotic value of $Z_k^{\rm out}$ is fully computable in terms of the large deviation function $L$ introduced in \cite{DGR19} (also called Lagrangean function). We present detailed verifications of the factorization in the Aztec diamond and for alternating sign matrices by using exact lattice results. Reversing the argument, we reformulate the tangent method in a way that no longer requires an extension of the domain, and which reveals the hidden role of the $L$ function. As a by-product, the factorization property provides an efficient way to conjecture the asymptotics of multirefined partition functions.

Flops for Complete Intersection Calabi-Yau Threefolds

Abstract:We study flops of Calabi-Yau threefolds realised as Kaehler-favourable complete intersections in products of projective spaces (CICYs) and identify two different types. The existence and the type of the flops can be recognised from the configuration matrix of the CICY, which also allows for constructing such examples. The first type corresponds to rows containing only 1s and 0s, while the second type corresponds to rows containing a single entry of 2, followed by 1s and 0s. We give explicit descriptions for the manifolds obtained after the flop and show that the second type of flop always leads to isomorphic manifolds, while the first type in general leads to non-isomorphic flops. The singular manifolds involved in the flops are determinantal varieties in the first case and more complicated in the second case. We also discuss manifolds admitting an infinite chain of flops and show how to identify these from the configuration matrix. Finally, we point out how to construct the divisor images and Picard group isomorphisms under both types of flops.

Abstract:We initiate the study of factorization centers of birational maps, and complete it for surfaces over a perfect field in this article. We prove that for every birational automorphism $\phi : X \dashrightarrow X$ of a smooth projective surface $X$ over a perfect field $k$, the blowup centers are isomorphic to the blowdown centers in every weak factorization of $\phi$. This implies that nontrivial L-equivalences of $0$-dimensional varieties cannot be constructed based on birational automorphisms of a surface. It also implies that rationality centers are well-defined for every rational surface $X$, namely there exists a $0$-dimensional variety intrinsic to $X$, which is blown up in any rationality construction of $X$.

Abstract:Representations of vertex operator algebras define sheaves of coinvariants and conformal blocks on moduli of stable pointed curves. Assuming certain finiteness and semisimplicity conditions, we prove that such sheaves satisfy the factorization conjecture and consequently are vector bundles. Factorization is essential to a recursive formulation of invariants, like ranks and Chern classes, and to produce new constructions of rational conformal field theories and cohomological field theories.

Abstract:This is a revised version of my paper which appeared in J. Math. Sci. Univ. Tokyo. We prove that for a flipping contraction from a Gorenstein terminal 4-fold, the pull back of a general hyperplane section of the down-stair has only canonical singularities. Based on this fact and using Siu-Kawamata-Nakayama's extension theorem [Si], [Kaw4], [Kaw5] and [Nak2], we prove the existence of the flip of such a flipping contraction. Furthermore we classify such flipping contractions and the flips under some additional assumptions.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate non-rationality of divisors on 3-fold log Fano fibrations (X, B) -> Z under mild conditions. We show that if D is a component of B with coefficient >= t > 0 which is contracted to a point on Z, then D is birational to P-1 x C, where C is a smooth projective curve with gonality bounded depending only on t. Moreover, if t > 1/2, then genus of C is bounded depending only on t.

Abstract:Fix natural numbers n⩾1 , t⩾2 and a primitive tth root of unity ω . In previous work with A. Ayyer (J. Alg., 2022), we studied the factorization of specialized irreducible characters of GLtn , SO2tn+1 , Sp2tn and O2tn evaluated at elements to ωjxi for 0⩽j⩽t−1 and 1⩽i⩽n . In this work, we extend the results to the groups GLtn+m (0⩽m⩽t−1) , SO2tn+3 , Sp2tn+2 and O2tn+2 evaluated at similar specializations: (1) for the GLtn+m case, we set the first tn elements to ωjxi for 0⩽j⩽t−1 and 1⩽i⩽n and the remaining m to y,ωy,...,ωm−1y ; (2) for the other three families, the same specializations but with m=1 . The main results of this paper are a characterization of partitions for which these characters vanish and a factorization of nonzero characters into those of smaller classical groups. Our motivation is the conjectures of Wagh and Prasad (Manuscripta Math., 2020) relating the irreducible representations of Spin2n+1 and SL2n , SL2n+1 and Sp2n as well as Spin2n+2 and Sp2n . Our proofs use the Weyl character formulas and the beta-sets of t -core partitions. Lastly, we give a bijection to prove that there infinitely many t -core partitions for which these characters are nonzero.

Abstract:We prove that any sequence of 4-dimensional log flips that begins with a klt pair (X,D) such that -(K+D) is numerically equivalent to an effective divisor, terminates. This implies termination of flips that begin with a log Fano pair and termination of flips in a relative birational setting. We also prove termination of directed flips with big K+D. As a consequence, we prove existence of minimal models of 4-dimensional dlt pairs of general type, existence of 5-dimensional log flips, and rationality of Kodaira energy in dimension 4.
